Expected internal/CPU temps for MEGA 865?

What are the typical CPU/internal temperatores for the MEGA865?
Mine is running about 55C for the CPU and 41C case temp.
Is that high or ok?
I haven't tested at full load yet.

  • Correct CPU temp for a P4 3.06 with & w/out water cooling

What is the correct CPU temp for a P4 3.06?
and also what should the temp show for a P4 3.06 running
    an Innovatek Water Cooling System
    Many thanks,
    Acinom

Thanks for all the great info!!
I am running idle (cpu) at btw 44c and 46c. When I installed a game (quake) and then played it my temp rose to 52c. So I guess I am ok right now. I would like it to run a little cooler however.
    I am running Innovatek -
    CPU block
    Northbridge Block
    Video Card water block
    2 HD blocks
Innovatek Konvekt -O-Matic passive water cooling heat dissipation: over 4 pounds and 13 1/2 inches long by 9 inches high
Also I am using the NEW Nanotherm PCM+ on all blocks (cpu, gpu, northbridge)
All the blocks are smooth, no leaks. I am using an Eheim 2011 pump which also holds over 1000ml reservoir AND I have a tank-o-matic 280ml reservoir. I am using distilled water with the Innovatek conditioner (2 bottles equaling about 30% ratio). I have two fans in the system.
The only temp I can gauge is my CPU. I do not know how to check my GPU or Northbridge temps although I would like to know how, please. My ambient room temperature is around 72 to 74 degrees.

  • PSU and CPU cooler for Mega PC 651

I got my hands on a 2nd hand msi Mega PC 651 for free because the case does not contain any CPU cooler and PSU.
Where can I bye these components?

    Hi Lewis,
I presume you are refering to this guide?
    http://www.msi.com.tw/html/support/manual/note/quick_installation.pdf
I don't think there are any better instructions, other than what you might get with the CPU. Here's some breif comments that may or may not help though:
Get an anti static strap and attach it to earth, (ie I leave my main PC plugged in and attach to it's chassis, when working on another PC)
Your CPU may be attached to the heatsink with thermal paste, if it is be very careful
On my 865 the CPU heatsink is screwed to the motherboard, it may also be held on with levers. Disconnect it as appropriate
Once the heatsink is loose gently remove it, you may need to lift one side first or it may lift the whole CPU out
Once the heatsink is out lift the CPU lever, the CPU will easily lift out
you may wish to remove the old thermal paste from the CPU and heatsink, I use ArctiClean 1+2 check your CPU supplier for options
put the CPU straight into an antistatic bag
Only when you are finished playing with your PC insides should you take off the antistatic strap
If you are still unhappy with these instructions try checking out the Intel or AMD website for help
    Hope this helps
    cheers
    Rich

  • Restart Problem Fix for Mega 865

Just letting people know how I fixed my Mega 865 restart problems
    my quick story
I built my 865 with 512RAM and installed XP MCE2005. The next day I installed a 1 GIG RAM chip and the system would not boot into XP. It would get to the windows boot screen and crash when loading the hard drive drivers.... or somewhere around there. couldnt even get into safe mode. I removed the Radeon 9800 and it booted. oh no could it be the AGP Card?
well I put it back in and tried every thing,
removed the new 1 GIG RAM, same problem
    reset BIOS
    reset to Safe Settings BIOS
    reset to Optimal BIOS
repair XP recovery console, fix MBR ...etc
then I the BIOS I tried dropping the AGP Aperature size from 64MB down to 8MB. It fixed the problem.
I'm guessing the issue is really one of power. the PSU is only 230w and with the extra ram stick, it had problems putting out enough power.
so I dropped the agp aperature down to 8MB (shouldnt matter as the card has 128MB and hopefully shouldnt need system RAM)
I also turned off the serial port (set it to disabled - who uses the serial port anyway)
and disabled the modem and network card (dont need the modem and I'm using the wireless card instead of the ethernet one)
hopefully turn these things off will prevent furthur power issues when running games and stuff.

the prescott core P4s are hot enough as it is, without squeezing a 3.2ghz in there, along with a hot GPU
i would recommend the northwood core P4, as they run cooler and are just as good as prescott P4s as tests have shown
and i would also advise you to search through this forum for topics about mega 180 heat issues; the issues will apply to all mega series, just seems to cause more of a problem with the 180, but most ideas will apply to 865
first thing to check is airflow, make sure that there are no cable looms in front of heatsink, obstructing airflow to the fan. bear in mind too that by default, the fan is already blowing hot air off the AGP card onto the heatsink (yes, poor design by MSI but it can be resolved apparently by "reversing" fan airflow).

  • VGA for MEGA 865 Pro

    Hi,
I am an owner of a MEGA PC 865 Pro and i would like to install a VGA card. Which one would you propose in order to fit the box and the PSU (220W)?
I need it for gaming such as SimCity4, Civ4, Age of Empires III, etc., not for FPS or driving and flying simulators.

the best suggestions were made here:

i'm pretty sure i saw elsewhere that ATI Radeon cards don't have as high power requirements as Nvidia's, certainly there have been plenty of users using 9800Pros and 6600s with little trouble

  • Normal CPU Temps for Power Mac G5?

    Hello All,
I just wanted to know, since Im very curious about my temperatures since Im really trying to avoid the Logic Board failure due to Lead-less solder. Ive installed heat sinks on my DDR-SDRAM cards (x4 1GB Apple OEM chips (they bear the Apple Logo and have " Memory Module" on the stickers) I got four of these heat sinks: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835110105 and they work extremely well, however I dont possess the required tools to remove the processors to apply Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Paste, and these processors have not been budged one bit since purchase date. This is a Second Generation June 2004 Power Mac G5 DP 1.8GHz. The Processors temperatures are typically around 150ºF-160ºF Im using iStat Menus. Fans arent even noticeable. Nothing makes noises at all, I was just wondering if this is normal activity and if I need to take the heat sinks off and apply AS5 paste. If temps go above 160ºF, I pull the side panel off the Power Mac as well as the air deflector and I remove the "G5 plate" from over the processors and let it vent (still running normally, Im not sleeping it or shutting down) and processor temps come down to 130-135ºF. Should I worry about logic board failure if I leave them at 160ºF (both CPU A and CPU B are always the same temp (usually within 2ºF of each other) This is my only Mac other than an over clocked eMac (900MHz from 700MHz) and a DP 1.0GHz Xserve G4. I want to keep this G5 in working order as long as possible. Thanks so much. Also, by the way I have been dusting this Power Mac out every week since day one using compressed air. There has never been anything more than the slightest amount of dust in this machine, sometimes no dust at all. This machine is well looked after. Thanks in advance.
    Regards.

  • Mega 865 wireless network problem.

    Hi all,
New here and seeking a solution to a specific prob.
Have built a system from with a MSI Mega 865 Delux. P4 Chip, ATI all in wonder graphics/TV card, Maxstor 160 GB hDD.
System is specifically as a home entertainment/ video capture and record.
    Problem with wireless networking.
I have a wireless network with three PCs all with USR wireless cards and a usr 8054 router which actually does little but extend the rance of the network, Internet connection is through host computer on a single channel ISDN line.
When I connect to the network with my Mega 865 (XP TO XP) the connection is massivly slow, in fact pages on the net refuse to load it is that slow.
The 865 is causing the host compiter to drop its connection to the router for about 50 % of the time, I can see its icon flashing red as the connection is dropped and returning to green as it reconnects.
It sounds like an incompatibility issue some where but I can't find anyone else with the same problems.
    Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks, Epirb.

To my knowledge, the SP2 caused trouble for Mega 865 if a certain type of P4 CPU was installed (Prescott?)
That was so because this sort of CPU requires some "alternative" microcode to be loaded into it upon startup.
One published workaround was to replace certain file in the SP2 package with its predecessor from SP1,
another (more solid, IMHO) - to upgrade the BIOS of PC so this revised microcode is loaded with BIOS. At this point in time, I believe, the revised Mega 865 BIOS is available as an official release.
You are right, the issue is only with certain processors; see also (this includes the m-soft workaround too)
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;885626
This revised bios is not available IMHO, one of our forum collegues managed to get a beta version of a new bios, which does the trick. If you need it give us a shout.

  • Hardware Monitor 3.7 & CPU temp

    FYI,
The newest version on Hardware Monitor (version 3.7 from Marcel Bresnik) now supplies its own CPU temperature monitor extension and no longer relies on SpeedIt, it supports monitoring the CPU temp of both cores. No it doesn't support the throttling capability that SpeedIt was or is supposed to but it at least accesses the real CPU core temp.
As much as I thought SpeedIt would be cool, it just hasn't lived up to its potential and is a development mess. I've been using HM for awhile and love it, had to rely on SpeedIt for CPU temp for awhile, gotta love this new version.
    Cheers,
    Peter

Hey thanks for the heads up Peter. It works beautifully as you say..

  • MEGA 865 CPU heatsink FAN FAILURE.

Got my Mega 865 less than six months ago, and the CPU heatsink fan is making annoying loud grinding noises.
Anyone know where I can get an adequate replacement FAST online in the USA? (I need it in
The fan is the 60mm x 60mm x 13mm near the AGP slot, Delta Electronics model AFB0612VHC and the specs are DC12V 0.36A 28cfm 3pin motherboard connector.
Is it worth contacting MSI Support? Can they FedEx me a fast replacement overnight? (If it's under warranty, great, if not, fine I'll pay for it.)
Otherwise, the MEGA865 is great, I liked it a lot.
    Config:
    ATI Radeon 9600 (fanless)
    Hauppauge PVR250MCE
    3.2 ghz Northwood
    250 GB Maxtor
OEM NEC 2500A DVD RW black.
    and
    Windows Media Center 2005 (rocks)
Thanks for any help you can give.

I got the MEGA from newegg.
I'd rather MSI just mailed me a fan, not a whole heatsink. Bubble wrap one and drop it in a FedEx overnight envelop.
Even if it's under warranty, I'd totally pay for a new one if I could get it fast.
We're talking about a $15 item (+whatever FedEx overnight costs). I don't really care if I have to buy one myself. Unfortunately I looked on the web, and no one seems to sell this exact fan anywhere.
Wow I'm impressed. I phoned MSI USA support, was on hold for
Great job MSI support. I'm astonished it was this easy.

  • "Easy" way to lower MEGA 180 CPU Temp

Let me start off by saying I haven't done this yet but I think it would work.  I built a Mega 180 based machine for a customer and have had nothing but problems with it.  I got a call from her last night to tell me that the CPU temp on the display is in the 70 C range and she is getting nervous about it (frankly, so am I).  I'm picking up the PC from her in a few days to see if I can lower the CPU temp any.  Here's what I'm thinking of doing:
    1) Since I already lapped the bottom of the heatsink and used Artic Silver thermal grease, there's nothing else I can do in that area.  It's already optimal.
    2) The heatsink is 100% copper with lots of cooling fins.  There isn't a better thermal material for a heatsink, within reason.  Aluminum is no good.  Basically, the design of the heatsink is good, but not perfect.  First, why they would design the sink to suck hot air off of the video card and blow it through the fins is beyond me.  Naturally, the CPU will never be cooler than the air that's being used to cool it.  The heat sink needs fresh, cool air.
    3) To provide the heatsink with fresh cool air I plan on first, turing the big fan on the sink around so it blows out, not in.  Second, I plan on replacing the little fan with a bigger fan and position it so it blows in, not out.  Then I plan on making a short duct that attaches over the fan on the right (with the front of the PC facing you) and extend the duct a few inches to the right so it is less than an inch from the side of the case.  Lastly, I plan on using some lexan and making a very small deflector to put on the heatsink's exhaust fan.  It will be about 1/2 inch wide and as long as the fan (80mm?).  It will be tilted at a 45 degree angle.  The deflector will channel the hot air away from the video card and towards the front left side of the case.  This will avoid trading one heat problem (CPU) for another (video card).
If all goes well, a drop of 10 C under maximum load should be achieved.  I'll let you know how this turns out.
I may also try the following:
    1) Buy some RAM heat sinks and using thermal glue, glue them to the hard drive.
    2) Position a 40mm fan so it blows on the heat sinks on the hard drive.
    3) Position another 40mm fan so it blows across the chipset's heat sink.

god damn thats a great idea, why didnt I think of that
I lapped my heatsink last weekend, the hardware store where i got my sand paper didnt have any grid over 600 so I had to settle with that.  But I'm still pleased with the results. I figured that that plus some some Artic Silver 5 would get me a bit on my way.
I would have documented it with my camera if the batteries just wasnt out :/
At the same time I installed a "silent" 15db@1500rpm 80x80mm Everflow fan on the left side of the case (when facing the front) that blows the air in. All of these efforts improved the temperature just a bit. The noise increased a bit but it isnt all that much trouble consithering I've spent my last couple of months with my ears next to a server that has the lovely sound level of around 60db (note: no case fans on the server at all)
As I recall the idle temperature used to be over 60c and now it sometimes drops below 50c. But most of the times its around 53-55c (all of this is at around 25c ambient temperature). But the heat problem while gaming is still a huge problem. When it hits around 70 the computer crashes.
But before my efforts to do something about it, it would die within 10min of high load. Now it can take up to about an hour (depending on how the ambient temperature is).
Next up I think I'm gonna try out your idea. Switch the fans, and maybe even install another Everflow fan having 4 fans totaly pulling the air through the case (but from right to left this time :P)
why call it MSI Entertainment Gaming Applicance if you cant entertain yourself by gaming on it ? =P

I would like to ask you for your assistance.
I have purchased your product(MSI MEGA 865 barebone)and also processor

Every time I switch on PC, the monitor dispays following note:

I have upgraded BIOS on the last version 1.2 but the message comes up again
    and again.
Can you advise me what to do?
    Thank you
    Daniel

Odd problem, I did not see that problem when I inserted my CPU .
That Prescott works in my machine (even on 1.0 bios, but they run a bit hot there)
Maybe an open door ... but have you tried saving the bios. In other words just touch (modify and remove a change) one value and save it ?
Have you tried to restore defaults on your bios. (dunno what it is called exactly)
Did you insert an other CPU before using the prescott one ???
BTW this is a user forum, so we are not MSI reps.

  • Mega 865 has problem Prescott cpu

Sounds like they didn't get everything worked out in the BIOS prior to release.  Ever download and install a new point release of something and feel like it hasn't been thoroughly tested?
That's because many point releases are really beta releases.  It's evil in many ways, but it's the way of life for many software vendors/shops.

  • How to get into BIOS of Sat P200D? What is correct temp for CPU/VGA load?

I tried everything, pressing ESC after power-up,F1, ESC/F1, F2....i cannot get into the bios.
What is the proper procedure to get into the BIOS? I used the latest BIOS 1.70 from Toshiba homepage, i remember i didn't have this problem with the older bios.
Furthermore, what are correct temps for the CPU under extreme load as well as VGA testing with OCCT/Furmark or everest?
If i run OCCT (extreme CPU stress test) i am getting some extreme numbers up to 95 degree on the CPU...
    Thanks!

    *SOLVED!!!*
It was indeed the case that any standard VGA resolution (like bios screen and bootup screen) was not displayed on the laptop!
Thats why i only saw a black screen!
I plugged an external monitor on it, and i see i am actually in BIOS.
So i went into the BIOS (using the other monitor) and changed the the setting "Analog + External", and now it works and i also have the toshiba logo back and everything
