Exploit? - My iPod Shuffle 4G USB cable has IC's in its Type-A plug end

I purchased a cable for a Shuffle 4G and as a result of the cover from its Type-A USB connector-end coming loose I noticed some unexpected and potentially alarming chips installed on a PCB concealed within the connector cover.
This may be quite normal but to allay any fears I would like to know if the iPod Shuffle 4G's sync cable is 'active' - that is it understood that it will contain some electronics.
I want to assure myself that this cable isn't a USB Exploit device.

It's probably legitimate.  I've taken apart the little "dock" for the 2nd generation Shuffle, and it contains a circuit board with a dozen or so components.  They appear to be mostly passive (resistors and capacitors), not ICs, so it may not be "active" in the usual electronics sense of the word, but it clearly isn't just a plug and some wire.  Thus, I would not be surprised to find electronics in the 4th generation USB cable.
Think about what the cable has to do.  One end presents a standard USB "A" plug interface, with standard power and data in/out impedances and voltage levels.  The other end plugs into a jack on the Shuffle that is a headphone output most of the time, and which might actually be playing audio at the time the USB cable is plugged in.  So a certain amount of electrical isolation between the two interfaces is a good idea.

  • IPod shuffle 3G USB cable for 2G shuffle

Does anyone know why you can't use the iPod shuffle 3G USB cable to connect an iPod shuffle 2G to a Mac? The jack plug that plugs into the shuffles looks the same in both cases.

Although the plug looks the same, the "rings" have different meaning...

  • IPod Shuffle Sports Case Cable Adapter??????

Does anyone know where I can get an iPod Shuffle Sports Case Cable Adapter?
I purchased a Sports Case but it did not come with an adapter. I talked with Apple Support for an hour one day and they said they never heard of such a thing. I told them that it is on the Apple Forum and they still said it does not exist.
If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be most grateful!!

The adapter is to use non Apple headphones with the case.
The hole in the case is made to fit the Apple headphones, which have a very small covering over the plug.

Unfortunatly if you want to use headphones other than the apple ones, you have to use an adapter that comes with the package and it makes the cord extra long"

My apple ipod shuffle's ear headset has lost..And My ipod is in warranty period..So Can I get a new one for free or i should bye ?

Frankly just about any headset with the proper size connection will likely work.  We like ear buds with soft coverings so even when we get a hard headset with a player we swap them out.  While Apple might just possibly give you a set for free since they are not an expensive item, loss is not covered by warranty.  If you're a long drive from an Apple Store it might cost you more in fuel and vehicle wear and tear than going to a local store and buying a comfortable replacement.

  • Ipod shuffle with integrated cable?!?

My son came home from school with what to all appearances is a 2nd gen ipod shuffle (bought from a friend that upgraded to the standard ipod).
The only problem is that this shuffle has a 36"cable coming out of the side opposite the headphone jack. I can find no information about a 2nd gen shuffle with a cable. The shuffle is white plastic and 1"x3/4" with the proper controls on the face and the integrated clip. the edges are also rounded looking at it from the front unlike what I am seeing online. It has the model number a1187 on the back (hard to see with the clip, but it's there.
Is this a knock-off, an early prototype, or what? If it is a genuine apple what kind of adapter do we need to connect it to USB?

  • How to start? Ipod keeps showing USB cable icon

I passed by the apple store today and to my surprise the IPod shuffle was allready on sale. So i bought one and now I'm trying to get it to work to play around. I was able to connect it to Itunes on my windows XP machine, sync some albums and some photos onto it. But when no matter what i tried, the ipod keeps displaying an image of the USB cable with an arrow pointing to a CD. The battery is fully charged.
    HOW DO I START IT?
Makes me feel real stupid, and it's either a very stupid thing i'm forgetting, or a very serious problem...
    Any ideas?

Sorry for stupid question, but.... did you set up your iPod Touch as instructed in the manual?
    =================
    Setting Up iPod touch
*Before you can use any of the iPod touch features, you must use iTunes to set up*
*and register iPod touch, and to create an iTunes Store account* (if you don’t already
    have one).
    Set up iPod touch
    1. Download and install the latest version of iTunes from www.apple.com/itunes.
    2. Connect iPod touch to a USB 2.0 port on your Mac or PC using the included cable.
The USB port on most keyboards doesn’t provide enough power. Unless your keyboard
has a high-powered USB 2.0 port, you must connect iPod touch to a USB 2.0 port on
    your computer.
    3. Follow the onscreen instructions in iTunes to set up iPod touch and sync your music,
    video, photos, and other content.
*Your computer must be connected to the Internet.*

  • My Ipod shuffle NOW thinks it has a 298.1 Gb storage capacity.  Help, plz.

    Good afternoon,
I have a 512 MB Ipod Shuffle, that I have used successsfully for 9 months without a single glitch, until now.
I'm using itunes 6.0.4.2, and the ipod shuffle is running software version 2006 03-23.
I have a Dell PC running Windows XP Pro. The USB port that I plug my Ipod into is fully powered.
When I plugged my Ipod in this morning to update my playlist...my computer recognized it as a new ipod. The name I had given it was no longer there: Instead it read DATARAID. The storage capacity is now listed as 298.1 GB.
When I click on the shuffle icon from within itunes, it claims that it has successfully loaded my entire library (29GB), onto my tiny shuffle. But of course, none of the songs play...instead the two green lights on the front of the ipod flash.
I have searched the discussion databases for helpful advice.
    So far I have:
reset my ipod shuffle: didn't work.
I have COMPLETELY removed and reinstalled itunes and the ipod updater following the proper procedures listed in the support database: didn't fix the problem.
I have run Ipod updater and restored my shuffle to "factory settings". The restore completed "successfully", but interestingly the dialog box for the restore lists the capacity of my shuffle as 298.1 GB.: didn't fix the problem.
I also attempted to specify the drive name of my shuffle as was posted to this discussion earlier by going to Disk management within windows. However, my shuffle does not appear in this list. It does, however, appear within Itunes: did't fix the problem.
I would GREATLY appreciate an suggestions about how to fix this problem. Especially, if my flash drive has spontaneously grown to 298.1 GB!
I spend long hours in the dark staring through the barrel of a microscope. Listening to my ipod makes the time pass faster.
    Thanks.

    The article posted above
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93499
is the correct thing to follow, but due to the way the iPod's update and are recognized and unmounted by the computer, there may be additional steps necessary.
Start with the iPod disconnected and all windows closed. Hold down the CTRL and ALT keys on the keyboard and then tap the DEL key to bring up the Windows Task Manager. In the Task Manager, click the Processes tab at the top. Then locate "iPodService.exe" in the list of running processes. Click it, and then click End Process at the bottom of the screen, and say yes to the warning message. Do the same thing with the process called "iTunesHelper.exe".
After that, connect the iPod, and follow the steps from the article linked above. The iPod should be listed in the Disk Management window now. It is likely being assigned a drive letter that is the same as a network volume you are connected to named "DATARAID". Change the drive letter to something far down the list, like X:, but first make sure that the letter you are using isn't already assigned to another drive.
After you have changed the drive letter, go into My Computer, look for the X: (or whichever one you chose) drive and right click it, and hit Eject. Once the light on the iPod shuffle stops flashing, disconnect the iPod and restart the computer. After restarting, open iTunes, and reconnect the iPod. It should show up properly now.

  • Charge iPod with the USB cable

When I connect my iPod to a computer whithout iTunes installed, I get a new drive in windows. But on my iPod I get symbol in the display that says that I should not remove the cable before I disconnect the iPod in windows.
In this case the iPod charge until I disconnect the iPod in windows.
When I use iPod with my computer where iTunes is installed, I can press the Eject iPod button in iTunes and the iPod still get power from the USB cable, and the iPod still charge.
Is there any software so can do the same job as in the iTunes for eject iPod? Beacuse then I can charge the iPod with only the usb cable and still listen to the music.

    I would try here first.

  • Steps on Installing iPod Shuffle on Comp that has iPod Mini Installed

I will be getting an iPod Shuffle soon and will be installing it on the same computer that already has my iPod Mini (2nd gen) installed. It's a PC and I'm running XP Home with iTunes version 6.0.1.3. I was just wondering if prior to getting the Shuffle if there are any steps that I should follow when installing it. I understand that there are some issues with muliple iPods so I'm just getting as much info as I can.
I have already read through this document: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300432 and will be trying Method Two. But what the article doesn't tell me is if I should still input the CD that comes with the Shuffle..or if I should just try plugging it in directly when I get it. I'm assuming that I still input the CD and run the Shuffle installation and then when it gets to the iTunes installation I just quit (since I already have iTunes on my computer)?? Is that right?
Are there any detailed steps out there that can provide me with a step-by-step guide of installing two iPods (1 Mini, 1 Shuffle) on the same computer? Thanks in advance!

So you can't manually drop songs into the Shuffle from iTunes (like you can with the Mini)? Are you saying that the preferences have to be set to automatic to get music onto it?
You can move songs to and from the iPod shuffle playlist in iTunes so that only the ones you want on the shuffle appear in that playlist.
Do I not need to format the Shuffle to work with my PC?
The iPod shuffle comes in FAT32 format, and only works as a music player when it is in this format. The iPod nano comes in FAT32 format, but converts itself to HFS+ if the first machine it is plugged into is a Mac.
So, even if I have the 1.4.1 update and 6.0 of iTunes (which I believe are the latest) I can just plug it in without running the install/format from the CD?
    Yes.

  • I cannot sync my ipod via a usb cable

I have bought cheap sync cables in the past that have only worked for bit. So I bought an iWant USB sync and charge cable today and I cannot get my ipod to sync to transfer music across to my ipod touch. The cable seems to be recognised as there is a cable symbol in the battery left meter in the top right of the ipod screen. The sync option is greyed out though in itunes, I'm so frustrated as I have loads of new music in itunes that I now can't listen to. Do I just need a new cable? Is there something wrong with my USB ports? I have restarted my pc/ipod/itunes to no avail. Any advice please>
    Thanks

In iTunes dod you have sync with this iPod over WiFi unchecked?
Try resetting the iPOd, Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
