Expanding Quicksilver used for internet - is it worth it?

I still have my trusty old G4 Quicksilver. It's now used by my 6 year old for the internet.
The only thing I've done to it over the yeas is give it extra memory - it currently has 1.12GB. Also replaced the CD drive for a DVD drive.
It has a tiny internal drive - 38GB.
Is there anything I can do fairly cheaply to make it run better when on the internet? For example, one game he goes to on CBBC site doesn't seem to run smoothy, what will be the best upgrade to help that?
I'm a real novice when it comes to this kind of stuff, although I did manage to put the memory and DVD drive in all by myself so can't be too bad!
Thanks, In advance.

Hi-
Three things-
1- Get a 933mhz QS processor.
-The processor is not only faster, but has an L3 cache that the 733mhz processor doesn't. This will really help with internet video.
-Used processors often appear on eBay. Be careful of the Hong Kong and Singapore 933mhz processors. Sold real cheap, but are simply overclocked 733 processors with no L3 cache.
-If in doubt, ask the seller about the cache.
-A used 933mhz processor will typically go for between $60 and $90.
-If you get a 933mhz processor, you can run Leopard, too!
- Replacement requires removing two heatsink clips, an removing 4 screws. Applying thermal compound is also necessary. Not extremely difficult.
2- Replace the hard drive.
A new hard drive will bring back the snap in the system. More free space will also aid with virtual memory, again, helping system/internet performance.
Hard drives run about $50-$60.
-Replacement requires removing the hard drive carrier (1 screw), installing the drive into the carrier (4 screws), and reinstalling the carrier. Easy.
3- Get a graphics card that supports Core Image.
-Not only will this make Tiger and Leopard prettier, but the cards that have Core Image capability have more powerful graphics processors, and more VRAM than those that don't. This will help total system performance, and help with video.
-eBay is a good source for Mac graphics cards. Flashed PC cards (converted to Mac ROM) are common. These cards will work just as a "real" Mac card- just fine, no problem.
-Core Image 4x AGP supporting cards go for between $70 and $250, with no need to go over $140.
-A Radeon 9800 Pro can be had for around $90. Plenty of power for you, with Core Image support.
-Installation requires removal of 1 screw, replcement of the card, and replacement of the 1 screw. Connection of a power cord may be necessary for certain cards. Moderately easy.
Watch some videos here.
Since you did the optical drive yourself, you should be fine with all 3 proceedures.

  • Can Oracle Express Edition be used for Internet Web Projects?

    Hi,
If we have a simple WWW application accessible from internet via WEB server and Web server uses Oracle Express Edition as a "data storage", can Oracle XE be used without violating license (XE limitations)?
    Thank you!

Don't see why not, although a quote from the Oracle Technology Network Developer License Terms for Oracle Database 11g Express Edition page at the License Rights section, "developing, prototyping and running your applications for your own internal data processing operation..." so that might be leaning into a bit of a grey area. A bit.
But with something available on the web you'll want to be sure to stay up to date with security patches- and unfortunately XE can not be patched. Just because something can be done, and even works for its intended purpose, doesn't necessarily mean that it is a "good thing to do".
Nothing wrong with trying something out for learning and figuring out how things work- apex is a nifty development platform, although I've not kept up with the details of the last couple of versions. Too many other things on the "got to learn this, got to do that" list(s).

  • Wrong name on new server in DMZ to be used for Internet software updating

I unfortunately put the external name as my internal name when installing as a DP, MP, SUP, etc on a new server 2012 r2. Now I'm trying to remove services from SCCM 2012 r2 for the new server but it is hung trying to remove the "Component server"

I will than re-add the server with the correct names. It will not just let me just change the name of course.
    Any suggestions????

The problem below is name should be update-no.master.lsuhsc.edu for the command to work.

  • HT201272 What do I use for flashplayer

What do I use for a flashplayer on my ipas?

No Flash for iPads, iPhones, or iPods
Here's why there's is no Flash available for iDevices or other mobile devices. Adobe was unable to provide a product that was suitable to the needs of battery powered mobile devices used for Internet browsing. Existing Flash technology used too much memory, ate battery life, and was buggy. Simply put Flash did not work well on mobile devices.
Apple's Steve Jobs led the escape from Flash dependency when Apple introduced the iPhone, and later introduced the iPad. There was a hue and cry over the omission. Time proved Jobs was right on target.
So this is why there is no Flash for your iPhone or iPad or iPod nor for most SmartPhones. Flash has been abandoned by many sites in favor of supported technologies such as HTML5 or by providing their own custom app.
Here is Steve Jobs official comment on his momentous decision to omit Flash from iDevices: Steve Jobs on Flash.
Here is Adobe's later announcement to cease development of Flash for mobile devices: Adobe on Mobile Flash. Adobe is not providing Flash for Apple iOS devices, and they no longer provide Flash for any other cellular phones. Flash is officially gone.
Now, you are not necessarily out on a limb. There are some apps that can display some Flash, but don't count on there ability to display anything using Flash.
A sample of Apps that can display some Flash content:
      1. Puffin
      2. SkyFire
      3. Photon Flash
      4. Browse2Go
      5. Swifter
Also, note that many sites that use Flash provide their own app for accessing their material. So check with your favorite sites and find out if "there's an app for that."

  • I don't have a question so much as a comment for APPLE. I am a new iPhone 5s user and it has many things I like but It is too small and I can only talk on the phone and use the internet if i am in a position to use a wifi connection and that is not good

I am a new iPhone 5s user. I like many of the features it offers. I don't like that I cannot talk and use the internet (if I am away from WI-FI) and this phone is too small. I am actually thinking of returning it and going back to an Android. After all the hassle it took to get all my stuff working on this phone , it may be worth the switch. This phone needs to be able to multitask freely in this day and age. Also Safari is not the best search engine but I could work with it if I could talk and use it at the same time. I use my phone for business and this is a feature that is needed in my line of work.

I understand that the OP failed to do research. But then, I wasn't replying to the OP. I was replying to Chris. I have Verizon. I can talk and use data at the same time with my Droid Maxx. Therefore, the problem is not just with the network. It would be technically possible for an iPhone to do that on Verizon/Sprint if Apple had chosen to use a different chip, such as the kind other phone manufacturers have elected to use.
Of course, this is probably all irrelevant to the OP's issue. It was merely a point of clarification, especially for those people who are used to being able to use both voice and data at the same time on Verizon. When they switch to an iPhone, they are often surprized at the limitation.
    Best of luck.

  • Can I use wifi for internet, while ethernet only for local network?

Hello everyone.  We have two internet connections at our office.  One is wifi only -- but fastest uploads.  The other is connected to our ethernet network (and very slow).  Really, it's not much a network -- just iMacs connected to a switcher.  When transferring files between iMacs, obviously we want to remain connected to ethernet.  But when uploading and downloading files, the wifi option is quickest (long story why -- our offices next door, can't run a physical line yet, yadda yadda).
So we find ourselves constantly switching between the two in network preferences.  Not only is this a pain, but it doesn't allow us to upload or download directly to a drive on the network.
Is there a way to tell the preferences to use wifi for internet, and ethernet for the local network (without internet)?
(We have updated mountain lion on i7 imacs, and most recent airport extreme)
    Thanks!

Your downstairs router can be installed anywhere in your home, but telephone companies or ISPs are only obligated to install their equipment just barely inside its service entrance. Usually, that location is the worst possible one for a home network, since it's in a basement or some remote corner, far from all the devices that use it.
Your idea to install an Ethernet cable to extend its reach to a more suitable location is an excellent one and will be worth the effort or expense. If you don't want to do it yourself a qualified electrician can perform the work quickly and elegantly, and you may find the cost surprisingly affordable. Ask your friends and neighbors to recommend a reputable electrician and get a written estimate.

  • Want to use Quicktime for Internet Playback but i cant

    Hi
I want to use Quicktime in Firefox or Camino for Internet Playback of MP3 files but i cant change it!
Dont know whats wrong here. Everytime i want to listen to an MP3 Track RealPlayer comes in and does the job...
All the searching through the net didnt help much. :'(
Maybe someone knows how i can fix this.
    Thanks in advance!
    Zettt
    [EDIT:]
The site which causes the trouble is www.myownmusic.de

That Site has coded the html to call the Real Player plug-in. You could look at the source code, find the .mp3 file (and its complete URL) and open that URL in the QuickTime Player.
May not be worth the effort. I am able to view the entire .mp3 URL in Safari's Activity window and use copy/paste to the QT Player's "Open URL" dialog.

  • Can I use my 3G for internet tethering

I have an iphone 3G with web bolt on. Can I use it for internet tethering as when I go into settings ther seems no way of turning the tethering on?

No, your 3G web bolt on is different to a tethering bolt on. You need to call your network provider and they normally will let you try tethering for a limited period of time before they charge you. I found it quite slow and unreliable, not worth the money. Youre better off getting your network to send you an internet dongle instead.

  • Why yahoo/gmail retrieval and facebook app so so slow when in WIFI. But using the internet to check for emails and facebook is fast using the same WIFI connection??

Why yahoo/gmail retrieval and facebook app so so slow when in WIFI. But using the internet to check for emails and facebook is fast using the same WIFI connection??

    Hi SandyS_VZW,
Yes tried resetting the wifi connection and problem still persist.
Here it is...to make it clear. Connected thru the same wifi at home...
-> emails (yahoo/gmail) and facebook WEBSITES are working fine and fast when using/accessing thru a browser (chrome/samsung browser) - no problem with this.
-> emails (yahoo/gmail) and facebook APP is soooooo sloooww (thru the App). Slow I mean comparing it to using their browser/websites... news feeds/emails refreshing so quickly but not when using the APP installed in Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Slow like - It will take around 5-10minutes just to get your emails and news feed refreshed.
THIS HAPPENS ONLY WHEN CONNECTED THRU A WIFI which has a speed of 10-20mb. It is not happening when connected to the network data/plan.
My wife has the same Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (coming from different provider at&t) - same setup (emails, fb app), same wifi connection, but she's not experiencing anything like it.
Not sure why, I dont want to believe that while connected to a WIFI, Verizon is restricting anything and ******* me off to make me switch to my data plan connection everytime - which is Unfair!
Was there a known issue similar about this case?
    thanks,

  • Use airport for internet and ethernet for local?

Hi. Ive searched around and cant find an answer for this.
I have a 27" imac connected to my router and all works fine for accessing the internet.
I have several other devices close by that I want to connect via ethernet. If i connect the imac to another router via ethernet I can browse my local devices but loose internet connectivity. It is as if the imac will suspend the airport connection while the ethernet cable is connected. I don't want my second router to act as a bridge as it doesn't support N speeds.
Essentially, I want the imac to use airport for internet and the ethernet port for local files.... The only workaround I have is to unplug the ethernet cable from the back of the imac when i want to use the internet. I'm hoping it's just a DNS issue, but cant seem to resolve it.
I do not need internet connectivity for the other devices and don't see how i can do that without enabling the wireless side of my second router and then creating a bridge...
    Any suggestions?

It is as if the imac will suspend the airport connection while the ethernet cable is connected.
The Connection Order on your iMac is set so that if both AirPort and Ethernet are "on", the iMac will give priority to the Ethernet connection.
If you want to configure your iMac so that it gives priority to an AirPort connection if both AirPort and Ethernet are "on", give this a try:
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock) and open Network
Click on the small gear icon at the bottom of the connection list on the left
Click on Set Service Order and drag AirPort to the top of the connection order list
    Click OK, then click Apply
Now, if both AirPort and Ethernet are active, your iMac will give priority to the AirPort connection. If you want to connect using Ethernet, you will have to turn AirPort off by clicking the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of your computer screen.
