Expand iPad 4 storage with either flash drive or hard drive

I have a 16GB iPad 4 that is running out of space, so that I can't even upgrade the iOS.  The non-iOS space is utilized as much by multiple applications as by data content (i.e. no music, few pictures stored on device).
What I'd like is a way to expand the storage capability such that I can move applications (games) to an external device and run from there.  Could you tell me the possible solutions (specific products) and the limitations of each.
An example of a key limitation would be that applications cannot be transferred to and run from the external device.
It doesn't matter whether it's a wireless or tethered solution, since I primarily use it at home (although wireless would be nicer).

And that would be the exact reason why this will not work. You cannot transfer the apps and run them from an external drive. The apps will only work on an iOS device. You can tranfer media and documents to iTunes on your computer amd them remove the, from the device. You would need to back up the iPad before you do this so that you couls recover your data, but deleting apps that you are going to want to use over an over again is not a practical solution.
There are WiFi external drives that will allow you to store content on them, but they are primarily for storing movies and photos that you can stream onto the iPad without having to use the device's built in storage. But you are looking for a way to store and run apps from an external drive, and that isn't going to work.

can the usb camera converter be used with a flash drive or scaning device?

    No.
iOS does not have scanner drivers nor does the connector supply enough power.
Flash drive would kind of work, would need to have a DCIM folder-probably wouldn't see whole drive(?)
Then again this exists, uses wifi:

If it originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, click here, phone Apple, and order a replacement.
If it originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.7 or newer, restart it with the Option, Command, and R keys held down.

Trying to copy photos in folder on desktop to a flash drive but keep getting error that there is not enough free space when there is.  I read to delete trash with the flash drive in but that still doesn't work.  Help!!

How is the flash drive formatted? Open Disk Utility (Applications>Utilities) and see how it's formatted - that might be the problem.

  • Disk Utility won't let me do anything with broken flash drive?

    Hi there,
I own an 8GB SanDisk flashdrive that recently, and out of nowhere, changed permissions to write only. I feel like this may have something to do with the fact that when it was in my old Macbook I would close the screen with it still inserted and it would eject itself and the drive has possibly become corrupt because of this happening one too many times? Anyhow, when moving files around and to my new Macbook and what not, I tried to move some from this USB and it wouldn't let me. I eventually worked out that it would let me copy the files and paste them elsewhere, but now I have this flash drive with a bunch of files that can still be read and I don't know what to do with it because it won't let me delete them either. When I try it comes up with "The item can't be moved to the trash because it can't be deleted." I've tried Disk Utility and this is what happens under the First Aid, Erase and Partition options
I've also tried the appropriate commands in terminal to try to get the disk utility to respond and I kept recieving error messages there too. Also, when I click on the volume underneath the disk it shows all the space that all the files that are very much there are taking up but then also says there's zero files.
Anyone know what on earth is going on?! I mean I know the USB has probably just had it but I'm wondering if there's any possible way I can repair or erase it at this point?

I suspect that the USB is dead.  This is the result I get when I insert my USB drive formatted the same as yours:
Note that the options are not grayed out.
You might connect it to a PC, if available, and see if there is any difference.
    Ciao.

  • IPhoto problem with external flash drive

I'm trying to transfer some pictures from IPhoto to my external flash drive but it won't allow me to.

    Hi jschmidt33,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
Try following along with the article below, if you follow those steps you should be able to save photos to your external drive or any other folder on your computer's internal drive.
    iPhoto '11: Export a photo
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph2438
When you email, print, publish, or export a photo from your iPhoto library, iPhoto asks you to choose the size, also known as resolution. The settings you choose depend on what you want to do with the photo.
To change a photo’s size or file format, you export the photo. You might want to export photos so that you can import them into another application.
    To export photos:
Select the photo or photos you want to export.
    Choose File > Export.
At the top of the Export Photos window, click the File Export button.
To specify the file type for the exported photo, choose an option from the Kind pop-up menu:Original: Exports the photo as it was originally imported into iPhoto, before editing.Current: Exports the photo in its current format. If you imported a RAW-format photo and then edited it in iPhoto, the photo is exported as a JPEG file.JPEG: If you choose this format, choose an option from the JPEG Quality pop-up menu. The higher the quality, the bigger the photo. For example, if the photo will be used on a website where optimal quality for printing isn’t required, you could choose Low to save storage space on the website.TIFF: A lossless file format that works well for transferring photos between computers and applications.PNG: Another lossless file format popular for web images.
To change the size (resolution), choose an option from the Size pop-up menu:
For photos to be emailed or mainly viewed onscreen, these settings compress the photos (making them smaller):
Small: Use for photos you email or publish to websites where you don’t expect anyone to download and print your photos.
Medium: Use when you or your recipients have a reasonably fast Internet connection, such as DSL. This setting is not suitable for making prints.
Large: Use this setting when you and your recipients have a very fast connection. This size can be used to print small to standard-size photos (2 by 3, 3 by 5, and 4 by 6 inches).
For photos to be printed or published for download, these settings provide maximum detail for final prints:
Optimized: Use for larger prints and for publishing photos to websites for others to download and print. With this setting, photos are slightly compressed to a smaller file size so that they download faster without compromising quality.
Actual Size/Full Size: Use to make high-quality prints in small to large sizes, or to upload photos to websites so that others can download and print them. This setting matches the actual size of your photo, so it may take longer to upload or download.
Specify your other options:Include checkboxes: If you choose JPEG or TIFF from the Kind pop-up menu, you can include titles, keywords, and location information with the exported photos by selecting the checkboxes.File Name: Choose whether to export photos in sequence, or by their filenames, iPhoto titles, or album name.Prefix for sequential: If you choose Sequential from the File Name pop-up menu, you can specify text to appear before each number (for example, Birthday01, Birthday02, and so on). This step is optional.
    Click Export.
Choose where to save the exported photo files, and then click OK.
iPhoto works best with JPEG files, the standard format for data compression of still pictures. If you experience problems working with a non-JPEG file in iPhoto, use a different image-editing application to convert the image to JPEG.
    Good luck!
    -Jason

  • How to back up an iPad file onto a USB flash Drive?

  • Issue with usb flash and removable hard drives in Lion. (also an install tip)

Having an issue with my usb flash and removable hard drives.  I plug them in and Lion does not display all my files/folders, I take it out and plug it into my snow leopard machine and all the files/folders are there, does anyone have this issue?
It does it on my macbook pro which was a snow leopard upgrade to Lion and it does it on my macbook which was a clean install of Lion via a bootable flash drive.
The computers both work great in all other aspects, so there were no errors on installation. It's plain and simple, some files/folders are not showing up that are present on the drives and viewable on all other non-lion OS's mac and PC.
Also a word on installs, I highly suggest doing a clean install (delete and reformat drive them install Lion vs a snow leopard ugrade) my machine that was a clean install (macbook) runs 50% faster and smoother than the upgraded one (macbook pro).

Yes, you can use your backup disk drives in the manner you describe, but Apple provides conflicting information on the subject.
    From Mac Basics: Time Machine
Time Machine can’t backup to an external drive that's connected to an AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule, or a drive formatted for Microsoft Windows ...
From Time Machine doesn't back up to AirPort Extreme AirPort Disks
Time Machine in Mac OS X v10.5 or later can be used to back up to many kinds of Mac OS Extended-formatted drives, but you cannot choose an AirPort Extreme 802.11n's AirPort Disk as a Time Machine backup volume.
However, you can choose Time Capsule AirPort Disks or internal disks as a Time Machine backup volume.
They have yet to resolve this discrepancy.
All other available technical details regarding Time Machine's use seem to indicate that a USB HD connected to Time Capsule should meet Time Machine's requirements. For what it's worth I have been using an external HDD connected to the Time Capsule's USB port and it seems to function just fine.

  • Can i install snow leopard with a flash drive?

i purchased the snow leopard family pack to upgrade 3 computers. I have installed it on one macbook pro, and finally got it to go on a mac mini. i am having an issue with my macbook pro, as it wont read the disc. Can i use a flash drive to install it? and how big should it be?

It's probably easier to install it more directly; to use a (working) DVD drive, rather than building yourself a USB keydisk.  Get yourself an appropriate cable (probably FireWire) and Google or Bing search around for details of installing using what is known as Target Disk Mode, or alternatively scounge up an external USB DVD drive and use that directly on the OS X box with the failed DVD drive.

  • Unacceptable performance with USB3 flash drive on USB2 interface

Just purchased a 64G USB3 flash drive to be used with my old nc8230 with XP Pro. The notebook's USB2 interface works perfectly with all types of USB2 devices. However, writing and reading data on the USB 3 thumb drive is extremely slow. Loading it with 42GB of data (10000 files) took me 5.5 hours!!! Tests showed, that when reading or writing a file I see an initial delay of about 2 minutes until the transfer of data starts and seems to work perfectly.
I just updated the USB driver to the latest version available - no improvement.
Needless to say that the problem does not show up on other PCs - showing that the thumb drive is OK.
Handling the above mentioned 42GB data on my external 2.5" drive via the same USB port works perfectly as well (no delays).
    Any idea? Thanks

    Please cancel this question.
In case someone were interested here some more details:
In the meantime I made more tests and found out that the problem is caused by the new USB3 thumb drive and not the notebook. The initial good results on other PCs were caused by the point that I did not fully understand how to reproduce the failure. After this is now clear (primarily high latency times especially when generating directory entries but also when reading the directory structure), the problem showed up equally on another notebook with XP and a desktop with Win7.
I'm now trying to get a replacement.
    Thanks, Dieter

  • Help with USB Flash Drive

I am new to Arch and need some help with a usb flash drive. I have program the base system setup three times and I have got the same error message each time. Everything boots ok until it gets to mount the root device and that is when the error comes up. And yes I have done my homework and found that I need to change a file but I do not know which one and not sure how to.
I have learn more about Linux today than using it at work for over 5 years. Arch users have my highest respect for now I know why they love it so much. The reason I am working with the usb flash drive is I can not setup a hard drive right now for a couple of weeks and want to learn as much as possible before then.

Also, what homework led you to the conclusion that you needed to change a file.  If you tell us where you learned this, we may be able to help with the process.  If you want us to guess .... My guess would be that you should open /boot/vmlinuz-linux in a text editor and delete all the "7"'s.
(Kidding, hopefully obviously, don't do that).
