Exploring Windows Server 2012 R2. I need to know how to enable system restore, though.

I've gone about exploring the Datacenter edition to determine if it's right for what I need it for as a home server. However, I want to have a plan for when something goes wrong that might require a system restore, but that refreshing or resetting Windows
Server entirely would be overdoing it. I discovered two Group Policy settings pertaining to SR and properly configured them to attempt to get System Restore up and running, but unfortunately to no avail. What can I do?

System restore is not available in server builds. You are supposed to install and use windows server backup feature instead.

  • Windows Server 2012 , File Share, need to create CNAME but not working

I'm doing a file server migration for an old Netapp and I'm moving all the data to a Windows Server 2012 Standard System.  I need to be able to have 3+ cnames for the system so I don't impact existing clients.  I have read the below
articles and none of them are working.
Currently I'm getting the following error
"The Mapped Network drive could not be created because the following error occurred"
"The target account name is incorrect"
So I have tried the following without any luck, and these fixes below are supposed to work on Window 2008R2, but they don't on Server 2012
    1) use DisableStrictNameChecking registry value
    2) use netdom to create another hostname that is bound to the server,  netdom computername (mysystem) /Add (newsystemname)
    3) I used setspn to create an alternative name for the system
    4) tried disabling SMB3
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, I'm sure this is possible just down know now.
    Jason

Why don't you just go into DNS and create multiple records for the same IP address?
Or, if you like trying more complicated paths, install DFS and use its distributed naming capability.  It can have many, many different names.

  • I need to find a Windows Server that suits my needs (one that I can physically own, not rent from an online service

I am currently running my servers on my gaming PC (Intel i7 3rd gen core processor, 8gb RAM, 1tb hard drive), but I can't game with all the servers up. But what I can do is keep the server I'm playing on up. I often have to shut
them down every weekend because I go over to my grandparents house. So basically I need to know what the cheapest server that I can build, buy, buy NOT rent). It has to be able to run a WAMP Server (HTTP, PHP, MySQL), a Filezilla Server (FTP), a Minecraft
Server (Java), and a Garry's Mod Server (Steam). I already have them set up and ready to go, all I have to do is put them on a USB (which I have, 8gb to be exact). The servers are currently exclusive to the admins that are building the server, and will be
public when the time comes that we are ready. I already know how to manage them, I know how to port forward, etc. If it is possible, I would like the server to be a Windows Server, I’ve had experience with Windows 95, 98, ME, Vista, and of course, Windows
7 and 8. Unfortunately never got the know what it was like to have NT, but not to get off track. If anyone has any information, please reply. Thank you, if anyone is interested in playing on the Minecraft Server, Garry's Mod Server, etc, please PM me, I would
love to hear from the people who might have really made this (Hopefully lag free) server possible!

    Hi,
Thanks for posting in the forum.
If you want to build up a Windows Server 2012 R2 machine, I suggest you could refer to the system requirements in the following article. Please understand that this is only the estimated system
requirements for the Windows Server 2012 R2, actual requirements will vary based on your system configuration and the applications and features you install. I suggest you could contact your local reseller for details about that. Thanks for your
    understanding.

  • 1. Will CAL Licenses works if i use Windows Server 2012? 2. What GB of RAM can be used with Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition?

I have been using Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition for my business purpose and there are at-least 30 Users who logged in into the server Via Remotely from different location. I want to upgrade my server with latest one with some extra cores and RAM for
better and smooth operations for all users. So, i have a doubt whether my CAL Licenses will works with Windows Server 2012 or i need to purchase the new one for the same?
Moreover, if i don't upgrade my Windows to any 2012 edition and stay on 2008 Standard Edition how much maximum RAM can be installed at a time? is there any limitations? if Yes, please let me know how do i upgrade my Windows 2008 Standard Edition to any other
business edition to avoid such limitations of RAM?
Waiting for your favorable and quick response.

    Hi again,
th eupgrade optiuon from Standard 2008 to Enterprise 2008 was only available for customers with open value contract with activ esoftware assurance then they can purchase the step up license from Standard to Enterprise.
the only way to have the Enterprise 2008 Edition is to make th edowngrad efrom 2012 Standard to 2008 Enterprise. it means that if you purchase the 2012 R2 Standard Edition, you may downgarde to Enterprise 2008/2008 R2. th ebest way to make the downgrade
to 2008 R2 Enterprise is to purchase the current Version 2012 R2 Standard in volume licensing than you can download diretly from VLSC the Enterprise Edition.
with your downgrade you can still using the 2008 CALs.
    thanks

  • RelayState parameter is full support with ADFS in Windows Server 2012?

We have implement Single Sign-On with ADFS. (Service Provider - salesforce.com , identity provider - ADFS). When we authenticate with ADFS it will
authenticate successfully, but it will redirected to salesforce full site instead of mobile site. Salesforce document mentioned that we need to handle RelayState parameter on ADFS. And I saw some article mentioned that 'RelayState' parameter is not fully support
for Windows Server 2012. Please let us know Windows Server 2012 is fully support for the 'RelayState' parameter and if it is how to handle it on ADFS. Thanks.

  • SQL Server 2012 Standard compatibility with Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard

    Hi,
Is SQL Server 2012 Standard compatibility with Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard.
In volume licensing portal Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard is not provided in the list of OS supported for SQL server 2012.

    Hi Ajit,
Besides other post, please also note that
    Service Pack 1 or
a later update is needed for the support of SQL 2012 on Windows Server 2012 R2.
For more details about how to use SQL Server in Windows Server 2012 R2, please review the following KB article.

  • ACS 4.1 support with Windows Server 2012 Domain controller

I am upgrading my Domain Controller / Active Directory from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2012.
In my environment, I am using Cisco ACS 4.1 which is integrated with Windows Server 2003 Active Directory.
Will ACS4.1 will work fine with my new domain controller (Windows server 2012) or I need to upgrade my ACS too?
    Regards,
    Junaid

    Junaid,
ACS 4.x code doesn't even support Windows 2008 R2. Your best bet is to migrate the ACS from 4.x to ACS 5.4 Patch 2 or stay with windows 2003 or 2008 (Non-R2).
ACS 5.4 patch 2 supports Windows 2012 AD.

Can you elaborate on the question a bit? You're asking how we setup LVM on a Windows Server, but that depends a lot on what the server is for.
Maybe you can clarify your question and I can assist.
