Experiences with skype and Flash Player 9 ?

Hello World,
I found arch a couple of days ago, and will install soon.
I wonder whether any of you are running current versions of (a) skype and (b) the flashplayer 9 plugin for  Firefox.  Both are subject to well-known but mysterious problems, apparently striking at random, and unfortunately both affect my current Slackware system.
The skype issue is that only root can connect :
http://forum.skype.com/index.php?s=599b … 57736&st=0
The Flash issue is that the new plugin regularly crashes some browsers, see various posts on :
http://blogs.adobe.com/penguin.swf/
It would be nice to know that arch users have not encountered these annoyances.
In case anyone is interested in the background of new users, I have been full time on linux for about 8 years.  I began with SuSE (it was cheaper than RedHat and there was an excellent printed manual).  I moved to Linux From Scratch (wonderful, but I could not face another installation session).  Then to Slackware (where I have been very happy, but I am open to the idea of a change).  I tend to keep distros for a long time, manually updating as I go.  I have run vanilla kernels since the 2.4 development began and (purely out of interest), I compile most of my own libraries and applications.

Many thanks to both sessy and ise. The two bugs I mention really are a pain - especially the Flash 9 one.  The developers can't reproduce it on their Gentoo boxes - ise does not have it - yet many people seem to suffer.  I am beginning to wonder if it is a hardware thing ... maybe Flash 9 is very demanding.  This box is 2 x 1gz PIII smp - which is becoming rather old now.

  • ISight not working with Apple apps but only with Skype and flash....

Hi guys, don't know why but suddenly my isight stopped working with every apple application, like ichat, imovie and photoboot, but it still works with skype and safari (flash).
The camera simply doesn't work, the green led stays off.... I tried resetting PRAM, SMC, deleted .plist files, tried new account and everything...
Maybe the problem is facetime, I uninstalled it by simply dragging it to the trashcan, so I followed a thread here and manually deleted its last files but no luck....
Please guys help me, I really hope I don't have to FORMAT my mac... sounds so windows to me XD...

Thanks for the "helpful" star, V4N0!

  • Problem with Safari and Flash Player

Hi, I've done a quick search and can't find an answer, however since updating from Lion to Mountain Lion I've had problems with my (2011) Macbook Pro whilst in Safari, following a Genuis bar visit last week we managed to narrow it down to a flash player problem and uninstalled and reinstalled flash was told that should the problems persist (we couldn't get the computer to repeat it's beahviour in store) then to re-install OSX, now I've done this but still getting the same problem, screen not refreashing so parts of previous page or pop still showing over top of new page and Computer getting VERY hot (to the point of almost burning. Now I've had a look on Adobe website and they recommend running 10.3 rather than 11.4 and I managed to download it from them however Safari blocks it as it's out of date, also on my iMac running Mountain Lion Flash appears to be blocking internet access, internet fails when attempting to use a website that needs flash, but works fine when not using it.  Anyone got any ideas on a work around?

    Try this...
    Quit Safari.
Open System Preferences > Flash Player then select the Advanced tab. Click: Delete All
    Relaunch Safari.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Reset Safari
Select:  Clear History  (also empties the cache)
Deselect the remaining boxes then click Reset.
Quit and relaunch Safari. Try a Flash based video.

  • STILL no real answer to problems with QuickTime and Flash Player

The reply to Problems with QuickTime really didn't answer or solve the basic problem. Some sites to work at all require you to have working Flash Player 8 so when I try to use these sites I get the QuickTime logo with a question mark and then nothing. For all you experts on Apple and Mac; what is going on? Apple is the parent of QuickTime and I assume they want their customers happy with their work. So why is it so hard for these apparently small updates to their programs causing entire sites being blocked off? I have OS x 10.3.9 on a G4 iMac 855mHrz .... It seems that even though we, the customer by default become Apples program testers;the actual programers are never given the go ahead to actualy look at these problem posts. Has anyone ever gotten a solution for a problem they posted here from one of the programmers of the product? It would be nice to know we aren't left to our own devices when it comes to program gliches from the source. If the powers that be in apple are watching and willing to help; any time now is a good time to just but in on the conversation and help solve some of the problems us little people keep on running into.--------------
While online I run into sites that will NOT work without Flash Player 8 (which costs over $150.00) which is told to the viewer with a QuickTime logo with a question mark in it.
This leads the web surfer to try to upgrade or at least investigate Flash Player in their computer and it's version. When said web surfer looks at Flash player upgrade for bucks and the fact that in some way it is tied to QuickTime, web surfer gets real curious. Do the web masters for those sites know that their site is now blocked off? If any major portion ( say 30 or 40 % ) of the web surfing crowd is required to purchase an upgrade to Flash Player even though it doesn't look like Apple is the parent of said Flash Player; those web masters are going to be upset with Apple. Their income is tied to actuall access and browsing of a site, even if it is only to actually just get the Home page. With no access to the site due to no Flash Player 8, the web master is going to find those all important Hits going down to nil. -------
This post is way to broad for any one answer so I don't really expect one. But for you people who have run into similar problems with other programs and sites; I would love to hear if you got any help from other web surfers or from the parent people of those programs and/or sites. I know that my isp earthlink has helped out with problems faster than other groups involved. Anyway.. Any help or comment on this post ( or gripe if you prefer ) would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Sorry, but you are completely misinformed. Flash Player 8 doesn't cost one red cent; it's only the Flash creation package that you have to pay for. You can download the free Flash Player 8 here.
QuickTime can natively handle some Flash content, which is why with the lack of the Flash player the browser defaults to the QT plugin. But Flash 8 is a relatively new format from Macromedia and I'm not sure QT supports it yet. Install the Flash 8 player and things should work just fine.
And just FYI, for questions about the Mac version of QuickTime, you'll be better off asking them in the QuickTime for Mac forum.

  • Issue with Youtube and Flash Player, videos don't play after a while

When I go to Youtube I can watch videos, but after I've player 5 or 6, when I select the next one, I get a snowy screen with a message "The Adobe Flash Player is required for video playback. Get the latest Flash Player".  Issues is I already have the latest Flash Player, and it was playing fine just a minute ago. But from then on I cannot play more videos until I restart the computer. I'm tired of reinstalling Flash every day.
Win 7 64 bits, IE 9 and Firefox (happens with both)
    Flash Player 11.7.700.202
Apparently the browser at first recognizes that Flash is installed, but then it doesn't find it anymore. Not sure how that happens.

strangest thing...  a few 'non-youtube' sites still work ok, but still complain 'no javascript' ..
    so went to firefox (v17.0.4 ESR) 'tools, options, content' and yup,  javascript UNTICKED!!   :O :O  my bad memory? something else???  {shrugs}
ticked it, now ok........  think im getting old??????  ROFL..

  • Problems with IE9 and Flash Player when Offline

I can't get embeded flash to work in IE9 with Windows 7 when offline (works fine online) but it works fine with Google Chrome. I am saving the webpage with embeded flash as html.

I was having the same problem using Internet Explorer—this is how I solved it. This worked for me—it may not work for you.
First go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ and install Adobe Flash Player for your computer.
    Click to open Internet Explorer.
Click the Tools button , and then click Manage add-ons.
Under Add-on Types, click Toolbars and Extensions.
Under Show, To display a complete list of the add-ons on your computer, click “All add-ons” on the left bottom under “Show”.
Under “Name” go to “Adobe Systems Incorporation” select “Shockwave Flash Object” right click on “Disabled” and click on “Enabled”
Also make sure “Shockwave ActiveX” is also “Enabled:
    When you're finished, click Close.

  • Issues with Opera and Flash Player

    Hi everybody!
I just installed Arch Linux some days ago on my SSD drive and I have to say I'm loving it!
However, I'm having troubles with flashplayer on Opera. I installed both the browser and the plugin from the official repository.
The plugin is correctly recognized by opera and listed in opera:plugins but whenever I visit a page which requires it, all I can see is a black rectangle instead of the video.
In the wiki there are some suggestions on how to optimize the plugin; I tried those but they didn't work.
On firefox everything works fine, but I'd prefer to stay on Opera.
I also tried with gnash-gtk but also that doesn't work on opera
As suggested on a post on the opera website I also checked the dependencies of the flash player, but all the required shared libraries are present on the system.
I don't know what else to do. Any ideas?

  • So what's the latest with Java and Flash Player?

...And excuse me for not distingwishing between them, but what I do know, is that Flash Player version 10,1,102,64 that was mentioned here as the one for Tiger 10.4.11 on PPC machines -- is no longer appearing on the list at the Adobe's site.
I also do know that I'm having some issues with other programs that require FP and/or Java...

    *Flash Player for PPC Macs*
Adobe's last release of Flash Player for PPC Macs was in November, 2010 with release 10.1.102.64 Subsequent releases are for Intel based Macs only.
To check your installed version of FlashPlayer - http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about
    To update you should download:
Flash uninstaller: [http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/865/cpsid_86551.html#prob1=uninst,os=m10.6,] Make sure you get the right one.
Flash installer 10.1.102.64 [http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/installers/archive/fp_10.1.102. 64_and_9.0.289.0_archive.zip]  Open the archive to reveal yet more archives and multiple files. Select: flashplayer10_1r102_64_ub_mac.dmg
    To install:
    1) Run Disk Utility and verify your hard drive.  If the hard drive reports errors then it will need repairing first (another topic).  If it verifies, run Disk Utility's repair permissions.
    2) Back up your hard drive, ideally to a bootable clone. A bootable clone will allow you to restore your hard drive to its original state should something go wrong.
    3) Quit all applications to ensure nothing is actively using Flash. You can even do the next step while booted to Safe Mode to make sure.
[Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393]
[What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? (Mac OS X)|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564]
[Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107394]
    4) Run the uninstaller application. Adobe says, "Adobe recommends that you restart your computer before you install a different version of the player."
    5) Run the installer application from the .dmg file you got from the second download.
    6) Use Disk Utility to repair permissions on your computer. This is important when installing anything from Adobe.
    7) Restart your computer.
    Notes:
Adobe installs things all over your computer. Simply dragging a file or two to the trash won't ensure you have uninstalled all old file components.

  • High CPU Problems With Screensavers and Flash Player - FYI

Upgraded my 1.42 Ghz PPC MacMini (1 GB RAM) to Leopard, fresh install and suffered high CPU problems as outlined in various other threads.
Fixed major 100% cpu and 100% FAN issue by removing The Weather Channel Screensaver - so have a look at your console system info and see if a 3rd Party screensaver is causing a problem, or if no 3rd party screensaver, try using a simply screensaver like Forest.
Safari/Netscape/Firefox also were using high CPU when a webpage was using Flash, I removed Flash Player 9 (latest version) and cpu load decreased dramatically.
    Go here for uninstall DMG
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157
Hope this helps someone else until there are fixes.

Just wanted to clarify that the Flash and Screensaver problem is still ongoing even after the latest QT updates as of Nov 07.
The Flash problems is with Flash images/code that use moving graphics/user input, such as those adverts you see where you push a button to punch Paris Hilton.
I think the overall problem is with the way QT/Core Image/Core Animation is different in Leopard compared to Tiger. As have now often witnessed iTunes just displaying the Cover Flow image area and nothing else (everything else in the application area is white) when going between applications, clicking on the iTunes icon in the dock refreshes the image okay.

Whenever I try to play a flash file the quicktime symbol comes up and has a questionmark in the middle. I have already tried uninstalling Quicktime and reinstalling it and it didn't work... I even got it to work by changing the prefrences but then it stopped working again. this all started when I downloaded the latest version of quicktime. is there a way to stop quicktime from playing flash files at all?

is there a way to stop quicktime from playing flash files at all?
QuickTime preferences -> File types -> Miscellaneous. Uncheck the setting for Flash Media.
(note: the exact location of this setting may be different depending on the version of QT you have; the above is valid for QT7. So you may have to hunt about a bit in the preferences if you have an earlier version of QT).

I have Windows 8.1, my adobe player is the most updated version also.... hope this helps

Yeah, Firefox and Flash Player isn't a super stable combination on Windows 8.1 at the moment.  We're collaborating closely with Mozilla to improve that, but that effort is going to happen over several months.
In the meantime, you might want to take a look at the other options.  Microsoft invested a lot of time and effort into making the Flash experience on Win8.1 really good in IE, as did Google with Chrome.

  • Getting Big Headache, What is difference between Flash Lite 3.1 and Flash Player 7

Hello, I am asking questions about the two similar yet different programs for Pocket PC version only:
    1) Which came first, Flash Lite 3.1 or Flash Player 7?
    2) If I have both in my Pocket PC, will there be product incompatibility?
    3) What is the difference between Flash Lite 3.1 and Flash Player 7.
    4) I have a Flash Lite 3.1 but uninstall information says "Flash Lite 3.1 for Opera Mobile", did you releaase this? Is this an illegal copy? A developer's copy?
*I don't know exactly where I got it, but I got it from the HTC developer's forum: XDA-developers.com
*I also use Opera mobile, a web browser for Pocket PC's.
    5) What is difference between Flash Lite 3.1 and Flash Lite 3.1 for Opera? Is the only difference is that Flash Lite Supports everything flash related, while Flash Lite Opera supports only flash in opera?
Hi, I don't expect all answers, but I hope someone or someone from adobe support can clear some things up for me.

The program under my "remove programs" list is specifically called "Adobe Flash Lite for Opera". The XDA forums people said along time ago that it was Flash Lite, and kept calling it Flash Lite, and not Flash Player 7.
    Now what about this:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/flashlite/version/
The table shows the differences between FP 7 SDK, FL 2.1, and FL 3.1. And it's quite obvious that FL 3.1 has way more features than Flash Player 7. What does SDK mean? And why are you telling me FP 7 has more features?
With this information, can you or anyone else provide any more details and clarification?
