Expdp slower than exp utility
Hi
I am doing a simple test with a 6G database using expdp and exp and the timing is as shown below:
expdp: 6 mins
exp: 1 min!!!
Why is it that expdp is slower than exp??
Hi
I am using the following extra parameters for the exp:
direct=Y rows=y statistics=none consistent=y
expdp:
expdp scott/tiger@db10g schemas=SCOTT directory=TEST_DIR dumpfile=SCOTT.dmp
Thanks!

Hi Experts,
how expdp is faster than exp, what oracle internally change to speed up datapump?
how impdp is faster than imp, what oracle internally change to speed up datapump?
Thanks,exp/imp are clients. Communication between the database instance and the exp utility that writes the export dump file (or from the imp utility to the database instance) goes through SQLNet.
expdp/impdp are server processes. These processes attach to the SGA.
(for those who know : we used to do impst and expst a long time ago. Even in 10g it is still possible to create the expst/impst binaries. The "st" stands for SingleTask. Client-Server is not SingleTask).

EXP utillity has higher version than database - export failed !
Hi,
I have a Oracle8 Enterprise Edition Release 8.0.5.0.0 database on our server and I have installed a 9i client on my PC. Now I have to use the export utility to export a specific table from our DB, but as I read from 'Oracle9i Database Utilities' book:
"The version of the Export utility must be equal to the lowest version of the source or target database".
So, I guess I need to install a 8.0.5 client on my PC (I have W2K) but nobody can give me the install CD in the company:(
I've looked on the OTN page if I can find the needed version, but I found only the 8i (8.1.7) install kit. Do you think it shall work the EXP utility if I install that ? Or can I find somewhere else the 8.0.5 install kit ?
Thanks:
Szilard
PS: the error message what I got when I tried to export with 9i client from 8.0.5 DB:
C:\exp user/passw file=myexp.dmp tables=emp;
EXP-00056: ORACLE error 2248 encountered
ORA-02248: invalid option for ALTER SESSION
EXP-00000: Export terminated unsuccessfully
, but the same command line from a 9i DB worked...Since your target server is 8.0.5, you should have the EXP utility from a 8.0.x versions. Anything higher will not work.

Why is Airport Exp. with TimeCapsule slower than with just the TimeCapsule?
I have a 500MB TimeCapsule (with a Comcast modem and 16mbps download). Within the room that the TimeCapsule is in, the signal is great. I decided to extend the signal down the hall with a (slightly older) Airport Express. Now that the signal has been extended, it is much slower than with just the TimeCapsule. I believe I'm getting something close to 65kbps with the Aiport Express extension, whereas I was getting well over a 3 mbps with just the TimeCapsule.
Thanks for your help!
DL+My question/input would be, the TC is 802.11n where the older a1084 AX is 802.11b/g, so wouldn't that also show a decrease in speed?+
Yes, in a way. But, the speed on your local network will be much faster than your internet connection speed.
a "g" network can handle 54Mbps, so worst case with the WDS, your local network speed would be 27Mbps. Your internet connection speed should stay about the same.
If you decide to upgrade to an AirPort Express "n", you can configure your network to use Apple's "extend a wireless network feature". Results will be much faster "n" speeds and much less bandwidth loss.
The faster speeds really only benefit you if you are moving large files or backing up on your local area network. Your Time Capsule backups would be much faster if you are using wireless if you move to the "extend" feature. -

Imp Exp utility in ubuntu 10.4 with oracle instant client 10
Hi,
I have a problem with the imp/exp utility on Ubuntu 10.4.
I have installed the oracle instant client 10, and I have followed this thread
[http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25329_01/doc/admin.102/b25107/impexp.htm#CHDDBGDF]
So, I've set env variable in my .bashrc
ORACLE_HOME=/home/lucia/Programmi/instantclient10_1
export ORACLE_HOME
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/home/lucia/Programmi/instantclient10_1:${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
PATH=/home/lucia/Programmi/instantclient10_1:${PATH}
export PATH
SQLPATH=/home/lucia/Programmi/instantclient10_1:${SQLPATH}
export SQLPATH
Sqlplus works fine, but when I try to use the utility exp/imp
exp DB_USER/DB_PW@DB_SCHEMA owner=DB_USER buffer=300000 LOG=DB_USER.log FILE=DB_USER.dmp compress=n
I have the following error:
No command 'exp' found, did you mean:

Any suggestions?
thanks in advance.

LuciaHello,
I had the same problem. It was related to the shell script interpreter being used: it is really a bash script asking to be interpreted as sh. For the impatient, the solution was to change the first line of the script orarun.sh to read as:
#!/bin/bash
Explanation:
1. The script runfixup.sh calls orarun.sh. The latter is the one that fails starting at line 845.
2. The script is really a bash script as can be seen from the if syntax used. For example at line 191 we see the double equall sign ==:
if [ "`echo $SET_KERNEL_PARAMETERS | tr A-Z a-z`" == "true" ]
3. The bash man page says:
string1 == string2
string1 = string2
True if the strings are equal. = should be used with the test command for POSIX conformance.
string1 != string2
True if the strings are not equal.
(End of man page excerpt)
Notice in particular that for a bash script to be POSIX it should avoid the == and just use =
4. orarun.sh has on its first line #!/bin/sh. On my Ubuntu system, sh is a softlink to dash and the dash man page says:
s1 = s2 True if the strings s1 and s2 are identical.
s1 != s2 True if the strings s1 and s2 are not identical.
5. So this script script uses bash syntax but is interpreted by dash. It is possible that this worked fine for the Oracle developer if on their system sh was softlinked to bash (which is often the case). Apparently, one should then be very careful to not use idioms that are not POSIX compliant.
6. Another solution is to change the /bin/sh softlink from dash to bash. Personally, I was less comfortable doing this (the possible repercussions were wider than the proposed solution above).
After making the change, the script ran perfectly. I think the best solution is for Oracle to update the script to be POSIX compliant or to identify itself as bash.
Hope that helped,
Mark Gaber

My mountain lion OS hangs like windows does and sumtimes have visual glitches like the drop down menu's are half visible. Sometimes it slows down at every point. And its just 2 months old. Please help.
Isolating Issues
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try a restart.
Run Disk Utility/Repair Permissions. Run until it reports no errors. If there is a recurring error, see the article on what permission errors can be ignored.
Disk Utility
Disk Utility Repair Permissions You Can Safely Ignore
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

PreparedStatement is About 60 times slower than Statements
I am highly suprised that in my programme a normal statement is a lot faster than a Prepared Statement. I am posting below both the Programmes, in one I am using Prepared Statements and in another I am using normal Statements. My OS is Win NT My Database is SQL Server 7. THe progamme extracts data from a file and inserts records in the database. In the test case I had A file of about 1440 records ie. 1440 inserts are made to the database, The database table is very large ie. It has around 126 Columns.
So for inserting 1440 record froma file the Prepared Statements take around 7 Minutes . And for reading the same file and inserting the same no of records in the same database normal Statements Take only about 7 seconds. Now the JAcva docs clearly Specify that when we need to use the same stmt many times it is better to use Prepared Satements < the results that I am Getting is clear and complete violation of what java docs say.
Here is the code with Prepared Statements

Statement Stmt=pConn.createStatemenDear Sir,
The problem with the prepared statement is that it gets prepared once the compilation is over and the program is running in memory, what effectively this means is that at the compilation time the process of putting togather the statement has been discounted and while compiling , only the javac or compiler is in memory while at runtime the user input is required so streams are in memory and also the JVM and obviously your code.
Anyways java is a little slower than other languages and processes your code as and when user interacts with code so it is not the fastest it you want to make it perform calculations or accept user input or as in ur case prepareStatement.
your normal SQL statement is taken care of at compile time and is therefore faster.

I got a new Extreme N couple days ago. Installed it as the main base, with an older Airport Extreme and an Express as WDS stations.
My MacBook Pro does not have N hardware in it (grrrr, don't get me started . But my wife's MacBook does. I got the N because I really want a networked hard drive and figured we'll all have N at some point.
I understand that the network speed gets knocked down to G speed if there are non N clients on it. However, I swear it seems noticeably slower overall than my plain old G network.
Anyone else feeling like a mixed network is slower than plain G?
Also, does anyone have a sense for how security options impact peformance?
Thanks.
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)I'm in a similar position, picking up the new AE this weekend, and form what I've read there's a better way, and here's what I'm going to do, maybe you'll want to try it:
-Setup the new AEx as an N-only network, ramped up.
-Connect either the older AEx or EXp via ethernet to it, and hang it off there in bridge mode.
-Try to put some distance between the two, at least 20 feet.
-You can set it up as a g-only network if you like, and it'll handle wireless communications from you, and the the other g base station, also offering it's services on your total network, but without decreasing the n-speed.
Hope it helps. For more info on setting this up, consult the 'Designing Airport Extreme-n Networks" manual, here (PDF). -
IPhone 4S 10x slower than iMac
Good day,
I have iPhone 4S and 27" iMac (Quad i7) on same wifi network, currently both sitting about 6 inches away from Time Capsule on same wifi network (all hardware is up to date with firmware/OS software). Were both working fine for last couple of days, but today the iPhone is over 10X slower than the iMac. From SpeedTest.net I'm getting over 30 Mbps down on the iMac, only 1.3 (at best!) from the iPhone. "4G" on At&t currently getting me 3.5 Mbps down on the iPhone. Have done hard reboots of phone and Time Capsule, still getting same results.
Anyone have any sugguestions as to what might be going on and how to fix it?
Thanks!6" is too close.. wireless stuff should have 2M at least.. having both items so close is not helping at all. Perhaps you are just showing how extreme the problem is and what you are trying to do to fix it.
If you are on lion, first thing is download the tool utility.. not use the toy.
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Go into the wireless setup.
Change wireless names, short, no spaces.. pure alphanumeric.
In advanced change the 5ghz wireless name..
ie TC24ghz and TC5ghz work fine.. GLFifer's TC 2.4ghz is not.
Fix and lock the wireless and channels.
There are exactly 3 non-overlapping wireless channels at 2.4ghz (unless you are in Europe and you can just squeeze in 4), 1, 6, 11 (13 in ETSI).
Lock to one of those.. test.. then try the next one.
You can fix the 5ghz as well although it isn't as serious.
BTW use 5ghz when available as it is much faster.
Iphone is only 2.4ghz. Having just the iphone and not sharing it with imac will help. -
Mountain Lion slower than paint drying
Ok. I need help.
I have a 2011 Macbook Pro i7 13" 2.7 currently using 10.8.3
I made the mistake of upgrading to 10.8.4. Took hours to start and had to go into recovery mode. Repaired disk - ok.
Still no go on startup
Restored from time machine back to a couple of days prior on 10.8.3
Great for about 30 minutes the slower than a country train in the artic.
it starts up in just under 15 minutes. while I go and make a coffee laden with caffiene
The biggest problem I am having is that the rainbow ball and I are now no longer speaking to each other.
It has taken over and for a small icon I don't think it deserves world domination.
This is worse than my first Mac a 1994 2vi.
Not to thrilled that my coffee intake has increased dramatically lately. I am now nearly 20 years older and my doctor has warned me about the caffeine.
Please help as this has taken three days off my life. I might as well start smoking again.Well good morning!
Downloads all gone, Firefox extensions removed, Safari closed, activity monitor is jogging away, so things are getting better.
Had already started in safe mode but now back on full startup.
Time machine whirring away.
However, apparently Disk Utility will no longer work and I quote:
"You can't use this version of the application "Disk Utility" with this version of OS X. You have "Disk Utility" 11.0 "
Not sure what that means.
Directory Utility crashes on start and wants me to force quit.
Oh and the Finder crashed.
Here is the crash report for the Finder (it's a biggie). If any one can advise on a solution, my mental health would be grateful.

MBP slower than ever...
I just upgraded to Snow Leopard, then swapped a 250gb 7200rpm hard drive for a 500gb 5400rpm hard drive. Now my computer is slower than ever. It still works, but at a much slower pace. Often the screen will freeze for up to 10 seconds before becoming operable again. This happens when doing the simplest of tasks. I am only running about 5 programs at a time anyways. This never happened on the old system. And I don't think its a matter of the slower hard drive. I was running an old MB with a smaller HD, same RPM, same RAM, and there was no problem. What gives? What should I do?
OK. Let's proceed on the premise it's not the drive. Although, I swapped an 80GB 5400 drive on an iMac G4 for a 160 GB@7200 and noticed quite a difference.
How did you install, clean install with Migration Assistant, clone, Time Machine?
There are some simple troubleshooting steps you can take.
Create a new User go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" (make it an admin acct) and test your apps in this new account, if they are faster the problem is isolated to your User and not systemwide.
If the issue is limited to your user account try starting up Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)
If your apps functions faster that way, go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items, and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving ~(yourHome)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting. Also, delete Users/yourname/Library/Caches. (on the first launch after this some apps will be slow until cache catches up.)
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
If the issue is systemwide then, you may be able to repair this with the The 10.6.2 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

I JUST DID A SPEEDTEST AND IT SHOWS ME THIS : SLOWER THAN 71% THAN THE REST OF US ??? REALLY ??
SHOULD I SWITCH ??? AND I PAY ALMOST $39 !!!
A Wirespeed modem? For sure, that thing has no Web GUI. It certainly is old but I'm glad to see it is working properly still to this day
Unless you want to replace a working modem or bring another one into service for a few minutes, have a Verizon tech with access to the DSLAM (Maybe Anthony_VZ around here) get the statistics for your circuit and post them up for us to see. Westell used to have a utility for getting Statistics from the Westell 2100 and the older Wirespeed modems but since they were purchased by Netgear the utility is hard to find or no longer exists.

The first to bring me 1Gbps Fiber for $30/m wins! -
Preview takes forever to open, much slower than on my old MacBook running Snow Leopard. It has been like this since I bought the computer last January. Any ideas?
Take it to an Apple Store for testing. If you don't get immediate satisfaction, exchange it for another one, which you can do at no cost, no questions asked, within 14 days of delivery.

Why is Thunderbolt so much slower than USB3?
I'm considering two different drives for Time Machine purposes. Both are LaCie. Either of these:
- Two Porsche 9233 drives, 4 TB each
OR
- A 2Big Thunderbolt drive, 8 TB, which I would configure as RAID 1 (a mirrored 4 TB volume)
My question is this: I've viewed both of these product pages via the Apple Store, and I noticed that LaCie's information for the Thunderbolt drive makes it a lot slower than the USB drives. Meaning: They say that the 2Big Thunderbolt drive maxes out at like 427 MB/s, whereas the Porsche USB drives max out at 5 GB/s. Why is this? Isn't Thunderbolt supposed to be a lot faster than USB (any iteration)?Not an easy question, short of a whole lot more detail on the construction of those two devices. You're likely going to need to look at the details of the drives and probably at some actual data. You're really looking for some real benchmark data that you can compare, in other words. Particularly which (likely Seagate) drives are used in those (IIRC, Seagate bought LaCie a while back), and what the specs are.
The hard disk drives themselves are a central factor, where the drive transfer rate is a key metric for big transfers (and that can be based on drive RPM as much as anything, faster drives can stream more data, but they tend to need more power and run hotter), and access (seek) time for lots of smaller transfers (faster seeks mean faster access, so good for lots of small files scattered around). Finding the details of the drives can be interesting, though. I've seen lots of cheaper disks that spin very slowly, which means that they can have nice-looking transfer times out of any cache, but then... you... wait... for... the... disk... to... spin.
The device bus interfaces can also vary (wildly) in quality. I've seen some decent ones, and I've seen some USB adapters that were absolute garbage. Some devices have decent quantities of cache, too. Others have dinky caches, and end up doing synchronous transfers to hard disks, and that's glacial compared with memory speeds.
One of your example configurations also features RAID 1 mirroring, which means that each write is hitting both disks. The writes have to pass through a controller that can do RAID 0 mirroring, and that can write the I/O requests to both drives, and that can read the data back from (if it's clever) whichever of the two drives is best positioned in related to the sectors you're after. If it's dumb, it won't account for the head positions and drive rotation and sector target. Hopefully the controller is smart enough to correctly deal with a disk failure; I've met a few RAID controllers that weren't as effective when disks had failed and the array was running in a degrated mode. In short, RAID 1 mirroring is a reliability-targeted configuration and not a performance configuration. It'll be slower. Lose a disk in RAID 1 mirroring, and you have a second disk with a second copy. If the controller works right.
If you want I/O performance without reliability, then configure for RAID 0 striping. With that configuration, you're reading data from both disks. But lose a disk in a RAID 0 striping configuration and you're dealing with data recovery, at best. If the failure is catastrophic, you've lost half your data.
But nobody's going to make this choice for you, and I'd be skeptical of any specs outside of actual benchmarks, and preferably benchmarks approximating your use. Reliability is another factor, and that's largely down to reputation in the market; how well the vendor supports the devices, should something go wrong. One of the few ways to sort-of compare that beyond the reviews is the relative length of the warranty, and what the warranty covers; vendors generally try to design and build their devices to last at least the length of the warranty.
Yeah. Lots of factors to consider. No good answers, either. Given it's a backup disk, I'd personally tend to favor eliability and warranty and less about brute speed.
Full disclosure: no experience with either of these two devices. I am working with Promise Pegasus Thunderbolt disk arrays configured RAID 6 on various Mac Mini configurations, and those support four parallel HD DTV video streams with no effort. The Pegasus boxes are plenty fast. They're also much more expensive than what you're looking at.
