Export 72dpi - big file, small pixellated image!

I have a 12MP RAW file from a 5D Mk1. I've cropped the top and bottom off (group shot short and wide) and I'm trying to export it although I've got a much bigger TIFF file (39MP) and it's very pixellated and 72dpi when I zoom in. Is this correct?

"DPI" is a term which mostly only applies to exporting and mostly for purposes of printing.
Images displayed on your screen are scaled based on the zoom factor you choose (or you can display them in 'actual size' if you want to see a one-to-one mapping of each pixel in the image is mapped to a pixel on your screen.  DPI is ignored.
When you 'export' an image, you have the option to specify DPI based on how you plan to use the image.  By default, images are exported based on pre-defined presets
e.g. "full size" means that every pixel is exported - regardless of DPI -- you get all of them, no matter how many there are.
e.g. "50% size" means the image will be rescaled to half as many pixels wide by half as many pixels tall.  Again, DPI really has no meaning here.
e.g. "fit within 1024x1024" means that the "longest" side of the image will be scaled to fit within 1024 and the "short" size will be scaled proportionately (unless your original image really was square -- like that of a Hasselblad or Rollei medium format film camera.)
But you could export an image and say you want an 8 x 10 at 300dpi.  If the image doesn't doesn't have the exact number of pixels required for your width & height and requested resolution, then Aperture will re-sample the image to create an approximation of the image in the new size you require.  This way when it is printed... at 300dpi... it really will be 8" x 10" on the printer.
DPI is handy (even if it's a conceptual value and not a real thing) because it allows you to more accurately output an image to a specific device -- especially when it's a variable resolution device like a printer.  For example if you want to display an image on the web, but you want it to be a 4 x 6 image, you could export 4 x 6 at 72dpi because most monitors are 72dpi.  When the image is displayed elsewhere, it will probably be pretty close to the size you requested.  If, on the other hand, you need to create a print and you want an 8 x 10, you could ask for 300dpi.  While most printers can do better, 300dpi looks pretty good.  If you were to ask for a 16 x 20" print at 1200dpi, Aperture would have to resample the image and invent a lot of data (average or interpolate the missing data) because there's no way your camera _really_ takes 460 megapixel images, but 28 megapixels.... a high end camera might just do that (16x20 at 300dpi = 28.8 megapixels.)
BTW, Aperture wont crop the image automatically... so if you ask for a size that doesn't match the aspect ratio of the image, you'll probably need to select how you want to crop the image so that it's new aspect ratio matches the print size you want.

  • Pixelated images when exporting from Lightroom

I recently switched from A Windows PC to the MBP Retina 15". I imported photos to lightroom from my external hard drive in RAW format to lightroom, edited then exported firstly as jpeg resized to 630 x 420 at 150 dpi. The images came out pixelated so I tried exporting at 300dpi even though the images are for web use. They still came out pixelated. So I tried exporting as .tif files at 300 dpi and still they are coming out pixelated... does anyone know why this would be? The raw files don't look pixelated at all.

    PART I
Viewed at 100%, I see no "pixelation" or any other distortion of any kind whatsoever.
Only a 100% view (1:1) shows you your true image.  At smaller percentage views, pixels have to be discarded; at greater percentages pixels have to be made up (invented) by the software.
With the Retina screen you're bound to see very strange things, unless you're using the latest and greatest versions of Photoshop and of your video card, and utilizing the Retina features of the software.
    PART II
JPEG is a lousy, lossy format for maintaining image quality.  Every single time you open or create and save a JPEG, the image quality deteriorates, no exceptions.  Even at the highest quality of compression.
To take a very low resolution JPEG, like you did, and subject it to such a massive enlargement is to ask for demand trouble.  Not only are you also magnifying all the JPEG compression artifacts, but you are "inventing" an inordinate amount of pixels.
If you have to enlarge your images often, start with an image file that has NEVER been a JPEG.
    PART III
Photoshop performed superbly in your case.  That is a remarkably fine enlargement, especially considering the miserly JPEG you started from.  Rejoice!

  • Do not know how big or small items in image will be after being printed out

I have just started using photoshop to develop some designs that are meant to be printed on fabric. And then sewn into dresses
While I know how to change the size and scale of the image and canvas. I can not tell how big or small the objects or different elements in the pattern will be when printed out.
For example if I want to have a certain part of the pattern appear on the shoulder of a dress and another on the hem, how do I ensure that they are printed at the right size and in the right place.
I tried printing out one pattern on a meter of fabric and it turn out that it was too big and most of the design will be cut in the process of making the dress. I have no way to determine the dimensions.
Is there a way where I can place a dress outline over an image to check it out or size the individual items inside?
    Thank you

can place a dress outline over an image to check it out or size the individual items inside?
Do you have the cut in digital form (vector or pixels)?

You're welcome, and thank you for the reply.
    2) Yesterday I made the subclips with the In-Out Points and Command-U, the benefit is that I've seen the clip before naming it. Now I'm using markers, it's benefit is that I can write comment and (the later) clip name at once, the drawback is that I have to view to the next shot's beginning before knowing what the shot contains.
But now I found out that I can reconnect my clips independently to the format I converted the master clip to. I reconnected the media to the original AVI file and it worked, too! The more I work with, the more I'm sold on it... - although it doesn't seem to be able to read and use the date information within the DV AVI.
    1) Ok, I tried something similar within FCE. Just worked, but the file size still remains. Which codec settings should I use? Is the export to DV in MOV with a quality of 75% acceptable for both file size and quality? Or would be encoding as H.264 with best quality an option for archiving, knowing that I have to convert it back to DV if I (maybe) wan't to use it for editing later? Or anything else?
    Thank's in advance again,
    André

  • The export operation failed to create an image file

I've been experiencing bizarre behavior when attempting to export images to my Usb-connected card reader. After reading some threads on this form, I was convinced that my reader was defective. Same problem on a brand-new reader.
The specific behavior was as follows: I attempted to export roughly 150 custom-named 500 KB image files to the memory card. The last 15 or so failed to transfer and I got the message, "the export operation failed to create an image file for the versions identified below."
Trashing VP list didn't help. What did was changing the custom name. There was nothing particularly unusual about the original custom name and the new one was virtually identical. After changing the name, the export worked without a hitch.
Has anyone experienced similar behavior? Any ideas what's going on?

problem was that the NEW card reader was faulty as well. My luck!

Hi! Why is the version file smaller than the original file, although I didn't make changes in the file? And why is the keywords don't exporting with original files?

Wild guess: you're using the the wrong export settings. You'll need to tell us more before we can help you - like the export settings you're usng, the size and format of the originals etc.

Not sure if this will help, but what is your inDesign file's "Transparency Blend Space" set to? It's under the edit menu.
Also, when you are placing your images, are you selecting "Show Import Options" and making any selections there?

Kindly help me out wheather i am right or wrong and why.

With respect to performance i guess Big file tablespace is a better option
    Why ?
If you allow me to post, I would like to paste the below text from my first reply's doc link please :
"Performance of database opens, checkpoints, and DBWR processes should improve if data is stored in bigfile tablespaces instead of traditional tablespaces. However, increasing the datafile size might increase time to restore a corrupted file or create a new datafile."
    Regards
    Girish Sharma
    Girish,
I find it interesting that I've never found any evidence to support the performance claims - although I can think of reasons why there might be some truth to them and could design a few tests to check. Even if there is some truth in the claims, how significant or relevant might they be in the context of a database that is so huge that it NEEDS bigfile tablespaces ?
Database opening:  how often do we do this - does it matter if it takes a little longer - will it actually take noticeably longer if the database isn't subject to crash recovery ?  We can imagine that a database with 10,000 files would take longer to open than a database with 500 files if Oracle had to read the header blocks of every file as part of the database open process - but there's been a "delayed open" feature around for years, so maybe that wouldn't apply in most cases where the database is very large.
Checkpoints: critical in the days that a full instance checkpoint took place on the log file switch - but (a) that hasn't been true for years, and (b) incremental checkpointing made a big difference the I/O peak when an instance checkpoint became necessary, and (c) we have had a checkpoint process for years (if not decades) which updates every file header when necessary rather than requiring DBWR to do it
DBWR processes: why would DBWn handle writes more quickly - the only idea I can come up with is that there could be some code path that has to associate a file id with an operating system file handle of some sort and that this code does more work if the list of files is very long: very disappointing if that's true.
On the other hand I recall many years ago (8i time) crashing a session when creating roughly 21,000 tablespaces for a database because some internal structure relating to file information reached the 64MB hard limit for a memory segment in the SGA. It would be interesting to hear if anyone has recently created a database with the 65K+ limit for files - and whether it makes any difference whether that's 66 tablespaces with about 1,000 files, or 1,000 tablespace with about 66 files.

  • Big Colour and detail changes between Original Nikon RAW files and the images created on the Preview page!

Big Colour and detail changes between Original Nikon RAW files and the images created on the Preview page! Yes there are distinct visual changes when I preview my Nikon NEF RAW Files. Please note I do not use iPhoto at all.
If you view it as a contact sheet straight from the original folder there are no alterations but the moment you double click and want to 'Preview' it, this new preview page introduces very noticeable distortions : lighter shading goes missing and colour goes darker e.g orange turns red and mid blue goes deep blue!  Alarmingly the little column on the left of the preview page showing the collection shows the original file colours and then after a few seconds show the new distorted image...you can see this visible change and it takes place after a few seconds once you double click! Also if you use Apple's 'Cover Flow' to preview, this function will replace your original RAW file with the new 'altered preview' image!
I have raised this with Apple but they have yet to reply...has anyone ever experienced this? I have used my Mac book for 18months only noticed it about 5 days ago!
I went to Apple store and we tried it in other laptops and Macs and it happened to all of them so we think this is a software issue and not down to the laptop.
    Any help is much appreciated!

  • When I export a photo from lightroom, the image is very pixelated.

When I export a photo from lightroom, the image is very pixelated. This pixelization occurs irrespective of whether I make adjustments in Lightroom.  It seems that just placeing the photo into he develope modual  without doing anything to it taints the image in such a manner that when it is exported from the develope modual the expot comes out pixelated.

    Brett,
The photo i was a panorama knitted in Photoshop from four photos which were approx 3.3 MB each. The knitted pic came out to be 1.10MB. The panorama pic I was trying to refine in Lightroom and export came out to be 70.9 KB and extremly pixilated. Whether I altered it  in Lightroom  or not didn't matter.
I can't imagine that bringing up the photo in the Develop modual would result in pixilization when it was exported regardless of whether it was altered or not altered.!!
Attached is  a copy of the Photoshop saved and Lightroom exported photos before and after. I appreciate your help and interest. The top pic 1.10MB is what was saved on Photoshop. The bottom pic 70.9KB is the unaltered pic exported out of the Develop modual exhiiting the pixelization.

  • Many of my images have disappeared while trying to export/convert a file down to a PDF

I am making a portfolio for a submission, so when I finished, I was converting/saving it to a PDF file. I was trying to make the file smaller as to fit in the required submission size. As I was doing that, many of my images disappeared. A lot of them seem to be images I brought over from Adobe Illustrator. Some linked files are gone, while others remain. I am confused how this happened. Even some text that I generated within InDesign is now gone. I sadly saved before I realized this, so when I reopened it, the blank pages remained. Some of the images though have the context/frame boxes still, but no images. Any help?
I'm using InDesign 2014 and I am using a MAC

Can you detect the missing images in the Links panel?

  • Big file or small file

    Hi,
I'm in importing phase of a large database, 1.7 TB... distribuite in 14 fs (/oracle/<SID>/sapdata1-14) of 200 GB more or less, a suggest for size of each datafile? big? small? generaly we use brtools on disk as backup procedure.
    Regards.

    Hello Ganimede,
from the view of oracle itself it doesn't really matter .. so you can use the max size of a data file (metalink note #271482.1 -> "4,194,303 multiplied by the value of the DB_BLOCK_SIZE parameter").
But please think about your backup/restore procedures. If you are using RMAN with block recovery, the recovery would be much faster if your data files are small and each is located in its own backupset, etc...
We use round about 10 GB files.

  • Action to export with maximum file size

I'm looking to export a whole load of images that must not exceed 20Mb. I'm sure this is possible to set up, but how?
    Thanks in advance

Photoshop simply doesn't give you a "target size or smaller" capability directly, so folks are trying to be creative in helping you.  A simple "Thanks, but I really need these big files" would do.
Keep in mind there are a lot of folks using Photoshop who don't know the difference between "JPEG file size on disk" and "photographic file size".  If you want folks to understand that you DO know better, consider writing more than a single sentence in your original post.  Expecting people to assume you're an expert right after posting a basic question seems a bit of a stretch.
You're saying that, with an RGB 8 bits/channel image, do File - Save As, choose JPEG, then look at the estimated file size in the JPEG save dialog and adjust the quality level - because it's manual - isn't good for you.  You need automation.  Fair enough.
Chances are you could do something with Photoshop's Scripting facility.  I imagine it might have to be iterative (e.g., pick a quality level, save, check file size, adjust quality level, repeat...).  The forum for that is down the hall.  There are some very talented people there who give freely of their time.  Please try not to insult them.

  • Lowering the export time without getting a pixellated fade in Compressor

Hi. I'm exporting a 20 minute-long video made in Final Cut Pro, 1080i shot at 25 frames, in Compressor. The finished file needs to be 640x360 res, with a Video Bit Rate of 672 and an Audio of 128.
My settings in Compressor are MPEG-4 for the file type, specifically an H.264 Baseline Profile one, I've got Multi-pass selected and the audio is in Stereo. Under Frame Controls, my resize filter is set to Better, with output fields to Progressive and Deinterlace set to Better. I've ticked Adaptive Details and the Rate Conversion is set to Better.
My original settings were a lot more standard than this, with Fast selected where Better is now selected for example, and the video ended up looking presentable, but with pixellation for every cross dissolve, fade or even movement of the camera. I have looked through a few help topics on this forum and others, and the solutions I came across were to change the settings to the ones I have listed above, what I currently use.
The problem now is that the video never gets exported! I click Submit, and the loading bar appears, moves a little, and the finishing time just goes up and up and up. Last time I tried to export the finishing time said 15 hours!
How do I fix this without ending up with a low quality video?
    Thanks in advance.

To begin, what is the purpose of this job? How are you going to use it?
Open the preview window and mark a short range of representative footage with in and out points. Make your adjustments in the Inspector>Encoder  until the output file is acceptable image quality.
That is a very low data rate for a frame size that big. Why does it have to be 672 (and BTW, there is no way to get it to come out exactly at that rate)?
What is the source material? Are you changing the frame rate? If not don't use Frame Controls for Retiming.
The higher you crank up Frame Controls settings the longer the encode process. Was your source file interlaced? If not, leave that alone.
Try Main Profile and see whether the results are better.
