Expanding WIndows 7 x64 partition size?

Hello all
I use Snow Leopard and a Bootcamp partition of Windows 7 ultimate on my Macbook Pro. I need to expand the size of my windows 7 partition WITHOUT erasing the data on the disk.
Is this possible, if so, could someone point me in the right direction?
Alternatively, is there a way of saving a hard disk image of the windows installation that could be painlessly and quickly reinstalled on a larger petition? this is a secondary concern as i would rather expand the partition size.
Thank you

You'll want a backup just in case resizing with CampTune (Paragon) fails, so then Casper 6 (commercial) or WinClone http://www.twocanoes.com to get your image backup. Or, use built in Windows Backup system image.
Windows 7 backup built in is easy to use and quick. I have it set to backup daily 7 AM. There is also Windows Easy Transfer to backup user data.
CampTune can be iffy. but free.

  • Expanding windows 7 partition size ...

    Hello,
I did some searching around and found several opinions / answers to the subject. I'm not sure which direction to take - one option being Paragon's CapTune software, and the other being the Disk Management Utility in Windows 7, which should allow you to expand the disk.
The reason for me posting is two-fold. I attempted the Disk Management option, and found that the 'Extend Volume' option is not available for my Bootcamped drive. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this and why it wouldn't work.
Also, any opinions on CampTune would be great.
What about VMWare Fusion? Could this alone expand a partition size?
I know this is a topic that has been spoken about (probably quite a bit), but I was hoping to get some more personal feedback. What is the best way to do this? If the answer is start over with Bootcamp, that is also acceptable.
    Thank you,

Paragon. I'd buy the full Paragon Hard Disk Manager™ 2011 Suite
That includes cloning Windows to SSD, to another drive, CampTune (resizing) and HFS access. I used it over the weekend to move Windows to an SSD (but that was using dedicated drives, not hybrid Windows on Mac setup. Took all of 20 minutes and able to boot.
So you can always try backup both OS systems, and then restore each.
I'd say post on their forum, but threads and questions seem to go unanswered or very little activity and input, and of course quiet for 2 weeks holidays.
VMs are a totally different animal and nothing to help or do with partitioning.

  • Recovery Partition Size

I have a Toshiba Satellite L755 (about 3 years old).  Today the hard drive crashed and I installed a new 1T toshiba SATA drive. When I used my recovery DVDs, the recovery software asked for the WIndows (C partition size.  I used 500M thinking a D: partition would be created with the remaining drive space - WRONG.  The computer only sees the 500M C: partition.  Is there a way to recover the remaining drive space???

Personally, I would redo the recovery and designate the entire available free space to C:. With new HDDs reliability, and Windows 7+ recovery options available, there is little to no reason to create a separate D - data partition. This can also restrict your software installation and recovery options.
Regardless, if you wish to do so, click 'Start' -> type in:  diskmgmt.msc  --> click on this file. Follow the directions in this article to create a new partition - drive on your HDD.
    Good luck.

  • Max GPT partition size for Windows 2008R2

Is the max partition size 256tb -64K? for 64k stripe size?? What is the max?

    Hi Jared,
From Windows Server 2003 SP1, Windows XP x64 edition, and later versions, the maximum raw partition of
18 exabytes can be supported. (Windows file systems currently are limited to 256 terabytes each.)
GPT disks support partitions of up to 18 exabytes (EBs) in size and up to 128 partitions per disk.

  • HT5639 I am attempting to install windows 7 ultimate on a mid2012 production macbook pro using Bootcamp 5 in Mountain Lion. Whenever I set the partition size and tell it to continue, the program quits unexpectedly. I have done this about 5 times now. Sugg

The lead-in above pretty much states the problem. I am attempting to install Windows 7 from a disk, but that is not the issue. Boot Camp 5 just quits and reopens. I then repeat. Help.

I am about to run specialized GIS software that may or may not need the full machine resources. I am an attorney who uses QuickBooks for my accounting. The Mac version does not do as much as the Windows version. This is from both Apple and Quick Books professionals. I am using Parallels Desktop version 8 at this time. It does not support QuickBooks Windows version per Parallels. Any other questions? I am a highly competent PC user who is new to Macs. I am entitled to my own configuration choices. That said, I know when I need help which is now.
As to the free space issue I have 665.18 GB free space out of 749.3 GB on the drive. I am not trying to run the 32 bit version. I know that it requires the 64 bit version. Besides, it does not get that far in the process. As I said Boot Camp asssitant terminates unexpectedly as soon as you hit the continue button after setting the partition size. Therefore I conclude that it does not have a chance to see which version of Windows that I am using. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit version in the virtual engine (to use Parallels speak), but again Boot Camp would not see that since it is not running. It can't run at the momenet because Apple just installed a new hard drive and I have just restored the data from TIme Machine and Parallels needs reactivated, which I have not done yet deliberatley. With all of this addtiional information do you have any further suggestions? Thanks for your time and interest my issue.

  • Appropriate partition size for windows 7?

i just bought windows 7 and want to install it on my mac pro that i recently bought. i was wondering what's an appropriate partition size for windows 7 and if it matters whether i install the 32 bit or the 64 bit? i'm mainly using it for a game (league of legends) if that makes an difference. thank you for your time.
    -Nikko

If you have more than 4GB of RAM or are planning on some time in the future to install more than 4GB of RAM use the 64 bit version. The 32 bit version can not address more than 4GB. Windows programs are now 64 bit. Your computer is 64 bit. 64 bit Windows runs 32 bit Windows programs. So there is no reason to install 32 bit Windows.
Windows 7 requires a lot of space. Then you need space for any data you create. I think that at a minimum you need 50GB plus data. I would opt for larger rather than smaller so the minimum I would partition is 100GB. If you conserve space now by making a small partition it is likely you will fill up that space quickly. You'll then wish you had made a larger partition initially. Search this forum, there are several questions on how to make a Boot Camp partition larger.

  • Best practice of expanding partition size

    Hi,
I am just wondering what's the best practice of expanding a partition. Currently the server I am working in has the partitions configure as below:
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
    /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-LogVol00
    5046848 4630796 155548 97% /
    /dev/sda1 101086 50293 45574 53% /boot
    tmpfs 4087296 2388360 1698936 59% /dev/shm
    /dev/sda3 5162828 141544 4759024 3% /tmp
    /dev/sdb1 1923068 734956 1090424 41% /fs0
    /dev/sdb2 1923084 70908 1754488 4% /fs1
    /dev/sdc1 89406276 68095788 16768916 81% /fs2
    /dev/sdc2 13804204 7061912 6041056 54% /fs3
    /dev/sdb3 6474880 4509556 1636416 74% /fs4
Let's say I want to increase /fs2 which is /dev/sdc1 by another 15GB. I can go into the VMware and increase the disk size by 20GB but how will I go about increasing the partition size without affecting other partitions?
Most of the instructions I see online basically creates a new partition but I want to avoid creating a new partition. So is it possible to do it?
    Thanks.

You cannot increase a partition on a disk without affecting other partitions on the same disk unless it is the last partition. You will have to completely re-organize your partitions and restore from backup. You can however extend partitions that are under LVM control by adding a free LVM controlled partition or disk and assign it to any existing LVM volume in order to increase it's capacity. There is plenty of documentation and info available on the web. If you plan to increase your LVM root volume you need to boot form external media.
Since you are using VMware there is actually no need to create multiple partitions on any disk. You can simply put each partition on it's own virtual disk. Then after you increase the underlying virtual disk, you can use "lvextend" for devices under LVM, or "gparted" to modify the partition, and use the "resize2fs" command to adjust the file system, even while the mounted volume is online.

In your opinion, How much partition size should I allocate for the Windows 7 Professional installation ?
    Thanks.

    Thanks BobTheFisherman.
Actually. Let's say i use 80gb for windows partition. What am I saving the rest of the 176GB for ? For maverick ? If let's say I only use windows what's stopping me to use the maximum possible (211GB according to the installer) for windows ? Just

You can delete the partition in Boot Camp Assistant or use Camptune to modify it

  • How do I repair a Windows 7 partition when it is after Windows 8 partition in a Dual Boot Setup

I have a laptop that I purchased a year ago and which came pre-installed with Windows 8.
Recently, I successfully added Windows 7 as a dual-boot, and this worked OK. To obtain the space for Windows 7, I shrunk the Windows 8 partition.
In Disk Management, the Windows 8 partition is physically located after OEM and EFI partitions; Windows 7 partition is is adjacent to Windows 8.
All went well until I shrunk the Windows 8 partition further to increase the size of the Windows 7 partition, after which Windows 7 came up with a boot error....Windows 8 still boots OK.
I inserted my Windows 7 disk to perform a Startup/Repair, which failed because the first OS partition it sees is Windows 8 and a message tells me that I need to install the correct media for that system.
I searched for advice and assistance to solve the problem....to no avail - and had to completely re-install Windows 7 and the associated applications.....and I really don't want to have to go through this again.
I actually use Windows 7 more than 8, and if I have to lose one or the other, I would dump Windows 8.
So....is there a manageable way I can keep the two systems recoverable and migrateable to another disk in the future. If not, how do I safely remove  the Windows 8 partition without damaging Windows 7? Ideally, I would just like to swap the partitions
round....but with EFI and BCD partitions, I am reluctant to go into the unknown.
Sorry....bit of a saga....but would appreciate any advice.
    Rob Nick

    Hi Rob,
Above all, as the purpose is to enlarge Windows 7 partition, please understand that shrink Windows 8 partition again cannot help on it. A partition can be expanded only if there is free space "after" it.
So you will still need to delete Windows 7 partition for expanding purpose.
If it is fine to just make Windows 7 back to boot order. Please try following command lines.
Note: Please run CMD in Administrator mode.
    bcdedit /export “c:\boot”
This is a backup. You can delete it if things go successfully.
Then please create a new entry for Windows 7:
    bcdedit /copy {current} /d “Windows 7”
It will provide an entry ID. Copy it and it will be used in following 2 command lines.
    bcdedit /set {identifier} device partition=X
Replace X with the drive letter of Windows 7 system located.
    bcdedit /displayorder {identifier} /addlast

  • Windows 7 Partition not working?

Hello all, I have just received my Macbook Pro 15' i5. I installed Windows 7 64 bit using bootcamp yesterday and everything was working fine. Today while in Windows 7 I had microsoft word open as I was reviewing a text document, while performing a Bitdefender (Antivirus option that comes with the purchase of the Intego Internet Security Dual Protection) scan of virus because it kept prompting me to run a full scan of the computer. I performed a custom scan, only scanning the Windows Partition, then I proceeded to look over my text document, I was studying for an upcoming final. Then I go to the taskbar to check on the progress of the scan and that is where my computer froze up.
Pointer did not respond and the whole deal. I had to hold down the power button until my MBP shut down. I tried to boot again in my windows partition only to give me a black screen and not load at all, forcing me to shut down my MBP again.
Could anyone offer any advise as to what is going on or how to fix this? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank You!

There is no Recovery Mode. There is a Recovery HD if you run Lion or later, and need to boot from it in order to make changes to the startup drive.
    Boot Using Command+R keys:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
"COMMAND" and the "R" keys together.
      3. Release the keys when the Utilities Menu appears.
To open Disk Utility simply select it from the menu of options then click on the Continue button. I think you may need to try doing this:
Click on the Add [+] button. This should create a new partition in the Empty Space. It should be possible, now, to change the sizes of each partition. If so, then select the bottom partition and click on the Delete [-] button. Now see if you cannot expand the upper partition to its full size. If you still cannot do this then the drive is too corrupted to do anything with but re-partition it from scratch.
Does your computer happen to have a Fusion Drive installed?

  • Installation Extremely Slow - Hangs during Expanding Windows Files

I'm trying to get 7 to install and I'm having a bear of a time.  It has taken a tremendously long time to cycle through the steps and after a little more than an hour, it was only at 6% of Expanding Windows Files.
I've taken a stick of RAM out bringing me down to 2gb, have tried three burns (one at the slowest speed and verified), neither has helped.  Please help.
    My system specs:
    5400+ Black Edition (non-OCed)
    Abit AN52 Motherboard (nForce 520)
    OCZ PC-6400 4gb (2gb during install)
    XfX Geforce 8800GT
    Western Digital Raptor x2

i was having the same problem on my system dell inspiron i try all the possible ways but still the same no any achievement after all the process i even give up and install xp but suddenly i try one process which is by using pendrive and it woks perfectly
here are the process of doing so
    get a pendrie 4GB minimum
    Step 1. Preparing USB drive
Open command prompt, from Start > run > cmd. If you are on vista or Windows 7, you might need to run it as elevated administrator. You can do this by creating shortcut to “cmd” on desktop then right click
    > “Run as Administrator”.
    Enter following commands -
    > Diskpart
    DISKPART> LIST DISK
Disk ###  Status         Size     Free     Dyn  Gpt
    Disk 0    Online           93 GB    13 MB
    Disk 1    Online           8 GB    6 MB
Note down the number corresponding Disk number. 1 in my case
    DISKPART> SELECT DISK 1
    >CLEAN
    >CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
    >SELECT PARTITION 1     – This 1 remains same always.
    >ACTIVE
    >FORMAT FS=NTFS
    >ASSIGN
    >EXIT
Step 2. Copy Installed CD/DVD contents to USB drive
    > xcopy e:\*.* /s/e/f f:\
where e:\ is your source DVD drive, f:\ is target USB drive
    Step 3.Changing BIOS Settings
Reboot into BIOS. Change settings to Enable “Boot from USB”, and give it the highest precedence. Save settings and reboot, You would reboot into installation.

  • When installing Windows 7 using Bootcamp, expanding windows files gets stuck at 65%?

I was installing Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit on my Macboom Pro Retina with Bootcamp, and when it reached the "expanding windows files" stage, it got stuck at 0%. I waited a few minutes, and the percentage began to increase until it got to 65%, at which it stopped again. I left it for a while, but after coming back nearly an hour later, it was still stuck at 65%, so I canceled the installation by clicking the close button of the installation window. It froze after that. I could move my cursor, but I couldn't click anything. I got impatient and held down the power button to shut it down manually. When I restarted the Mac, it played the normal startup sound then went to a black screen with a blinking dash symbol in the upper left corner. It's now stuck on this screen. I'm scared I might have really screwed up my computer. What do I do?

Edit: Fixed it by just holding down the option key when it restarted. Don't know why I didn't think of that before. I also removed the partial Windows download and the whole Windows disc partition using Bootcamp.
I think the reason why it didn't work is because I used an OEM version of Windows 7, which is to say I bought the licence key off of some website for $35 and they emailed me with the key and an .iso of Windows 7. I read somewhere that using OEMs with Bootcamp is not recommended. But that leads me to another problem - I really do want Windows on my Mac since I have some programs that would only run on Windows and I bought PhotoShop Elements 12 for the Windows platform and to switch platforms I would need to upgrade to 13, which costs almost as much as buying the original. And I don't want to go buy a proper Windows installation disc, that would mean wasting the $35 I already spent.
So is there any way I can actually install Windows safely with my OEM version of it?

  • Windows 7 Pro 64 bit Expanding Windows FIles, reboots

Trying to do clean install of Windows 7 Pro 64 bit to Lenovo Thinkpad  X140e laptop.  I boot up the DVD, get to windows advanced install, add AMD AHCI driver from CD and start installation. Anywhere from 7% to 70% completion of the "Expanding
Windows Files" the laptop reboots with out displaying an error and because the install is not complete shows at "BOOTMGR is missing" message upon restart.

I received an answer form someone in the Lenovo Support Community Forum.  Because this machine was a Preload Windows 8 with UEFI BIOS, he suggested opening a command prompt in the windows GUI installer (Shift -F10), run DISKPART with the CLEAN ALL option
and wiping the disk.  Even though I had deleted all disk partitions via the Windows GUI installer, apparently there was a hidden partition causing a problem with Windows 7 install.  After wiping the disk, I went back to the Windows installer and
clicked Next. It copied and completely expanded all the windows files!
