Experiencing increased channel noise levels on PXIe4497 with 1071 fan on HIGH

I am using a PXIe-4497 to collect microphone data and when I switch the PXI chassis 1071e fan to HIGH setting, the noise level increases.  The chassis is outside of an isolated test chamber, so the noise isn't occuring acoustically.  Please see the FFT plot below of fan on AUTO (white trace) and fan on HIGH (red trace).  Has anyone had this issue?
Attachments:
Background Measurement with PXI1071 fan on AUTO and HIGH.PNG ‏89 KB

There was some noise getting the pass through into the chamber.  We added more sound insulation to block it out.  Here's what it looks like with the added insulation (FAn on HIGH, white trace is with added insulation):
But as you can see there are ~256Hz harmonics.  The data below is for MIC Y which is last channel the PXI-4492 (first module).  The difference between AUTO and HIGH settings is now:
Here is MIC Z which is first channel input on the next module PXI-4497:
Auto and HIGH fan settings are close to being similar for MIC Z>  Here are MICs X (white), Y(red), and Z (green) plotted together with fan on HIGH...X and Y are on PXI-4492 (last two inputs) and Z is on PXI-4497:
As you can see MIC Z doesn't have the 256Hz harmonics.  We swapped the Z with the Y channels to see if it was MIC or channel related.  Below is MIC Z in last input channel of PXI-4492 (where MIC Y was originally):
The noise follows the input channel, not the MIC.  Here is the other side of the swap...MIC Y in first input channel of PXI-4497:
No significant change now between Auto and HIGH fan settings.
This seems to be input module related....
What now?

  • Newbie having problems with noisy fan and high CPU usage in Activity Monitor

I am new to the world of Apple and have got my hands on a hand-me-down PowerBook G4 version 10.4.11. It works fairly well for everything but the Internet.
One of the first symptoms i noticed was that watching stuff on youtube was slow and jumped a lot. I checked a few things out and looked the CPU usage in activity monitor and this was about 80% to 100% when on youtube or even moving from page to page. I'e tried loads of stuff including repairing disk permissions, emptying caches and relaunching finder when the preferences file is on the desktop (not really sure what that was supposed to do).
The next thing I discovered was that if i disconnected the laptop from the mains and played youtube and some other applications the whole thing would go into sleep mode very quickly. I have got temperature monitor downloaded now although I already know it is getting very hot.
PS when it heats up the fan turns on because I can hear a whirring sound...
Would really appreciate some insight into this as it seems to be a good runner otherwise.
PS2 I have loads of free space left in the disk usage tab in activity monitor.
    Big thank you in advance

Virtually no G4s are dealing well with web video anymore. The video technology used by modern developers puts a huge strain on a G4 processor. As this a choice made by coders, there is not much you can do about it. Some people suggest adding RAM but the effect is marginal considering it's the processor that's taxed.
Notebooks get hot. The fans in my 1Ghz 17-inch PowerBook from 2003 kick in between 130 and 140°F. The danger point is not until in the vicinity of 100F so don't sweat it to much. Make sure you do not cover the case bottom by setting the computer on a thick cloth placemat, pillow or other bedding item, or on your lap without a lapboard. The bootom of the case is part of the heat dissipation system and needs air under it to work
A lot of PowerBooks have, by now, lost some or all of their "feet" that gve a little space under the case. Don't bother looking for official replacements--get the silicone door/drawer bumpers from the hardware store that stick on. I found some about 3/16" thick that let more air under my PB thatn the mostly missing originals.
The next thing I discovered was that if i disconnected the laptop from the mains and played youtube and some other applications the whole thing would go into sleep mode very quickly
Your battery is likely dead from old age. Batteries only last about 2-3 years. You are seeing a sign of the battery lacking sufficient remaining capacity to run the computer. Get this utility:

  • Excessive Noise Levels

Hi, i'm getting a High Noise Level issue with a Linksys WRT54GL and with a high gain antenna LIN HGA7T. The problem is that at the WRT54GL location there're some neighbour antennas that at certain times off the day seems to be transmiting signals that increase the Noise Level seen by the wireless cards. So from the pc connected via wireless we're having ping responses to the AP for about 700 - 900 ms and sometimes (almost one time a day) it drops the pc from the wireless and it`s really hard to get connected again. When the signal stops, we recover normal noise levels and the ping response is at 1ms without any troubles. We're using WUSB54Gc cards. The question is, if i add another AP could i override the noise level? This would increase the signal strength in order to avoid the disconnection and the bad response times? Which AP should i use to this purpose? Is there any othe solution? Thanks a lot for your help.

Your best solution to this problem will probably be to simply change your router's channel  (see more channel info below).  However, I have included my full set of wireless connection tips:
There are many causes for poor wireless connections, and many solutions:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. If your current network is not listed, enter its info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
For wireless g routers, try setting the "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps. For wireless n routers, try setting the "n Transmission Rate" to 162 Mbps, and the (wireless g) "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
If you still have trouble, download and install the latest firmware for your router. After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
    Hope this helps.

  • S10 noise level too high when closed

    HI,
I just unpacked a new S10 6423 47G. I was startled by the noise level from the start and now that after completion of the windows setup the noise level has not gone down(I has hoping for a fan control issue), I have stopped further installation and am wondering what to do next.
The three fans seem ok and fairly quiet, I think the installation of the hard drive is also nicely solved.
When the unit is open the noise level is nothing great but ok. As soon as I put the side panel on, I have an increase in noise level that brings me over the tolerance treshold.
I am not sure about the reason, the panel is quite loose but when I press on certain or all parts there is no change in sound. It seems there is resonance in the entire case when I install the side panel. It starts even when the panel is not completey vertfical. In addition to the general noise level there also seems to be resonance of other frequencies as from time to time there is a humming with a frequency of a few changes a minute.
I am really disappointed, the "quiet like whipser noise level" (or so the ad went) was the thing that made me buy this computer without thinking much either about specs or price, I just wanted a reasonably quiet computer.
    Any advice?
    ThanksM.

    Dear Brian,
thanks a lot for your info. I am relieved to see that the noise level is acceptable with your machine. That gives me hope.
FYI, I contacted Lenovo Germany and they were polite but not too helpful, they said that naturally this computer should be louder than a normal pc and did not want to hear much about the way the system is advertised as ultra-quiet. I do not believe in advertising promises but a moderately decent noise level i do expect.
I will return this unit to the dealer and order a new one - hoping that this is only a singular experience.
For me  it is not an option to be unhappy with Lenovo - I like the Think series a lot and buy their notebooks all the time for business..

  • After downloading Lion the noise level of the fans increased. A noise which did not exist with Snow Leopard. Any ideas how to reduce noise?

After downloading Lion the noise level of (what I believe to be ) the fans increased. A humming noise which did not exist with Snow Leopard. Any ideas how to reduce this noise?

I have seen this mentioned a dozen times, here, on Lion, and MacRumors.
    Nope. Usual suspects.
And whether you tried a clean install instead (backup and erase) and then use MA to import

  • Noise level increase with speed

My understanding is that the noise level in a WLAN is a result of the environment where wireless equipment is in use.
I have a site where the noise is around -98 dB when connected to an AP with the speed fixed on 11Mb. But when I connect to another AP in the same location, on a different channel with the speed not fixed (it can go up to 54Mb) the noise goes up to -72 dB.
Any suggestions why this may be occuring?
    Thanks.

I believe what you are seeing is the effect of stuffing more data into the same timeframe.
If you have X amount of data to send, it is encoded and sent at the signaling rate. For example ...
    |<------------------->| you have this much data:
    |<=========>|and this much noise:
If you stuff more information into the same timeslot that the noise is occurring, you end up with:
    |<-------------->| (data - same amount, shorter time)
    |<==========>|.....(Noise)
Though the noise has actually remained at the same level, the effect a "chunk" of noise has on the signal with more data (per given time period) is greater, because there is more data thee to disrupt.
I'm not sure how the devices are sensing or calculating the noise figure, but it would be a possible explaination for what you are seeing.

  • Why does NI-9233 with IEPE microphone report 39dBA as minimum noise level?

    Hi,
I have been using an ACO Pacific 1/2" IEPE microphone and preamp (7052SYS) with cDAQ and a 9233 IEPE module. The ACO mic is very similar to the G.R.A.S. 46AE (50mV/Pa) but with a 20mV/Pa sensitivity. Using this set-up in a hemi-anechoic chamber, the SPL is reported as about 39dBA (using the Sound and Vibration standard  'sound meter' VI). Yet, the third party lab's signal analyzer reports the room at about 25dBA. I have partially verified the NI set-up with a 114dB 1kHz calibrator. The NI set-up indicates about 114.3dBA. So we are on the money there.
Is there a noise floor on the 9233 that I am dealing with? Any thoughts? Recently, my company has built its own hemi-anechoic chamber and we like the NI tools. We had hoped to use the newer 9234 with a cDAQ chassis since the 51.2kS/sec is sufficient for our measurement range of 20-20kHz. We already use cDAQ extensively here.
    Thanks,
    -JD
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    From the 9233 specs:
    Integrating Noise density:
    A-Weighted Power = ( A weighting power factor for bandwidth ) * (Bandwidth) * ( Noise Level )^2
    A-Weighted Power = ( 0.53 ) * ( 20000 - 20 Hz ) * ( 400 nV / sqrt(Hz) / 20 mV / Pa )^2
    A-Weighted Power = 4.26u Pa^2 rms
    Leq (A-Weighted) = 2.06m Pa rms = 40.2 dB(A) ref 20u Pa
Calculating from Noise at full scale range:
FS = Voltage Range / Sensitivity
    FS = ( 5 / sqrt(2) ) V rms / ( 20 mV / Pa ) = 176.8 Pa rms = 138.9 dB ref 20u Pa
    Noise = 138.9 dB ref 20u Pa - 95 dB FS - 2.73 dB(A) = 41.2 dB(A) ref 20u Pa
So the fact that you are reading 39 dB(A) indicates that your 9233 noise is meeting specifications. There is still an issue that some effort needs to be made to better match the signal range to the input range of the 9233. You can add some external signal conditioning to apply pregain (20 dB) to the microphone output before the 9233. You also have other DSA hardware options that include input gain.

  • How to reduce noise level on the DAQ AO?

    Hello everyone,
I am using an analog output channel of a PCI-6014. The DAQ is sitting in a PC slot of a computer running Windows 2000. On the other side the DAQ is connected to an external (proprietary) conditioner box using the standard NI's shielded cable.
The problem is that the noise on the AO seems to be too high (around 2 mV peak-to-peak) depending on the computer load despite what is actually sent to that output. When the computer is really busy (booting up, linking an exectable, etc.), the noise level on the AO grows dramatically, while at the time the computer is idle, the noise level seems to be inside the spec range (around 1 LSB).
I replaced a computer power supply with a more powerful one, and moved the DAQ to the next PCI slot, but both measures gave just a minor improvement if any at all.
What can i do? Switch to a better-shielded or just different DAQ? Use a different form factor of the computer motherboard? What else?
    I greatly appreciate your help.
    Mike Faynberg

    Mike,
The noise could possibly be coming from the 5V supply if it is really
noisy. Perhaps a more powerful (expensive) supply could help here?
As a last resort, I've heard of people wrapping DAQ cards in aluminum
foil (completely unsupported by NI). Of course, in order to prevent
shorting, you'd want to wrap it in something insulative first, like wax
paper. And while you are in the kitchen, could you whip me up a
    sandwich?

  • Goods Issue to increase the stock levels in a plant

    Folks,
I am not a MM guy and I am trying to increase the stock levels in a plant using a Goods issue.
    1.     Can I do the Goods Issues without reference to a Purchase Order? If so, how can I do this
    2.     What are the relevant movement types when GI is made w/o reference to a Purchase Order?
    3.     Can GI be made with reference to any other entity/object other than PO?
    Thanks

    1. Can I do the Goods Issues without reference to a Purchase Order? If so, how can I do this
No u can't ..u have to do Goods receipt for a PO
Raise a PO for the same material and do GR
    2. What are the relevant movement types when GI is made w/o reference to a Purchase Order?
u cant do GI for PO
    3. Can GI be made with reference to any other entity/object other than PO?
GI aganist cost centre, production order, reservations ....
the easier way to bring in stock of a material is to do intial entry thru MB1C with mvt type 561.

  • How do I share / unlink  the right and left channel, so I can work with them individually ?

I use "Adobe Sound Booster CS5"
I have a stereo soundtrack, which I only want to remove noise in only one channel (right).
How do I share / unlink the right and left channel, so I can work with them individually ?

When Soundbooth was first developed, it had a few extra things than what were not available in Audition. However, Audition remained the more high end sound editing tool. Soundbooth was locked to a multiple channel editing approach. In Audition, single editing is easy - you simply click the L or R at the right end of the sound channel to lock it and then you can edit the other channel only.
Soundbooth has been discontinued and Audition now has taken its place from CS6 to the Creative Cloud.
The above is some background info. To your current situation, you can use a workaround like:
    * Export your audio file to separate channels by File > Export > Channels to mono files.
You will get 2 files with _L and _R suffix.
You can then edit them separately. You can go from Mono to Stereo by the following step.
    Or
    * Choose - Edit > Insert > Channels  into New Multitrack file.
That will separate the Left and Right Channels and add them to a new multitrack file.
You can then click the Edit link at the top right of the channel to edit it.
You can then save that file as a new audio file.

  • ATI Radeon X1900 XT Noise levels

    Hi,
I'm considering a Mac Pro + 4GB RAM + ATI X1900 XT to run Apeture, based on the experiences & recommendations in this forum.
Can anyone comment on the noise level of the ATI X1900 XT compared with, say, the standard GeForce 7300 GT? I use my current Mac to run iTunes, as well as some other sound based apps that would suffer if the graphics card noise level was like a jumbo jet on final approach.
Does anyone have experiences here they can share?
I read in the forum that there is a possibility of a ATI Radeon X1950 XTX for Mac Pro that is quieter ... any truth in that?
    Much appreciated.

I have a MacPro 2.66 with the X1900 which was preinstalled in the system. The card is quite noisy but it is at an acceptable level. The reason you hear it is that the MacPro itself is very silent. Two components are competing which can make more noise: the harddisk (standard model with 250 GB) and the X1900. :-))
The sound from the X1900 is a constant fan noise which you are able to ignore while you work with this awesome machine. The performance of Aperture is simply great with this card even if I just installed 1GB of RAM!
Let me say it this way: If you want great performance for Aperture you should arrange with the fan noise of the X1900. Im convinced that we will see much more silent cards in the future which will give us the same performance. Then the time for a nice christmas present will have come! :-))

  • Noise level and lost connection

Two or three times aweek I loose connection, hub lights all indicate no problem but on checking find noise level reading on hub of several million db.Unplug hub wait a few minutes and power up again normally solves the problem level back to normal 3-4db.Last week it didn't and after an hour on the phone to BT told there was a problem on the line, got connection back next day and no problems until today when I've had same problem high noise level but has reset OK.
Since BT "solved the connection problem" when running BT speedtest says there are additional services running on my connection.I do not have BT vision,so any ideas hat this is?Could this be causing a problem?

  • How should I set the parameters of PID Autotuning such as relay amplitude and PV noise level?

I want to control the temperature of a room by changing the hot water flow of a radiator with a control valve. The desirable control accuracy is +/- 0.5 degree of centigrade.
What number should I set for relay amplitude? And what number should I set for PV noise level?

    Hello loghmani,
If your output is saturating try to reduce your relay amplitude and/or reduce the gain Kc of the PID controller before starting the autotuning procedure.  You can find more information about each of the parameters that you've inquired about at this KnowledgeBase article.
I would recommend taking a look at the General Auto PID Simulator.vi example.  You can find this example by doing a search in the example finder or by clicking linked example at the bottom of the detailed help page of the Autotuning PID.vi.
If you haven't looked at the PID user manual that also contains useful information on setting up PID algorithims and Autotuning.

  • Laserjet 5100Dtn - fan noise level / additional 500 page papertray

    Hi all,
We've just upgraded our 4050n laserjet to a 5100Dtn laserjet.
    2 questions:
    - standby noise level: our 4050 is completely silent in standby; we're really amazed at the noise level of the 5100Dtn.
It's not excessive, but very audibly present.
How is your experience with the 5000 series in standby mode?
Could it be that something's wrong and our 5100 needs to enter 'deeper' standby? (We've set standby at 30 minute interval (shortest))
    - Is it possible to add a 2nd 500 page papertray?
Our supplier has provided a second one, but it lacks the electrical pass-through connections. In other words to me it is a
'bottom' tray... Do these kind of papertrays exist at all, or is this only possible with 250 page trays?
    Thanks for your help!
    Erwin

    Great opening post Carsten!
    The latest bios:
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-71252 (BIOS 66)
The FSB can be reduced from 133MHz to 100MHz using SetFSB, this also reduces the heat:
    http://www13.plala.or.jp/setfsb/
    clockgen = SLG8SP513V
If you add a shortcut to the startup folder the program will start at startup. Under properties you can change the target to:
    "C:\Program Files\SetFSB\setfsb.exe" -s100 -b1 -cg[SLG8SP513V] -w20
So it starts with a FSB of 100Mhz, in the background, with the right clock generator, after 20 seconds.

  • SG300-28P noise level... (fan control)

    Hello,
May be somebody can help me. In official information for SG300-28p noise level is 40.6 dB, but in fact its too noisy. Is it possible to change speed of fans? I use only 8 PoE ports.
    Thanks in advance,
    Andrey

    Hi Andrey,
I placed a sound meter within 6 inches of the Right hand side of my SG300-28P  and found a average dB level of 47
I rested a sound meter on top of my SG300-28P  and found a average dB level of 59-60dB  .
I used my motorola atria phone in conjunction with a Sound Meter ver 1.4.3 dB meter app to perform the measurements.
My measurements were not done according to any standards based approach for measurements of sound level of machines.
Conversation in restaurant, office, background music, Air conditioning unit at 100 ft

Half as loud as 70 dB. Fairly quiet
Quiet suburb, conversation at home. Large electrical transformers at 100 ft

One-fourth as loud as 70 dB.
Library, bird calls (44 dB); lowest limit of urban ambient sound
    40
One-eighth as loud as 70 dB.
    reference :http://www.industrialnoisecontrol.com/comparative-noise-examples.htm
My unit is no more than 3 feet from my left ear,  and I do not find the sound distracting..but noise/sound is subjective.
The fans on the SG300-28P are not adjustable.
