Export an alternate layout from a indesign book

Hello,
I'm working on a big file, which has been, for size reasons, separated in multiple files that have then been assembled in an indesign book
Problem: This document is edited for print and also as an interactive pdf for ipad, which is why I have created an alternate layout for the ipad version, which contains a navigation based on hyperlinks, linking different pages and documents from the Book.
But here is the thing, when exporting the whole book to pdf (using the Indesign Book panel), I can't choose the layout I want to export, as I can do when I export from a single document with several alternate layouts
What I get when I export from a single file with two alternate layouts to interactive pdf
What I get when I export the Indesign Book with two alternate layouts to an interative pdf
Why is that? Is there a way I can export only one layout without having to RE-assemble the whole document into one file?
If I export the whole book as it is, my two alternate layouts are just following each other and it's a big mess, not to mention the hyperlinks don't work anymore.
Also, if the only way is to make one file, the file is then too heavy to be worked with, it's 280 pages long, with HD images on every page ( and the alternate layouts double the pages...)
Does anyone have a solution?

You mean, breaking the document into two or three files and then exporting each of these and then assembling the pdf files?
But then the hyperlinks from one doc to another don't work. I tried it already.
The problem is that I need to export ALL of these documents into ONE pdf because of the interactivity of the hyperlinks.

  • How can I export a pdf of an InDesign alternate layout from a book?

    Hello:
    I have a book that is in a 6×9″ layout and I would like to make an alternate layout for 8.5×11 (and other formats) then export both as independent books to PDFs. How can I do this or is there another better way? I thought alternate layout would be the way to go, but I don’t think I can export the alternate layouts for all my chapters/etc., from the book menu without including ALL the pages from each layout?
    Thanks for any direction or advice!

    Hi Willi:
    Thanks for your prompt response.  Do you know if there are any scripts that can do this or at least help automate some of this process?
    Thanks!

  • Alternate Layouts not like InDesign

    I am trying to use the alternate layout feature in Muse but it is not working like it does in InDesign. Creating blank pages doesn't really help much and not linking the text makes for double work.
    Are there any plans for the future to change this feature to be more like InDesign?

    I know it does not serve the same purpose. I just think it would be better if there were a choice to include the content. It is a lot easier to re-arrange then to start from scratch or cut and paste.
    More important - linking the text so that a change can be updated in all layouts without re-entering. Also, adding photos could be automatic across layouts - again if you want to.

  • Can't view some images or export them to PDF from CS6 InDesign

    I recently reimaged my Win7 PC hard drive and I was told by Adobe that I needed to reinstall CS6.
    I was editing a document I've been working on for months and when I went to export it to PDF, like I've done many times in the past (pre-reimaged hard drive), I got an error message during the PDF export. Now when I view the document in ID, many of the graphics on other pages display as grey boxes and I can't export to PDF(or print to PDF) anything but grey boxes or no images for many of the images/graphics. Or, I may get a PDF without the graphics, but a dark area for the drop shadow only in place of the graphic. When I try to relink the graphics I get an error message that says "You don't have permission to open this file. Contact the file owner or an administrator to obtain permission." I am the file owner and admin. These files gave me no problems before this reinstall.
    I also found that if I try to open an offending AI or EPS files in AI CS6, I get a similar message that says, "Can't open the illustration. The file may be read only, or the files is in use by another application, or you do not have the required permissions. Please save the document with a different name, or in a different folder or directory. -54"
    I uninstalled and reinstalled CS6 again (as administrator), and did the appropriate updates. Same results.
    I also opened another client's file and had a similar issue when I exported to PDF.
    I tried to save the first file to IDML so I could open it in CS5, which (CS5) has been working perfectly since the reinstall. When I created the IDML from CS6, it did some really strange things when opening it in CS5, including while opening the IDML file, it would "call" an ID CS6-based file, which of course, CS5 didn't like at all. It then goes into an endless loop which requires Windows Task Manager to get out of the program.
    Any ideas as to what's going on here? Do I need to change some settings in ID? Acrobat?
    Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

    I found the solution in other discussions...
    I need to run iTunes in 32-Bit mode.

  • EPub export using just a range of pages from inDesign Book

    I've created an ePub Fixed Layout ebook from inDesign 2014.1. I now want to create a summary book for Apple's iBook store, using pages from multiple chapters.
    I know the ePub export dialog has an "Export Range" panel in the "General" tab. When you export from a single inDesign Document, you can either leave it as "All Pages" or chose a Page Range. However, I have an inDesign Book, with a inDesign document per chapter.
    When I do the ePub "Fixed Layout" export, I come to this panel and the option to select a Page Range is disabled, so I can't specify the pages I want. The pages are numbered to follow on from chapter to chapter.
    So, it looks to me like exporting to ePub from an inDesign Book will only allow you to create an ebook from ALL of the pages of the inDesign Book?
    I'd really like to create a summary from multiple chapters, so any suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Bill

    Hi Bill,
    Page range for export can only be selected when exporting a document to Fixed Layout ePub. It cannot be done when exporting book to Fixed Layout ePub.

  • How can I generate printer spreads when using an Indesign Book?

    Our design team utilizes the Indesign Book feature to tackle magazine design. This convenient feature has become part of our workflow for both print and dps versions of the content since we do not work in the same locations yet share design responsibility. We're able to see when someone else is working in a "chapter" and keep our overall content synced.
    Is there a way from the Indesign Book palette to generate a pdf that is in printer's spreads? The export options included within the Book Palette appear geared to reader spreads only. It seems the only automated option is to work from 1 large Indesign file and use the File > Print Booklet option. Is there a better solution that is geared more toward the Indesign Book user that offers the same outcome without a lot of manual work?

    I usually (when needed as sometimes is) export the entire book to a PDF using the pdf settings- bleeds etc. but I don't include inside bleeds.
    I then create a new document the original size - and use the MultiPage importer script http://indesignsecrets.com/zanelli-releases-multipageimporter-for-importing-both-pdf-and-i ndd-files.php
    You can then offset the PDF to the bleed using a negative value in the placement options (it's tricky to get the hang of this so try a few pages first)
    Then I can use File>Print Booklet and Choose PDF.
    It's a hack and a half but it can work - but I'd never send this particular file to a printers to be printed.
    As always - be careful.

  • Export a print layout to another company

    Is it possible to export a print layout from one company to another company.
    Regards,
    Henrik

    Hi Henrik,
    Yes, you can export the layout definition from one database to another. It is one of the rare occasions where SAP allow the transfer of data using SQL Tools. You must be transferring from the same version and localisation of SBO.
    See SAP Note 600813 for full details of how to do it. This can be found here:
    https://websmp103.sap-ag.de/~form/handler?_APP=01100107900000000342&_EVENT=DISPL_TXT&_NNUM=600813&_NLANG=E
    Basically, you copy all the relevant lines from the RDOC and RITM tables using the DocCode as a filter.
    Also, I think I read somewhere that the new Copy Express add-on can automate this process but I've never checked.
    Hope this helps,
    Owen

  • Alternate Layouts not flowing to iPad

    I created a simple folio with three articles in CS6.
    For each article I created horizontal and vertical alternate layouts for Kindle Fire, Android, and iPad.
    The folios download to the Fire and the Xoom and display as expected. The iPad doesn't see the folio at all. Using most recent version of the Viewer 2.5.0.
    Has anyone else seen this behavior? Am I (as per usual) missing something?
    Thx
    DMc

    Yes, both the V and H are those dimensions.
    I just went in and made a few corrections - making certain that no content was outside the guides. And then updated the articles, but it hasn't showed up in the Viewer.
    I find it noteworthy that the Document Setup shows a page size of Kindle Fire/Nook in the pull down, and then in the Edit Page Size flyout menu of the Pages panel I have selected iPad. Might I have been better off creating the thing for iPad and then making the alternate layouts from that one?
    I will create a new folio now with only the iPad layout, and see if it appears in the Viewer. If so, I will add the alternate layouts.
    Finally, is "Alternate Layout" a synonym for "Rendition" now in CS6?

  • Export PDF from InDesign Book

    Hi, I have a customer that has huge problems to export PDFs from InDesign Books. He has books with many documents with a total amount of 500-700 pages, when he try to export a PDF InDesign quit unexpectedly. I wrote a script for him that export the PDF from the book without the progress bar, and sometimes it solves the problem but sometimes not, and I have a "out of memory" message. He must export multiple PDF from the same book and then merge those PDF with Acrobat but he has also interactivity sometimes and it's a nightmare to merge PDFs with interactive objects and bookmarks.  Someone of you have experienced the same problem (and maybe has a solution)?  Thank you

    It seems that InDesign saturate the available RAM during the operation of gathering information before start to export, if I restart InDesign each time and export a selection of documents it works. I'm exporting now two separate PDF and it seems to work, but again only if I close and restart InDesign before exporting, I'm working on an iMac with an Intel 2.93 GHz i7 and a total of 8 GB RAM.

  • Why do colours change in PDF created from InDesign book?

    Please help.
    I've created a Book from 5 InDesign documents that have images text and some Illustrator drawings in.
    When I export the Book to PDF some of the colours in the Illustrator graphics are different (the graphics are all vector based maps with some text). Not all colours are changing, seems to be different blues showing as one green in the PDF.
    Same thing happens when I print the Book from InDesign.
    Could anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong.

    Help!  I too am having problems when creating a pdf in InDesign.  My colors are all Pantone process colors.  My specific problem is that when I export my book cover to a PDF, my process black is changing to gray.  This ONLY happens with pdfs.  When I save as a jpg things are fine.  It will print fine.  I have been scaling it down, but i prints black.  Help!  This is a project due for a typography class on Monday and must be printed and mounted for class.

  • Create Indesign book from paths in an excel sheet

    Hello All
    I have started to learn some scripting, and want to know if it is possible to read information from Excel sheet? In this case it is paths to Ind files.
    Today we are working with several documents which we compile into a book, this to create custom-made manuals for our customers. The script I'm looking for or will try to create will use these paths from the excel sheet to compile an Indesign book.
    Any tips where I can find information about similar tasks.
    Please respond

    Thanks for your advices.
    So if I understood it right it is impossible for Java or VB through Indesign to access information located within sheets in an Excel document. That is too bad.
    We don't have the possibility to convert the .xls to for example .csv, becouse of .csv does not support more than one sheet. An SQL database could be a possible solution, but this shouldn’t either work?
    What I don’t really understand is why you can merge information from an excel sheet into an Indesign page, but not collect strings from an excel sheet when running a script.

  • Exporting text.doc from an InDesign file

    Hello,
    I have about 400 pages, each with one textframe that is linked throughout all 400 pages. Each page also has a separate 'header' textframe that isn't linked. I need to export just the text from both of these textframes, but the headers need to somehow be "inserted" between each linked textframe on each page.
    I can easily copy/paste the entire linked textframe, it's getting the headers in there too that is the issue. Make sense?

    Hi,
    I think this is a good job for a script.
    I.e. like this:
    myDoc = app.activeDocument;
    myTextArr = new Array();
    var myTextStory = currHead = currText = "";
    for (k=0; k<myDoc.pages.length;k++) {
        currHead = currText = "";
        for (f = 0; f<myDoc.pages[k].textFrames.length; f++)
            switch (isLinked( myDoc.pages[k].textFrames[f] ) ) {
                case true: {currText = myDoc.pages[k].textFrames[f].contents; break;}
                case false: {currHead = myDoc.pages[k].textFrames[f].contents; break;}
                default: {currHead = currText = ""; break;}
        if(currHead!=="") myTextArr.push(currHead);
        if(currText!=="") myTextArr.push(currText);
    myTextStory = myTextArr.join("\r");
    myFolder = "~/Desktop"               // You can edit this
    ExportFile = new File(myFolder + "/" + "InDesign_Export.txt");          // You can edit this
    ExportFile.open("w",undefined, undefined);
    ExportFile.write(myTextStory);
    ExportFile.close();
    function isLinked(myTF){
        if(!myTF.isValid) return -1;
        if(myTF.startTextFrame == myTF.endTextFrame) return false;
        else return true;
    It should be saved as .jsx file and placed in your Script Panel folder.
    To run - double click in InDesign script panel.
    hope...

  • When I move pages from one document to another, it creates a new alternate layout.

    Hello,
    I'm having an issue with combining some documents. Usually I use the "move pages" command and tell the pages to integrate with another document. However, because of the new alternate layout feature, both documents have the default layouts as "Letter V". So when I move pages from one document to the end of another, it creates a new alternate layout labeled "Letter V2" and "Letter V3" etc. Is there a way to make the pages just go into the main layout of Letter V without creating a new alternate layout? How do I merge alternate layouts created in the integrated document? All documents are the same page size and orientation.
    Thank you kindly,
    Sheena

    Petrill,
    Thank you. I was trying to do that yesterday, but it was grayed out. It seemed to work alright today.
    Thanks,

  • Exporting Indesign book to single page PDFs

    Hi,
    I'm after a script that will enable me to select an entire Indesign book and export it as separate individual PDFs in one go.
    I know there are a few scripts that either export the book into chapters or export the .indd files to separate single PDFs, but nothing that will do everything in one action. (i.e. take the book and output all the individual pages as single PDFs)
    Has anyone written a script like this or is it easy to tweak an existing script?
    BTW I have no scripting knowlege whatsoever.
    Thank you again
    Scott
    These are the two scripts I was refering to:
    http://www.kahrel.plus.com/indesign/pdf_individuals.html
    http://indesignsecrets.com/page-exporter-utility-peu-5-script-updated-for-cs3.php

    RichardM0701, are you the same person as scottbentley?
    I fear your response doesn't make a lot of sense. The easiest way is to put your files into a book, which will not harm them. The easiest script is often no script at all.
    I don't understand your comment about separate text boxes, files contain text boxes and definitionally multiple files means multiple separate text boxes.
    I do not know what you are referring to with respect to the toc update, perhaps you could reference a particular command or script, or provide a screenshot.
    It sounds like now you are interested in updating multiple tables of contents in a single fell swoop -- this would appear to have nothing to do with the original question. If that's the case, please start a new thread.

  • Publishing an alternate layout in InDesign CS6

    I've create a 3 page sample file to show a client how they can re-purpose their InDesign print file and use InDesign to create alternate layouts. I've created a test file that has 2 alternate layouts. One is the standard iPad portrait view and the other is an iPad landscape view. I simply want to output this file as a PDF that I can show to the client on an iPad. How do I output or publish this file so that when view on an iPad it will show the landscape layout in landscape orientation and the portrait layout in portrait orientation?

    Small correction: You CAN create EPUB3 fixed layout if you have CS6, but it can be a painful process. Anne-Marie Concepcion explains how in her video on Lynda.com:
    http://www.lynda.com/Dreamweaver-tutorials/Comparing-looks-fixed-vs-flowable-EPUBs/94249/9 9018-4.html
