I am getting frustrated with my Netgear 7550 modem/router with attached Netgear WNDR4300 router when playing Xbox. It will often drop connection in the middle of an online game and restart itself. I am considering replacing them with the new Netgear AC1900. I have ATT DSL.I would hate to spend $250 for the AC1900 if it won't solve my problem.

1. I’m writing from a rural town in Southern Nepal, very close to India. I’m planning to create a new WI-FI network at a small monastery here. Ideally, we will have two parallel wireless networks: the first network produced by an ADSL router/modem and a second network produced by another router in “repeater” mode.
2. Earlier, someone suggested that, when I post a question, I should provide as many details as possible about the situation here. Forgive me if there is “too much information”. I have to make a trip to the US to buy new networking equipment, so I very much want to get this right. Once I return here, I’ll be pretty much stuck with whatever I get in the US.
3. The future routers will live next to each other in an office and could be linked by a cable (if this is the best route to go). We do not wish to “expand” the network (in the sense of making a larger WI-FI network), but rather wish to simply have two networks, hence one ADSL router/modem and one router with the “repeater” function (out-of-the-box without any jerry rigging). Both WI-FI signals need to travel approximately 100 (largely unobstructed) feet.
4. If my dreams come true, the second router would be an Apple Airport Extreme (AX). An Apple router would be ideal because my experience with Apple routers is happy: they are easy to set up, reliable, and secure. Moreover, we use Apple computers and iOS devices here (and the new AX has the “ac” thing which will be preferable as we replace old machines with new ones).

Yet, from reading posts and having my prior questions answered on this website, it may be that with an ADSL modem/router, all the ease and happiness of the Apple ecosystem is lost: while Apple routers seem to connect with each other easily, problems appear to arise when users try to inter-marry our non-Apple products with Apples.
6. Our current, super-crappy 2wire 2701hg-t (ADSL modem/router) covers the 100-foot distance without a problem when it is working and there is Ethernet flowing to us. Frequently, our connection is very bad, and I may be unfairly judging the 2wire 2701hg-t. But, based on user reviews on the America Amazon.com, the 2wire 2701hg-t is pretty terrible: first it is simply old and second, among other problems, it seems to have a poor quality power supply unit. I do observe that it frequently seems to be recycling from scratch as if it had turned off and restarted. In any case, we are replacing it since it may be about 4 or 5 years old.
7. In previous posts on this forum, “LaPastenague” responded to some of my earlier questions about AX and ADSL. Among other things, he pointed out that (1) line-attenuation may be contributing to our poor connection and (2) we must choose a modem/router that is suitable for “long lines.” I’ve looked at our current modem/router statistics page; however, there are no statistics for line-attenuation or noise. (As you will see below, my strategy is to get the “better” modem/router that is suitable for long lines.)
8. Concerning our ADSL service, these are the facts I’ve gleaned from looking at the current router’s configuration pages:
Connection Type: PPPoE
Currently, the router is configured to use WPA-PSK security.
Connection Speed: Incoming: 1024 kbps & Outgoing: 509 kbps

Broadband Link Diagnostics:
DSL Synchronization: UP
G.DMT Signal: UP

9. The ISP (Nepal Telecom) doesn’t supply a modem/router; however, they do have a list of (at times ancient) hardware and hardware vendors:

Concerning what equipment is available here, what I have observed is that generally the ADSL modem/routers for sale locally, and in the far-away capital Kathmandu, and in nearby India are often also available in the United States, but they are the cheaper, older models. I will have to buy the new equipment in the US this year. At a different institution nearby, they are using the TP-Link modem/router td-w89016 which they purchased locally, I believe.
11. Based in part on LaPastenague’s earlier advice, I want to buy the TP-LINK TD-W8980 N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit ADSL2+ Modem Router (2.4GHz 300Mbps+5Ghz 300Mbps, IPv6 Compatible). This appears to be the most popular ADSL device on Amazon now.
Will this modem/router work EASILY with the Airport Extreme in the manner I’ve described? That is, connecting the two with a cable and creating two WI-FI networks.

I think there are a lot of good reasons to use an AX router. Of course, if it is just going to be very cumbersome then, we would be loosing one of the best parts of using Apple products. So, whoever feels knowledgeable enough to reply to this post, please be sincere if you think it is better to avoid the Apple. Apple can rest assured that I will buy other things from them!
In that case, I’d likely buy a second TP-Link device to create a second network:
TL-Wa801NP [AP Mode Multi-SSID Mode AP Client Mode Repeater Mode (WDS / Universal) AP+ Bridge mode (point-to-point / point to Multi-point)].

I am not sure if there are different interfaces but my 2wire does an excellent job with line info.
I get into this from browser.. using main IP.. in my case 10.0.0.138/MDC
In your case it should be whatever the IP of the 2wire is, followed by /mdc
Give it a try.
As you can see it shows vendor and loads of info about the line.
I rate it the best domestic modem for line info.
A good modem actually albeit a lousy router.
MDC is the diagnostics and Management Console.

You are not repeating.. you are simply setting up two routers which are interconnected, so one is dependent on the other.. ie one is your adsl modem router and that will take the main router function. Your second router is really not working as a router, but as wireless access point (and switch if you plug things in).
That is perfectly fine. You are not roaming in this case since both routers are running different wireless names and networks.. but they are actually using same IP range.. all devices are on the one IP network with two different wireless access points.

Apple router is fine for this. Easy to configure out of the box.

The problem arises when you try and interconnect using wireless extend or repeater.. you are not using wireless to extend, you are using ethernet. Wired has no issues.

It is a good choice.. It should be fine considering how poor your line is.. this modem is proving to have a couple of bugs.. it does not handle torrents well but I would suggest your system is not being used for that purpose. It has some port forwarding issues. Again you are probably not going to overload it.

Absolutely best.. only decent method.

Bridge. Although if it gives issues there is another method, although rather complex to setup.. not something to worry about now.

Only the adsl modem has the ISP authentication.. it is the box that does the link. The TC just piggy backs.
The passwords on the TC are for its Admin, wireless and disk access.

hmmm.. I am biased because I see the issues not all the good stories..
The latest airport and Time Capsule seem to have a few pretty severe bugs.. if they happen to hit you, they are extremely hard to fix if you are in the middle of Nepal. And Apple service centre is a long long way away.
I cannot answer your question from the point of view of a person on the ground in remote area. If the economics of the purchase works for you, great. Go for it.
In terms of wireless coverage.. the Asus AC models or Netgear R7000 kill the Apple. Sorry but it is just fact.

That is average.. if you look at the apple router in the worst location by changing the filters, it comes out worse again.
I cannot post the URL to our local forum here.. (apple doesn't allow it). But in testing with apple clients the asus still beat Apple router soundly.
Pure wireless range is not the only consideration.. but in a mixed environment and since the wireless on the 8980N is not too bad.. then buy Apple router for apple client devices makes good sense.
Maybe the older Gen5.. or two of them.. would do a better job.. with a bit more tested and known hardware.
One thing you do need to check.
Routers from every other brand allow you to select country. Any country from anywhere in the world. Apple routers do not.
If you buy an airport in North America it is coded to North America and offers just a few countries.. USA, Canada I suppose.. what else is North America??
You cannot change it to Nepal.
To get the one for Nepal you must buy the model that covers, South Asia I guess.. I am not sure which it is.
See what the license information is for wifi in Nepal as it might be very different to US and therefore illegal for you to run it in Nepal.

This only applies to the Apple.. the TP-Link etc allows you to choose Nepal or correct country regulations for wifi.
Buying modems has one tricky bit.. that the actual adsl ATM channel is different in different parts of the world. No modem is usually impossible to setup but some can be difficult if it is pre-configured for US.. this is easy to overcome generally as you can download a firmware for another locality, so you can have local settings.

Configuring a new Airport Extreme with an existing Wireless Modem Router

I have an existing Wireless Modem Router (brand: Riger) and have an existing wireless network. Recently purchased an AirPort.
What is the best way to install a new AirPort Extreme? I know i have to connect the AirPort Extreme to the modem via ethernet cable.
Do i allow the AirPort to use the existing setting from my old wireless modem router?
Or do i create a new network with different name and password?
Anybody can help or show me where i can look up on this?

Hello akramaziz. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Since the new 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) will be connected to the existing Wireless Modem Router by Ethernet, it should be reconfigured as a bridge.
(ref: AirPort Utility > Select the AEBSn > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode))
As a bridge, the AEBSn will allow the existing router to continue to provide both NAT & DHCP services for all network clients.

The AirPort Extreme is a router, but it is not a modem. You still need your existing cable or DSL modem. That device is usually supplied by your ISP and may or may not include the functions of a router.

Using Airport Extreme (802.11n) with Netgear Wireless Modem Router

I have a quick question, can I use the Airport Extreme in a wireless modem router?(http://www.netgear.co.uk/wirelessadslrouterdg834g.php)
By plugging the Airport into the Netgear router would I be able to by pass and run a network this way. I have a 802.11n enabled MacBook and Apple TV, the Netgear is the weakest link!!!

neptune2000's post was implying that you connect the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to the Netgear.
The AEBS does NOT contain a modem. Therefore you will need a modem, either the Netgear or another.

Any experience using one of Verizon's phones as a modem, bluetooth or usb?

My Kyocera slider just died Likely a software corruption according to tech support, and Verizon no longer supports these so they don't have the wares to flash or otherwise fix it. Rather than face a 2-4 week turnaround to sending it to TX + being out $, I must get a new phone.
My difficulty is in finding one which I can use as a data modem, either via Bluetooth or usb data cable. Based on some very informative posts in the archives I have pored over Verizon's selection & eliminated any that are V-Cast. Now I am having difficulty finding a phone that has USB drivers beyond what they make/support for Winders. I'd prefer bluetooth as I can also pair it with my Palm Tungsten T2, but will settle for whatever way I can make this happen. Plus I wanted to see if anyone reading this had luck connecting with any of these phones...

I prefer to stick it out w/Verizon as data calls are billed against monthly minutes, plus so far as I know it's the only phone I can get even an analog signal from when I go up to remote areas of Maine. Keep getting disconnected to Internet using 2Wire modem/router

I have a Mac Sno Leopard 10.6.3 OS. We use AT&T/Bellsouth DSL through a 2Wire Modem/Router. I keep getting the "You are Not Connected to the Internet" Message and lose my connection for a short while, and then it comes back up. This will sometimes happen several times in an hour; other times it will go for hours and be fine. No systemic pattern; very intermittent. When I use my Mac Book on other routers, it is fine. Anyone have any suggestions? Apple has been unable to help me.

I had the same experience myself (brand new 2Wire router and new MacBook Pro) and spent some time searching for answers. Currently, the only thing I found to work consistently is to launch Terminal and have it ping the router constantly while I am connected. This eliminates all the drops I was experiencing. I left my MacBook Pro connected for over a week straight to confirm the drops are totally gone.
Steps to ping the router in OS 10.5.8:
1. Open System Preferences
2. Click on Network
3. Highlight AirPort on left side
4. Click 'Advanced'
5. Click 'TCP/IP'
6. Highlight the number series after Router: (should be similar to ###.###.#.###)
7. Copy to the clipboard
8. Under Applications > Utilities, launch "Terminal"
9. Wait a few seconds for it to initialize and present a prompt
10. type "ping", then a space, then paste the router IP address
11. Hit Return
This will work for as long as your system is powered on. You will need to repeat the process if you restart.

WRT54GL using old modem/router as modem component?

I'm constantly having little issues with my ADSL modem/router, which is some Taiwanese unbranded model that my girlfriend provided.
As such, I'm thinking about buying the WRT54GL, and using Tomato or perhaps OpenWRT.
Given that this is just a router, I'll need an ADSL modem too. Will my current modem/router model be able to perform as the modem only?
(Or does it really depend exactly what my router is capable of? If so, are there any settings that I should look out for in the router web config pages, because I'm quite new to this stuff.)

Tomato may be easier yes - less modular, so more stuff out of the box. You barely need the command line anymore with the latest OpenWrt though, if you do not want to use it.
As for being a seed box - you need a way to connect a HD to your router for that, and the WRT54G(L) series don't have any USB ports for example to my knowledge, so it depends on your connectors (and available RAM, most importantly).

Modem/Router to use with Time Capsule

Hi forum,
I would like to work around a DOUBLE-NAT problem that I am encountering in my business network.
Currently, my ADSL modem/router is an Orange Livebox which creates its own internal network (192.168.1.x).
My Time Capsule is connected through ethernet to this LiveBox in DHCP/NAT mode. It creates a second internal network (10.0.1.x). All the rest of the network equipment is attached wirelessly or by ethernet to the TC network. My goal is to manage the network (ports, dhcp addresses, etc.) through my Time Capsule, not through the Livebox. That is why I configured TC in DHCP/NAT mode.
The downside is that it creates a Double-Nat problem, because each packet is going through both networks (192.168.x.x and 10.0.x.x). Lately, Apple Support is telling me that this Double-Nat issue could be the cause for failing to answer iPhone calls directly from my MacBook Pro (new feature of Yosemite) when connected in my business network, where it works perfectly when connected from home in where there is no Double-Nat issue.
I contacted Orange Livebox technical support and asked wether it was possible to de-activate the router portion of the Livebox, at least the DHCP/NAT portion of the box since I would not mind to keep the built-in firewall of the box. But the answer was no. It looks like I cannot turn off the router portion of the Livebox at all, so my only solution for them is to enable the bridge mode on TC, which I still don't want.
I was told to buy a ADSL2 modem and replace my Livebox with it, so TC would effectively become the only router on the network. That looks to me like a satisfying solution (at least on paper).
Would any of you know and recommend a particular brand/model to work with Time Capsule. Ideally, what i would like this modem/router to do is :
Modem part: connect with my provider in ADSL2 and provides my credential to establish the connection
Router part:
DHCP/NAT = OFF
built-in firewall = ON
I assume it would be the best way to get the best of my Time Capsule (802.11n - 3rd Gen).

I have just purchased a US Robotics ADSL MOdem&Router Model no: 9108.
My problem is this, i can connect to internet and ichat with no problem however, i sometimes get this "insuficient bandwidth" error message.
I also cant send or recieve any files anymore, which i could before.
I have tried to set up my virtual server settings by enabling/opening the ports i have seen mentioned on these forums but none of that helpd.
I also had an issue with the port 16403-16834 (may be wrong on that coz dont have em in front of me now)...anyway, when i tried to add those ports i got an error saying soming like "invalid port"
My main issue is sending files and this "insufficient bandwidth" problem.
Can anyone help me please???

It does not have any set for iChat as I use UPnP.
I have an option to set TCP or UDP or Both for the Protocols.
iChat logs on and sends Text chats, files and pics on Port 5190. One protocol is used for Logging on and basic Text chats. The other protocol is used for Sending Pics in Chats (Direct Messaging), Sending files and Group chats.
The change to port 443 will allow you to at least log on and Text chat. It may not allow you to send files as this is the other protocl and can not be changed in iChat and therefore will still be blocked.
It might also be that the other AV ports are also blocked.
IPNetMonitorX may be useful in checking this out.
It has a trial period.
You need to scan the ports iChat uses for AV chats against a know IP.
Find a Buddy who can tell you their Public IP address and has iChat open.
Test ports 5190 on TCP and UDP and test these singularly for UDP 5060, 5678.
Test this group all in one go on UDP 16384-16403
Where I was talking about lowest to highest, was about Start and End ports. You listed 16384-16403 as 16403-16384 which was the reverse order and likely to cause the error you had.

Experience as new BT broadband customer

Some feedback on my BT broadband experience
Previous customer of BE broadband very happy with them except speed and no likelihood of them doing LLU on FTTC
After receiving a letter I ordered Infinity 2, the sign up process worked fine, promising 80 down and 20 up on a line testOnce I got a BT login I turned BT FON OFF, not wanting to be broadcasting my presence on wifi
Openreach (aka BT despite them telling you otherwise) turned up on time despite heavy rain, installed the service which worked immediately.
75Mb downstream 17Mb upstream immediately, 5ms ping - excellent!
Then this morning using wireless sniffer found that 2 new wireless AP's had appeared BT Openzone-H and BT fon. Tried to turn them off - failed. Logged in to BT found FON had been switched back on WITHOUT my permission. Switched it off again.
Found out couldn't disable in router. Then tried turning wireless off completely. Blue light went off (manual says that means wireless is off) but those AP's were still enabled - ie the home hub and manual are lying. Reckoned I would be sending a rather long letter to BT's MD and using tin foil to make an adhoc faraday cage to damp the wireless signals. Three hours later the BT AP's disappeared. Looks like I get no free minutes on BT openzone unless I enable FON - not what I signed up for.
Found out port 161 open (to the public internet not just BT techs), not happy about this. Clearly used to take control of the home hub and to switch FON on and off, God knows what else they can do with it . And an internet link capable of 80/20 and an insecure router taken over could be used to launch effective DDOS attacks etc. without the user knowing.
Completely understand that BT have to cater for people like the gormless students in their advertisement but I feel I've been missold. Now don't trust the home hub or BT at all. On the bright side now have a good legal defence against anything nasty appearing on my computer - I can just blame BT techs.
Posting here as a cautionary message for anyone who wants to know the lowdown - BT Infinity high speed but nasty. Next stage for me is to get the Draytek 2950 VDSL modem / router or similar to restore my control over my systems.

Hi All, just wanna have my rant about my BT experience.. having now been a customer for 6 months i still find it amazing that i stiil have glitches.. first of all.. having had the home hub installed for only a week it broke, ????? after numerous calls about this to the international customer services call centre ( how hard is that to talk and explain to these people ffs ) i finally got a replacement ( 2 weeks later i might add despite numerous different people promising it will be here within 2 working days )
after being without BB for that time was i still being billed?? i dont know because as yet i still cant view my online billing despite following the activation instructions on the e mail they sent on installation.
oh and while im at it did i also want the internet security package at the time of signing up for BT.. well of course I did...but alas and yet again after following all the instructions absolutely nothing ????
I would run the PC health check and there it is telling me my PC isnt protected???? again im i be billed for this ??? free for the first 3 months it says??? Norton now installed
so my rant is over.. all i can say is ROLL ON CONTRACT END

Hi, we are a Swiss business hoping to use BC to build our ecommerce site.
One hurdle to us using BC is finding a payment gateway that provides good customer service in Switzerland.
Saferpay provides good customer service in Switzerland, and is listed in BC (with a capital P though, SaferPay).
However, Saferpay themselves say they do not support BC, and will not support any transactions that happen through it. They recommended that we build our new site using one of the solutions on their support page:

We would prefer to use BC.
1. Does anyone have experience using BC with SaferPay/Saferpay?
2. If not, do any Swiss businesses have experience using another BC supported payment gateway?

I don't know of CH sites using any other gateways, apart from that one. But I know that this gorgeus site is using it pretty successfully.

Experience with new microsoft applications

I always seem to have problems when using new Microsoft apps like OneDrive first time. They usually do not work for me the first time even though I follow the instructions. I fine that most of these issues are resolved with account settings,
when they appear to be technical. Example: I couldn't get OneDrive to work. My files were not uploading at all I thought I lost my data. I like to test apps before I adopt them. I tried everything I could think of on my own and a number of solutions
I found on Microsoft.com. In the end it was a logon issue. I had to log off my Microsoft live account log onto a local account and then immediately logout and log back in with my Microsoft live account and it worked. Which makes no sense to me.
I glad but it took me all day to find the solution and it wasn't even technical and it was upsetting. In the end I usually like the things I adopt but I spend so much time trying to figure out solutions that I give up and chose not to try new
technology. Or I go to other vendors who's apps are usually more robust and simple. But I question their security while I trust Microsoft, I would like to able to try Microsoft new apps and technologies without worrying whether it's going to work as
described or is there going to be many hours of tweaking to get it to work.

I'd like to add that this has been my experience with Microsoft ever since the old DOS days prior to Windows 3.1.

Blank page is getting displayed in SAPScript when using NEW-PAGE option.

Hello Experts,
We have created a customized SAPScript and in this separate Script is generated based on the currency(WAERS).
So if we have 3 different currencies, then 3 pages will be created with there details, but we are using NEW-PAGE option in
MAIN window to separate the pages and after 3rd page it is displaying 4th page also with footer details.
So how can we avoid last blank page which is getting displayed?

This issue can be solved by two ways. Please take the one which suits you better.
Solution 1: If you need to generate separate prints for different currencies.
In the driver program, build an internal table for different currencies which needed to be printed. (Using delete adjacent duplicates, build the internal table with exact number of currencies to be printed). Remove the NEW-PAGE option and call the script/form inside the loop. Do the necessary conditions to manipulate the print.
Advantages of above solution: Better control on spools if needed.
Solution 2: Get the count of the number of pages in a variable. Inside the print loop, increment a flag counter. Check it against the variable which contains the number of pages to be printed at the end of each page. Exit the loop when the number of pages to be printed is reached.
Advantage of above solution: Simple to write the program.
