Expert Postscript Type 1 fonts and Leopard Capatibility

We have just upgraded to the new iMacs with Leopard OS and we are having problems with the expert and alt character postscript fonts (ex. Bulmer Exp MT). The regular postscript fonts work fine (ex. Bulmer MT) All the postscript and font suitcase files are installed. They are displayed in application lists but upon selection the application changes to default. The expert fonts also do not display in Font Book or Font ExplorerX. I have called Applecare support twice without results. Has anyone experienced similar problems or does anyone have a solution? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Illustrator CS3 - type/font and right click/font quit working??!!

All of a sudden: if I type a word out and then go to "type/font".... none of the installed font selections will show.....also will not show if the text is selected and I "right-click" my mouse.
I can change fonts if I use the interactive menu at the top of the screen.
    Any ideas???
    Thanks.

Well, I trashed the .ai prefs...... and restarted the program.... and the same thing occurs. I swear, I've never seen such an unstable program in my life.
Would appreciate any suggestions regarding this issue.... even if it's one of Adobe's 10 key combination workarounds.
    Thanks.

  • Postscript 2 & Fonts

Was wondering if anyone knows of an issue with Postscript Level 2 and certain versions of fonts ie Postscript, type 1 and Open Type Fonts.
When  I send jobs to the image setter here and the fonts are not outlined the  resulting film has double images of some fonts and so making the film  unusable. image setter is an SelectSet Avantra 25E from AGFA both AGFA  and Adobe don't want to have anything to do with this machine and are  not very helpful. I have no choice but to use it as the boss says so and  he is not planning to upgrade until maybe much later.
    Any help would be good
    Thank you

I am assuming from where you are posting this question that you are having problems printing to this imagesetter directly from InDesign. Is that correct? Assuming that this is the case, we are not aware of any problems printing to PostScript language level RIPs if (1) the RIP fully complies with the PostScript Language Reference specifications specific to language level 2 and (2) printing from InDesign uses the correct PPD corresponding to the exact imagesetter RIP being used. We are not aware of any problems printing to printers, imagesetters, or any other RIP with Adobe PostScript Level 2 due to the type of fonts used. The print subsystems of Adobe's Creative Suite products and Acrobat do whatever modifications are necessary to the fonts before putting them in the output stream based on the PostScript language level and the content of the device's PPD file.
FWIW, the last RIPs using Adobe PostScript Level 2 were sold over 12 years ago! Also, Adobe doesn't provide support to end users for OEM products such as Adobe PostScript. In this case, it would be Agfa that would be solely responsible for product support.

  • Mangal Fonts and Tunga Fonts in (MS Home and Student 2010) Word 2010 not getting converted into PDF

Why do I get a totally blank PDF file whenever I try to convert any (Microsoft Office Home and Student 2010, Version: 14.0.6029.1000) Word document file containing either Mangal Fonts (Hindi) and Tunga Fonts (Kannada) into a PDF file (by using Adobe Acrobat X Standard - English, Version: 10.1.4, Program File Size: 1790 MB, Complete/Full Version) after formatting and reinstalling all the necessary software / softwares (Microsoft Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3 and Windows XP Service Pack 3, Version: 20080414-031525, Program File Size: 9.08 MB)?
    I'm using
    01) Microsoft Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3
    02) Computer: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00 GHz 3.00 GHz, 504 MB of RAM
    03) Windows XP Service Pack 3, Version: 20080414-031525, Program File Size: 9.08 MB
    04) Microsoft Office Home and Student 2010, Version: 14.0.6029.1000, Product ID: 82503-388-0792296-26607, Program File Size: 490 MB

    06) Windows Internet Explorer 8, Version: 20090308.140743, Program File Size: 4.20 MB
Any Word 2010 document file that has been converted into any PDF File unfortunately does not show either the Mangal (Hindi) Fonts or the Tunga (Kannada) Fonts.
The PDF file will unfortunately become/remain totally/fully/completely blank.
When I convert an Excel Workbook having the Tunga Fonts (Kannada) to/into a PDF File, some of the Tunga fonts in the PDF file are legible and some are unfortunately illegible (get superimposed / overwritten on each other).
Perhaps I may get the same result if I try to convert an Excel Workbook having the Mangal Fonts (Hindi) to/into a PDF File with some Mangal fonts being/becoming legible and the rest being/becoming illegible (getting superimposed / overwritten on each other).

My chronological sequence of steps to create a Word 2010 Document or an Excel 2010 Workbook:
I first create a Word Document File or an Excel Workbook File and save it by giving an appropriate file name.
Then I right click on the closed Word Document File or the Excel Workbook File in the file folder and convert it into a PDF by retaining the same/original file name.
The font list of Microsoft Word 2010 claims/says/states that both Mangal and Tunga are True Type fonts and also that these fonts will/would be used on both printer and screen.
In case if there is any text content in English in the beginning it will get converted into PDF only till/until either a Mangal(Hindi)/Tunga(Kannada) Font starts.
The remaining English text content does not get converted into/to PDF the moment a Mangal(Hindi)/Tunga(Kannada) Font starts. If the entire matter is purely (100 per cent) in English text it will fully / completely / totally get converted into a PDF file without any problem.

  • Type font too large on website

On one website, I somehow managed to enlarge the type font or zoom in so that the sides are cropped. In the past, I've minimized the
page images and type fonts and only resolved it by blowing out Firefox and reinstalling it. This is on my laptop (Windows 7) and I think it may have something to do with letting my finger rest on the touchpad when I hit the right/left click button.

Reset the page zoom on pages that cause problems.
    *<b>View > Zoom > Reset</b> (Ctrl+0 (zero); Cmd+0 on Mac)
If you have increased the minimum font size then try the default setting "none" as a (too) high value can cause issues.
*Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced > Minimum Font Size (none)
Make sure that you allow websites to choose their fonts.
*Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced > [X] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"

  • Replacement of true type fonts on Linux

I have developed a report with Reports 6i on a Windows NT client
using the font "Times New Roman". When I generate the report on
a Linux (Suse 7.2) to a PDF-file then the font is replaced by
the font "itc avant garde gothic" although I can select the
font "Times New Roman" in the "Control Center" of KDE.
Can someone tell me why Reports is replacing the font ?
    Thanks.

Aren't the real questions:  What font are you attempting to send to the Zebra printer?  What true type fonts does your model Zebra printer support?
You should look at Google with "True type Font Zebra"...you would find this reference to Zebra with SmartForms, which is indicative of how you should proceed, probably:

  • Adobe Postscript Type 1 fonts and Windows 7

I have a disk with Adobe Postscript Type 1 fonts ("Adobe Type Basics" that I purchased in 2001). The disk includes an install program that does not work on my current computer (Windows 7, 64). Can I get those fonts installed on my current computer, and if so, how do I do it. Step by step, please. Many thanks.

Although we at Adobe certainly do recommend use of OpenType font technology going forward and especially for new publishing projects for any number of very good reasons, Adobe does continue to fully support Type 1 fonts (FWIW, TrueType and OpenType fonts are every bit as much PostScript fonts as Type 1 or Type 3 fonts are) in all our applications as well as in our Adobe PostScript and Adobe PDF Print Engine products and has committed to do so for the indefinite future.
In fact, Adobe still does license and ship Type 1 fonts in fairly high quantities. Every printer sold with Adobe PostScript 3 by Adobe's OEM partners such as Xerox, Ricoh, Canon, Océ, EFI, etc. is accompanied with host software that includes the Windows and Macintosh host versions of all the Type 1 fonts that are also printer resident.
Actually, the problem that the OP of this thread was experiencing is that apparently, the Adobe Type Basics was built without the .pfm files that normally were shipped with all Adobe type packages for Windows. When ATM was required for installation of those fonts, since ATM had the capability of building .pfm files on-the-fly, this omission wasn't noticed at the time by most users (even I wasn't aware of it until today). Otherwise, there was nothing wrong with those fonts and there was nothing about them that was “showing their age.”
Unfortunately, the Adobe Type Basics OpenType Edition is not a superset of the fonts in the original Adobe Type Basics product. Many of the font families of the original product were replaced by totally different font families. Updating to the OpenType-based product would not have solved the OP's problem without possibly needing to license a whole bunch of additional font families individually, possibly costing more than the $99 for the Adobe Type Basics OpenType Edition itself. For existing content (including templates and artwork), it is not simple to move from Type 1 to OpenType without going through existing content and globally changing all font references. The OpenType versions of Adobe's font do not have the same names as the Type 1 versions - this was not an oversight, but done for good reason since there are differences between the products in encoding and metrics that could in some cases cause layout issues.

  • Using Adobe PostScript Type 1 fonts on Lion/MacBook Pro

I recently upgraded from a 5-year-old MacBook using Snow Leopard to a MacBook Pro using Lion. I also upgraded from MS Office 2004 to MS Office 2011.
On the old MacBook, as on my even-older Cube using OS 9.2 and Office 2001, I used several old Adobe PostScript Type 1 fonts with no problem. Foremost among them were Adobe Garamond and Adobe Jenson. I've dragged the six Garamond fonts, plus its font suitcase to the Fonts folder in the Library folder. Upon seeing some fleeting font installation messages, I thought all was well.
But no luck. The fonts don't appear as options on old or new documents. Any suggestions or solutions?

  • Font Book does not recognize some Postscript type 1 font files

I am new to OS X and am trying to copy all of the fonts used under OS 9 (using Suitcase) to be available under OS X. I have copied all of my font folders into the correct location, but some of them do not appear in the font list within Font Book, and if I try to use the Add Fonts... menu to select these files they are grayed out.
The Finder shows all the problem fonts to be "PostScript Type 1 outline font", just as for the files which do work. Is there any reason some files may not work in the Font Book? Note that if the files are corrupted, I don't understand because they were (and still are) working fine under the Classic environment.
I'm not sure, but I don't think any of my TrueType files have similar problems. I have noticed that all of the PostScript Type 1 fonts which do work have an additional suitcase file in the folder, whereas the problem fonts do not. Does Font Book require a suitcase file to properly recognize and use the Type 1 files? I thought that the suitcase only contained the bitmapped fonts which are obsolete to OS X, but that's a guess...
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi roxlankford,
Font Book can read PostScript fonts. But, as you've noted, you don't have the whole font. Type 1 PostScript fonts are a set. One file is a suitcase containing all of the low res bitmap screen fonts. The rest are the outline printer fonts. As an example, here's Adobe Garamond.
    Adobe Garamond
    AGarBol
    AGarBolIta
    AGarIta
    AGarReg
    AGarSem
    AGarSemIta
The first file which I highlighted in green is the font suitcase of bitmap screen fonts. The rest are the outline printer fonts.
    1) The files for a Type 1 PostScript font must have both the screen and printer fonts for a given set in order to work. They also must be in the same folder.
    2) The suitcase of bitmap fonts will work alone, but output will be terrible since the system will print the fonts using the 72 dpi screen fonts in the suitcase if the outline portions are missing.
    3) Having only the outline fonts will not work. You will get exactly what you are having problems with. You can see the fonts, but Font Book won't load them. That's not a problem with Font Book itself. No font manager will load outline fonts without the matching suitcase of screen fonts present.

  • Help! Have trouble installing PostScript Type 1 fonts on Windows 7

Hey there. I had a font package by a gift from a friend. As I open the font pack, All of the PostScript Type 1 font has a blank white icon. It's not working. I installed Adobe Type Manager but it's not compatible with my Windows 7 computer. Does anyone know what another font application that can open and install PostScript Type 1 fonts on my Windows 7? Please Help.

Windows Type 1 fonts each consist of two files, a .pfb file containing the font itself and a .pfm file containing extended font metrics used for formatting text on the host computer. If you don't have both files for a particular font, the font is uninstallable and unusable. To install a Type 1 font on a Windows system, the .pfb and .pfm for the font should be in the same directory. Right click on the font and click on Install or Install as shortcut. Install copies the two files to the \Windows\Fonts directory and subsequently uses the font from that location. Install as shortcut uses the font from the location the files are currently located in with the caveat that you must keep those files in that location or else the fonts will no longer be accessible.
If you actually attempted to install Adobe Type Manager on 32-bit Windows 7 (or later) system, you may have destroyed your system's ability to properly install and use Type 1 fonts at all. If this has happened, you may need to reinstall Windows! (If I recall correctly, the installer for ATM refuses to run at all on Windows 64-bit versions, sparing you the destruction of your Type 1 rendering!)

  • CS4 and .OTF fonts in leopard!!

Im have newly purchased a font style which is .OTF file, installed it on my mac (last leopard update), and are now ready to use it in photoshop CS4. But this is the only place it doesn work properly. As you can see in the atteched images, one taken from word, one taken from photoshop, the photoshop make a lot of mess out of the characters. Its like it thinks its a ending and a beginning of a word in all the characters, and want to put on some fancy handwriting design here and there. And then this results in it all just layering on top of eachother.. But this doesnt happen in other softwares.. What can i do to make photohop do the right thing here? any ideas ?

What you are seeing are ligatures - like Doug says check the Open Type settings in the Character Palette. Unfortunately PS does not have a glyph palette so you could have complete control over this.
If you have Illustrator or InDesign they are much easier to use with full featured Open Type fonts because they have glyph palettes. You could set the text in there and then copy and paste into PS.

  • Adobe Postscript Fonts and Fontbook

Many years ago, using Mac OS7, I bought some Adobe Postscript fonts and I was using Extensis Suitcase to manage the fonts. Now, I want to add some of those old fonts to my Mac Pro using Tiger 10.4.11 and Fontbook. Is there a way to get those fonts where I can use them in Fontbook? They won't open except in Suitcase - an application I haven't used in years and I no longer have. I have my old serial number but it won't accept it to open the fonts.
So, the question is: How can I use these fonts today? Is there a way? Anybody?
    Thanks.

I have my old serial number but it won't accept it to open the fonts.
This number is to unlock an old Font Folio disk you purchased from Adobe? It may not work to unlock the disk because if it's that old (purchased around the same time as System 7), it would require Classic to run, which your new Macs can't do. You'll have to contact Adobe about that. I'm guessing their only solution would be to have you upgrade to Font Folio 11's OpenType fonts. But that's going to cost you full price anyway. Don't count on them to give you an alternative way to open that old disk. But it can't hurt to ask.
This is confusing. First you say:
They won't open except in Suitcase - an application I haven't used in years and I no longer have.
    Then follow it later with:
Somehow Suitcase is holding them hostage where they can only be opened and used with Suitcase.
Are you, or are you not using Suitcase on your current Macs?
I'm going to guess though what your meaning is.
If your saying you DO have Suitcase on your new Macs, they have nothing to do with Font Book not being able to open the fonts. Both are font managers. Nothing more. If they open in Suitcase, but won't in Font Book, then there's something wrong with Font Book.
If you mean you DON'T have Suitcase on your current Macs, then the old version of Suitcase you previously used has absolutely nothing to do with being able, or not able to open fonts with Font Book. Again, they're both just font managers. They open and close fonts when you tell them to, that's it. They have no special ties to your fonts in any manner.
    Is any of this true?
Type 1 PostScript fonts are a set. One file is a suitcase containing all of the low res bitmap screen fonts. The rest are the outline printer fonts. As an example, here's Adobe Garamond.
    Adobe Garamond
    AGarBol

    2) The suitcase of bitmap fonts will work alone, but output will be terrible since the system will print the fonts using the 72 dpi screen fonts in the suitcase if the outline portions are missing.
    3) Having only the outline fonts will not work. You will get exactly what you are having problems with. You can see the fonts, but they will not load. That's not a problem with Font Book, Suitcase or other font manager. None of them, nor the system itself will load outline fonts from a Type 1 PostScript font without the matching suitcase of screen fonts present.
So are you simply missing the screen font suitcase for those outline fonts that Font Book can't open? If so, that's normal. You must have both in the same folder.

  • Fonts and Mac OS 10.6.5 Snow Leopard - any guide available?

FONTS: I am trying to find an Apple pdf guide or information on how to work with Fonts, where they are stored etc. For example - in HD/Library/Fonts I have 185 items - of which 184 are fonts; and 1 is a Microsoft fonts folder, in which there are 131 items - all fonts - some which are duplicates (exact??) of the other 184 fonts in the fonts folder.
Then there are NO fonts in /scschulte(user)/Library/Fonts but 4 files that seem to contain information about fonts.
    There are protected fonts in the system folder/Library/Protected fonts;
There are disabled fonts folders and font collection folders...
    even fonts in iMovie!
How to manage this, reduce the number without causing problems; how to know when to use / keep a Microsoft font vs another etc. etc....?!
Thanks for any info here-- and is this similar (or exactly the same) in SL as in Leopard?? (I have the Missing Manual for Leopard, but not Snow Leopard).
