[Explained] X crash at boot - prop. nvidia involved, but very odd

I've been having issues with the proprietary nvidia driver for some time now, but got it to work today and in turn figured out what the problem was, kind of.
So I installed the necesary stuff and made damn sure to disable auto start of Slim, to avoid any significant issues and it worked. I could start X via startx or 'systemctl start slim'', it made no difference, so obviously I thought it safe to enable autostart of slim.
That was a bit mistake. Next when I rebooted I had the same issue once again. Back screen and the fan going haywire.
So I decided to go with another manager and since I just installed LXDE, of course LXDM was appropiate and the issue was exactly the same.
in short:
startx [works]
systemctl start slim/lxdm [works]
systemctl enable slim/lxdm; reboot [crash boom bang]
The odd thing though, and I only tried this with slim, is that if .xinitrx is empty, slim has no issue starting.
Also, I had no such issues using the nouveau driver, so it would seem that the proprietary nvidia driver is to blame, somehow.
safe to say I'm very very confused.
I've looked at a few logs, but have found nothing that, to me at least, looked relevant.
So if you have any ideas, any at all, please do let me know. It's a fairly insignificant problem, all things considered, but I'd really like it fixed.
Best regards.

This a current kernel issue with 3.11 and 3.10.
You got two options.
1) Downgrade to 3.9
2) On my Zenbook i could enable "Fast CMS" which solved the problem.
I suspected that 3.11 for workgroups had something to do with it.
Anyway, while I'm grateful for your answer, I haven't the slightest idea what "fast cms" is in this content and obviously Google is not helpful help as CMS usually refer to content management system.
So if you could please give me a hint, it will be very much appreciated.
Best regards.
Sorry. In the BIOS on my Asus Zenbook there is something called "Fast CMS" in the boot section which is by default disabled. I have tried googling, but i got no idea what it does or what it is. I just read a thread where someone said it was solved by enabling it.
Well, I've got nothing like that sadly. Guess I'll have to wait for the kernel and nvidia folks to sort this out.
Thanks again.

when I go to open a page, it is very slow opening, or may not open at all........circle just goes around.....this is true for any site......mail, sites I have visited many times.......never had a problem until I upgraded to firefox4.......do I need to change firewall settings? If I do, how?
Just updated adobe, it crashes more than not......

First I already have my view set to show everything so that is not the problem.
But I just tried opening "Computer" from the start button then type in profiles.ini in the address bar and hit enter. The profile manager opened with my profile listed. I selected it and hit start firefox and it opened as it should.
I closed it again and tried to open it from the shortcut in my task bar and I got the Sorry window.
But then I tried to open it from the short cut you get when you press the start button and program list and it work!
I went back to my desk top and tried the short cut on the desk top and it worked.
So I deleted the short cut on the task bar and created a new one and it worked.
I rebooted the computer and tried again and the task bar shortcut works and has the right profile.
So it seems that the problem is that the short cut was corrupted and was causing the error that caused the program to fail to open.
I had no idea a shortcut could do that. In the past I have had short cut stop working but never do what this one did.
I still have no idea where the profiles.ini is.

  • MBP 2010 8gb ram Crashing on boot

I have tried to upgrade my 2010 13" MBP with the 8gb 1333 DDR3 corsair. I did this once already with my 2009 15" MBP and worked just fine without any problems. I have read many success stories for upgrading a 2010 13" with the exact same ram and it's begining to frustrate me because i can't figure out if it's hardware or software with the computer. I did try the new ram in 15" just to make sure the ram wasn't bad and it booted just fine. Back to the 13" it will either simply crash on boot and have a error messae wich i can try to add a link to later but i did get this crash report (see below) after i put in the old 2gb sticks running at 1033. But it will either simply crash or i will get the grey apple logo and the spinner will start spinning for about 10 seconds than freeze. I let it sit for about 10-20 minutes multiple times to see if it just needed to think but it didn't progress pass that. i've also tried just using one of the single sticks instead of having both in and that didn't help either. tried reseting pram and enter safe mode but both attempts ended in it crashing the same way. I also tried using a different harddrive from another 13 macbook that had Snow lion on it thinking that something rooted on the 13" MBP operating system was causing it not to boot properly with the ram, that also didn't work. I am up for any suggestions. Thank you - D

I know that it says that it likes 1033 but..... when i had read around to upgrad my 15" people said it would work and would just clock the ram speed down from 1333 to 1033. I installed it and to a shocking suprise it didn't even clock it down to 1033. My frustration is that this 13" MBP is a year newer and isn't even wanting to boot with the ram. I would assume, and be glad with it booting and just clocking the RAM down. i wouldn't see why that wouldn't be a problem. Thank you though for youru suggestion.  Thanks - DJ

  • Yosemite crashes on boot after upgrading from lion

Downloaded Yosemite and installed - it then crashes on boot about 10 - 15% through (with Apple logo). Have restored Time Machine twice. *** is the problem? 2011 Mac Mini with zero third party software, thing gets bored daily just web browsing, playing music, and storing pictures... can Apple please produce some decent software for a change? Any solutions would be gratefully received

Paste the log in a reply. Please do not use a screen shot as they can be hard to read. If there are repeated runs of the same messages, please post only one run. • [BUG] Photoshop CC crashed immediately after selecting NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M GPU

I just started using Photoshop CC trial and I immediately ran into problem with my video card.
First Photoshop doesn't recognized my GPU which is Nvidia GTX 680M. I'm using a new Alienware R4 with Win8 pro, I then searched the forum and followed this thread
Photoshop CS6 doesn't recognize my NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675M GPU?http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1157982
After following the instruction now Photoshop CC is supposely using my NVIDIA GPU, but it immediately crashed after launching, for both 32 bits and 64 bits. My NVIDIA driver version is 320.49 600 series, the latested one I just updated. If I deselect the NVIDIA option in the control panel I no longer suffer the crash problem but as you know there is a reported problem with Intel HD4000 integrated GPU where screen flickering keeps happening if you use a toolbox. To avoid the problem the only thing I can do is to deselect the use GPU option in CC option (changing the mode advanced setting doesn't help). By deselcting the GPU option get rid of the problem but there is another problem with zooming: it cannot zoom in real time anymore, instead it's having a toolbox where you choose a reagion and it will jump to that region, and I can only zoom in by doing this, not zooming out.
So basically I had a problem with NVIDIA which crashes CC immediately and a problem with Intel HD4000 integrated GPU with flickering screen and another problem with no GPU selected where I cannot zoom in real time. Whatever I do always give me some sets of problem that I can't solve.
BTW I haven't try CS6 yet, I may proceed to download a trial copy and I thought CC and CS6 are using the same core. Nevertheless, those problem should definately be looked into.
    Any helps? Thanks in advance.

My aspire 6920 crashes after booting correctly - screen zig zags and freezes - any ideas to help plse? This does not happen in safemode which I am working in now - I have seen a list of dowloadable drivers on the acer site but not at all sure if I should download any. If laptop is really on its way out I will have to let it go - but I would appreciate any advice to extent its life,  Thanks

Many thanks - relieved that it can be done but I am very unconfident that I can do this - is the display driver the display adapter in Vista? Not at all sure how to install new driver from Acer site - Could I use 'Drivers for free' download - I tried to set up an account with them after seeing their free download on CINET but not able to from 'safe mode' and laptop crashes when I try to do anything ( after about a minute ) in ordinary mode.  Any further advice welcome, thanks

  • Windows 8 crash on boot from hibernate

Ever since I bought my Thinkpad S1, the thing has had trouble rebooting from hibernate. 9/10 times it crashes on boot and i have to shut down the laptop with the power button in order to reboot it manually. It always crashes while the spinning windows 8 loading icon is showing.

    Yes, probably you are right.
Its very strange that you cannot install any of the Windows systems. Even if there would be a software problem, the Recovery Disk should solve this.
But according to your last message, the recovery disk does not work too and therefore a hardware problem is possible.
Unfortunately, its difficult to say whats exactly wrong here without running some diagnostic software and checking the hardware parts.

The two hardware issues that come to mind are loose or unseated ram module(s) and resetting the SMC. There have been quite a few folks reporting an issue with a unseated ram module that reinstalling fixed.

  • X-Server Crashes on Boot After Switch From Catalyst to Open Source ATI

Seems like there's a lot of similar stuff to this, but I've searched and googled and I haven't found anything that seems to apply directly to me. Please forgive me if there's a thread I've overlooked.
I recently wanted to give Catalyst a try, because I wanted to play a few old games in wine, and they didn't seem to work with the xf86 driver. It worked, the games played, but the instability wasn't worth it, so today I tried to go back. I followed the instructions for switching on the ATI wiki page, and now I have an xserver crash on boot, and somehow it's also wrecked my wifi.
I've tried everything in the "preparing for catalyst users" section on the wiki, and I've come up empty.
Obviously, as I can't get into X and there's no internet on that machine, I can't post my log file. If there's any info you people would find helpful, please ask.
    Thanks.

The only way to get real help is to find a way around that. Arrange to use someone else's computer for a short time and copy your log file to that one. Also, why not rename your log and then post it by switching back to Catalyst to get back to your last "working state"?
As for the wireless problem, what happens when you run iwconfig? Common commands are:
Listing networks -- iwlist wlan0 scan
Connecting to one -- iwconfig wlan0 essid NAME && dhcpcd wlan0

  • XP crashes when booting everything apart from safe mode

My PC (with K7N-ILSR mobo) has been running fine for ages. Suddenly now it's crashing when booting - it crashes for everything apart from safe mode. it also crashes on safe mode with networking. i've tried disabling the onboard LAN, unplugging the cable, etc without success. any idea what i can do to fix it?

    to dancing_bear,
try to resinstall the graphics card drivers in safe mode. this problem is likely due to corrupted graphics card drivers. if still fails, i suggest that u back up your data, then perform a reformat and reinstallation of the operating system.
if problem still persist after all these workarounds, then open up your pc chassics and observe all the cooling fans. make sure that are all working properly. (of course your pc has to be on) if any of the fan is not spining or spining very slowly, then its time to replace them. also not forgetting to check on the capacitors as well. they should not be bludging from the top or having brownish substances at the top or bottom of the capacitors. if you happen to see these, then send your motherboard for a recap.
    cheers

  • Crash on boot

I'm trying to install ArchLinux but unfortunately the installer crashes on boot.
Based on experience with another distro, I'm pretty sure this is related to udev in that I know for a fact that my computer has an issue with 175-3, which is the version that the ArchLinux installer is using.
Is a previous version of the installer available or is it possible to customize the installer to use a previous udev version during boot (I'm looking for an installer using udev 171-3)
    Thanks.

    Thank you for your feedback.
The case is... the system I'm running now, is using udev 171-3. The moment I upgrade udev (to 175-3), the system no longer fully boots (I've spend quite some time a while ago isolating which packages in the upgrade process that caused this behavior).
The kernel loading either just stops, stops with a lot of text on the screen or stops and reboots.
Yesterday, due to a stupid mistake, I upgraded udev and bang... the system refused to boot. That's why I started to look for an alternative. Unfortunately, the newer installation ISO's for the distro I'm running crashes during boot. As does the ArchLinux one.
So I guess I'm stuck at what I have (which is not really that bad, because it's using the same package update scheme as ArchLinux and therefore never really gets outdated)
    uname -a reports: Linux jada 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.32-1 x86_64 GNU/Linux
The CPU is a E8600 overclocked at 4GHz.
The system is installed on a SSD, with home and swap located on a software RAID.
So back to my question that remain unanswered:
Is a previous version of the installer ISO available or is it possible to customize the installer to use a previous systemd/udev version during boot?
    Thanks.

  • I've downloaded Compressor but it crashes on boot

Mac Pro 2 x 3 GHz Dual Core intel Xeon, 9GB RAM, OSX 10.7.5
Just bought Compressor from the App Store and despite 3 installs, uninstalls with Digital Rebellion FCS remover it crashes on boot. I also have FCP X 10.0.7 which works fine other than it wont 'Share' the project in any format and gives the error 'com.apple.CompressorKit.ErrorDomain error -1' both with Compressor installed and without.
    Help appreciated urgently.

  • Coreservicesd crashes on boot

I've been having a major problem with my installation of Tiger. It's been playing up for ages (applications refusing to quit even when a killall command is issued from the terminal, etc) and now it won't even boot. It cycles between a blank blue screen and a blue screen with the throbber.
I've tracked the problem down to coreservicesd crashing on boot, so I suspect lsregister to be at fault. The problem is that lsregister exits with a segmentation fault when I launch it from single user mode, so I can't rebuild it.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

The only way I've been able to recover from a segmentation fault was an archive & reinstall.

  • GDM Crashes on boot + no touchpad

    Gdm:
Gdm crashes on boot because xorg segfaults (multiple times mind you). This only happens when I have the catalyst drivers installed, works fine with xf86 version. I *can* manually start gnome-session either with that command, or by using startx. As far as I can tell everything works once i do it like this, however TTY1 remains stuck on the boot screen.
I am using the custom x114 repo that was provided on the catalyst wiki page and have the 114.5 xorg version installed form it. I also have the latest catalyst version installed from it's repos (NOT from AUR).
    Touchpad:
My touchpad does not work at all, I have tried both the normal xf86-input-synaptics package and the one included in the custom x114 repo. It did work when I was using the opensource drivers and the normal version of xorg, though.
    Anyone have any ideas?
