Exploring Solaris 10 x86

I am exploring the option of replacing all of my older sparc workstations with Solaris 10 x86. We are currently in the testing and learning phase. So far I think it is pretty cool.
My problem for the moment is that I have engineers who compile and run code on our existing Sparc server. Since I am just learning my way around Solaris 10, I want to be sure that I am correct in my assumption that code compiled on a sparc system will not run on a Solaris 10 PC.
So..basically does anyone know with Solaris 10 x86 does it run Sparc compiled programs and or will it run shared out applications or not? Is there some feature within this new version that makes this work? With my current setup of sparc workstations, there is no problem mounting the shares from the home and using the workstation CPU to do the work. It would be great if it could still work the same but with an x86 workstation.
If not I'll have to work on my boss to buy the PC version of SUN's compiler.
Thanks!!!!

Yeh...Im already giving him quotes. :)
Another question. I have Fedora on a Dell PC with a Dell mouse with a center scroll button. On that system I can use the center button as a 3rd button were I am able to cut and paste with the buttons.
However, I cannot seem to get the same functionality to work on the Solaris 10 running on Dell hardware. The scroll will work but wont work as a 3rd button if pressed like it does on the linux box. Is anyone using Dell with a Dell mouse and figured out how to get the mouse to work as 3 buttons? I've tried several selections by running kdmconfig, but nothing changes. Any ideas or can anyone point me to some documentation??
Thanks!!

  • Solaris 10(x86) u4 8/07 Upgrade Install trashes disk label

In 4 attempts now to upgrade a working Solaris 10(x86) u2 6//06 system to Solaris 10 8/07 the upgrade fails. If the system reboots at the end of the upgrade, the system is stuck at the grub prompt. When options are set to NOT reboot at the end of the install, inspection of the system produces:
    - I/O errors with df command for /a and /a/var (see next point for why)
    - using format command to inspect partition table reveals that an "effectively empty" label with zero length slices for s0,s1,s3-s7 has been written to the disk effectively trashing the installation and the previously defined partition layout.
This upgrade failure occurs if using a non-upgraded 6/06 install or a fully updated install. The 6/06 install is partitioned with partitions for /, swap, /var, and /export/home. The system I am trying to upgrade is a test system (laptop with 768MB) and is basically a fresh install of 6/06. I am trying to define and validate the procedure to upgrade a 6/06 system to 8/07.
I have not explored using Live Upgrade yet as I suspect the same problem will occur to the target if the fault lies in the installer on the DVD.
Has anyone experienced this issue and can anyone point me in the right direction to remedy this failure?

  • Solaris 9 x86 and AHA 19160

I tried unsuccessfully last night to load my system with Solaris 9 x86. After accepting a plain VGA setting for my 64MB GeForce AGP video card, I was stopped in my tracks by a divide by zero error when the installer was searching for target drives. Even though the previous hardware scans had picked up a SCSI controller, it appears that the default Adaptec driver does not work with a 19160 (Ultra 160) controller.
I was advised that Volume 2 has some boot diskette images which might hold the key. Does anyone know if an Adaptec 19160 controller is supported? Also, is there an Nvidia driver I can use to esacape VGA purgatory? I ran out of wall clock before I was able to explore volume 2.
    Thanks

I have the same NIC (RTL 8029 chip), and.. the solution 4 you. :) I made this quick guide for me, so I can add netwotk support to my system, very easily. Happy to see that another person needs that info.
    Follow these steps:
    1. Download the file from the link below, put it at /, and unzip it.
    ftp://sun.drydog.com/pub/solaris/nei-i86pc-solaris5.7.zip
    2. Run (from command line) the command:
    add_drv /kernel/drv/nei; devlinks
    3. Create the file /kernel/drv/nei.conf and write
    name="nei" parent="isa" reg=1,0xe800,0x1f interrupts=5;
(this is the hardware address for my card, you should find your's).
    4. Create the file /etc/hostname.nei0, whick will contain the line
    192.168.0.1
(this is the IP addr. I use for my internal network, change that to any other reserved addr. you like, like 10.0.0.1)
    5. If you use IPv6, create /etc/hostname6.nei0 ,too, with the same contents as hostname.nei0
    192.168.0.1
    6. Edit /etc/hosts and add the line:
    192.168.0.1 myname.mydomain
    7. Edit /etc/inet/hosts and make the file look like this:
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    192.168.0.1 myname.mydomain loghost
    8. Edit /etc/inet/netmasks and put:
    192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0
    9. Run from command line mode or from a terminal:
    /usr/sbin/drvconfig -i nei
    10. Run from command line mode or from a terminal:
    touch /reconfigure; /usr/sbin/reboot
    11. After rebooting, type "ifconfig nei0 plumb" to make sure the device was recognized.
It should show up in the output from typing "prtconf"
Normally, now you can use your RTL8029 card.
    I hope I help a little bit mate. :)

  • IE5 on Solaris 10 x86

This may invoke some violent responses, but i need to run some version of MS Internet Explorer on a Solaris 10 workstation. The workstation needs to access a web app that only runs on IE.
I found out that MS used to provide a UNIX port of IE, but its been pulled, besides that was for SPARC only(?).
Does anyone have IE running on Solaris 10 x86, and if so could they point me in the right direction?
    Thanks

    Check out Crossover Office...
    http://www.codeweavers.com/
A former coworker used it to run IE on his JDS
    desktop... it was pretty funny.
Looks like they support Solaris now too.I exchanged emails with Jeremy White of CodeWeavers about running CrossOver Office on Solaris. I ran it on Red Hat successfully years ago. His response said:
"However, the bad news is that the existing product won't work for your Opterons (and is a bit long in the tooth besides), and we don't yet have the pure Solaris product available yet.
To be candid, we're waiting until we have a more clear sense that it's worth it. It's not a ton of work (I mentally think of it as being $100K/year for us to develop + support), but we just haven't seen evidence that the demand is strong enough yet.
We're hoping that Sun will help to get us off the fence, but they move so slowly that I fear that hope may be in vain.".
If somebody has run Crossover Office on X86 Solaris I would like to hear about it.

  • Steps to Install Oracle 9i on Solaris 8 X86

I am eager to explore Solaris. As a first step I have installed Solaris 8. Now I need to install Oracel 9i on
    Solaris.
I have very less knowledge on Solaris...
Can somebody help out in this.

Unfortunately no chance. 9i was never supported on Solaris x86 and is desupported now on all other platforms. Use 10gR2 instead.

I have been Solaris 10 x86 on my Intel machines and never had any problem with SMC. However, things seems to have changed since
nv-b40 release. SMC out-of-the-box does not work even the first time. I get a message like Server is not running, Toolbox is not available. I tried to start the server manually using the command

    and I got the message
svccfg:Pattern 'application/swcwbem' doesn't match any instances or services.
I have reinstalled nv-b38 and SMC works fine. Does any one know what has changed between nv-b38 and nv-b40 releases which caused SMC not to work out-of-the-box? Also, if any one has encountered this problem and got a fix for it, could you please post it here? Thanks a bunch in advance.

I had similar problems several months ago. I suspect this happens when host pc does not have floppy drive(or bios somehow misreports it) as it was in my case. Solaris 8 seems to work fine in the same environment, so I keep using it for now. Possible workaround might be to use DCA from Solaris 8: Installation of Sol9 started just fine after I entered Sol8 DCA and asked it to boot from Sol9 CD.
Hope this problem will be fixed in subsequent Sol9 releases.

Here are some additional statements for 10g on Solaris 10g x86:
    1. Execute runInstaller with the -ignoreSysPrereqs option.
    2. Select 'Do not create a starter database' when installing Oracle 10g.
    3. During installation, the warning message 'SUNWsprox package not installed' can be ignored. Press Continue to resume the installation.
    4. Download and install patch 4186426 from metalink.oracle.com after installing Oracle 10g software.
    5. If you have an End User Solaris 10 distribution, install the SUNWuiu8 package prior to installing the 10g client.

  • Solaris 9 x86 bug report - el_GR.ISO8859-7 & CDE

I'm posting this article here, because I can't find any official Solaris 9 x86 bug report page. I hope the developers will notice it. I'm using Solaris 9 x86 (12/02), with the latest 9_x86_Recommended patch cluster installed, and support for Greek installed too.
It seems there is some kind of problem, when trying to view text files with Greek (el_GR.ISO8859-7) characters, which were created under Windows. To be more specific:
If I boot at CDE with language el_GR.ISO8859-7, and try to view a .txt file (just with a simple double click), which I have created under Windows, with Greek characters,
the screen goes black, and the CDE login screen appears again (restarts). If I keep the Greek language or change the language to US English, I can boot at CDE again, with
no problems. If I try "command line logging", the screen goes off - just like when the computer is powered off, and I can't do anything, (well, except pressing the reset button, that's the sure way). And if I use the "init 6" command, while being logged at CDE, from a terminal, the Graphical Desktop exits, and then, the screen goes off again (just like the computer is powered off), but finally the computer manages to restart.
I'm using the Sun X server, NOT the XFree86 porting kit and I use the entry

  • Several mysterious problems with Solaris 11 x86 install

    Hi folks,
I've recently installed Solaris 11 x86 as a replacement for Solaris 9 SPARC on an Ultra 2 machine. I like the operating system, but I've promptly acquired some mysterious problems. The computer is a Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo E2500 with a Pentium 4 HT 3.06 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, an 80 GB SATA disk and a 147 GB SCSI disk.
I have had a few occasions on which the screen goes totally blank, the monitor claims that there is no signal, and I have to restart the machine. However, with the blank screen, the hard drive activity light is sometimes still flashing. This happens predictably when I try to log off (as opposed to shutting down) and when I use Totem media player and click on anything inside the Totem window. The motherboard has built-in graphics and brief specifications can be found here:
    http://uk.ts.fujitsu.com/rl/servicesupport/techsupport/professionalpc/ESPRIMO/Datasheets/ds_esprimo_edition_e2500.pdf
Yesterday my PS/2 keyboard started causing the motherboard to beep crazily when I use it. It beeps rapidly 4 times, then prints the expected character. However, the problem doesn't occur at the initial log in screen. The mouse cursor has also gone beserk on one occasion, flying all over the screen (I had this problem with a previous PC, but a different OS, and thought it was a hardware fault, which I why I got this new computer). With the keyboard problem, the machine is basically unusable. However, it is configured as a dual boot machine, and the keyboard problem isn't present with Windows XP.
There are also a few smaller, odd problems. Occasionally all the icons vanish from my Gnome desktop. The command prompt also mysteriously changed from $chris@pluto to $bash-4.1 just before the keyboard problem appeared, although that might have had something to do with me copying my home directory to a different disk and editing the /etc/auto_home file (moving the home directory worked fine). Also, unlike with Solaris 9 SPARC, I find that I have to have external SCSI devices switched on at boot time, should I want to use them later. That's a pain. With Solaris 9, I could run "boot -r" when I first attached the device, then switch on the SCSI devices and mount them whenever I wanted.
After the useful advice I received here about "more" and "less", I thought I'd post these problems and see if anyone can help. I'd really appreciate some advice. Can anyone identify likely causes for these problems? Which problems can I expect to solve and which do I have to live with?
    Many thanks,
    Chris Tidy

  • Install EM 10g Grid Control on  Solaris 10 x86

    Hi all
I need to install Enterprise Manager 10g Grid Control Release 2 on Solaris 10 x86 platform.
I found out the following link where I can download the software:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/oem/index.html
Howerver it seems that there isn't any download for my platform. Does anybody know where can I find the software?
How can I configure EM Grid Control on that platform if I don't have the software. Does anybody know a manual installation and configuration method?
    King regard and thank you
    Aron

That means it is not yet available for 10.2, but it is for 10.1

    Hi.
    Are You read documentation ?

Guidelines for the /globaldevices File System
Oracle Solaris Cluster software offers two choices of locations to host the global-devices namespace:
    A lofi device
A dedicated file system on one of the local disks
This section describes the guidelines for using a dedicated partition. This information does not apply if you instead host the global-devices namespace on a lofi.
The /globaldevices file system is usually located on your root disk. However, if you use different storage on which to locate the global-devices file system, such as a Logical Volume Manager volume, it must not be part of a Solaris Volume Manager shared disk set or part of a VxVM disk group other than a root disk group. This file system is later mounted as a UFS cluster file system. Name this file system /globaldevices, which is the default name that is recognized by the scinstall(1M) commandSo:
    >I have mounted one (1) common 2gb LUN for both the nodes, so it is creating the problem...?
    It source of problem.
Every node require have it's own separate slice for globaldevice.
Shared Lun can be mounted with option global for access from both nodes at same time, but it will be second step - configure data-services.
    Regards.

  • Solaris 8 x86 and 10 x86 differences

I have a device driver that works on Solaris 8 x86. I installed this same device driver on a box with Solaris 10 x86. Under Solaris 10 x86 I get a message "WARNING: minor name <tec
_0> is not compatible network driver name <tec>". Also, opening the device under Solaris 10 x86 will cause the OS to quit responding. Where can I find a list of differences between Solaris 8 x86 and Solaris 10 x86?
    Thanks.
    David

Another way to install Matrox G550 is to Install AcceleratedX from www.xig.com
It supports a lot of graphic card and it also supports hardware acceleration for OpenGL
BUt obviously its not free :(

  • Solaris Management Console (SMC) - Solaris 9 x86

Ive just installed Solaris 9 (x86) version. Im unable to install Solaris Management console.
I was using below command to add listed patches:
pkgadd -d . SUNWpmgr SUNWrmui SUNWlvmr SUNWlvma SUNWlvmg
Im unable to find these packages on cd1. Somehow theyre on cd2. These cds are direct extract from Suns web site.
Anyway when I run the pkgadd command Im getting the following error:
    No package associated with (SUNWpmgr)
When I look into the SUNWpmgr, there are 2 files (pkgmap., pkginfo.) and 3 dir (install, archive, reloc)
    Same with other packages
    Please help me.

I was able to correct this problem on my server
The .server file is the smc java keystore that contains
the private/public key pair for SSL
You can create this file by executing
    cd /usr/sadm/lib/smc/bin
    certtool -genkey
Once the keys are generated execute
    /etc/init.d/init.wbem stop
    /etc/init.d/init.wbem start
if your smpatch no longer works
take a look at the following article
    http://sunsolve.sun.com/pub-cgi/show.pl?target=patches/spfaq
