Experiencing HDTV on my Powerbook

I was unsure where to post this query, so I thought here might suit.
I have the PB described below, and an HD Ready Samsung LCD TV.
Can I connect the Powerbook to the TV and experience true HDTV?
If so, how would I do it? With the VGA port?
Any where would I obtain demonstrative HD material?
Someone suggested I might be able to get a DVI-HDMI converter and do it that way.
Any ideas?

It all depends on what type of connection your television has. Your powerbook has DVI directly out of it, and from what I remember, most Samsung LCDs have DVI input jacks. If that is the case, then a DVI cable is all you would need. If your television has HDMI, you would need a DVI to HDMI cable. VGA would not give you a digital HD signal, as VGA is an analog connection. VGA would still be able to display HD, but would require the use of your powerbooks digital to analog convertors which could make the HD less pristine. All of these cables are available at your local electronics stores, with DVI being priced around $80, DVI to HDMI at $100 and VGA by far the chaepest and at a wide range of prices. However, if you wish to save somee money, you can purchase these cables online at a place such as Markertek and save yourself quite a bit of money. Once you get it connected, it may take a little bit of fiddling to get the best and highest resolution your tv can handle. Once you're all set and connected, you can download some HD content from the Quicktime website. Just so you know, a powerbook cannot very adequately handle the very upper echelons of HD, exhibited in 1080i resolution. But it can display 720p material pretty well.

I can feel static discharge.....

Hi all,
I'm wondering if any of you guys and girls experience what I'm experiencing?
Whenever I hook my Powerbook up to the powerpoint, I can feel static discharge when I run my palm over the powerbook casing. It can be painful sometimes.
Is this something to worry about? Will the laptop be compromised because of this?

Static electricity is discharged in a 'crack' or pin-***** event - very fast and often very sore. If this is a more or less constant faint tingling then it isn't static electricity - it is a small level of leakage current. It can be caused by a voltage difference between your data projector ground and the Powerbook's ground (although some users have experienced it through the Powerbook's case in other uses).
Try using your Powerbook with the extension lead connected to your power block - it has an earth in the plug and so will give the case a solid connection path to earth which should remove any ground voltage.
This is not dangerous, of course it is uncomfortable but the energy levels here are very small so don't worry about being electrocuted or your Powerbook being damaged.

2007 security update can't connect with wifi after sleep

After applying the 2007-001 security update I could no longer get to the any web pages even though internet connect showed I had a good connection. After checking my network settings I noticed that my Power book had a self applied IP address. I deleted the internet .plist files in my user/library/preferences folder and rebooted. Then my network settings showed a valid ip address. After putting the Power book to sleep for a while. I had to go through the whole routine again. Has anyone found a fix for this?

Albeit this is a late reply, I have found that if I disconnect from
the net via the Airport symbol on the Finder's task bar that, works for me.
It is odd since this issue is most prevalent with 10.4.8 & intel in particular.
However I have experienced it on my powerbook running 10.4.8.
My Flat panel runs os 10.3.9 but is connected via ethernet & that does not have this issue.
Make sure your Router/Modem is updated on it's firmware.
I don't know how you connect, however try DNS Server #'s if you do not have those entered in your, DNS server field, TCP/IP tab, Network, In System pref.
Look for your ISP's server # here
FYI, for many ppl.in the States, the Verizon numbers work well.

Caps lock light not working, can't tell if it was after upgrade or just use

Has anybody else experienced this?: My Powerbook G4's caps lock light doesn't lit anymore.
Was it because of the ugprade from Tiger 10.4.10 to Leopard 10.5.0?

Airport Icon Slow to Respond

Hi guys,
When I click on my Airport icon on my menu it's very slow to respond and the drop down menu doesn't appear instantly like it does with the volume or the clock icons.
Yesterday I clicked on it and my SystemUIServer crashed and I had to do a hard restart as the computer hung at shut down.
Anyone know what's causing this programme? I do not have any 3rd party applications installed in my menu bar, well, apart from the Adium duck, but Adium wasn't running at the time.

I have the same problem (slow response from AirPort icon), as well as the time it takes to reconnect to the AP after resuming from sleep.
Both are much slower than what is experienced with my two PowerBooks.
I do not have any errors in any log files around the time these problems are experienced, though.that time frame, though.
This has been a problem since day one with the default install, and all patches (except the latest AirPort Base Station Update 2007-002 (5.2.1) and MBP Software Update (1.1). Am worried that applying these is going to create problems (based on what others have posted on the forums).

HDTV with Elgato's eyetv hybrid on my Powerbook G4: it does work!?

I recently acquired Elgato's eyetb Hybrid. I was advised that because I only have a G4 chip running in my Powerbook, it would not work in HDTV mode. Well, it does work in HDTV, and its great. So, what's the deal: is it working fully? At a lower resolution? Do I have a special Powerbook? Any ideas?

To play full resolution HDTV, you need any Core Duo Mac, a Core 2 Duo Mac, or a Dual G5. A slower Mac will play the recording, but scaled down from HDTV resolution to 1/4 resolution (similar to DVD quality). (That's from their website)

Powerbook to HDTV. Need cable help.

I'm looking to hook up my early model Powerbook 12 (the one with the the 867mhz processor) to my Sony Bravia hdtv.
Half an hour of googling has yielded this: my powerbook outputs video using some archaic **** called mini vga and there is no easy way of connecting that to a hdtv. So I was hoping some of the kind denizens of the fb forums could help me out and tell me what cables I need to get.
I also read that I would need to get audio to the tv using a separate wire. Is this as simple as hooking up an audio cable from the laptop to the tv or am I missing something?

But what kind of quality can expect from this sort of setup. I know I'm not going to get anywhere near HD, but will i at least get reasonable picture clarity?

Conect my PowerBook G4 17" to my HDTV

How can I connect my PowerBook G4 17" to my HDTV to watch DVDs? And once it is connected do i need to do anything to enable the picture to start?

You can connect using a VGA standard cable (previous hour HDTV has such a connection) or through a S-Video cable. VGA works perfectly with my Powerbook 17 connected to a Samsung Lcd screen 46" (wow)
Then you manage your TV from desktop of your laptop as a 2nd screen.
Some other adapters, such Scart-VGA, or video composite are also available,
but why spend extra money?

IMac to HDTV - experiencing a problem

I have just connected my iMac to a 1080p HD TV via the Apple 'mini DVI to VGA' adapter and 5 metre VGA extension cable. In some ways the picture is surprisingly good (it is higher definition than SD or DVD) but there is visible ghosting on the TV picture. I thought ghosting was due to a weak signal or interference and only affected the old style analogue TV signal.
Does anybody know why I might be experiencing this problem? I don't know too much about this sort of thing but could the length of the VGA extension cable (5 metre) be a cause? Could it be interference from the other cables and media devices plugged into the TV? Or should I be using the more convoluted miniDVI > DVI and then a DVI > HDMI?
Any help much appreciated.

If you have an iMac G5 it has a mini-VGA output not mini-DVI.
If you are using a mini-DVI converter, you have an Intel-based iMac not an iMac G5.

Mini DVI to VGA issues w/ LCD HDTV

I have looked all over and I can't find a solution.
I recently purchased an LCD HDTV, Insignia Brand which is a Best Buy Brand, and I bought a DVI cable to hook up to my Powerbook G4 using the Mini DVI to VGA cable. When I hook it up to my tv it works, but the screen on my Powerbook looks magnified as does the LCD TV. When I launch Safari or any other program it doesn't fit on my screen or the LCD TV and I have to resize it.
After I look at displays in system prefernces it says my max resolution is 1024 x 768.
Any help would be appreciated.

Just guessing - the TV's "VGA" input is limited to 1024x768, which is possible although some "VGA" inputs will work higher. Do the instructions mention a limitation like this?
I think if you turn off mirroring on the Powerbook, at least the Powerbook screen will have normal resolution, and the TV 1024x768. The TV apparently scales up image to fill the screen unless using HDMI, where is leaves the extra 342 pixels blank on the sides (1366-1024). Perhaps the TV has a mode for adjusting how the TV handles lesser resolutions (stretch, dot-by-dot, etc)

Why won't my mini dp to hdmi adapter work with my hdtv?

I recently bought a 2011 Macbook Pro 13" notebook, and the girl who sold it to me also sold me the Moshi mini display-port to HDMI adapter. She said all I would need to hook my laptop up to my Vizio LCD hdtv was that adapter and a regular HDMI cable. So I've now tried to hook them up no less than 10 times, and nothing still. The only thing that happens is, my laptop screen will turn blue and adjust the screen size as if it's trying to adjust to the TV, and my TV will say "retrieving data." So it looks like it's getting ready to connect, and then my computer screen will go back to normal, and my TV will then say either "not support" (whatever that means) or "no signal." Now I know there is nothing wrong with my macbook, since I have been able to hook it up to the TV with my friend's adapter. I thought she had the same adapter as me, but now that I really look at it, I think it's a display-port to VGA adapter. Plus the cable she uses is something other than an HDMI cable. Does anyone know why my adapter isn't working? Or is it possible that it's just faulty and I wasted my money? (Note: I've tried adjusting the resolution, display, etc, and nothing makes a difference).

I too experienced the same issue. Here are my details:
Recently I bought a 15” Macbook Pro and last night I tried to connect and use a Edirol FA/66 Firewire 400 connected outboard audio interface using a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter then connected to a Firewire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter since the MBP doesn’t have a native Firewire port. What I observed is that the Edirol was not getting power from the bus nor did the MBP (running Yosemite) recognize the Edriol. At first I thought there was a problem with the Edirol since I haven’t used it in a while but when I connected it to an older MBP that has a native Firewire port, it worked normally. Is there a known issue with these sorts of external audio interfaces working properly with newer MBP running Yosemite? I’m hoping that a software update will fix this issue.

DVI to ADC adapter forcing powerbook to shut down on connection

Hi there,
I have been using my powerbook 1.25GHz for about 8 months with my DVI to ADC adapter to connect to my 22" cinema display with no troubles whatsoever. Yesterday evening when I came home as soon as connected the adapter to my powerbook- it shut down my powerbook within a couple of seconds. Not only that I was blasted with a 3-5 second low tone from my powerbook as it attempted to restart. At the same time the sleep light (one that purrs softly in sleep mode on the powerbook) flashed in quick succession for the length of time that my powerbook made the the long beep noise.
Following this the computer then makes the usual start up noise but nothing happens on either my powerbook display or the 22" display. I am then required to take out the adapter connection from my powerbook and my computer restarts normally after holding down the start button again.
I have tried a few times now to connect the adapter with the same problem. Has anyone else experienced this or have any idea what the sound being emitted is all about and the disco light display from my powerbook?

1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 Powerbook Mac OS X (10.3.9)

The exact same things (low tone, furiously flashing sleep light) has happened to me on several occasions, and it happened again today. I just googled up the symptoms and this is where I landed. The only thing I can correlate among our experiences is that the DVI connection on the powerbook is involved (the problem may or may not have anything to do with the ADC adapter).
For my problem, it's usually occurred after I've either just connected or disconnected a second display using an Apple dvi-->adc powered adapter or a small unpowered dongle (dvi -->vga) for an lcd projector. The restart after either one fails can take quite awhile.
Twice in the past six months, I've been at the "two minute warning" before a presentation, and the book has crapped out just as I connect it to the projector and then it's gone into the psycho light and sound mode you described. Today's failure occurred after unhooking from the powered Apple DVI-->ADC adapter at my desk to go down the hall for a meeting. The computer went into blue screen and stayed there after it was disconnected from the Studio Display and DVI-->ADC adapter. Attempting to hard reset/powerdown by holding down the power button initiated the tone/light flashing.
These few cases may seem pretty isolated, but perhaps a pattern will emerge if people keep adding their experiences.

Connect Macbook to Sony Bravia HDTV via HDMI?

I am trying to connect my Macbook to a Sony Bravia HDTV via HDMI, but are unable to get one to recognize the other. I am not sure what the problem is.
I have the following set up:
- Macbook 13" (2.16 GHz Intel Core 2, 10.4.11)
- Apple Mini DVI to DVI adopter
- 15' DVI to HDMI cable (from monoprice.com, same cable recommended elsewhere in these forums)
- Sony Bravia KDL46W3000, (Full HD 1920 x 1080 p)
The Sony tv does not seem to recognise the Mac is connected (and/or vise versa). The screen is just black. Yes, I have tried all 3 of the HDMI inputs on it, Yes, I have set the tv input setting to match the corresponding input jack. HDMI does work on the tv though, as I have a DVD player connected via HDMI and that works fine.
The Mac Display preference pane does not detect the tv/monitor being connected. I normally use another external LCD monitor with the Macbook via mini DVI to VGA adaptor without any problem. I have tried various solutions others have mentioned for similar problems I found in these forms, such as turning the tv off then on, rebooting the Macbook before connecting, etc. and every other combination.
An hour on the phone with Sony tech support did not get me anywhere closer other than they say the Mac should recognize the tv as an external monitor.
Has anyone with a very similar configuration managed to get this to work? Please note, I am well aware that many many people use HDTV's as a external monitor, but this is a Sony Bravia, not a LG, or Samsung, or anything else. Also, it is a Macbook, not a Powerbook or anything else. Also, I am trying to connect via HDMI, and not VGA.

I hooked my Sony .Bravia 40" up to my MacBook with no problem. From your description, it sounds like you may also have a bad DVI->HDMI cable. I'm using the stock Apple miniDVI adaptor mated to my DVI->HDMI cable.
I was going to go the route you took and use the VGA port on my Bravia, but thought it might limit me to "side" letterboxes since I thought VGA basically stood for 640x480 or 4X3 format. I'm surprised that you get 1920x1080 from a VGA cable. While your picture may be great, by definition I understand high to low video quality in order is...
HDMI/DVI, Component, s-video, VGA, and lastly, A/V cables.
My DVI->HDMI cable is a cheapie that I think I bought at Frys. This type of cable is probably getting harder to find as most stuff is straight HDMI now. Anyone thinking of getting a new flat screen should strongly remember to get one with at least 3 HDMI ports unless they are into cable switch-a-roo when connecting various devices. The stock devices today are cable/satellite, Blu-Ray/HD-DVD/DVD and one for the old Mac.

G4 Mac Mini with Toshiba CRT HDTV

Hello all. I'm trying to hook up my Mac Mini (original G4 model) to my Toshiba HDTV (30HF85) using a Dvi to HDMI cable (DVI-D; a basic cable purchased from amazon). Unfortunately, I'm not getting any picture at all - just a black screen. I'm sure that neither the cable nor the hdmi port are faulty; I ran another mac (2005-6 G4 Powerbook) through the cable to the TV, and got a very clear picture. Likewise, the mac mini is still in working order, and connects with no problem to an any VGA monitor via the included DVI-VGA adapter. I have a suspicion that it has to do with the cable I purchased - it's Dual link. I've read in some places that this shouldn't matter, but in others, that this is a problem for older mac minis. Any ideas about what's going on here?

Since you have two Macs, I recommend you try the following:
• Hook up the G4 PowerBook to the TV and open Displays preferences on the PB and make note of the resolution in use that is giving a very clear picture.
• Enable screen sharing on the mini (using a computer monitor if you have to)
• With the mini connected to the TV, share its screen to the PB and from the PB you should be able to set the mini to the exact same setting that is working so well from the PB.
About your dual-link question, I doubt that's the problem. HDMI to dual-link doesn't even make sense because and HDMI connector doesn't have enough pins to hook up to a dual-link DVI connector.
