Explain Compression Options when Saving as TIFF

Adobe PhotoShop CS5 offers three options for convertion of a RAW file to TIFF (LZW, ZIP, and JPEG).
I would appreciate if someone can help me to make sense of the following.
I do not understand which of these employ the "run-length encoding" scheme that should make the TIFF
file much smaller than the RAW file.  I  have used all three types of compression but the only one that
resulted in a subtantial reduction in size was the JPEG compression.
The TIFF file with no compression is actually twice the size of the raw file.
What are the LZW and ZIP compressions actually doing?
Thanks

How did you arrive at the conclusion that the tif should be smaller than the RAW-file?
jpg is a lossy compression, so best avoided uo until the final output.
As for lzw and zip (from the Help):
LZW (Lemple-Zif-Welch) Lossless compression; supported by TIFF, PDF, GIF, and PostScript language file formats. Most useful for images with large areas of single color.
ZIP Lossless compression; supported by PDF and TIFF file formats. Like LZW, ZIP compression is most effective for images that contain large areas of single color.
So image-noise for example can negate all savings and I think zip with 16bit is a problem.

  • Resolution Issues in Jpeg Options when Saving

Hi, I am suddenly experiencing an issue when saving Jpeg files in photoshop CS4. I work on hundreds of files at a time. I open the Jpeg photo, edit it and when ready hit 'save' and 'return' to accept the settings which are usually set by default to 12. But recently Photoshop is randomly selecting a lower compression in the Jpeg options when saving. It is only on a few random images though. If I open the original, re-edit the image and save it again, then it usually saves at 12 on the second attempt which is even more strange... Can I lock the settings to by default save all files at level 12 to avoid having to re-edit the shots I happen to miss spotting the change in compression on?
And doesn anyone know what would prompt photoshop to suddenly save certain images in a lower res automatically? I am wasting hours re-editing and double checking files which is very frustrating. Please help!!
Thank you in advance for any asdvice.

Hi Mark, thanks for your reply but the images I'm working on are all shot with the same settings and exported out of iPhoto with the same settings before imported into Photoshop for editing. So they haven't yet been saved in Photoshop. My problem is when I save the file after editing, photoshop is automatically selecting 0 Jpeg image quality rather than 12, which is what it generally selects, except now on these few select images? It's all a bit bizarre because I have used this method for 4 years and now all of a sudden I am having this problem. I assumed I had hit a shortcut somewhere and adjusted the parameters unintentionally. It's rather hard to explain  but I hope that makes more sense. Thanks again to anyone who can help, I'm deseperate to get to the bottom of this....

  • No crop mark option when saving as PDF in CS4

I am using photoshop CS4 on a PC.
When saving as a PDF on the left hand side option list there is no crop mark/ trim option available (listed with output, compression etc).
When saving as a PDF via the print option the image loses its high res dpi so this method is not an option.
Any suggestions to how i can get the trim mark option when "saving as PDF"?
    Thanks :-)

Select show options when placing and select the appropriate crop to choice.

  • No JPG option When saving from Previewer?

I liked the jpg option when saving a screencapture in Tiger. Why was that jpg option removed in Lion?
Now if you want to save a png image as a jpg you need to buy software to do that.
    Am I missing something?
    Thank you.

Export in .jpeg -- it's the same as .jpg -- an explaination for why it has a different extension but is the same thing can be found at the link below.

  • How to add/change Job Options when saving a FrameMaker document as a PDF using Acrobat 9

If you are logged on as a domain user you could have a problem if you want to add or edit .joboption files in Distiller 9 when it is opened by FrameMaker.
After installing Acrobat 9 the action of saving a FrameMaker document as a PDF automatically starts Distiller 9 which then uses the "Job Options" files that are located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings. Unless some changes have been made to the "Security" settings of the "Adobe" folder and the "Adobe PDF" folder under "All Users" it will not be possible to add or edit ".joboption" files in the "Settings" folder located in that "Adobe PDF" folder.
This can be confusing because when Distiller 9 is started separately, from Programs, it then uses the job options located in your own user folder (C:\Documents and Settings\NLPW\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings). In your own user folder (in my case: NLPW) you can add or edit the job option files.
In order to be able to add or edit job option files under "All Users" you must be included in the "All Users" list and have the appropriate "Permissions" security setting. To set this, right click on the "Adobe" folder (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe) and select "Properties", then click on the "Security" tab and add yourself to the list. Finally, (important) check the "Full Control" box under "Allow" in the permissions field. Repeat this procedure on the "Adobe PDF" folder (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe PDF). Now you have the ability to add or edit ".joboption" files located in the "Settings" folder and these will be available when Distiller is started by FrameMaker.

Thank you so much for that tip. I don’t have exactly the same set-up (FrameMaker 8, Acrobat 8 Professional), but changing the permissions as you describe fixed the problem of not being able to save or change Distiller job options which has been bothering me for a while.

  • Does Preview compress PDFs when saving?

Hi.  My scanner can group separate scans into a single PDF on its own, but it is significantly slower than scanning documents separately and merging them with Preview.
Since scans are essentially saved twice when going the "merge with Preview" route (once when scanned, again when merged), I'm curious to know whether Preview compresses PDFs with each save.  If so, I'd like to know how lossy this process is.  Anyone know?
Thanks in advance for any help / info!

  • "Compress" option in Finder .. Do you lose any quality?

Hello. I'm just wondering about the "Compress" option when you right-click anything in the "Finder".. I know that it makes a (.zip) file of whatever you select..
Does this compression cause any reduction in quality? I have a TON of (.wav) and (.mp3) libraries that I would like to compress for storage purposes, but it is extremely important that there will be no loss in sound quality or file integrity..
    Thoughts?

No. You only lose quality when using an audio compression method; the Finder uses a data compression one, which preserves everything.
General data compression methods need to be lossless. Unlike audio-specific ones, the program performing the compression has no way of knowing what can be safely discarded.

  • Colorshift when saving

    Hello:
When I edit an image and save it in PSD format it gets (most of the time) a pink hue.  At first I thought it was because they were 16 bit depth, so I converted to 8bit.  Seemed to help.  Now I edited some first in Lightroom 4 and then finisehd in Photoshop and again I get the shift.  Colors stay true when saving in TIFF format though.  Working in Windows7 64 bit.
    Any ideas ??
    Thank you
    Andre

I'm on OS X 10.7, your profile says you're on 10.6.8, so i can't duplicate what you are seeing. If I was to guess, I'd say it is related to changes made for Lion where versions are  periodically saved automatically in the background, where you wouldn't want a progress window always popping up. "Save" has become "Save a Version" and, though I hadn't noticed, probably also does not pop up a progress window..

  • After migrating to a new MBP, when saving or opening documents, I sometimes (but not always) get a warning such as: "Word cannot save this document due to a naming or permissions error on the destination volume." Can someone please explain?

I recently migrated from a MBP with OS 10.6 to a MCB with OS 10.8. Some glitches are popping up. Here's the one on my mind at the moment:
When saving or opening documents, I get a warning such as: "Word cannot save this document due to a naming or permissions error on the destination volume." Can someone please explain?

Since this is isolated to a single file, try exporting it to Interchange Format (.inx), then open and save the resulting file as a new InDesign file.
Since the problem occurs during export, that may not be possible. Another option to try would be to copy all elements, page by page, and "paste in place" into a new document the same size. If you used layers, be sure to enable "paste remembers layers" in the layers panel menu.
This kind of problem is often indicative of an underlying font issue. You said there are only three fonts, and you should verify that in Type > Find Font... Try replacing, at least temporarily the fonts in use with something else that you know to be reliable from other documents. You might want to do this before the other steps.

  • Yosemite Preview enlarges TIFF files when saving

When opening a TIFF file (approx. 2-3 MB) and manipulating it, such as changing the orientation, Preview automatically saves it and inflates the file size to over 140 MB. Are other seeing this, perhaps with different file types as well? If so, is the a way to get Preview to stop this? I find nothing in its Preferences related to this.

When doing a Save As in Preview (hold down the Option key) you can select the  compression you want:
Don't check the checkbox at the bottom or the original file will also be rotated and changed.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can't share preview files to an iOS device. There are several other options for pdf's such as Adobe Reader or iBooks.

  • Pdf options box missing when saving as pdf

When saving as a pdf in Illustrator CS3, the PDF OPTIONS box is missing, and the program locks up.  If I hit ENTER (as if the options box was there), the file saves properly, and the program is unlocked.  It appears that the OPTIONS box is hidden, but operational.  Suggestions?

I'll assume you're working on a Windows system.
    It's there, just off-screen.
Have you ever had a second monitor installed or worked at a different screen resolution?
Unfortunately, the PDF options dialog cannot be repositioned using normal methods (see http://forums.adobe.com/message/2465666#2465666). Position information is buried deep in the Windows registry, so resetting prefs (and, possibly, even reinstalling Illustrator) won't help.
Can you temporarily switch to a higher resolution or attach a second monitor? Once you have the dialog visible, you can pull it into your primary monitor area. It should then stay there after you restore your setup.
Creating a new Windows user account and logging in as a new user might also solve the problem.

  • For some reason, my compression option is grayed out under "File" menu, and when I select a folder with multiple files, or multiple documents, and try to right-click or tap the mousepad with two fingers, I do not get a "compress" option available. Help.

I don't know why, but when I select a folder with multiple docs contained within it, or multiple files, the Compress option is grayed out under the File menu, nor is it available when I right-click. Please help.

Yes it is, but I have the same problem of the option does not appear with "right click" (I'm actually control-clicking), and COMPRESS is grayed out under the file menu. I'd like to fix it.
Hmm. After finding the Archive Utility,* I tried archiving the folder. It came out as .cpgz, ugh. Found there was a preference to make .zip the default. It worked!
And now…the menus are not grayed out. ?!?! OK.'
    Hope this helps someone.
*You cannot find this via search, apparently it is a hidden file, you have to click from the root drive through to /System/Library/CoreServices (Thanks for the file path Alberto!)
