Experience slow file server performance

Hi all,
currently we are expecting some strange problems with our fileserver. It is a Windows Server 2012 server with newest hardware. After one to two weeks uptime, Windows 7 clients cannot load their explorer window. It takes a huge time while the green bar in
the address bar is trying to load the explorer overview and finally stops with a blank explorer window.
The shares can still be accessed through UNC commands and the fileserver can be reached with a ping command. This error doesn't occur when opening the explorer window on another server.
On the fileserver I can see a lot of open files called "\msftewds".
I have found an article of microsoft describing this problem but there was no final solution for me:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822219/en-us
The only workaround for the moment is to restart the server (what is not that easy because it's productive). After a restart the "\msftewds" files are gone in the open files overview.
Appreciate any help. :)
Best regards
Dennis

Hi Dennis,
From the description a lot of open files exist which seems to be the cause. Instead of reboot, please test to manually kill these processes in MMC - Share Folders - Open Files and see if the performance will back to normal.
If so, try to find out the exact process which locked these files. Meanwhile please help collect a screenshot of open files for helping us understand the current situation.
Meanwhile we have a forum FAQ which provided most general steps to troubleshoot network performance related issue. Please see if it could help.
If you have any feedback on our support, please send to [email protected]
I tried to kill all of the open "\msftewds" files. They disappeard and then came back again. I was
unable to kill them.
How can I find out which process is locking an opened file? I'm sorry but at the moment I can't give
you a useful screenshot because at the moment we are fine with the fileserver. As soon as the problem will be back I'll upload a screenshot.

  • Extremely slow file server performance

I have a Time Capsule (1TB, late 2008) which I use as a file server. The client of interest is a Mac mini, slightly newer. The connection is 802.11n at 100+ MB/s. I can see no evidence of interfering networks.
Anyway, dragging largeish (350MB) files from the file server to the Mac mini using finder is sometimes incredibly slow (1hour +). Tranfering the same files using firefox, a file:///Volumes... URL and "Save link as" takes perhaps 5 minutes.
General network connection and wider internet access is fine.
Any ideas what the problem is?
    Everything is fully updated.

  • Slow file server download speeds

I have a Mac OS X 10.3 Server on my local network, which is primarily used as a file server.
My MacBook, running 10.6.7, using AirPort Extreme, is painfully slow and downloading files from this file server. Right now, it is estimating 14 hours to download a 400 MB file. The computer itself is only a few feet from the Airport base station.
    Other clues:
    1) All other Airport services seem normal (internet access, internet downloading) for this computer; so I don't see how it can be the Airport itself.
    2) Uploading files to this file server seem to be running at normal speeds.
    3) Downloading from other computers (running 10.5.8) from the file server are normal speeds, so I would think that would rule out the file server itself.
    4) Activity Monitor shows only around 8 - 17 KB per second transfer
I believe that this problem started after the last OS update. Or security update, whichever it was.

Just wanted to post that I solved the problem.
It had to do with using the Motorola MSTATEA 2210-02-1022 DSL Modem/Router that we received from AT&T to do our Routing instead of the Time Capsule we had on our network.  I thought the Motorola DSL Modem/Router would do a better job of routing and was WRONG.
Once I put the Motorola DSL Motem/Router into "bridge mode" and set up the Time Capsule to be the router for the network, the problem went away.
So the Motorola DSL Modem/Router could not handle even the low traffic of our few computer network without screwing up the wireless traffic.

  • Bad file system performance in OS X Mavericks

After installing OS X Mavericks I experience bad file system performance approx. three times per day: Opening Finder and trying to a access a directory gets my MacBook Air (1.8 GHz Intel Core i7 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 with 250 GB Flash) stuck every approx. 10th time, not always. Same on my brandnew MacBook Pro 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 with 1 TB Flash. This is not a hardware problem. It is a Mavericks problem. Under Mountain Lion I did not have any problems.
Is there any way to get rid of the annoying wait cycles?

  • Slow applications start from win 2012 file server using win 7 workstations

I hope someone can help me with why applications are slow to load i have replaced a 8 year old server running  win 2003 and replaced it with dell t620 running win 2012 r2 it is like 20 times faster but it is slower than the old server. the office has
7 win 7 x64 machines all our applications are running from win 2012 file server. The server is set up as following the server runs with two hyper-v machines one machine runs ad, file server, dhcp, dns and printer server and the other is domino server and remote
    desktop.
the machine is more than capable but it is not so i started reading after i run out of ideas. i looked every where but the issue is with the server after trying everything else i did a simple test If i go to the application folder and click on it apps load
instantly if i then type a unc path it takes from instant load to 3 and a bit seconds the same as the workstations. The same speed if I use ip address.
    network cards are intel
i would really appreciate if somebody has suggestions that i could try
    thank you

    Hi,
Do you mean that applications in the application folder start slowly when you access the application folder on the Windows 2012 R2 file server from Windows 7 workstations using UNC path or IP address. Do all the files in the application folder have the same
issue? Please create a shared folder on the file server, then access the shared folder from Windows 7 workstations to check if the issue still exists.
You could disable SMBv3 on server 2012 to check if the issue related to SMB protocol.

Warning: We do not recommend that you disable SMBv2 or SMBv3. Disable SMBv2 or SMBv3 only as a temporary troubleshooting measure. Do not leave SMBv2 or SMBv3 disabled.

  • It's very slow to access file server after installed SP1 of Win7.

I found it's become very slow to access shared files on file server after installed win7 SP1, (windows6.1-KB976932-X86.exe),  access same file, the win7 without sp1 is fast in 5 secs, but the pc with sp1 need more than 30 secs. And
I tried to removed the sp1, everything goes fine, access fast as others.
I don't understand what's the reason and which feature affected it, I believe the sp1 can help Win7 be more safety, but why the performance on it get worse.
And I didn't find the same question or tips on forum or website, do you really haven't the issue?

  • Slow Files Copy File Server DFS Namespace

I have two file servers running on VM both servers are on different physical servers.
    Both connect with dfs namespace.
The problem part is both servers never have same copy speed.
Sometime very slow files copy about 1MBps on FS01 and fast copy 12MBps on FS02.
Sometime fast on FS01 and slow on FS02.
    Sometime both of them slow..
So as usual I reboot the servers. Doesn't work.
Then I reboot the DC01 also doesn't work. There is another brother DC02.
After I reboot DC02, one of the FS become normal and another FS still slow.
FS01 and FS02 randomly. They never get faster speed together.
Users never complain slow FS because 1MBps is acceptable for them to open word excel etc.,.
The HUGE problem is I don't have backup when the slow FS days.
The problem since two weeks I'm giving up fixing it myself and need help from you expert guys.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Since the slow copy is also occurred when you tried the direct copy from both shared folder, you could enable the disk write cache on the destination server to check the results.

  • File Server Role: Slow access for "opened files" and slow Explorer browsing

Since we migrated our fileserver from Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2012 we are facing two major problems:
    1. Opening files which are already opened by other users takes about 1 minute before the file actually opens. This is not only for Office files such as Excel and Word, but also for other (not office) files. Again, this problem only rises when the file(s)
is/are already opened by another user. There seems to be a sort of "Lock" check time which is about 45 to 60 seconds.
    2. The other problem is browsing via Explorer through the network drive (all clients are Windows 7 clients). Half of the time there is some kind of "hick up" with displaying the results of the folder. I cannot figure out a patern, but if there
is no "hick up" then browsing is very fast (also in the busiest times of the working day)... If there is a "hick up" the result can take about 50 seconds to display the content of a folder.
I suspect the SMB implementation / settings of Windows Server 2012 which are causing the problems...
    Things I tried:
    1. Changed the Oplocks wait time to 10 seconds (which is the minimum). The result is that openening files does indeed go some faster (still taking about 45 seconds).
    2. Disabled SMB2: the result is that browsing is fast... Opening files does go faster. BUT: we are then facing other problems like some files are not able to open... This setting was, after getting a lot of complaints from the users, changed back to enabled
    SMB2.
    3. Within the NIC card properties I disabled "QoS packet Scheduler", "Link-Layer Topology Discovery Mapper I/O Driver", "Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder" and IPv6 (as we only use IPv4).
All above with not the promising results.
The server is a dedicated (virtual machine on vSphere 5.1) fileserver.
Please Advice since this is not workable, and we have postponed the migration of the fileserver for our aother location.

    Hi Dave,
I suggest you disable all third party applications like Anti-Virus application to test if it could reduce the waiting time when accessing a file.

  • File Server/AFP gets slow after a week or so

    Hi all,
I manage a file server at our office here, with around 20-30 users, running 10.3.9 server. Users connect via AFP for general office duties, but also remote-desktop into a windows server using Rdesktop via X11. They use SMB to access their files from the windows side.
I find after a week or so that logins to the shares, and general file access gets incredibly slow, and grinds to a halt eventually, but comes good after the server is rebooted.
It is usually quick to authenticate in any case, but takes an age to bring up the list of shares that the users can pick from (probably 10-15 at most depending on their permissions). Even after a fresh reboot it takes about 10 seconds to bring up the list of shares to pick from. Is there any way to fix this?
I find that is someone has their computer set to calculate folder sizes on a server drive/share it can make the server grind to a standstill, but even with everyone set up correctly it still goes slowly all by itself after a few days/weeks of running. Logging in via Remote Desktop becomes slow at this point too.
I've tried some of the tips in this thread below with only limited success.

  • Crystal Reports Moved from one file server to another - very slow opening

    Hello,
I am new here, and I am in need of a solution. If I am not in the correct forum, please advise.
Our crystal reports were moved from an old file server to a new file server.  Once the old file server was shut down the reports opened very slow in Designer and in our 3rd party application.  Our server team determined that the reports are still attempting to connect to the old file server.  If the old file server is brought online or dns is changed to reflect another machine that it can make a connection to, it opens with no delay.
For some reason, not every report is affected.  Most of the reports are Crystal 8.5, but I have some Crystal XI reports that do the same thing.  I can't find any reference in the reports to any file server/location....
I need to resolve this issue on the Crystal 8.5 version due to the application that we are running.
Is there a way to fix this other than to recreate the reports (I have over 400 of them)?
Any assistance or advice is appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Nancy

    Hi Nancy,
The server info still needs to be updated. Are you setting location for each subreport also?
Possibly this registry key will help, I only have CR 2008 installed so you'll have adjust for what ever you are using:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Business Objects\Suite 12.0\Crystal Reports\DatabaseOptions - VerifyStoredProceduresOnFirstRefresh = No
    and
    VerifyStoredProceduresOnSetLocation = No
    And
    VerifyWhenDBDriverUpgraded = No
    And
    ViewOutOfPlaceSubreports = No
Close CR designer before making any changes. And the usual warning about modifying the registry.
    Thank you
    Don

  • BI Server performance too slow

    Hi experts,
I am facing an issue, my OBIEE sits on a Unix Platform. And many time the server performance is too slow, when I check the processes, Java under Orabi user is using more than 50% of the CPU utilization. I need to find the root cause behind it, as it is the production system and is affecting many users.
    Thanks in advance.
    MT

    Thanks Prassu,
Yes the Server is performing too much calculations, but they are required as need to cache reports at daily level also,
I have an observation that the MAX_CACHE_ENTRY_SIZE [MAX_CACHE_ENTRY_SIZE = 1 MB;] parameter is set only for 1 MB, I can understand that if any query fetching more data than 1 MB will not be cached. But is there any chance that this will affect the server as well.
    Thanks

  • Slow file share a new 10.8.4 Mac Mini server

    Hi,
It's finally time to upgrade our file server. Currently I have about 16 users connecting to MacPro tower with xServe RAID attached. The MacPro is running 10.6.8 server. It's replacement is a new MacMini server with a Promise Pegases R6 connected by thunderbolt. The MacMini is running a clean install of 10.8.4 server. The users are running 10.8.4.
While testing the new 10.8 server, I noticed that file transfer speeds are scientifically slower than the old 10.6 server. To test the speed, I have been using a 1GB zip file. When I copy the file from the 10.6 server to a workstation it take about 20 to 30 seconds to copy it. When I copy the same file from the 10.8 server, it takes 8 to 12 minutes.
I have DNS running the 10.8 server and have the workstations in the test pointing to it. changeip -checkhostname comes back fine. Both servers and the workstations are on the same switch. I have tried differnt cables.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Henry

Unfortunately not. The AFP log does not show anything abnormal. The system log show me connecting. I don't see anything unusual in it. I've posted it bellow just in case I'm missing something.
I don't have Open Directory running yet. The only services running are File Sharing and DNS. Is there any where else I should look?

  • Extremely slow file transfer from wifi server to MacBook Pro

I am experiencing extremely slow file download speeds from my wifi server to my MacBook Pro. I have just carried out a test - transferring a 16.5Mb folder took 8 mins, 24 secs. Transferring the same folder to my iMac G5 takes less than 3 seconds. Also, copying the same folder from my MacBook Pro to my wifi server only takes 22 seconds. Any suggestions PLEASE!!!!!

Try getting it on the Mac using something other than iPhoto.
In Windows, it would simply be a matter of opening Explorer and copying the file(s).  I'm fairly certain that Mac has a similar feature, but I'm not familiar with Macs.
Not really an iPhone issue... more of an issue with the application being used to import the file.

  • Connection to file server slow and unreliable after upgrading to Leopard

I have a client with a G5 PowerMac (3 GB memory) who has been connecting reliably to a network file server (Windows based) at her company for years. Upon upgrading to Leopard the connections is slower. Or, rather, opening the root level directory is fast. The second level folder is fast. The third level is fast. Beyond that she gets the spinning cursor and it can take a long time to open, even if there are only a couple files inside. Also, navigating back to the first level I see a spinning cursor and "Connecting..." as though the Mac had lost connection with the file server simply by opening the volume. Sometimes she has to Force Quit the Finder (which reports "not responding". Weird. Any ideas out there?

    Hi Greg,
It was my second visit to this company, and it was for something else that I was focussed on. I don't know what kind of server they are running. It's a PC house running Exchange servers so it's probably some kind of Microsoft system. If the problem persists I'l get more info next week when they reopen after the holiday.
