Export a raw file to jpeg losses lens information

When I export a raw file to jpeg it losses the lens information.

Ernie,
I have never paid attention to those tags on exported JPGs before, but I have recreated the scenario you described.  I have a Canon XTi, and my CR2 master files have about 12 more EXIF tags than the JPG versions.  Excluded in the JPG is the lens model.
However, the lens information for my camera is Canon proprietary tags.  That is, the general EXIF lens tags are not populated by my camera, so I would not expect them to be translated to regular EXIF tags by Aperture in a JPG.  I.e., I don't think Aperture will take metadata from one proprietary tag and put it in the place of another standard tag.  I suspect that is the same is true in your case.

  • When I export my RAW files to JPEG they're about half the size, is that right?

So, I've been using Aperture for about 2-3 years.  I always shoot in RAW and then export to JPEG onto my desktop so I'm able to burn a disk.  In the past my JPEG size is about 2/3 the size of my RAW files. Now, it's about 1/2.  (ie, 23.72 MB in RAW is about 12.3 MB in JPEG) I'm not understanding why.  All my presets are to keep the original size.  I want my friends to have the full file size so they can go and get their own prints done...
Thanks so much for anyone's help!
    Misty

    Misty,
Lots of unknowns.  Is it the same camera shooting the RAW.  Is the RAW in both cases set the same -- with some it can be either lossless compressed or totally uncompressed RAW?  Also bit depth can be set differently with some -- what type of camera are you shooting?
Is the JPEG compression set to 12 in both cases (size of 12.3 MB would likely indicate 12)?

  • Lightroom wont allow me to convert RAW file to JPEG

    Hi
I have tried and failed to export a RAW file to JPEG. When i highlight the RAW images to export i get a message, "source file are offline or missing". Does anyone know what this means and how can i save RAW images to JPEG?

I chose to move the images to a different file when they were exported to jpeg
Do you mean "I chose to move the images to a different file  FOLDER when they BEFORE I TRIED to export to jpeg"?
If so, this is an unnecessary step in Lightroom, that actually interferes with you using the photos in Lightroom. Best to not move the files any more using your operating system, and use Lightroom tools such as keywords, captions and other metadata to help you segregate and organize your photos.
To fix this problem now, either use your operating system to move the photos back to their original location, or use this: http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm

  • Export of RAW files loses EXIF data

I am having a problem when I export files out of the PSE Organizer from RAW format to JPG that I am losing EXIF data on the resulting JPG file.
I am using PSE 6 on Windows Vista and primarily manage my images in RAW format (Nikon D300 NEF) within the Organizer. I am using the latest Adobe Camera RAW plugin ver 5.1 but I have tried this with the last three Camera RAW plugin versions without any difference.
I typically need to get the RAW NEF images into JPG format to post them to my blog so I normally select several NEF files at once within the Organizer then CTRL-E (or File, Export, As New Files), select JPEG, then Export.
The resulting JPG file has no EXIF data for the camera (e.g. Camera make, model, f-stop, exposure, etc) that was on the original NEF file. I am determining this by right-click, Properties, Details on the file within Windows explorer.
Other tests I have done to diagnose this are:
    1. Opening an NEF file in Full Edit mode from the Organizer then doing a File, Save As (JPEG), the missing EXIF data *does* get saved properly. The problem with this approach is that it is not suitable to export hundreds of NEF files.
    2. I downloaded a trial version of PSE 7 and it behaves identically to PSE6 in this test.
    3. I downloaded a trial version of Lightroom 2 and the export feature works properly in this test.
    Any help would be appreciated.

My observations of what is happening is exactly what you are seeing with one exception about the XMP update. <br /><br />My reply that I posted about seeing the XMP file being updated was based on the observation that when I did a File > Write Keyword Tag the time and date changed on the XMP file as seen with Windows Explorer. I also looked inside the XMP file with a text editor and saw the updated comments and tags inside. See this section of the XMP file that shows the comments and tags:<br /><br />------------<br /><rdf:Description rdf:about=""<br />    xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"><br />   <dc:creator><br />    <rdf:Seq><br />     <rdf:li>Baden Smith</rdf:li><br />    </rdf:Seq><br />   </dc:creator><br />   <dc:rights><br />    <rdf:Alt><br />     <rdf:li xml:lang="x-default">Copyright - Baden Smith - All Rights Reserved</rdf:li><br />    </rdf:Alt><br />   </dc:rights><br />   <dc:description><br />    <rdf:Alt><br />     <rdf:li xml:lang="x-default">Fishing boats sailing by our balcony at dawn in Zanzibar</rdf:li><br />    </rdf:Alt><br />   </dc:description><br />   <dc:subject><br />    <rdf:Bag><br />     <rdf:li>Africa</rdf:li><br />    </rdf:Bag><br />   </dc:subject><br />  </rdf:Description><br />------------<br /><br />My original question posted was about the export to JPG and not seeing the camera EXIF info being exported. • Can you export a raw file photo with Lightroom adjustments attached?

Can you export a raw file photo from Lightroom with Lightroom adjustments attached in some way?  If not what is the equivalent?  There are some individuals I would like to send the full data of the raw file, but with the non-destructive Lightroom adjustments layered on top.
    --Gerry

You can select "Original" as the file type, in Export. This saves out a copy of the imported source file into the selected location, labelling the current adjustments onto that image. When this is sent to somebody and imported to LR / opened in ACR, these metadata will be found and used automatically, with the exact same outcome as within your own LR Catalog - provided the LR / ACR versions are sufficiently compatible, and provided camera and lens profiles applied to the image, are present in both contexts.
LR uses whatever method is normal when writing metadata, for each file type involved. So, if one imported file is a proprietary Raw file, LR will write an XMP file alongside. If another is capable of having metadata written into its file header, LR will do that instead.
One important difference between doing this, vs writing LR metadata out to your original imported file, and sending that: the Export Original method will work in the same way, just as successfully, for one or more Virtual Copy versions (duplicating physically as needed), as it will for the primary Master version - relating to a given imported file.

  • PSE11 Export of RAW files not sharp

I am using PS Elements 11 with raw converter 7.3, processing .DNG files from a Samsung GX-10 on a PC.
I notice that, despite sharpening the image in the raw converter, that the preview (F11) in the organiser is not sharp. This is somewhat annoying.
However, even more annoying is the fact that the blurriness continues if I export the DNG from the organiser to a new JPEG, even if I set the quality at Maximum (12). The export and preview seem to be ignoring the sharpness I have set in the raw converter.
If I open the .DNG in the editor and then save the file as a JPEG straight away, all my sharpening remains intact, and the final JPEG is fine.
I have tried using setting the 'process' in the raw converter to '2010', and also tried setting the JPEG preview size to 'Full Size' in the RAW converter save options. Neither of these seems to make any difference.
For my normal workflow I edit the .DNG files using the raw converter, using the PSE editor only when necessary. I then use the organiser to export the .DNG files to JPEGs for printing, emailing or whatever. This workflow does not give me the results I expect any more.
It looks like I am going to have to open every processed RAW image in the editor and then save the files as JPEGs individually. Also the organiser preview does not give me an accurate preview of the quality of the processed file.
Has anyone else observed this, or have any suggestions for a cure or a revised workflow?
    Bill.

    Jon,
Thanks for the response and the tips, but I am happy with the sharpening I am applying in camera raw itself, but the problem occurs when I click the 'Done' button to save the results to the organiser, and then subsequently export to a jpeg.
For an example, this is how an oversharpened test shot appears on the screen in ACR 7.3 at 100% zoom with sharpening set to 150 (via print screen)...
Click Done and then export from the organiser (max quality) and this is the blurry result that appears:
This is also the sort of view I get in the organiser preview (F11) even at 100%.
If instead of clicking Done in ACR, I click Open Image and then save the image as a JPEG, this is what I get:
This latter image is what I would be expecting. (Of course I wouldn't normally sharpen my images like that!) In fact the exported raw images are much softer than the JPEGs that come straight out of the camera.
Maybe I am doing something wrong, and I am quite happy to be corrected, but I have been sharpening my images with ACR in PSE10 quite happily for a year or more. Its only since PSE11 and ACR 7.3 that I have noticed this issue.
    Regards,
    Bill

Bridge will do the job. View > Sort > ByType. Then you can choose a group of one type and put the files in a separate folder.

  • Can't separate raw files from jpegs in my ipad iphoto...

i recently purchased iphoto for my ipad but i cannot separate raw files from jpegs. i can see them all in my imac and save all files properly, but then i would like to erase raw files and keep only jpegs in my ipad but cannot find how to do it! any help? thank you!

yes I am importing pairs raw+jpeg using the camera connection kit. for what I understood reading the entire discussion you suggested, the solution is, after saving the files elsewhere, to delete the photos, but ipad would erase only raw files, leaving the jpeg. but I tried with one photo, and after deleting it, the photo was gone entirely!..
also, I still cannot see both pictures (raw and jpeg) in my ipad iphoto. i can see them in my imac iphoto, but it seems the program runs differently according to the device.. that would make things so much easier for everybody!
a button 'select all' would also be appreciated I am sure!

  • Hello- I am a Canon photographer.  I use Bridge (CS5) to process my raw files to jpegs.  I am taking on a second photographer who shoots Nikon (D800) and i am not currenty able to see or process his images.  Can you please help?  thankyou!

Hello- I am a Canon photographer.  I use Bridge (CS5) to process my raw files to jpegs.  I am taking on a second photographer who shoots Nikon (D800) and i am not currently able to see or process his images.  Can you please help?  thank you!

    According to Adobe:
    D800
    NEF
    6.7, 7.1
    4.1
    D800E
    NEF
    6.7, 7.1
    4.1
The fact that they have 2 versions of ACR means that initial support for the D800 was added in 6.7  but that complete support was finalized in 7.1 (the 4.1 in the chart is for Lightroom)
I'm not sure that this means there are missing features, but rather refinements and optimized settings were added in 7.1
    However, ACR 7.1 requires CS6.
As Dag mentioned, you can also use the latest version of DNG Converter to convert the D800 files to DNGs which will be able to be opened in older versions of ACR.
The DNG converter only works on folders of files, not individual files. So just select the folder and convert. All the files in the folder will be converted.

  • How do you export a RAW file from Lightroom?

I am trying to export my RAW files to my desktop (on a mac) so that I can send the files via email. Is this possible?

You can't save it as the original RAW file, (e.g. .CR2 or .NEF) but you can export as a DNG file. Go to File settings > Image Format > DNG.
P.S. You should be able to send an NEF or CR2 file by email as long as it doesn't exceed the file size limit

  • HT3825 so how do you convert the raw files to jpeg in iphoto?

how do you convert the raw files to jpeg in iphoto?

    Many thanks Barbara and dj_paige.
What I didn't mention is that I'm using PSE 5 with ACR 4.6, if its relevant.  I'm thinking of updating to the next version when its out in the hope that it will run with Windows 7 64 bit or I may go to Lightroom.
I can now see that I can batch convert a whole folder of files using "process multiple files" as dj_paige suggested but that is too many at once as the settings I choose won't be relevant for all the pics in the folder.
I was hoping to batch convert say 5 or 6 similar photos at a time with the same settings. I'm not quite clear what you're suggesting but I'm hoping that its a "work round" using two stages to achieve this.
I can't see a list of open files within ACR to ensure that they are all selected as you suggest.
What does clicking Open rather than Done mean?  Does this amend the original RAW file to the settings selected so that if I then "process multiple files" on the whole folder to convert from RAW to JPEG they will in fact have already been processed in smaller groups so I can convert without applying any further changes?
If so, what settings should I apply to "process multiple files" to ensure a simple conversion of file type rather than any further adjustments?
Any further help on this would be much appreciated.

HHi Barbara, thanks for replying to my post.
No there's nothing wrong with the Jpegs, but I want to srart uploading images for sale in Alamy, but they say they must be a minimum of 17mb un compressed. Does that mean that at 6mb compressed from 90mb they'd be acceptable?
    thanks,

  • Why does aperture convert my raw files to jpegs when I import them from iPhoto?

Why does aperture convert my raw files to jpegs when I import them from iPhoto?

    It doesn't.
When you import  Raw to iPhoto the app makes a jpeg preview of the Raw automatically. When you import from iPhoto then Aperture brings over both versions.
