Expand desktop to a Macbook Pro

Hello
I have a Mac pro and a Macbook Pro and I want to expand my MacPro display to the Macbook Pro. I have seen in the internet that there is an option in system prefferences in the Display Pane to rearrange that, but in the preferences of my Mac doesn´t have those options. Is it because it is a MacPro from early 2008 ?
I can only duplicate in the Macbook what I´m doing in the MacPro, not expanding...
Is there any other way to do that?
Thanks for your time.

If you add an additional external stand-alone display, it is combined with the built-in along an edge of your choosing. You can do this with any Mac that can support an external display.
You may be able to do screen sharing onto your MacBook, but that will not expand the size of the Mac Pro desktop, only replicate it on the MacBook display.

You might look for third-party software for that, but there is no such option in OS X itself unless you drag the icon into the Dock.

On my old computer I had two movies: Fight Club and Garden State and I'd really like to watch them on my new MacBook Pro! But I dont know how to transfer them onto my new laptop help?!

Right-click them in iTunes, locate the files, move them as you would any other, and drag them into the open iTunes window on the MacBook Pro. iTunes Store rentals can only be moved through an iPod or similar device.

About 5 minutes and that's actually pretty slow for such a minor tool. if you have issues, just explain them and provide the necessary technical info.

Like when I update a file it updates on there too, if I install software it installs on there too etc?
When I first got the laptop I syned it to load with all the same software etc but it hasn't continued to sync
    Thanks

    I use
    Chronosync (http://www.econtechnologies.com/pages/cs/chrono_overview.html)
    and
    Dropbox (https://www.dropbox.com/)
Both work very well. The former I use for manual, one-way synchroniziation of (nearly) entire systems. The latter for automatic syncing of very active directories through local and shared online storage.

Hi, i was wondering how to share movies for example, to the mac desktop from the macbook pro?

Share them how?  View them?  Copy them?
What kind of movies?  DVDs?  iTunes? Other MPEG, AVI files, etc...

when I create a new folder on the desktop of my macbook pro, it is automatically populated with all of the files on the desktop, which I don't want.

I got the problem solved. It was pretty simple but new to me. I had evidently inadvertently switched the setting in the "View" tab on the dropdown menu so that all of my desktop folders were populated by all folders/documents residing on the desktop.
The solution was to open one of the folders, then go to the "View" tab and change the setting to "List." Presto, now all the folders include only the contents I had intentionally loaded into them.

  • Alternatives to expanding Storage on my Macbook Pro w/ Retina Display?

I am new to the Macintosh community, for I have owned a PC most of my life. That being said, I am really accustomed to having the option of upgrading the storage drives, beit a laptop or a desktop. When I purchased my Macbook Pro w/ Retina Display, I was fully aware that upgrades were very limited, but I had no idea that it was not compatable with traditional SSDs.
After some googling, I found OCW selling SSD chips made specifically for the MBPr, but they were not cheap by any means. I wanted to ask the Apple community and see if there are any good alternative options for expanding storage on a MBPr. Are there any external hardrives/SSDs that anyone can personally recommend? I have never used any external drives before, and I do not want to purchase a "bad" drive persay.
    Thanks!

You can sometimes find larger capacity Retina 'daughter card' flash storage devices on eBay - but, like the OWC solution, they don't come cheap. So, as you've deduced, your best (yet not overly inexpensive, either) bet is a fast external drive. The fastest external drives would have Thunderbolt connections - I've two of LaCie's 2big Thunderbolt drives (one 4TB and one 8TB) and they're nice and fast, but not cheap.
If I were you, I would head over to MacMall and search for Thunderbolt drives: they come with a variety of option in a variety of storage space.
That's going to be your fastest solution, even if not highly portable.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Multiple desktops open on Macbook Pro

This issue is more of a nuisance, but over the last couple of weeks when I login to my Macbook Pro I get 7 desktop windows that I can scroll or page between (control + right arrow).  All of my programs open up in the first window - the other 6 are just a blank desktop with my desktop icons.
I can live with this, but what I don't know is whether or not all of these blank desktops are impacting performance or battery life on my Macbook.  Has anyone else run into this and is there a way to get rid of the extra desktops?  Or is this just normal behavior that previously I hadn't noticed?

  • Have HP 4580 all in one and it worked excellent before Lion.  Could print using Windows on desktop and using Macbook Pro.

Before upgrading to Lion on my MacBook Pro I could print on the HP C4580 All in One using HP Desktop with Windows 7 and using MacBook Pro with no problems.  I upgraded to Lion now can only print when I shut down and restart my MacBook.  If using the desktop or the Microsoft Office on my MacBook it kicks the printer offline and I have to restart my laptop.  I called Apple and they said they did not support 3rd party software.  I had previously purchased the printer through Apple with a desktop.  I installed the new driver from HP and removed it, reinstalled.  Guess what, same problem.  Can anyone tell me how to make lion work.  Apple will not provide help.  Have a iPad and with a small app for $7.00 it prints great.  HELP

You must work for Apple.  Contacted the vendor downloaded their app.  Everytime I open Microsoft Office for Mac it kicks printer off line and if I print from a Windows computer (which printer works perfect) it kicks printer off line.  If I restart Mac it will print the item in the printer.  Don't care what Apple says, prior to loading Lion never had any problems.  Sounds as if Apple programers goofed up and just don't want to admit it and correct their problem. Your comments did not solve any problems, asking for help not Apple support.

  • Problem with Digital Cinema Desktop Preview on Macbook Pro

I hava a Macbook Pro 2.2 GHz with 2 GB RAM. I would like to use a connected 24"-Display for preview of my HD-Material (ProRes and HDV). Unfortunately I am not getting my Macbook Pro to playback all frames. Whend Digital Cinema Desktop Preview is activated, there are only still frames displayed. No smooth playing back neither in the canvas window nor the 24" display. I have External Video -> All Frames checked.
Does the Macbook Pro 2.2 not meet the specs for this feature?
Or is it a problem with Leopard? Is anyone with Tiger able using Digital Cinema Desktop Preview with succes?
    Regards,
    Joerg

So are you saying that the DVI output on my MacBook Pro IS true HD resolution and not a proxy like the canvas?
What I am saying is that the video feed coming out of the DVI port is YUV. Computer monitors take that YUV information and convert it to RGB for displaying purposes. So if you connect an Apple monitor to the DVI port, and then use that for Digital Cinema Preview, you are seeing a converted proxie image. The MXO takes the actual YUV footage and outputs that to the Apple display as YUV, and therefore presents full quality broadcast colors. And it does it pixel for pixel...the 23" display is 1920x1200, so there are thin black lines on the top and bottom.
AND the MXO software has a proc amp for adjusting color bars, and a BLUE ONLY option for proper monitor calibration. THis really is an amazing little box.
I'm using a Dell ultrasharp 20" that looks very good that way; I just didn't think it was HD.
It is, but it is a converted RGB image...and since it is 20", it isn't pixel for pixel (well, it would be for 720p, not 1080), and if it isn't pixel for pixel, then it is a converted image. Not suitable for color correction.
then using a DVI to HDMI cable I should be seeing HD from my Sony bravia also?
Yup...sure can. It will look pretty good too. But it being a consumer set, and again having a YUV>RGB converted image, it won't look as good as it could. The MXO would feed it a proper YUV signal, as would an Decklink HDP (but you need a decklink card with SDI out for that).
