Export a project with only segments of videos

I do love FCPX and don't miss FCP7, but there is one thing I used to be able to do that I can't figure out if its possible to do in X.
Many of the video clips I use in projects are hours long, and I may only use a few secs of video from them in a project. In FCP7 in the media manager it was possible to export a sequence using only the portion of the video used (with the option to add handles of any length too). I would like to move a sequence from one library to a new one in FCPX 10.2 and have that option. Is that something that is possible or is that something still on the wish list for FCPX 10.3? (Or is it just me who was using this feature in FCP7?)

Re-reading this now, it sounds like you might be referring to using Media Manager in legacy FCP for archiving.
If that''s the case, then no… FCP X doesn't have an equivalent function.
I think if I were working with the kind of material you describe, I would probably begin by creating a camera archive when the footage was being taken off the camera/recorder. That way, I could preview in the import window and make rough selects when importing to my event.

Also, here is a third party clip management app that may fit your workflow.

Only sound, when I export HDV project with Quicktime

I'm working with Final Cut Pro 5.0 (yes I know I have to upgrade) with material from HV 20.
When I export my finished project with the export to Quicktime opt. I can't watch the movie in Quicktime player, Itunes, VLC or MPEG Streamclip, only in FCP. The Sound is there but know picture.
since I do not yet have DVD Studio I know have a problem, since I cannot make a DVD out of it.
Or can I? Why is there no picture? How can I do it the best?
I also tried exporting it through compressor to H.264 and quicktime. That as well didn't work.

Make sure that you have the current HDV codec present in your /Library/Quicktime folder. If you don't have the codec you will sound but no picture. The codec is automatically installed when installing FCS--but interestingly I had to manually install it from the FCS install packages using Pacifist when I upgraded to Leopard (on my PPC machine, the Intel one was OK).
Unfortunately Apple does not make the codecs available for download--which makes no sense. If you want to pass an HDV movie over to another machine you must manually install the Apple HDV Quicktime codec. I don't even know if Apple considers this some sort of violation of their License.

Project manager - problem exporting a project with AE compositions.

I have a problem exporting my project to another disk, this is what happens:
I needed to move the project from the windows partition of my Mac to the Mac partition, in order to be able to continue my edit under MacOS, my sequences include a series of After Effects compositions of footage that has been stabilized in warp stabilizer using the option "replace with AE composition" from the timeline.
Using the project manager I started my backup operation, with these options:
Source: all sequences selected
Resulting Project: Collect files and copy to new location
Include Audio conform files
Destination: a folder in the Mac partition
The resulting project had a message popping up saying that AE rpject file is missing (it was, I had to manually copy and paste it from ithe win partition to the mac) and once copied obviously AE couldn't find the source video clips of its compositions, so I had to manually re-link them all (quite difficult job to do among almost two years of footage).
What have I done wrong ?

I understand that Adobe Anywhere solves this, but there should be this fairly basic functionality (which exists in Avid and FCP) in a non-enterprise edition of the software. I have submitted a couple different feature requests about this, going back to CS5, so hopefully enough people make similar requests for a fix to be implemented. Adobe Anywhere is really not a solution for our small shop as currently configured/priced, especially when we can have editors working remotely with very affordable USB 3 drives. The only hangup is the markers, which just isn't worth a 5 figure fix. As such it's hard to consider the problem solved for either us or any small shop or post crew.

Creating a project with *only* JSR168 support

In the article, "Deploying Java Portlets with WebLogic Portal 8.1 SP3" (at http://dev2dev.bea.com/products/wlportal81/articles/deployJava81sp3.jsp) Alex states:
"One consideration that may reduce deployment time is to use a scale down version of the Portal project. You can create your own project that only includes support for JSR 168 and no other services. Tags related to the portal content management services, Java pages flows, and other non-168 services could be removed."
Does anyone have any guidance on how this might be done? The 'Create project' wizard in WebLogicWorkshop does not offer much guidance. This info seems to suggest that this would be done by deleting some stuff from a WebLogicWorkshop portal project. However, I've found it can be a tricky knowing which things are OK to delete, and which things are required (especially meta-info files).
Any suggestions?

You could theoritically delete all the netui related jars. Beware - i am not sure what the portaladmin web app uses.
SO - basically if u skinny down your web-inf directory u should be ok - but don't skinny down the app-inf/lib without testing the portaladmin web app.

Hi, I just bought my mac yesterday, i'm new at everything then. I want to know if i can make a movie with photo slideshows and videos in between. For example, i would like to place all my photos and videos from a trip in chronological order, so when i click play there's going to be like ten photos, then a 2minute video, then photos again and so on... which program or application do you recommend for this?

Per your description, this should not be a problem from within iMovie '08. Adding slideshows created in iPhoto (contain "Tween" tracks that iMovie '08 doesn't like) or dropping too many photos on top of a single video clip (iMovie '08 can be touchy about initial placement of dropped photos) can, however, create potential problems.

If you have Shared or Finalized your original project, you can use that.
If you used SHARE/EXPORT MOVIE or SHARE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME or SHARE to iTunes, you can use those copies.
If you Finalized or used SHARE/TO MEDIA BROWSER, you may have a copy inside your project package. I say MAY because this may be the copy you are seeing when you say the whole thing still plays. But usually, when you start to further edit a project, the first thing it does is delete the Media Browser copy.
To see the Media Browser copy, (if any), go to the Movies/iMovie Projects folder in the Finder and look for your project. It should have your project name and the extension .rcproject.
The rcproject file is really a package, so right click on the rcproject file and select "Show Package Contents". Look in the the Movies folder of the package to find any existing copies.
You can import these files back into an iMovie event using FILE/IMPORT/MOVIES...
I would suggest copying and pasting to your desktop (or location of your choice) before importing.

Export in QuickTime with "Only Hyperlink"

OK, I may have found the source of the problem: when i tried to play the movie file that I had inserted in Keynote on my PC, Quicktime asked for a codec. In Movie Inspector, I saw that the video was encoded in FLV1...
Any idea where I can get this codec for QT WIndows (I'm searching for it and haven't found it yet)

Export XDCam Project with Mainconcept Mpeg ProHD 3

Hi, I'm working in a project where all the material was recorded in XDCam Ex HQ (1920x1080 50i 35vbr)
And when i'm editing all is nice but when i want to export my sequence to an mp4 (xdcam format) using the mainconcept plugin strange things happens
For example if a use a video effect like a video scale in the preview is all ok, but when i export to an mp4 the effect begin before and add a little zoom between frames (before and after the video effect).
I think is something with the long gop, but i'don know.
And i have another problem when i try to export to mp4 (xdcam format) sometimes i can export and sometimes i can't.
When i'cant i have to reboot my computer and maybe after that i can export the sequence.
Someone have any idea.

How to duplicate Events/Projects with only Proxies.

I'm on a MBP Retina, with 500GB SSD. Running Mountain Lion and FCPX 10.0.5.
I have a 3TB Seagate drive.
I encoded all my footage to ProRes 422 first, then imported that as original media into my current Project. That footage is over 1TB in disk space.
I then created Proxies of all that, and am pleased at the performance, and file size of the proxies.
Now I want to copy my Event/Project to a smaller drive that only has 400 GB available (I measured my Proxies footage folder and it's only over 100GB. So plenty of space).
I've viewed tutorials on the dangers of duplicating in the Finder, and that everything must be duplicated or copied within FCPX.
So my question: How can I take my current Event/Project and Proxy versions only, and go home and edit, and then come back to the office and move my updated Project file and relink and keep moving with my bigger versions stored on my 3TB drive? What's the step-by-step?

Here is a possible way to go about this:
Duplicate (or move) all projects to the backup drive. Duplicate the event to the backup drive.
Click on each copied project from the backup drive (you don't need to open its timeline), go to the Inspector and click on "Modify Event References". There you will get a list with two events (the one on the original disk and the copy you just made). Move the new copy to the top an click ok. Now your projects will reference the versions of your clips in the copied event, and you can safely delete the originals.

How do I save my catalogue, with only fotos without videos ?

Exporting a project with multiple audio tracks changes the loudness level regardless of export format

I recently had to submit a TVC and discovered that premiere was changing the loudness level after export, when the TVC failed the quality check.
I checked the audio loudness of other formats that I had exported and the same thing had happened the audio loudness, it had changed.
After a bit of troubleshooting I found a workaround. I mixdown all of the tracks in adobe audtion to one track and then imported it into premeire.
Once I did this the audio loudness was not changed after exporting.
Workflow for when it didn't work.
I used edit in adobe audtion for the audio tracks from premiere.
Matched the audio to the loudness level I wanted, and then saved each track.
Export from premiere.
To Check Audio Loudness
Bring in exported file into new premiere project
Edit the audio in adobe audtion.
Drag the audio file into match audio to check loudness level.
I am using
Adobe Premiere Pro CC v8.1
Windows 7 on PC
Please fix this adobe.

What did your Broadcast Quality Control pick up on?
Audio Levels and Loudness are two different things in this regard.

Exporting SpeedGrade Project with Embedded Alpha Channel

Hello! I am currently writing with a problem I can't seem to find a solution for in SpeedGrade. My problem is that I imported footage with embedded alpha channel enabling me to chroma-key out a green screen. I would like to export this file now with the alpha channel still embeded to be delivered to Premiere. Is this possible?

I'm using uncopressed QT, animation.
I did the color correction on a grading track and I think that's what killed the alpha, because when I selected the track with the footage the alpha was being read properly. So what I did instead is I saved a .look file and imported it in After Effects, I rendered from there.
Can you have the grading track read the alpha from the original footage or if not can you copy the attributes from one track to another, as if I was moving all the grading from the grading track to the footage tiself instead of having to do it again from scratch?

I exported a project to QuickTime and the video quality is a bit shimmery, and grainy.

Did I do too much color correcting (too much saturation)? Or might it have something to do with the Broadcast filter? Or might it have something to do with what CODEC I used? I'm stumped.

What is the format/codec of the clips you are using? That would help us figure out what easy setup would best match.
Also, don't copy/paste the old sequence into the new sequence. Select all the clips in the old sequence and copy/paste them into the new sequence. (There is a difference.)
If you have 1280x720 clips, then it would appear you shot 720p video. The corresponding easy setup would be HDV Apple Intermediate Codec 720p30 (North America) or 720p25 (Europe).
