Expanding BT HomeHub (g) with Airport Extreme (n) and Airport Expresses (g)

Hi - I hope someone can help me... My brother has recently moved house and has asked me to set him up a cool wireless network. This is what he has already:
Intel MacBook Laptop (g & n)
PPC G4 Laptop (g)
BT HomeHub (Router (g))
Airport Extreme (n)
Airport Express (g)
iPhone (g)
I have currently setup the BT HomeHub as the main router and that is working fine - yet due to his house been quite sizable the signal is very weak in most rooms. I was hoping to wirelessly connect the Airport Extreme and place that in a seperate room from the router (BT HomeHub) and use WDS to expand the signal, yet I'm really struggling setting this up (Is this even possible?).
FYI, Due to him having a iPhone and a PPC, I need to keep the network on a 802.11G.
On top of this, I then would like to add a number of airport Expresses to also expand the signal via WDS and others to connect to media players to play music via airtunes.
I was hoping someone could help me with setting this up etc. Do I need to do anything special etc.
Many thanks.
Nick

Hello Mally505. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!

Unfortunately, most likely not as very few non-AirPort routers are WDS-compatible with the AirPort and vice versa. However, you could connect the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) directly to one of your BT HomeHub's LAN ports via an Ethernet cable, and then, create a WDS between the AEBSn and the 802.11g AirPort Express Base Station (AX).

  • Does BT Homehub work with Airport Express

I recently purchased a new Airport Express to allow me stream music wirelessly from my iMac to my existing hi-fi.  I currently have a Huawei Echolife HG532 router from my ISP (TalkTalk).  I have been trying to set up the AE as an extension to my existing wireless network.  I can get it set up initially, but after about 20 to 30 mins of inactivity, the AE appears to drop off the network, even when it is situated just a few feet from the wireless router. I cannot get the AE to reconnect without doing a complete re-set and going through the set-up process again.  I have even tried setting up the AE as a separate network, but I get exactly the same problem.  I have tried changing the channels settings on my router, but this makes things even worse as I cannot connect at all to the AE. I have trawled through various forums and discovered that it may be a problem with my router.  I am currently out of contract with TalkTalk, so am considering switching to BT.  However, I have read on some forums that the BT Homehub router has similar problems.  Can anyone out there confirm if their BT Homehub works with the new AE please?  If not, can anyone confirm which wireless router will work.
I am also having similar drop off problems with a new Airplay Speaker, the Philips Fidelio AD7000W.  I keep having to power down and re-start it for it to be "found" by i-tunes.  I have read the instruction manual for the Fidelio and it makes reference to ensuring the Bonjour service is switched on in Safari.  However, I cannot seem to find the Bonjour service anywhere on my iMac.  How do I find this?
Also, when I try to stream music from my iphone 4 to either the Fidelio or the AE, the Airplay icon in the Music app does not always appear.  I was really looking forward to streaming music from my i-tunes library to my hi-fi via AE and also to my new Fidelio speaker.  However, all I have done is spend hours on the internet trying to fix these problems.  Can anyone hel please!

The AirPort Express will work with the Homehub if you establish a permanent Ethernet connection from one of the LAN <-> ports on the Homehub to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express.
The AirPort Express will not work if you are planning to connect the Express to the Homehub wirelessly to extend the network.

  • Is it possible to expand networking capability with Airport Express?

I have 754S Sierra Mobile Hotspot, is it possible to expand networking capability with Airport Express?

No.  The iPad can connect to only one WiFi system at a time.

  • Does airport extreme 802.11a/c work with airport express 802.11n

does airport extreme 802.11a/c work with airport express 802.11n

"You can use the AirPort Express to extend the signal provided by the new AirPort, but the Express will not extend "ac" wireless since it does not have that capability. The Express will extend an "n" wireless signal if that helps."
This is what I am trying to understand.
So AXTRM w/ sep SSID for 2.4 (b/g/n) - call it SSID1 - and 5GHz (ac) call it SSID2 - WiFi Explorer confirms AC mode on 5G.
Using an AXPRESS to extend - I have the option of SSID1 b/g/n *and* the 5GHz ac SSID2 in the pulldown (it sees both?) --> if I select SSID1, it also extends this same SSID in 5GHz (both showing b/g/n) >> so I now have 3 signals on SSID1 (XTRM 2.4G, XPRS 2.4G and XPRS 5G) b/g/n and one signal on SSID2 (XTRM 5G AC) ac
    If I select the 5Ghz ac SSID2 to extend - it prompts me "do you also want to extend (the 2.4GHz SSID1)?" --> select yes and I now have 2 signals for SSID (XTRM 2.4G & XPRS 2.4G) b/g/n and 2 signals on SSID2 (XTRM 5G 802.11ac & XPRS 5G 802.11 a//n)
Is the 5G SSID2 actually being extended from the Airport Extreme to the Express?
The reason I bring this up is I am having a lot of issues since iOS8 came out (especially on iPhone 6). Everything I am reading is pointing to when people have 2 AP's set to use the same SSID. When you walk to a part of the house where 5G 802.11 ac signal marginalizes, the phone does not immediately hand over to the 5G 802.11 a/n Airport Express.
My thought was separate the SSID's but to me, if the Express can't extend 5Ghz from the Extreme, it's taking a step backwards. I am better off getting a more powerful router like an ASUS and going with one AP, drop the WiFi roaming altogether
    Any thoughts?

  • How do i use my time capsule and extend the network with airport express

I have a new iMac and Time Capsule, how do i extend the network with airport express. My time capsule does have a guest net work, and logins and passwords? I am no computer person. So for me it would have to be spelled out.

Use the search as this has been done to death ..
Bob Timmons is the expert on this.. look at his answers here.

This has been automated in the v6 utility. I am used to doing it manually in v5 utility which is also fairly easy.
Apple doco is also good to read.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259
    Note.
You cannot extend the guest network unless everything is up to date 7.6.3 firmware. And that is only with the TC as the main router in the network.
All apple routers can be configured as the main wireless or as the extend wireless.. so don't worry if a post uses express or extreme or TC.. they are for wireless, the same thing.

  • Setting up a multi-zone stereo system in my home with Airport Express

I'm trying to set up an in-home stereo system using iTunes as my main hub.  I want to play iTunes as well as Pandora and possibly Sirius.  Can I set this up with Airport Express?  Would I control everything through iTunes on my MacBook or an iPad?  How is this all wired if I have some existing external speakers with a receiver in my family room, built-in ceiling speakers in the kitchen, and outdoor external speakers?  I am comparing this to a Sonos system, but the Sonos is not really in my budget.
Also, what is the difference between Airport Express and Airport Extreme?  What would I need for this situation?  Thanks in advance for your help.

    >I want to play iTunes as well as Pandora and possibly Sirius. Can I set this up with AirPort Express?
From iTunes you can stream a single audio source to one or multiple 802.11n AirPort Express Base Stations (AXn), but you cannot stream multiple audio sources to separate AXns. You would need a third-party product, like Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil to stream audio sources other than from iTunes.
    >Would I control everything through iTunes on my MacBook or an iPad?
    You could do either.
    >How is this all wired if I have some existing external speakers with a receiver in my family room, built-in ceiling speakers in the kitchen, and outdoor external speakers?
Of the speakers you mentioned, only the ones connected to the receiver would work directly connected to an AXn. The audio output port on the AXn is a combo 3.5 mm stereo analog/optical digital port. Assuming your receiver accepts either analog or digital audio input, you can feed the output of iTunes or Airfoil from the AXn to the receiver. In turn, the receiver (if configured for whole home stereo) can feed the kitchen and outdoor speakers.
    >Also, what is the difference between AirPort Express and AirPort Extreme?
What's similar: Both are Internet routers that provide wireless. Both provide the ability to share an attached USB printer. What's different: The Extreme has a built-in Ethernet switch. The Extreme supports sharing HDDs and printers together or separately via a USB hub. The Express has a built-in audio circuitry, the Extreme does not.
    >What would I need for this situation?
Only the Express can accomplish providing an audio stream.

  • When adding WRE54G to wireless network incompatible with Airport Express

I added a Linksys WRE54G to expand my network to a Powerbook G4 laptop with a weak signal. When I connect the wireless expander, I no longer see the Airport express in the airport utility. I cannot access the printer or itunes speakers attached to the airport express. When I power off the expander and have a weaker signal, the airport express is available again. I don't know how to configure the wireless expander to work with airport express, and if I try to create a WDS network with the airport express (currently unsuccessful), then I believe I will lose itunes support (and maybe the printer?).
Does anyone know how to configure the WRE54G so that I can still see the airport express on my network?
    Thanks,
    Brigitte

  • Printers that work with Airport Express

I am experiencing problems getting my lexmark p4350 printer to work wirelessly with Airport Express.
Can anybody tell me of any printer, multifunction device, laser printer that will work with AEX?

MACMV, Welcome to the discussion area!
Be aware that ONLY the printing feature of a multifunction device will be usable when connected to the USB port on the AirPort Express (AX).

  • Very Slow 12" Powerbook with Airport Express - 15" PB OK

    Here's my problem; Our 12" 1.5 PB is very slow with Airport Express but It is OK when directly connected to the cable Modem via Ethernet. We also have a 15" PB 1.67 that works great with Airport Express & Ethernet. The 12" PB takes approximately 4-10 times longer to load Internet pages than the 15" PB. Here's what I've tried so far without success;
    - made sure software was up to date (10.4.8)
    - turned off the A/E security
    - different A/E channels
    - moved the A/E base station to another location
    - a differrent A/E base station
    - a Linksys WRTG54 base
    - new Airport Extreme Card in 12" PB
    - ran Apple hardware test on 12" PB - checks OK
    - re-installed fresh OS and Apps from original install disks
    - Firefox instead of Safari
    - new user account on 12" PB
    - re-installed original 512 RAM
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Jerry,
You're not going crazy, by the way. I have the exact same problem with my 12' Powerbook. I even tried swapping airport cards with another Powerbook. No luck. Ethernet is ok.
    Any help is appreciated.

  • Configuring the time capsule airport wlan function as "connect to wlan", the time caspule gets a correct IP adress from the other wlans IP range, but does not assign this to the ethernet ports. With Airport Express it worked!

Configuring the time capsule airport wlan function as "connect to wlan", the time capsule gets a correct IP adress from the other wlans IP range, but does not assign this to the ethernet ports. With Airport express it worked, the single Ethernet port got the IP Parameters passed through!
My setup is a Vodafon Esaybox connected to ISP. Time Capsule is not able to extend the wlan of the easybox, neither airport express can do.
Only the option "connect to wlan" is succesful.
With airport express I was able to connect my Sony Bravia TV to the lan via ethernet to stream pictures, the TV set got an IP adress from the easybox.
With the time capsule the easybox dosn't find devices connected to the ethernet ports to submit IP adresses. The TV set get another IP adress (169.xxx.x.x.) in subnet mask 255.255.0.0 and I don not now where from.
My notebook is a MacBook pro.
    Any idea????
    Thank a lot in advance!
    Kind regards
    Ingo

Neverthe less, could there be the chance, that this feature could be implemnented with an firmware update?
That would appear to be a question for Apple to answer. You can make suggestions to Apple here:
Apple - AirPort Extreme - Feedback
If the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule are configured to "extend a wireless network" they will provide additional wireless coverage....and...the Ethernet ports are enabled in this type of setup.
The "catch" here is that you must have an Apple router providing the network to be extended.

  • How make wireless connection with airport express to  Yamaha Clavinova CVP-403 ?

I would like to wirelessly connect my Yamaha Clavinova CVP-403. I would like to use a D-link DWA 125 and my airport express. Does anyone has any experience on how to do that?

Hi Henry - you seem to be a very helpful and knowledgeable person and I am wanting to dive in to the depths of wireless working at home and could probably do with your advice. I certainly don’t have as much knowledge as Jaybee and if he’s had problems I am feeling a little apprehensive.
I know that the first thing I need to do is get an ethernet modem to use with Airport Express as I currently only have a USB modem. I was wondering if you have any recommendations or if I should go straight for the Netgear DSL modem/router (DG834B) that Jaybee ended up with. Although the bit about ‘disabling the Airport Express resp. Extreme routers’ scares me rigid
I have looked at ‘About this Mac’ and got the following for you – hope it’s helpful.
    OSX 10.3.9
    1.33 HGz PowerPC G4 processor
    Airport Extreme: Worldwide
    Firmware: 400.17(3.90.34.0.p11)
    Airport admin utility: 4.2 (v420.31)
My ISP is also Tiscali (UK) - they have said they can only provide modem support on the USB modem they provide so once I switch to an ethernet modem I’ll be on my own. I have checked the Tiscali website and found the following modems, so I would assume (probably unwisely) that they would be compatible with my account...
    Zoom X6 5590 DSL Modem (55907200)
    D-Link DSL-300T
Zoom Hayes ADSL Ethernet (H0-15805) (081580572)
Any help is very gratefully received.

  • What Vonage router to get with Airport Express?

After a recent lightning strike , I'm in the market for a new Vonage-compatible router that I could use along with Airport Express. I used to have a Linksys RT31P2 for Vonage and I plugged an Airport Extreme base station into it for wireless, but both boxes got fried. Given that I want to use an Airport Express box which will provide wireless, I figured I could get a Vonage-compatible router that isn't wireless (like the RT31P2) and save some money, but I'm having a hard time finding one (it seems the RT31P2 is now obsolete). Best Buy and Comp USA carry two Vonage devices, the Linksys PAP2 and the Linksys WRTP54G. The PAP2 doesn't have an ethernet port in which I could plug the Airport Express so that's no good. And the WRTP54G is a wireless device (which I don't need) that costs $110 (I thought I'd be able to find something around $50).
Any suggestions? Should I just buy the old RT31P2 on amazon or Ebay?
If it matters I have a Scientific-Atlanta PSC2100 series cable modem, and my computers are Mac laptops (Powerbook G4 and iBook G4) with Airport Extreme cards.

Since the AirPort Express has a single Ethernet port, your options are limited.

  • Does Apple list available printers that work with AirPort Express?

Just bought an AirPort Express hoping that I could print wirelessly with my HP 1350 All-in-One, and it won't work. Found out after the fact that my printer doesn't support USB wireless printing.
I'm looking for a basic color printer to work with AirPort Express for wireless printing by other family members, and I'll continue to use my HP 1350 with USB for scanning and OCR functions.
Does Apple provide a list of recommended printers that will work with AirPort Express?

    No Apple doesn't any more.
I have been maintaining a community created list.

This is an unofficial list of USB printers which are are compatible with the AirPort Extreme Base Station and Airport Express. Printers in bold have been added to the original list that Apple provided.
Printers in dark red are in fact the only printers I have personally tested.
Please also note that due to changes in the firmware of both the Airport Extreme base station and the introduction of the Airport Express some printers which are in this list may no longer in fact be compatible.

  • Trekstor pocketair wifi storage connecting with airport express

    Hey there!
Is is possible connecting a Trekstor wifi Storage with airport express? I wanna use Itunes and this storage for streaming music with mit mac pro book (OS X 10.9.3)
Or is it nessaray to use a apple wifi storage like airport extreme?
    Thanks!
    Best regards
    Michael

Is is possible connecting a Trekstor wifi Storage with airport express?
In theory, the Trekstor should be able to connect to an existing network either via a wired (Ethernet) or wireless (Wi-Fi) connection. The AirPort Express, depending on the model, can supply both.
On the other hand, the Express DOES NOT support hard drives connected to its USB port; whereas, the Extreme and Time Capsule base stations do.

  • HP DeskJet F380 won't work with Airport Express

    Hello,
I just purchased a HP DeskJet F380 AIO printer to use with my PBook G4 12". It works fine when connected directly to the PBook through USB, but when I try to use it with Airport Express it won't work. The printer setup utility recognizes the printer as a Bonjour printer but then the specific model won't show up in the pull-down menu. I've tried picking other HP printer models, but when I try to print the printer won't do anything at all. I asked HP support and they basically threw up their hands and gave no assistance.
How can I make this printer work with Airport?
    Thanks!

    Try the process outlined here:

If the supplied HP driver won't work (and as there are no third party alternatives available) then no it won't work with Airport.
