Explorer 8 & PDF

I am using Windows XP with Explorer 8.  I get a run time error when trying to read PDF files! Is there a fix for Exploader 8?  I have no problem with Firefox reading PDF files.

What version Reader? What OS with service pack?

  • External PDF links in Internet Explorer - PDF/A issue?

    Hi,
I am having an issue with certain links within PDFs not working when the PDF is being viewed with IE.  I have created external PDF links using the Go to a Page View linking feature within Acrobat and then opening an external PDF file and setting the link.  The extrernal links work fine when viewing the PDFs within Acrobat, however when I view the PDFs within IE the external links do not work.  I am running Acrobat 9.3 and IE 8.
I know there is an issue with PDF/A disabling external PDF links, is it possible that IE always displays PDFs in PDF/A mode, even though I have set PDF/A View Mode to never within Acrobat?  Also, I do not remember this being an issue in earlier releases of Acrobat 9, however I am supporting a large group of people that have already updated to Acrobat 9.3 and would hate to have to roll them back. Any ideas as to a possible solution would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Randy

  • How can we improve the (extremely) long loading time of our clickable PDF?

This week the designer of our provincial government delivered a nice clickable PDF. The file wil be loaded on a webpage and the link of that page will be send by email to a stakeholder group. The PDF-file was made in Acrobat X Pro 10.1.3
When testing we discovered major problems when loading the pages of the 3 Mb PDF-file. Depending on the platform uses this can take minutes if is loads at all. Apart from that funny things happen...
    Test 1 - Laptop / Windows 7 / Explorer > PDF doesn't open
    Test 2 - Laptop / Windows 7 / Chrome > buttons in PDF don't work
Test 2a - Laptop / Windows 7 / Chrome again > the first page of the file opens, but with a blue haze
    Test 3 - Desktop PC / Windows 7 / Explorer > PDF works fine
    Test 4 - Desktop PC / Windows 7 / Chrome > buttons in PDF don't work
Test 4a - Desktop PC / Windows 7 / Chrome again > the first page of the file opens, but with a blue haze
Test 5 - Desktop PC / Windows Vista / Explorer > no loading issue, but Explorer crashes when using the PDF
Test 6 - Unknown tablet PC / Android > PDF works fine
Test 7 - iPad 3 tablet PC / Apple OS / Acrobat >  buttons in PDF don't work
So the results are quite alarming. What can we do to guarantee our policy makers a succesful publication next monday?
    We appreciate any suggestion.

Chome, by default, renders PDF files using its own plugin - and that doesn't support as many features as Adobe Reader does.
iOS won't support any interactive elements that use scripting due to the limitations imposed by Apple.
Without seeing the PDF it's hard to say why it's crashing on test 5, as 'clickable' could mean anything. If the stakeholder group have Adobe Reader X installed and are running on a desktop then there shouldn't any problem even with the most complex PDF, but if the PDF uses features specific to the current version and they have an old copy of Reader or a third-party PDF display application,  some things won't work properly. You can persuade them to upgrade by adding a note to the document or the website it's served from, but you can't force them to do it, nor can your webserver detect if they have a suitable application installed or not. The PDF file can, but only if it gets as far as opening.

  • Windows scaling issues with ArcMap 10.2 on rMBP running Windows 8.1

    Hi all,
Sorry if this question is covered elsewhere, I ran a search and didn't find anything useful.
I recently installed Windows 8.1 on my 13'' rMBP late 2013 model using Boot Camp 5.1, along with all the drivers. The install seemed to go fine, and scaling of windows for things like internet explorer, pdfs, etc is appearing normal. However, when I use ArcMap 10.2 the menu items at the top of the window become tiny, see below.
I don't seem to have this problem with a related program (ArcCatalog), so I'm not sure what it could be. I've just tried playing with the settings under Screen Resolution but nothing seems to be working.
If anyone has a solution to this it would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks
    Christine

  • Highlight / Markup features in Windows 8.1 to help at my job

I work in pharmaceutical regulatory affairs and just purchased a Thinkpad Yoga running Windows 8.1; my first touch screen device that is larger than a smart phone. The pen / stylus is aweseome. The features I would like in a PDF reader are as follows:
    - highlighting, and ability to automatically copy those highlights into a note
    - marking up a PDF
I bought this computer so I could take notes during presentations when PDFs are provided beforehand. I want to be able to highlight important content and mark it up using the stylus.
I currently use Acrobat 9 in Windows 7 to read public regulatory documents. For documents, I only highlight, not markup. I highlight in Acrobat 9 and have the Preferences set to automatically copy it to a note. Then I have Javascript that exports the notes to a text file. When I finish reading, I copy the text file contents to Evernote and add the highlighted PDF file as an attachment. So if I'm searching, I can find the important text without having to open the PDF.
Because I have so much to read, I often send the PDF files to my Kindle. In that case, I highlight in Kindle. Then when I finish, I open up the PDF in Acrobat 9 on my computer, and re-highlight each section and then do what I did above. Similarly, if I read it using the Acrobat on my Android phone, I just go back later which is extra time. I've also tried Skitch for Android with Evernote and then likewise, go back later and highlight the PDF in Acrobat. Skitch for Windows doesn't allow marking up of PDF yet. I've tried ezPDF and Foxit, and given them feedback, but there doesn't seem to be an easy way to export highlighted text. I have not explored PDF Touch which I think costs.
I would love for these features to be available so I don't have to go back to my Windows 7 computer to make up for deficiencies in the Windows 8 one to highlight text, export that text, and mark up PDF documents that I read, and presentations that I attend.

This week l am at a conference and  Since slides were provided, I got to try all my PDF tools and identify which was best. It ended up being the Windows 8.1 Reader.
First I tried the Acrobat XI trial. While document exporting of highlighted test was great, marking up the PDF using my stylus was severely lacking.  I could not write letters and have it see anything. The Reader was great for capturing my notes on the slides. The only negative aspects were no Undo, and no way to change pen colors.  When speakers old not provide slides, fused One Note which was the BEST at  capturing, my handwriting. And it could change colors and Undo. However, you can't insert slides into One Note and have it come out with the correct orientation.  I'm really glad I tried out Aerobat XI. l really liked the comment exporting but due to inability to use the poncho properly handwrite, I will pass on buying and stuck to my Acrobat 9.0 on my other computer. I really hope Acrobat  will improve sensing digital pens and I will be ready to buy.

  • Acrobat 7 vs Designer 7

    Hello,
i created my first form (survey) in Adobe Designer 7.0.
There are some dynamic forms in the survey so my website visitors will need
to download Acrobat Reader 7.0 to fill in the survey.
Now I inserted an image of acrobat reader in my form on which I would like
to make a link to the acrobat download page.
    I've got 3 questions:
    1. How can I make a link on an image to another website. I just can't find
anything about it. I can't imagine that such a simple feature isn't possible
    in Designer.
    2. I think I can also make forms directly in Acrobat Professional 7.0. I
read that if it is designed in Acrobat 7 then visitors can use any version
of acrobat reader to fill in the form. But when I click "make new form" in
Acrobat 7 then the software automatically opens Designer. Can I avoid that
in any way; so that I can design forms in Acrobat Prof 7 instead of Designer
(without erasing Designer of my pc of course).
    3. Is it correct that forms made with Designer can only be viewed and filled
in with acrobat reader 6 and 7 and not with older versions of acrobat
reader? What if I don't use dynamic items in my forms? Will they be able to
use any acrobat reader version to fill in Designer forms?
I need these answers urgently. So many thanks for your kind help.
    Many regards
    Tuur

Actually i have the same problem, imported a normal pdf-file
with a lot of metadata, create the form and all metadata
    were gone...
Adobe Designer is able to work with XMP, just have a look at
the XML Source of the form. There you can see that Designer
captures all PDF metadata. All XMP metadata that Designer
adds to the PDF form is stored at the end of the XML
structure, all additions will be ignored.
But there are two ways to get your metadata back:
    - add it manually through windows explorer pdf file
    properties dialog
    or
    - export a xmp file out of the original pdf and import it to
the pdf form with help of Adobe Bridge
Very crazy, i think Adobe should fix this soon with just a
    simple update...
    With kind regards

  • Acrobat X Pro 10.1 - Can't copy windows folders - Locked

Having a major issue with Adobe Acrobat and explorer.
If I download a PDF file and try to move it, I get the error:
"Destination Folder Access Denied" you need permission to perform this action. (I am Administrator level).
Especially if I am using the Windows preview panel at all.
If I use "Lockhunter" to see what is locking the file, it tells me "explorer.exe" and I cannot move the file unless I unlock it. If I unlock it and try to move it again, it fails once again, because it has been immediately locked and left locked again! There is a windows "unblock" option (shown after downloading a file from the internet) but unblocking the file makes do difference.
It only appears to do this with PDF files. How do I resolve this issue? Cheers.

Wierd thing is Bill, I just tried something.
If I try to say move a folder with a PDF file in it, from one location to another, I get the "Error, open in another program" error message. Yet I can go into that folder and cut and paste the PDF file somewhere else with no problem. THEN it actually allows me to move the folder (so moving the PDF file somehow "unlocks" the folder).
If I then try to move the folder again (after the folder and the PDF inside it have been moved) the "new" folder is now locked.
For a folder to become locked, it just has to have a PDF inside it. I don't even have to select the PDF, go into the folder with PDF in it, have it open in the preview panel, or even open it in Adobe Acrobat). All I have to do is select a folder with a PDF inside it, for that folder to become immediately locked. It's like something is scanning the contents of the folder (as soon as I select it), figuring out it contains a PDF file and then locking that folder as a process thread of "explorer.exe" and not allowing it to be cut and pasted somewhere else. But yet, still allowing me to cut and paste the PDF inside the folder and then freeing up the folder its moved from and locking the folder it's moved to!!
    Infuriating.
I wonder if Adobe's PDF Windows Desktop Search PDF contents extension could be doing this? Still, why is it only doing it to the folder with a PDF in it I select. It has to be some kind of adobe explorer / pdf shell extension. Don't even know where to start trying to figure it out.

  • XDP post blows up IE

I've got a dynamic PDF form created with Designer 7.0 that will be populated via Reader v7.0.7. I will be capturing four fields via an XDP post and driving that data to a back-end database application with an ASP page. Here's my problem: when the PDF file is opened within Internet Explorer (PDF file will be hosted on the intranet) the XDP post generates a failure in one of the Reader DLL files. However, when that same file (from the intranet site) is opened in Reader *outside* of the IE environment, the XDP post works beautifully.
I know the issue lies somewhere with what has all been installed within the IE environment, as I have a generic VMWare session with Reader v7.0.7 installed that *does* post successfully from IE. Unfortunately, it's not realistic to expect my user community to have a generic IE configuration....especially when the user population exceeds a few hundred PCs.
Any help that this group can provide will be MOST appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Paul

It would appear that we figured the issue out on our own. Turns out that within the Pre-Submit event of our button we make an xfa.host.print call. This call was the 'standard' context that comes along with the PRINT button from the library, i.e. it launches the print dialog box based on the first "1" setting in the config parameters. Unfortunately, IE doesn't like that print dialog...it wants to print silently right to the default printer. We changed the "1" to a "0" and we have had MUCH better success.
Hope this saves someone as much headache and questioning of the platform as we expended in the last 24 hours. ;)

  • HP 1022 networked - only printing within some applications

I can print fine to a networked HP 1022 within Internet Explorer, pdf files and Novell Groupwise messages, but when printing a Word document, excel spreadsheet, Notepad file I get a page of thin horizontal lines covering the entire page. Cannot print any output from Firefox, cannot send a test print from the printer properties section. Have tried reinstalling, clearing que, restarting, etc. No clue what to try next. Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
When you created the exe did you enable it as a ActiveX server? If so you can use ActiveX steps to comunicated with it. It would be easier however to call the VI from Teststand if that is possible as you can pass values directly too and from the VI connector pane through the LabVIEW adapter.

  • Reader not opening files in IE

When browsing with internet explorer, PDF files will not open.  get the little "x" in top left of field.  I;ve run the repair program, checked add ons and it is enabled.  Using Mcafee, but I don't see that it is blocking ir, or maybe I just dont know how to check that.  Any help is appreciated.

Under Manage add-ons (All add-ons), do you see Adobe PDF Reader, and is it enabled?

  • Thumbnails for 64bit Windows 7. It is now 2009.

I have been running 64-bit desktop operating systems for 5 years now (yes I started late) including Windows XP 64-bit, Windows Vista 64-bit and now Windows 7 64-bit. For 5 years I have been reading people's posts all over the internet, asking when Adobe will make pdf thumbnail previews in explorer available in a 64-bit environment. (I have also been listening to people screaming for a 64-bit flashplayer for 5 years now).
I have heard many people try to blame it on Windows, but we all know that this is not the case. pdf documents created or downloaded on a 32-bit machine (of any flavour) and then transfered to a 64-bit machine, WILL display as a thumbnail in explorer. pdf documents created or downloaded on a 64-bit machine (of any flavour) WILL NOT display as a thumbnail in explorer.
Like I say, I have only been following this for 5 years now.
Being able to see thumbnails of your pdfs is quite possibly the simplest, and yet one of the most important functions of either acrobat or reader to so amny people.
Can anybody tell me when Adobe will start to support 64-bit operating systems?
After all, it is now 2009 and very nearly 2010.

  • How to install Adobe PDF toolbar in Internet Explorer after uninstalling IE 10 and installing IE 9

Hello.  I need help installing Adobe PDF convert web page to pdf toolbar to my Internet Explorer 9.  I uninstalled Internet Explorer 11 and 10 because I could not open pdf files in IE 10 or 11 -- trying to open pdf documents froze/locked up Internet Explorer and I had to use Task Manager to exit Internet Explorer every time I tried opening a pdf document.  I have downgraded to IE 9 with the hope that I will have better luck.
I am using Windows 7 operating system.  I have Adobe Acrobat X Pro installed on my computer.
Now that I downgraded to IE 9, I've lost the Adobe convert web page to pdf toolbar.  It is not even in my choice of add ons in Internet Explorer when I go to Manage Add Ons.  How do I get the Adobe toolbar add on back?
I lost my Adobe Acrobat X Pro disk so do not have that to help me in any way.  What can I do?
    Your help is greatly appreciated!

If it is an issue of the AA X disk, you can download from http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-downloads.html. Be sure to create a replacement CD in case it is not available in the future. You will still need your S/N for any reinstall. You can usually get that from the Adobe site as long as you registered Acrobat (http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/find-serial-number.html).

  • Firefox will not download journal articles (PDFs) from PubMed. Why? Internet Explorer will download them.

I go to the USC e-journals, as I have done with Firefox for years. Now, when I find a journal article that I want and try to download it, nothing happens. I get a blank screen.
If I use Internet Explorer, I can download the article (PDF) and print and save it.
What do I need to do in Firefox to fix the problem. When I first uploaded the newest Firefox I did not have this problem.

Hi Joe, some other users have reported that the Real Downloader is not working in Firefox 22. If you have updated it and it still doesn't work, you might consider using a different downloader. I don't have any personal recommendations on that, but you can check out the reviews on the add-ons site:
