Expanding third party Raid on Mac OS X Server 10.4.10

We have an ACNC SCSI Raid connected to a G4 tower via an ATTO UL4S Ultra 320 SCSI card. The G4 is running Mac OS X Server 10.4.10 with the latest ATTO drivers and firmware. The ACNC Raid has four 500GB drives for a 1.5TB volume. We want to expand this with two more 500GB drives. The instructions from ACNC show to first add the two drives to the existing array which migrates the data across all drives. Next we modify the volume set to have the new 2.5TB capacity. Finally they say we must "stretch" the partition on the filesystem. They provide instructions for doing this on Windows and on Linux but on Mac OS X. Will this final step be possible on Mac OS X or have I hit a major problem? If I have, is my only solution to back this data up and rebuild the array and they bring the data back?

There is a product called VolumeWorks that is supposed to do this. I looked at the demo, but I could not get it to see the extra space so I ended up backing it all up and erasing the Raid and doing a block copy with Carbon Copy Cloner.

  • Third party RAID card. . .

Greetings. 3 questions (with by-questions added).
    1. I have "read" that you can't use third-party RAID cards with apple HDD or Apple RAID with third-party HDD because of formatting from Apple. Is this true?
    a) I've also "read" that there aren't any third-party RAID cards available for the "new" 2009> Mac Pros. Is this true
    b) If question 'a' is false and it IS possible to install or "adapt" a third-party RAID card to the Pro, how would one go about it?
    2. If I kept the OS running off of the 640GB HDD from apple, would I have to also add ONLY apple HDD?
    3. Is it true that software RAID can only do RAID0 and 1? I'm planning on adding 2x 500GB drives for my video editing needs, which should be plenty to start out with; the answer to the question will help allow me to plan for when I should start saving for a RAID card.
Of course, I plan on playing and exploring the "RAID world" before actually working with it, but these questions still needed answering.
Thanks. Links are welcome if they help me understand your answers to my questions!

If you only want a Video editing striped RAID pair and a System drive:
    a) You do not need the frighteningly expensive RAID card with its 72-hour backup battery.
    b) Apple software RAID (built into Disk Utility) is perfectly adequate for most uses. There is other software you can buy, and it also works just fine.
    c) You can use whatever SATA drives please you, but "Green" drives are for economy, not performance.
    d) You do not need to keep that 640GB as your System Drive. You can replace it with a smaller drive and use the 640GB as half the RAID, if you wish.

  • How to remove third party application from mAC

how to uninstall or remove custom application from mac yasomite. New to mac   easy and safe way
    thanks in advance

    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper
        2. AppDelete
        3. Automaton
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller
      10. Spring Cleaning

  • Good Tutorial On Installing Third-Party Software For Mac OS X?

    Hey Everyone,
I have a friend who recently switched over from Windows to a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.4.x.
Recently he asked me to explain to him how installing software on Mac OS X works. He was always used to the typical Windows setup.exe installation methods that dropped everything you needed in the Start Menu.
After explaining to him the usage of DMG files, PKG files, Installer.app, and drag-and-drop installs, he felt pretty comfortable with the process.
However, I'm wondering if anyone out there knows a good beginners tutorial for how software installation on Mac OS X works. I checked the Mac 101 site, didn't see much. Searching Apple's knowledge base didn't give me any helpful "general" documents.
If anyone has useful links they can point me to so I can direct my friend (and anyone else that might ask me this type of question) to some reading material, that could prove very helpful.
    Thanks!

I don't think there is such a document because installing software on a Mac is pretty simple and self-explanatory. You've explained as much as there is needed to know.
Your friend could visit The XLab FAQs where he will find numerous FAQs on using and troubleshooting the Mac.
There are plenty of books available that can be ordered through Amazon.com.

  • Preview Pop-Up Menus with third-party Player for mac

    Hi, everyone,
Does anyone have an idea, how i could preview my pop-up menus without burning and waisting a BD every time??
I just downloaded two different free BluRay players for mac, they both dont seem to have the option to open a Pop-up menu. (I really wonder, why that is so, i cannot imagine that this is so hard to develop…)
anyway, how do you guys do that?? is there any software out there that can do this?? I am at a point where i feel i would even pay for a software or get a windows software and run it via crossover, if nessesary...
Please help, i really want to preview my BluRay before i burn it on disc.
    Thank you very much,
    Niki

    Two methods:
I use Total Media Theater (5 or 6). It is not free, and I do not know if it is available for Mac. Popup menus and slideshow operation is the most challenging for emulators (which is what computer DVD/BD players are).
Burn to a DVD+RW. This is essential as a test step to burn to some disk.

  • Third Party Font on Mac Mini

I have a new mac mini with OS X, Version 10.4.5 and I am trying to load ITC Kabel font with font book and can’t. My friend has a G5 with OS X, Version 10.4.6 (with Classic also loaded) and she can load the same font in her OS X font book. When I open up the font on my old G3 (OS 9.2) it shows it as a font file; on the mac mini it shows it as a Unix Executable file). Any help would be appreciated.
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I think I understand what you're doing, but I'm not sure why. I was under the impression that you were having problems adding fonts to Font Book & the default libraries. Since the font is now listed in Font Book, that part is done, it is in the default library, computer or user, that you have set in the Font Book preferences. A new library or new collection will be empty ("no fonts selected") until you add fonts to them. Unless you want to keep a font library on a server for access by several computers or create one to have different collections than in the main computer or user library there is no need to create more libraries. Fonts in the libraries are available to applications. Some applications may not recognize fonts added while the program is running. You will need to quit the program & then restart it. You may even need to restart your Mac.
If you want to organize your fonts by type or use, like I have in this picture (you can see me dragging the font Curlz to the Fun collection), create a new collection, name it & then add fonts to it either by File > Add Fonts > click on the desired font(s) to select/highlight > Open or by dragging & dropping from the all fonts pane.
Please post back if I'm still clear as mud. I'll try some more & see if I can find someone else with ideas.

  • Extending capacity of a third party RAID - OS X not using extra space

I have an infortrend RAID which we have added extra drives to for more capacity, the RAID logical volume size has increased and I can see it has gone up from around 6Tb to 7Tb in Disk utility, but we cannot resize the partition to use this increased capacity.
We could of course reformat and repartition and I should think that would work, but that is a lot of work (backing up everything and re-copying it back on)
You should be able to increase capacity as you need it.
After searching google I did find this page that explains a proceedure that sounds like it would work. but as I am not getting the error message that it is talking about I am a bit wary.. does anyone know if the proceedure outlined below is safe and would give me the result I am looking for?
    http://blog.scottmroberts.com/archives/15

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Widgets.

  • Sharing photos to iPhoto without a third party service

Both my mother and I have iPhoto '08. She wants to be able to get to full-sized copies of my photos. I want to achieve this without using a third-party service (Dot Mac, Flickr, etc.) My Mac is configured as a server.
For awhile, I've tried posting full-sized album pages using iWeb, but the performance is terrible, even when clients don't try to get the full-sized images. iPhoto has some nice sharing features, so I'd like to get one of them to work, and would appreciate some advice from others on how to do so.
First, there's the "Sharing" iPhoto feature. This is limited to a local network, however. Ideally, I ought to be able to create an SSH tunnel and a Bonjour service proxy (using something like Network Beacon). However, when I try this, iPhoto displays but grays out the shared library (under "Shares"). I can't get it to work successfully. (If I do the same thing with my Web server, Safari loads the Bonjour web page without problems. Not sure what's going wrong.)
Second, there's "Subscribe to Photo Feed". This is really optimized for Dot Mac, but the "open" nature of the protocol, using RSS, makes it possible for others to create feeds. There's this post: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060722055330166f discussing CustomHTMLExport combined with a a custom RSS template. But it's all based on iPhoto '06, and I wonder if there's been anything better to come up since. I can't find any discussions about doing something like this that specifically talk about iPhoto '08.
Ideally, I'd like this to be transparent on both ends, just like LAN sharing or photocasting over Dot Mac. But I'm willing to do some work on my end if necessary.

WIPHA seems to work. Webphoto also works (in 10.5, even), though support has been discontinued for some time. Webphoto's problem is that it doesn't display navigation links for photos bigger than 550 (width). The photo displays just fine, but does not include the links necessary to click through to the next or previous photo.
WIPHA's problem is that it ONLY sorts by date. The advantage of Webphoto was that it would display images in the same order as arranged in an iPhoto album.
I'm trying to use iPhoto as the source of slideshows for classes I teach, so that all I have to do for a class is arrange an album, and then fire up the web browser on the computer in my classroom (no exporting, no HTML pages, no duplicate directories...). WIPHA would work, only it won't display in the order I want. Webphoto would work if it would display navigation links with large photos.
Does anyone know of any other option for simply displaying the contents of an iPhoto album on the web without the botheration of separate web pages and exporting and all that crap?
(Or, is there a fix to WebPhoto that will display navigation links for large images?)

  • Burning a Third-Party Boot Disc

    Hi,
I'm trying to create a boot disc on my MacBook Pro for another computer. The OS I am going to be burning on there is a third-party OS, NOT Mac. ( http://centos.org/ ) All I am finding is information on how to backup my Mac OS boot disc. I'm on Leopard 10.5.5. Any help?
    Cheers,
    B

    Hi,
although I am having difficulties understanding what you really want to burn/backup, I try answering:
To backup the OSX volume on your internal harddisk you can use Time Machine which is part of OSX Leopard or SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner and an external harddisk.
    http://www.apple.com/support/leopard/timemachine/
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
For burning CDs/DVDs you can use Disk Utility (see the help files in Disk Utility for how-to) or SimplyBurns which I prefer.
    http://simplyburns.berlios.de/
For making a copy of your OSX Installation DVD you must use a DVD-DL+R since the OSX DVD is larger than the 4.7GB of a standard DVD-R.
Depending on the size of the CentOS you can use a writeable CD/DVD/DVD-DL.
SImplyBurns has an interface with five buttons from which you choose '1:1-Disccopy' to make the copy.
    Hope it helps
    Stefan

  • How can i download third party Softwares from Support tab in Apple site?

    Hi,
Previously i downloaded third party softwares for mac like Browsers, Anti- Virus softwares from Apple site but now i can download only Apple products (softwares) not third party softwares from download links so any one please let me know the status.
    Thanks in advance,
    Suresh Balakrishnan.

Apple no longer hosts a website for 3rd party software.  Instead it runs the Mac App Store, which offers a good range of software.
If you are very keen for the apps and other things that are not in the Mac App Store, a good app to download is "Bodega" - which provides another app store experience.
    Cheers,
    Rodney
