Export aperture originals with the edits, keywords etc to external hard drive?

Hi,
I have filled more than half of my hard drive with 29,000 NEF files (mostly family photos).  I want to export them to a 2 TB external hard drive and then continue to import all new raw files in Aperture onto that same external hard drive.  I'm not sure how to do this?  I have all of the 29,000 photos back-ed up in an aperture vault on a 750 GB external drive so I feel relatively safe.  In other words, the originals and versions currently exist on my iMac internal hard drive and are backed up in an aperture vault on a portable hard drive; however, I want to have all my photos (with the existing edits) migrated/exported to an external hard drive to free up space on my iMac. Do I create a new library on an external disk?  If so, can I do that within Aperture using "Switch to new library" under File? Also, what is the safest way to get my originals and edits into that library. Is there a better plan than mine? thanks, Mike

Hi Mike,
I think Terence may have read your question too quickly.  I know that some definition of terms will help you express your goal, and in turn help us show you how to attain it.  I recommend _not_ proceeding with Terence's recommendation until it is clear what you want to do.
"Photo" has no fixed or usable meaning in Aperture.  You camera records data every time you press the shutter release.  The recorded data is processed and saved in a file.  That file is almost always either a RAW file, or a JPEG.  RAW described a family of proprietary sensor-data formats.  There is no standard RAW format: every camera manufacturer uses their own formats, almost always varying them significantly from one camera to the next.  JPEG is a standard image-file format.  Computers can display image-format files.  Computers cannot display RAW files — it's just sensor data until the data is _converted_.  RAW converters (software) convert the RAW sensor data into a displayable image-format file.  OS X includes a RAW converter.  Aperture uses the OS X RAW converter.
Aperture can import RAW files, and image-format files (and movies).  Once imported, the imported file is called an Original.  Importing a file creates a record in Aperture's database, and also creates a text-format file of instructions telling Aperture how to modify the imported file in order to create the Image.  Images are what you see in the Browser and in the Viewer.  The initial text-format file is null — the instructions say, in essence, "don't do anything to the Original, just display it (after converting it if needed)".  This text file is called a Version.  (Aperture also calls, wrongly and confusingly, imho, the Image you see a Version.)
Aperture is a database.  Each record in the database points to a unique Version (a text file), and an Original.  There can be many Versions (and Images) for any one Original.
You can store your Originals wherever you want.  Aperture makes it easy to relocate them, or store them inside your Library, any time you want.  They do not have all be in the same place.  The drives they are on don't even have to be on-line for you to use many functions in Aperture (if your Originals are off-line, you cannot adjust, export, or print Images).
Your Versions (the text files) must be stored in your Library.  You cannot move them.
Your storage strategy thus focuses on two things:
- where to store your Aperture Library, and
- where to store each Image's Original.
Many users run out of storage space on their system drive at some point.  The commonly-recommended response is to re-locate some of your Originals to an external (or non-system) drive.  Alternatively, you might decide to move your Library to an external drive.  Or both.
What you do depends on your needs.  With the information you've given, I recommend that you relocate your Originals to your dedicated external drive, and leave your Library on your system drive.  Select the Images whose Originals you with to relocate, and run the Aperture command "File ▹ Relocate Originals ... ", and select your external drive as the destination.
You might then continue to import as you've been doing, that is, storing your new Originals on your system drive.  When it starts to get full again, just select the Images with managed Originals ("managed" means "stored in the Aperture Library"), and again run the relocate command.  You can filter your Images by whether the Image's Original is Managed or Referenced ("referenced" means "stored outside the Aperture Library").  Use the Filter HUD Rule "File Status".
Note that Aperture's Vault _does not back up Referenced Originals_!  You must back them up yourself, using software other than Aperture.

—Kirby.

It wont let me drag folders when it did before to my external hard drive, is this to do with permissions or admin?? How do I change this so it works as I need to back up my system. All I want to do is drag them in, it comes up with a grey circle with a minus sign in it. Have used this hard drive before and it worked find. I was told the system on Os has been updated to be more secure.

Hi, thanks for your reply, i think i now know what the problem is, having checked how the maxtor EHD is formatted, it revealed that it is formatted as NFTS, i can read the files on my imac but cant move files on to the EHD from my imac, the EHD is also used on a windows vista machine, is it possible to read and write to this EHD using both Mac OS and windows, i use this EHD for image files only.
As you found out OS X can read files from at HFTS drive however it cannot natively write to it. However if you still wish to write to it you can download and install NTFS-3G. Here is a link to it, that shoudl take care of the problem.

  • How do I combine an iTunes library on an external hard drive (laptop) with an iTunes library on an external hard drive on my PC?

How can I combine the iTunes library on an external hard drive (hooked to laptop) with  the iTunes library on an external hard drive (hooked to PC) so that both external HD's and both laptop and PC have all the music on each one?

no need to create a secondary library - too troublesome, IMHO. you can spread your library over as many drives you can connect to your Mac (wired or wirelessly):
    iTunes > preferences > advanced.
point iTunes media folder location to the external
on the same tab, ensure the copy files ... when adding option is checkmarked
    okay out of preferences
highlight the content to be moved in iTunes and right-click
select consolidate files from the pop-up menu
wait for the process to finish
when done, you may delete the original files from your boot drive.
alternatively, you could move the whole shabang to the external HD:
copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music or media folder) from <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music to the external, launch iTunes while holding the option(⌥) key, click on choose library when prompted, and select the iTunes folder you copied to the external.
when done, be sure to point iTunes media folder location to the external so that new additions to your library will be put there. also, you need to make sure the external is mounted on your desktop before you fire up iTunes.

i am using for first time the time machine and an external hard drive because I want to erase my macbook and start from zero files. Am i keeping my files in the portable hard disk when I will connect it again with the macbook or the time machine will erase all?
I would like to know if after I erase all my data, empy hard drive inside the macbook, the time machine will erase all my files that I have saved in my "WD "My passport" external hard drive

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Time Machine has to erase the external disk in order to make backups. Before setting Time Machine up, copy the files of your external disk to the hard disk of the Mac in order not to lose them, and then, set up Time Machine. The first backup will start automatically.

  • I want to create a second library with the same account on a separate hard drive....

    Hi,
I am running out of room on my iMac to store all of my iTunes music and video. I want to create a second library with the same account on a separate hard drive. Will iTunes Match match both libraries ? Will I be able to acess both libraries from all my devices? Can iTunes Match merge them together so I can have easy access to everything?
    Thanks for any advice.

Unfortunately, you can't.  The primary address for your iCloud account must be a non-Apple email account.  The only exception to this is for former MobileMe subscribers who migrated to iCloud when MobileMe closed, which was 18 months ago.

I have an imac 2009 the disk drive is damaged and I have lost the passwords I need to reset passwords I tried booting with a macosx disk from an external hard drive but did not read the drive how else can I reset password ?
I have a 2012 mac book pro can I use that to connect with firewire and load osx that way? and how woudl I do that?
    Thanks so much!

To what password are you referring? Do you mean your user account's admin password? Or do you mean the master password for File Vault or do you mean a Firmware Password?
    For an admin password:
    Forgot Your Account Password
    For Snow Leopard and earlier
Mac OS X 10.6- If you forget your administrator password
    For Lion/Mountain Lion
        Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow
instructions in the dialog window that will appear.
Or see Reset a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Password and
OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
If you cannot do the above then try this:
      1. Boot to Safe Mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-S keys until a black screen with white type appears.
      2. At the prompt, type the following commands pressing return after each command line:
         /sbin/fsck -yf
If you do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message then repeat this command until
you do.  If after seven tries you still do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message,
then the system is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.
         mount -uw /
         cd /private/var/db/netinfo
         mv local.nidb local.old
         rm ../.AppleSetupDone
         shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when the new owner starts up the computer it will send him/her to the startup wizard where he/she can start a new user without reinstalling.
This last method does not actually change a password. It simply removes the user accounts and lets you create an initial admin account as if the computer were new out of the box.
How to reset the OS X password without a startup CD:
Reboot into Single-user Mode. Enter the following and press RETURN after each command line
       1. Type fsck -fy
       2. Type mount -uw /
       3. Type passwd <username>
I have never tried this method myself.

  • I have recently purchased an iMac from the Apple store. I previously had a windows computer and I transferred all my important files and music from the old computer onto an external hard drive. I've plugged the hard drive in and I can't seem to locate it!

    Hi everyone,
Before I set up my new iMac, I transferred all my important files from my old windows computer (pictures, documents, iTunes etc) onto an external hard drive. I had no trouble using and locating my hard drive on my old computer, however I'm having great difficulty finding it on my iMac. The external hard drive is plugged in with all wires connected and correct. I've tried all the USB ports and I still can't locate it!
I just want to transfer everything from my hard drive to the iMac!
If anyone could help me locate and guide me through the process of using an external hard drive on an iMac, then that would be brilliant!

Try using Migration Assistant following this guide:

There is advice in this document for using Migration Assistant from Time Machine or other hard drive.

Strangely enough we can not see you so it really helps if you share with use exactly what you have, exactly what you did and details about the problem
what version of iPhoto and of the OS? What exact steps did you do? where are you seeing these "thousands of cascading photos" now and using what software and what exactly did you want to accomplish
The correct way to move your iphoto library to an external drive is to verify the drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journal) and then drag the iphotl library intact as a single entity to is
The correct way to move some or all of your photos is to select them in iphoto and export 9file menu ==> export  --  https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921 ) to the external drive

  • With Time Machine I have an external hard drive formatted with Mac

With Time Machine I have an external hard drive formatted with Mac. The record contained files windows. How to recover?
Serious mistake: to connect a Mac to an external drive with data (important!) Windows, the warning appears: "You want to use the disk for Time Machine?" Wrong button, so in 2-3 seconds, the disk is formatted. Now Mac "sees" the disc but empty, Windows does not see it under "My Computer" but in "Disk Management" is reported as "hard core", "healthy", "GPT protective partition" Is there a way to retrieve the files? Sorry for my English Thanks

  • Download the creative cloud apps to external hard drive?

    Hello,
My wife just purchased the creative cloud, but our home connection is horrible.
I need to download the huge files to an external hard drive here at work where we have a fast connection.
Then take that hard drive home to install them on her Mac laptop, where she can plug in her license information.
I went and tried/followed all the online adobe help, but there still was no place/menu I could find where I could *target the download* to.
This should be easy ... right?
    Please help.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi christiswimmer,
With respect to the issue that you are facing , my suggestion would be to download the product from Adobe.com/downloads as a trial version and save it over to your Hard Drive . Once you are at home , you can simply connect the same hard drive to the wife's mac and install the same . it would get converted to a full version during the installation as soon as you enter the Adobe id and Password .
    Hope this helps,

  • How do I change the desktop Icon for an external hard drive?  I have gone to "Get Info" and tried dragging and dropping  several formats of pictures and the icon changes to the generic image of that file type.

how can I change the desktop icon for an external hard drive.  Using LaCies and Dimple hard drives.

One of the things I've found with OS X (at least with Snow Leopard, which is my first excursion into OS X), is that all too often the thumbnail displayed on a file, whether a file created or one downloaded, is a false thumbnail. That is, when you do a Get Info on the file the icon in the upper left is the generic icon for that file type, rather than the thumbnail displayed in Finder. Makes it a bit difficult to copy.
Apparently Finder uses Preview in the background to generate the displayed thumbnail without actually creating one.
What I've resorted to doing, particularly with graphic images, is to process them with GraphicConverter - I have its prefs set to automatially add thumbnails and previews. With an individual file this means opening it in GC and doing a Save As. However, a much easier and faster way is when there are two or more such files; I put them in a common folder and drop the folder onto GC. GC then opens them in a catalog view, in the process adding real thumbnails and previews to each automatically. Doesn't take long to do several hundred files that way.

According to you youo did not do what I instructed - you said you imported the old library into th enew library which can easily take a 2000 photo library and turn it into 12,000 including two ro three versions of each photo pus all the face thumbnails
The correct procedure has NO importing involved
drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac

  • After iPhoto upgrade i can no longer access the photos stored on my external hard drive, after iPhoto upgrade i can no longer access the photos stored on my external hard drive

I was just about to order a photo book, using photos stored on an external hard drive. I organised the book and pressed 'buy'. IPhotos instructed me that I needed to upgrade and so I went on the ASpp store, bought the upgrade and installed as directed. I then used the iPhoto Library upgrader as directed.
After the iPhoto upgrade I can no longer access the photos stored on my external hard drive. I am able to access the photos stored on my internal hard drive - the remainder (including the photo album) seem to have vanished into thin air.
    Any suggestions please?

What format is the external drive?

I just purchased a new computer that runs windows 8 and it doesn't want to recognize the time capsule as an external hard drive (ie doesn't show up under my compter).  I've downloaded and run airport utility, but it seems to have a hard time finding the time capsule...maybe one out of 10 times it will find it.
What's more, when I look under network infrastructure under the control panel, it shows my Broadcom ADSL centurylink Router...so I'm wondering if my modem/router combo is overriding the router function on my timecapsule and the time capsule is not being used as a router...
    Any help much appreciated!

In this case the TC should be in bridge mode.
Win8 is still problematic. Try using ethernet instead of wireless. I think the drivers are poor still and it is well worth having a try via ethernet if you haven't already.
Otherwise you will need to wait for apple to release bonjour for windows 8 and airport utility.. which is not out yet.
Also make sure the windows is set to home, not work or public.. even turn off the firewall.
Open windows explorer and type the TC ip address into the address bar.. (none of which is perhaps the same.. I gave away windows at vista.. shudder)

If both have Firewire ports then you can accomplish your goal by using Target Disk Mode. If this is not possible then you can do using an external drive or if you have a local network connect both to your network and use filesharing between the two computers.
