Export a PDF - Not , Save As?

I'm working on an ai file with seveal artboards. I'd like to export it as an Adobe PDF but the only option I see is Save As. That means it replaces the current ai file I'm woring on with a PDF. This is causing problems. I want to make sure all changes are MADE in the ai file and exported to pdf. but I've gotten confused several times by thinking I'm making changes to the ai - but woopsie! I've made the to the PDF because Illustrator replaced the ai file with the pdf file in my working window.
Is there a way to just export a PDF? Many thanks!

Karen,
So, when you use Save As PDF, you may inadvertently work on and saving (normal Save) as PDF, thus leaving the AI file behind in an earlier version, and when you use Save A Copy you get copy inserted as part of the PDF file name. Each has a downside: in the former case you have to be vigilant and reopen the AI file, in the latter case you have to change the name of the PDF.
Depending on the requirements, you may consider Printing to PDF; this will create a PDF file with the same name (unless you change it) and let you work on in the AI file.

Why is exporting to PDF not working?

    Dear Claudio,
I know it wasn't much to go on but I got your attention!
I work for a charity and use a program called "Donor Perfect".
It has a feature that when you generate a report it gives you the option to export to MSWord, Excel, and PDF.
Below is the step by step description of what happens.
     After log on ......
         1. Click on Reports
         2. Listings
         3. Report Category(any)
         4. Select Record type(any)
         5. Select report options (any selection filter that fits or Build a filter) and sort order(any)
         6. Enter title (accordingly)
         7. Click on Preview
         8. When next screen opens with report visible - in "Report Print preview" line above report choose PDF icon
         9. Export to PDF window opens
         10. click on Page range-ALL
         11. What to print-All pages in Range
         12. Save as C:\DPW32\dpsumm.pdf
         13. collate
         14. number of copies(1)
         15. Click on "Screen"
         16. Click on "Display Conversion Status"
         17. Then "OK"
         18. After conversion status reaches "100%" nothing happens -screen does not change!
Then I minimize DP screen and I go to Start menu
         1. Click on Start
         2. Then "My Computer"
         3. Local Disk "C"
         4. Dpw32
         5. Look for "dpsumm" file with today's date
         6. Size of file says 0 KB and that's it!!!!
In previous versions of DP (8 and 9)
the PDF would open on the screen as soon as the Step 18 was finished, then I could save it with an identifying name to a different folder and use it as an attachment that a Donor could receive by e-mail.
I hope I can get back to that because now I have to convert to "Word" (Which takes a long time)then from that I have to create PDF from Acrobat. too many steps ..... if I have 20-30 reports it's too cumbersome.
    Waiting for your suggestions,

  • I need to able to print a pdf that is locked.  It has fields to fill in but then to save a copy I need to "print" to PDF not save as a pdf because that is not an option with the document.  Is there a way to do this?

The PDF has fields to fill in but then to save a copy I need to "print" to PDF not save as a pdf because that is not an option with the document.  Is there a way to do this?  HELP!

Sorry I thought  was just a one off, it would be no use for large volumes.
Do you not have this avaiable in the print menu in Preview with these documents?
I have also found a link on the Adobe web site that discusses that this facilty is enabled by the creater of the PDF.

If you do a web search there are various claims on how to save a protected PDF, I have'nt a way to test the proceedures. I would want a copy of any forms that I sent off, not sure why they protect them in this way, there must be a reason.

  • Pages Exports to PDF/Printer Saves as PDF with weird characters

This situation is getting worse for me, not better, the more I'm using Pages.
I have made several files, nothing special, just used Pages for layout and the ease of using colors and shapes.
When I Export as PDF, sometimes random text boxes end up having all spaces replaced with exclamation marks. Not always the same one, not always all of the text fields on my page, and so far, never the title. When I "Print to PDF," which used give me an error and say I had to export only but now works, I get the same error. Even a character I used 5 times on the page, the first 4 were fine and the 5th had turned to an exclamation mark. Just for kicks when I could not get my file to work last night, I exported to Word (looked fine) and then went to Save as PDF... same exclamation marks. Physically printing the files has no errors.
Last night I rebooted my MacBook and let it sit a bit and tried again, and both files I was trying to export came out fine. Other times this has happened though, my computer was neither warm nor a few hours from the last reboot.
Methinks that this is related to making PDFs on my computer, maybe that connection between printer driver and making PDFs, but it's also got to be Pages-related. Except for the file I exported to Word, I have no problems with Print to PDF for anything else- Word, Excel, web pages, etc. What should I check/do to try and diagnose the problem? Since the things I do in Pages are generally on a deadline, I need to be proactive about the solution. Rebooting is not going to save me every time.

It could be a font cache problem. You might try using a utility to clear the caches or try doing it by hand. Try a Google search on "clearing font caches" and Leopard, for example. I believe something like Onyx will do it though I haven't used that myself.
I'm not sure about this - it is just a hunch based on some things I've read about problems with Leopard and pdfTeX.

    - RTF Processor Engine PROBLEM IN CREATE XSL FILE
    answered

  • Indesign Exported into PDF - not all images are showing.. !!!!

I've created a DL Phamplet in Indesign, using images from Photoshop (All converted to CMYK,PSD and flattened and used Illustrator files for other objects with the extension (filename).ai afterwards.)
I don't understand why my particular acrobat doesn't show the complete logo. This doesn't occur on two of my the computers at work PC and Mac, but it occurs at my manager's computer and once on my computer. I've outline all the fonts and images etc to ensure everything is in order. Everything is ungrouped as well to ensure all is outline.
    View problem here
    http://img291.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture1yp2.jpg
I've even exported the pdf from the computer that had no problem viewing the missing part of the logo - however when previewing it on my computer, the logo seems to be missing still.
I think its a previewing problem of some sort but not sure. Do I need a certain plugin - I've updated my software and I haven't reinstalled the software. Please assist. Many thanks.
    Other information that may assist?
Working on Mac OS X Version 10.4.11
    CS3
    Acrobal Professional 8

The white logo is undoubtedly set to overprint. Go back into Illustrator
    and fix it.

  • Export to Pdf Not Working - Blank Pages [Solved]

    Peace all!
I've been having this problem about some time now. Any export to pdf produces a pdf with the correct number of pages but they are all blank! Tried fiddling with the options to no avail. Also tried setting the options to use openoffice dialogs.
In an attempt to try to find some log of errors, I started writer from the console with soffice -writer and used the export pdf function but no errors are spitted out. I'm stumped...
    Version 3.0.1
    Thanks in advance!l

Ok, I managed to solve this by deleting the old .openoffice config folder and starting afresh. Not sure what's messed up though but the folder has been used since OO version 2.

  • Save PDF not Save As

I open a PDF file (Any Type of PDF file) into Acrobat reader 10 or 11 and add a comment. If I click the "Save" button the "Save As" dialog pops up. Why? Tried Adobe Support but they do not support any free products. I told them that I have a paid subscription as well but wanted to know why this didn't work. I told support I think it is a bug but he just referred me to a bug report form.
Does anyone have a work around for this issue. The person I'm helping doesn't have Acrobat (Full) but needs to be able to add Comments and just save the file - Not Save As

Sabian - I've tried all types of PDF files on 3 different computers, 2 of which were 32 bit XP machines and 1 that was 64bit Windows 7. The 2 - 32bit machines on XP had Reader 11.0.07 and the 64 bit Windows 7 had Reader 10. I still get the same result. So would it be possible for you take a snap shot of the PDF security properties and maybe a few screen shots of your preferences?
Let me clarify - You opened a PDF file, Made a comment and click the save disk icon or click "Save" under the file menu? And it just saved the document with no Windows Explorer window popping up with "Save As" and the ability to change the file name etc.
I really can't figure it out.

  • Export presets do not save file naming template

I don't know if this is a bug or a missing feature so I'll post here first, then submit a bug report if necessary. I have done a search first but not found anything relevant.
When you create an Export Preset, LR does not save the File Naming Template you want to use with it, the template is always whichever you used last. Seems a bit odd because you might want to use different filenaming conventions depending on what you are doing with the export, eg. different names for proofs, web galleries, etc.
However, if I am missing something, please me let me know.
    Kind regards,
    mcv

That's what I see also but what I meant was that two 'options' down, you can choose what 'File Naming' template to use, eg. Filename, Custom Text (x of y), etc. These don't get saved with your Export Preset, they stay the same as the last one you used. At least on my Windows version.
I don't know how you do enclosures like you did, so I'm linking to the images instead to show you what I mean.
While I was taking screenshots of this I noticed some other peculiar behaviour. It seems that the preset DOES actually save the filenaming template but doesn't show you this. I'll explain as follows:
Here I have a template for full size JPEGs, I invented some custom text and that's why the preset says 'edited'.

Here I have changed the preset but the File Naming template appears to have stayed the same, though it does show a 'preview' (01.jpg).

However, this is odd - I moved the mouse over the custom text box and the words instantly changed to the words I had last used (Castafo is the name of a band). I had not saved the name of the band in the template.

Lastly, I tried another preset and again it appears the template is the same but the 'preview' is correct. Mouseing over did not change any text.

Pretty weird and inconsistent behaviour, don't you think? The software that is, not me - I already know about me(!)
I always keep an eye on the preview anyway so no big deal but do you have any thoughts Ian, or anyone else?
    Thanks,

  • Export as PDF not working.

I can't get a Review Document to "Export as PDF".  When I click on the Export button, the dialog box pops up.  I choose "All" and pick "My Computer" for the Destination. I click on the Export button and choose my Desktop for the download.  It says that it's "Generating PDF" but that's all it does.  I can't Export as PDF, the person reviewing the document can't Export as PDF.  I have tried both Safari and FireFox and my client is using Internet Explorer.  I have also tried logging in under another account and I get the same results.  Last week this was working fine.
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks

This bug was introduced when a new build was deployed on October 27. The bug has been fixed and the fix will be deployed soon. In the meantime a workaround is to Export PDF to Your Workspace. You can then download the PDF from the Workspace.

  • Why does Apple say that Numbers can open and save Excel files, when in actuality, it can only open .XLSX files and only Export to Excel (not save-as excel)?

When attempting to open .XLS files in Numbers, the format is not recognized. When the format is .XLSX, the format is recognized. Why is it this way? It's still much more common for folks to have the .XLS file format on their excel files. Why would Numbers not be backwards-compatible?
Additionally, to state in the benefits of this program that one can save to 'Excel' is a little misleading. You can't save to anything except .numbers. Sure, you can export to Excel (with file extension .XLS, I might add), but you can't save or save-as.
Does anyone else see the irony in being able to export to .XLS but not be able to open an .XLS?
There is something to be said for clarity.
You can't expect folks to have Numbers and Excel on their systems, so how else are they supposed to open .XLS files in Numbers?
And I don't need to see another advertisement for NeoOffice or OpenOffice here, thanks. I'd actually like Numbers to be a little more sensible.
    That is all.

When the advertisements were written, there was no Lion so we were able to Save As Excel.
At thiqs time there is no longer Save As command under Lion but the feature is always available.
When your editing task is ended, you are free to use this scheme:
    File > Duplicate
File > Save and in the dialog you will have the option save as Excel.
Numbers isn't and I hope that it will not become an Excel editor.
Its resources contain a flag defining it this way.
I posted several times a script editing this resource.
This morning I'm not in a mood allowing me to do your duty.

  • Export to pdf not visible for some users

    Hi,
I exported a dashboard to pdf (Xcelsius 2008, SP2), and sent it to other users.
On my labtop the pdf works fine, but some of the users get only a blank page. They are asked if they want to run the contents of the file (so flash is working in general), but after confirming the message, the screen remains blank. The funny thing is, that these users are able to run a PPT or HTML dashboard. The problem occurs only for PDF (all of us are using Adobe Acrobat Professional 7.0).
We already deinstalled flash player plug-ins, and re-installed the plug-ins for Adobe Flash 10, both for IE and Mozilla. (But I am still not sure which plug-in is used when running the PDF??) Any of you an idea if there is an issue with PDFs Exports?
    Thanks a lot,
    Sonja

THIS happens to me too, I have Xcelsius 2008, running XP.
My business partner and I both can view the files in PDF WORD or PPT format if we send them back and forth to edit, but as soon as we send files outside of network, the new person, running XP or Vista, can not see the content.
PDF, word or PPT opens, but there is no content on screen.

  • Pages export to PDF not showing text

I've created a fairly basic document and have exported it to a pdf document. when i view it in google docs, it works fine.
more importantly, when the pdf is viewed in acrobat, the black text seemingly turns white and becomes "invisible". i know the text is there because i can "right click" on the area and it'll find the words. my question is?
why will the pdf render properly in google docs but not acrobat reader??!
    thanks,
    nick

Which fonts have you used and could you give a better description of the contents of the file.
If you like click on my blue name and send me the file, I'll see if I can spot the problem.

  • My font changes when I export to pdf, not on every page but only a few pages

I am using the font Helvetica, light in my iBook.  It looks the same on every page in iBooks Author, but when I export it to PDF some of the pages look like they are written with font Helvetica bold.  Can anyone suggest a fix?  Thank you

A number of threads dealing with issue have been posted over the past two weeks or so, I suggest a search may help you and also check out the More Like This column on the right.
