Experienced coder moving to DW: Any tips?

i've been hand-coding HTML and CSS for years now, and I
typically do all of my websites by hand using TextMate for my Mac.
I recently purchased the Web Premium CS3 suite, and I'd really like
to take advantage of what DW has to offer for an experienced web
designer. Any long-time users, especially code monkeys like myself,
who can give me pointers for maximizing my productivity in
Dreamweaver, and also in the Createive Suite? Right now DW is just
a code editor with nice embedded FTP and Preview tools.

I submit this forum's many posts as prima facie testimony
that the acronym
WYSIWYG gives rise to the false belief that what you see *is*
what you get.

  • HT1751 I have moved my library from an external hard drive into my laptop music file but I am not able to open i-tunes when holding down the shift key as advised in step 4 and thus not seeing the library option box - any tips please??

    I have moved my itunes library from old computer to portable hard drive and then on, into new laptop, in music file. However I am then unable to open I-Tunes when holding down the shift button as directed in step 4 - this means I am not seeing the library choice box and cannot synch the tunes into ITunes library - any tips please?........Alan

    Close iTunes. Click the icon to launch iTunes and immediately press and hold down the left shift key. Keep holding until prompted to choose or create a library. If iTunes opens normally, close it,  and try again.

  • How do experienced editors/colorists make video look better? Any tips?

    I am an amateur editor working on a documentary about WW II airplanes.
    The footage was shot on a Cannon HV30 in HDV with the 30p mode. The footage looks great (with some needing color correction), but still looks "videoish" when played on a standard TV.
    I was just curious about what more experienced and artistic editors use to make their material look better.
    I'm not talking about drastic changes like one might make to a dramatic film, but slight stylistic changes/additions to take the edge off of the video.
    For example I've read about adding a very slight channel blur, reducing the contrast a bit, etc.
    Any tips would be appreciated.
    BTW, I've stayed in HDV for the edit and will follow these instructions for finally ending up on a SD DVD: http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/hdv_timeline_to_sddvd.html

    It really depends on the tools that you have. It sounds like your are using a consumer grade camera to shoot a documentary, which makes color grading in post that much more important. Obviously the better the camera and lighting the better your video/film is going to look. Because your working with a HV30 you're going to have to take a few extra steps to make your footage shine in post. I'm not a huge fan of Magic Bullet. If your under a deadline, and you want to impress a client, sweet use it, but if you take pride in your work as a digital artist, and want to understand how color grading works with video I would recommend getting to know these programs: After Effects, Photoshop, Color, and Final Cut Pro. Each of those programs has the following effects/parameters that you can use for color grading: Saturation, Levels, Curves, Contrast/Brightness, and Composite Modes in FCP, PS, and AE. Do not get too comfortable using 3rd party plugins otherwise you'll become dependent on them.
    Peace

  • WL 8.1 SP6 to WL10.3 upgrade any TIPS on "JMS, EJB, Web Service, JDK" etc?

    We are upgrading from BEA Weblogic 8.1 SP6 to Oracle Weblogic 10.3. The application running on WL 8.1 SP6 provides the services like - Web Service consumer, JMS server/consumer, RMI server. The JDK under WL 8.1 being 1.4.
    We have a mix of client application that are essentially JMS clients/senders and RMI clients. These clients will also be upgraded to Oracle Weblogic 10.3 but not at the same time as JMS server/consumer. So some clients may still be running on WL 8.1 JDK 1.4 while the server is running on WL 10.3 (that needs JDK 1.6)
    Please share any TIPs on compatibility issues (and how to overcome) for this mismatch between WL versions as well as JDK.
    Are there any specific details as for as JMS configuration setup from WL 8.1 to WL10.3.
    Appreciate your help!

    Some thoughts:
    * WL 10.3 fully supports 8.1 clients, so you can simply continue to use the 8.1 client jars. The drawback is that the clients won't be able to use new features like unit-of-order, and you may not get some performance benefits of the later clients.
    * I think WL 10.3 clients support the 1.5 and 1.6 JVMs.
    * I think WL 9.2 clients support 1.5 and 1.4 JVMs, so you might consider using 9.x clients during your transition period. This will give you access to more new features without forcing the client to use the 1.5 or 1.6 JVM.
    * As for mix-and-matching of JDK versions, you will need to develop your applications and serializable applications objects so that they continue to use the lowest common denominator. For example, if the same application code must run on 1.4 and a 1.5 client, then don't use generics. Also, avoid using new 1.5 or later JDK classes for serializable objects, if the objects must be passed to older clients (which, of course, will not be able to unmarshal such classes).
    * WL 10.3 and later stand-alone "full clients" can no longer always simply just use the "weblogic.jar". You can only include the weblogic.jar in the client classpath if the jar is embedded with a full weblogic install, otherwise, you must generate a "full client jar" using a command line utility and reference the generated jar instead. See [ Overview of Stand-alone Clients | http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12839_01/web.1111/e13717/basics.htm#i1062773 ].
    * WL 10.3 configuration is quite different than 8.1 configuration. Some things to keep in mind:
    -- You now must also configure "WL Stores" (target to same target as the JMS server that uses the store). For JMS purposes, I recommend configuring a custom store per server and avoiding use of the default store.
    -- You still must configure JMS server(s) (configure each to reference a WL store that has the same target)
    -- You now must configure "JMS Modules", which contains definitions for destinations.
    -- In most cases, best practice is that you should configure one system module per set of JMS servers in a cluster and define a single "subdeployment" target for the module that directly lists each JMS server, target the module itself to a cluster, target destinations within the module to the subdeployment. Avoid "default targeting" for destinations, but its OK for connection factories.
    -- If some destinations are distributed across multiple JMS servers, while others are restricted to a single JMS server, then use two modules each with its own subdeployment. One module for the restricted case that uses regular destinations, and the other for the distributed case.
    Hope this helps,
    Tom

  • Any tips for debugging apply handlers? How to use SYS.AnyData

    Well, I'm setting up my first stream.
    I've set up a simple stream just to understand the concepts, but now I need to start the real work.
    I've written an apply handler that takes the LCR, turns pulls values from the sys.AnyData, and uses them in another statement. I have excerpts from it below-- I've not used a SYS.AnyData before, and I'm not sure if I've set the conversion up correctly:
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE reg_data_handler(in_any IN SYS.AnyData)
    RETURN SYS.AnyData
    IS
         lcr     SYS.LCR$_ROW_RECORD;
         lcr_anydata SYS.AnyData;
         -- Should I declare like this
    -- or should I make it a Number for
    -- the SYS.AnyData conversion?
         -- TYPE is really a NUMBER(11)
    samp_time nh_rlp_stats.sample_time%TYPE;
    BEGIN
    -- Access the LCR
    rc := in_any.GETOBJECT(lcr);
    -- Get the object command type
    command := lcr.GET_COMMAND_TYPE();
    IF command = 'INSERT' THEN
    -- get the needed data
    lcr_anydata := lcr.GET_VALUE('new','SAMPLE_TIME');
    rc := lcr_anydata.get_number(samp_time);
    Does anyone have any tips on how to do the debugging as painlessly as possible? I've tested as much of the individual units as possible, but in order to test the code that pulls from the LCR, it seems like I'll need to hook it into the steam and hope for useful dbms_output statements. Other ideas?
    Thanks very much.
    Robin T

    Actually, I have read the supplied list a couple of times over. There is a difference between reading and doing, particularly as documentation can be mis-interpreted or miss key items. I supplied the code snippets in case some one could see that I was mis-reading the info.
    My particular concern is with debugging: are there any tips people have learnt to make the process easier? If I just hook the handler into a stream and test it that way, I suspect that it might take some time to shake the kinks out. However, it occurred to me this morning that maybe I can fake out the LCR by constructing one of my own in a wrapper procedure and calling the handler within that. So, I'll see if that speeds up the process.
    Thanks very much for your reply.

  • I am trying to install final cut pro 6 onto my mac but a message keeps coming up saying its doesnt support a powerpc, anyone have any tips please?

    I am trying to install final cut pro 6 onto my mac but a message keeps coming up saying its doesnt support a powerpc, anyone have any tips please?

    If you have an Intel Mac and have recently upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion; here is a post I made in another similar thread:
    I do not have any experience with Final Cut, but if you have existing projects that you MUST access; then you are in need of a solution on your new iMac in Mountain Lion!
    Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
    However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
    2.  If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between Final Cut Pro or Lion/Mt. Lion;
    3.  Purchase a used Mac that will run Snow Leopard (with the optional Rosetta installed) and continue to run FCE on that Mac (you can actually use Screen Sharing with a "headless" used Snow Leopard Mac Mini and use the screen from your other Mac to view and work FCP in the Mac Mini environment);
    2.  Upgrade to an Intel compatible version of FCP (such as FCP X) and hope it converts your existing projects to its newer format correctly.  There is much debate that the newer version of Final Cut are eliminating many needed features; for example Final Cut Pro X vs. Final Cut Pro 6 -- many users are staying with version 6;
    3.  Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels and then install FCE in the Snow Leopard environment:
                                  [click on image to enlarge]
    Full Snow Leopard installation instructions here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
    NOTE: STEP ONE of the instructions must currently be completed on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and the resulting modified Snow Leopard.cdr install file can then be moved over to your Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining steps.
    NOTE 2:  Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization.

    I have just got an iPad and I want the music to be transferred through my iPod touch using iCloud but I didn't get the music from iTunes so I don't think it will let me do it. Do you have any tips that could help me?

    Only photos taken with the iPad, copied onto it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad - either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view.
    Photos that were synced from a computer are deleted by moving/removing/de-selecting them from where they were synced from and then re-syncing. If you want to remove them all then normally you could just sync an empty folder (in terms of photos) to the iPad, but as you don't want to sync at the moment you can't do that.
    You can reset the iPad back to factory settings and start from scratch with it : Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content And Settings

  • Can not connect to WiFI with IPAD.  Any tips?

    Any tips on how to connect to WiFi.  The IPAD does not find WiFI.  I know that is working as I currently have 3 other devices using currently.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at
    http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

    Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
    Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
    You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • Internet Slow---Last Resort---Install fresh copy of Tiger---Any tips?

    I have an open topic about my situation where my internet is very slow using safari and firefox. I've done most of the suggestions in that post and now am considering reloading a fresh copy of Tiger.
    When logging into a new, second account, the system seems to be faster than when I log into my usual account, thus this decision.
    I currently have 6mbps download with 640kbps upload speeds and did a test just now and got 5.12mbps and 630kbps. Eventhough this looks very good, the system is slow when using my account.
    I used CCC to backup all my files and would appreciate any tips if I should do anything else prior to installing a clean copy.

    Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
    If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    (You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
    Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
    If your computer is part of a network: please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/bestpractices/#yournetwork and follow the advice given.
    You could also try these codes as well: 4.2.2.1 & 4.2.2.2

    When I create my movie on iMovie it plays great. Then I try to burn it to a dvd and it doesn't play well on the dvd. It either gets stuck at parts or slows down or skips a little. I try to save it to my theatre and burn it that way. Or I have added it to my documents and burned it that way. Either way worked. Any tips, ideas, help or solutions would be very much appreciated. This is driving me crazy and i am wasting so many dvds! Thanks!

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page). Here's a screenshot showing the particular links on the page that you should be clicking:
    After clicking one of the circled links, you should be taken to another page, and after a few seconds you should see a download dialog appear for the msicuu2.exe file. Here's a screenshot of what it looks like for me in Firefox:
    Choose to Save the file. If the dialog box does not appear for you, click the link on the page that says "CLICK HERE IF IT DOES NOT". Here's a screenshot of the page with the relevant link circled:
    When the dialog appears, choose to save the file.
    (2) Go to the Downloads area for your Web browser. Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

    I did switch off and on, did a sync with itunes, etc, but no luck.

    RIM doesn't push the upgrades -- your service provider does so, once they have certified and approved the operating system upgrade for their devices.
    But, .973 does work on the 9520 in the manner you wish it would, I've used it myself on that model.

  • Need an experienced coder to write iPhone app locally-KC

    I am looking for an experienced coder to write an iPhone app. here in K.C. MO. I am starting to think that they don't exist. Extremely hard to find. Are most of you developers in business for yourself or working for a company? Just wondering. And you KC peeps-post back and we'll talk.

    I really have mixed feelings about your post here.
    On one hand, I think it violates the spirit, if not the letter, of the Apple Discussions Terms of Use. I thought about reporting it, but didn't. Then I thought about posting a clarification question on the Feedback forum, but didn't.
    It is definitely a grey area. There are lots of new iPhone programmers here and they may need work. If people start posting job ads here that means that people are noticing and are coming to Apple to recruit programmers. Programmers coming here looking for a job ad might also contribute questions and/or answers.
    How come Apple's most frivolous device is also the most profitable and the only one to ever get any corporate attention and respect? But I digress.
    I do not think this is good venue for finding a programmer in Kansas City. I know of at least 2 large universities in the area with any number of computer science students who would be thrilled to get some iPhone experience. Get in contact with the career development offices of those universities. If you want someone experienced, they are more likely to be older and more likely to read the local paper. <hint, hint> If you want an experienced iPhone programmer, that will be easier still. Put an ad in SF, BOS, NYC, or Denver Craigslist and offer $250K and a free house. You think I'm joking
    Oh, and by the way, sometimes I troll SF, BOS, NYC, and Denver Craigslist and flag any non-local jobs as "miscategoried"
