Export as catalogue

I am starting the process of upgrading from LR3 to LR4. I have followed the recommendation in Martin Evening`s book and begun by using "export as cataloue. I have tried this 5 times but each time the program stops working after a couple of minutes. Any suggestions ?

I am always very nervous when I attempt an update as I have a lot of pix in the catalogue.
Consequently, I stopped the upgrading when I couldn`t update the catalogue.
So I am still at square 1.
If I cannot upgrade the catalogue, do I just go ahead with installing LR4 and then use the catalogue that was produced the last time I closed down LR3 ?

  • Clarifications on "syncing" systems -- i.e. exporting/importing catalogues.

If I want to simply "sync" two computers so that changes or additions I made on one system will be incorporated on the other, do I need to first "export" a catalogue and then import it onto the other system, or can I simply "import" directly without first exporting a separate catalogue? In other words, does the current catalgue (what used to be referred to as a "library") exist as something that can be imported onto another system without first requiring a separate "export"?
Also, what happens if changes are made on BOTH systems when I do the import? What happens if changes have been made to the same shot on both systems? I've looked over various literature on this subject, but I haven't been able to determine how robust LR is at dealing with all the various permutations in this regard.
    Thanks,
    Larry

    >As I understand it, a catalog is a catalog, and you are always in a catalog. No need to export unless you want to create a subset.
Can anyone confirm this? A similar questions was answered in another thread saying you could not do this, so now I've received two answers that directly contradict each other, and don't know which is accurate.
I'm looking for the easiest way to "sync" two systems where changes may have been done on BOTH systems to different pictures. The end result should be that both systems have all the same information on them. I'm still unclear what the specific steps would be to achieve this.
On this note, what if the same photo had new edits on BOTH systems? Is there a way of syncing "both ways" so that both systems ended up showing all the edits from BOTH systems in different snapshots or virtual copies or ???

  • Exporting 2007 Catalogue to external HD

Hi all, have just "done the deed" and exported all my 2007 work to an external HD via export catalogue, check export negatives etc. Before I delete the images from my internal drive to make space for 2008 work, how do I check whether the catalogue on external HD is " working properly". The issue here is that I need to access some of my last years work on a regular basis.
What is the correct way to access that catalogue, do I Import it or just open it from the file menu?
    Kind regards
    Kevin Wright

    From Adobe's technote:
    >>Lightroom Database.lrdb.lock (the file that prevents data from being overwritten inadvertently)
    and
    >>Note: There is no lock file on Windows. The application cannot be opened by more than one person simultaneously, and libraries cannot be opened on a network share, so there is no reason to have a file that locks the application.
The technote describes the locations of Lightroom's files on Mac and Windows. It may be out-of-date (it is for versions 1.0 and 1.1), but this is the link

  • How do I export my catalogue to an external drive?

Hello there. I'm running Lightroom on a comparatively new Macbook Air, and all of my photo files (a mishmash of folders from old machines + Dropbox automatic uploads) are really starting to clog up the tiny hard drive. I want to (a) move my Lightroom catalogue and all associated assets to an external drive while (b) still backing up everything to Dropbox and Google Drive for safekeeping.
How would I go about doing that? I assume I'd start by de-syncing my Dropbox photo folder from my Macbook Air.

You can move all the photos in your operating system and then reconnect in Lightroom via
Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders
Do not use this as an opportunity to rearrange your folders or photos. just move them in the exact same hierarchy.

  • How do I find my files in an exported catalogue

I have exported a catalogue using my mac.
I can't find the files inside the expected catalogue.
They are showing in lightroom but with an exclamation mark in top right corner saying files are missing.
When I use he locate files they aren't showing in the lightroom catalogue saved to my mac.
Help please I've lost a full recent shoot

Images are not "in" the catalog. Images are in folders on the computer. If you exported a catalog, and are trying to use it on another computer, then you need to copy the images to that new computer as well. If you are using this exported catalog on the same computer as the original, then that could indicate that you have renamed or moved the images after the catalog was created. Please provide more detail of how you are using this new catalog that you exported. Here is a link to instructions telling you how to find missing photos.

  • Catalogue Export / Import messes Folders structure

    Hi,
I've trawled the net, searched forums and been told to go away by Adobe so I'm hoping someone here might be able to help.
We have a network drive where we store clients photos/images. When visiting a client we'll export as catalogue onto a MacBook. Whilst at the clients we review the images and make some adjustments to crop, color or whatever or maybe just some metadata info. We then return and import the amended catalogue back into Lightroom but when doing so Lightroom adds extra Folders into LR or doesn't put the folder back where it should be like this:
Network Drive is on Volume CPhotos which shows as a folder in Lightroom like this:
    CPhotos
    -ABC Client
    --Shoot1
    --Shoot2
    -DEF Client
    --Shoot 1
    --Shoot 2
    etc
We export ABC Client and folders to the Macbook. When we return we import the ABC Client catalogue LR does one of these two things to the folder structure so we're left with this:
    CPhotos
    -ABC Client
    --Shoot1
    --Shoot2
    ---CPhotos
-----Shoot 1 (if we've performed an edit at the client on these images)
    -DEF Client
    --Shoot 1
    --Shoot 2
    etc
OR if we remove ABC Client from LR before we import we get an extra CPhotos folder added with the client placed as a subfolder like this:
    CPhotos
    CPhotos <--Extra CPhotos folder
--ABC Client <-- ABC Client now lives under CPhotos/CPhotos
    ---Shoot1
    ---Shoot2
    -DEF Client
    --Shoot 1
    --Shoot 2
    etc
Removing the ABC Client before the import is the best option because we just drag it back to where it should be and delete the now empty extra CPhotos folder but in the long run it's just a pain and a time waste.
Any ideas warmly received - maybe there's something I'm missing or doing wrong?
    Thanks for reading!
    Chris

"We then return and import the amended catalogue back into Lightroom but when doing so Lightroom adds extra Folders into LR or doesn't put the folder back where it should be like this:"
It sounds like, when you do the import from catalog, you are importing the catalogue with the images. The steps would normally be:
    1. Export from catalog, including negatives, and use this on the other machine
    2. On other machine, export as catalog, but not including the negatives
    3. On main machine, import as catalog.
In step 3, LR is importing a catalogue into your main one, and figures out the pics aren't where they were on the other machine. It then looks around its own database for the files and matches them up.

  • Export Catalogue fails to function - LR3

The command File > "Export as Catalogue" fails to function. No dialogue panel pops up. No error message. Nothing - whether one or more images are selected.
LR3.6 on PC platform   XP Pro SP3
This only happens in a limited number of folders. Generally the command works in all other folders.
I have tried optimising catalogue, forcing a catalogue backup, re-synchronising folder, moving the images into a new different folder, moving back into original folder.
If I create a new folder and move the files (dragging) into the new folder, still no difference.
If I move files back again, still no difference.
If I move files into a folder that does not suffer this problem, then Export as catalog works normally,
If I then move back to original folder command fails again.
Up to this point I figure the catalogue is corrupted.in regards "folder" as opposed to file data. Some folders have disabling "Export to Catalogue".
If I rename faulty folder, still no change of problem.
    However,
If Library > "Show fotos in sub folders"   is toggled ON, then the command works as normal,  This is not my usual mode, and when I toggle this option OFF, Export to Catalogue fails as before
This problem goes un-noticed so catalogue backup recovery is not viable.
What is the solution for repairing the catalogue or eliminating the bug?

  • Exported catalogue has lost some collections - bug?

    Hi,
After recently exporting a catalogue (of all photos in that catalogue) and then importing the catologue into a fresh lightroom catalogue it has lost several (about a quarter) of the collections. This is a bit of a bugger as a fair bit of work went into creating them. Anyone got any clues as to how to prevent this?
    Thanks,
    Tom

Not so with web gallery collections or print collections. Export a catalog, then open it and they are missing.
    See previous post:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/692631?tstart=90
Makes syncing catalogs between computers difficult. I guess you can change the web gallery and print collections to regular collections, but why have them if they do not work as expected.

  • CS5 XML/HTML Export of images

    Hi,
I have to export a catalogue via XML to get it processed by our CMS. As well I also need all the pics iside the INDD for web use. The export of the tagged items weorks perfect, including the formatted images.
    BUT:
All pics come in their printed size in 72 DPI, which is not enough for me. I need 600 pix width for each pic.
Has anyone done this already? Is the a screw I can turn to chage the output size of images, when exporting XML or HTML?
    Thanx a lot in advance

  • Lightroom - metadata auto-save vs. export

    Hello!
I understand that with auto-save XMP metadata on, most of an image's Lightroom changes will be auto-saved with the original photograph file whereever it may be.
However, what I don't understand is whether when you export from Lightroom (not export a catalogue/folder, but export an image/some images) whether or not the Lightroom changes (e.g. brightness contrast, saturation, etc.) are considered part of the 'metadata' referred to in the export window.
Afterall, if you are exporting JPEGs, for instance, you are rendering the final (not the original), so why would you want the Lightroom changes metadata because you can't use the Lightroom changes XMP data to go from a final to go back to an original image, can you?!
    Thank you!
p.s. This article (http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/metadata-wrangler) indicates that the XMP CRS block is automatically include with the Lightroom export window, right?

When you export an image the metadata and develop settings are written to the files XMP header. However, the develop settings are for reference only i.e. they are seen but not acted upon by applications such as Bridge. For example, if you open an exported JPEG with develop adjustments into Camera Raw  it will show all the sliders at zero rather than the values in XMP. The reason being that the JPEG is already fully rendered file, the develop settings in XMP cannot be undone without creating a completely new file.
Metadata and develop settings saved to XMP differs in that the file has not yet been rendered with the develop settings. So, opening the file in Camera Raw show the sliders at the same values as written into XMP.
p.s. This article (http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/metadata-wrangler) indicates that the XMP CRS block is automatically include with the Lightroom export window, right?

  • New Catalogue from selected images in other Catalogues

    Hi Guys,
I have several Catalogues in Lightroom 2.5. I would like to select several images from each Catalogue and put them into a new Catalogue.
The reason – In each Catalogue I have flagged the images that I want to print. I want to create a new Catalogue with only the flagged images from the other Catalogues in order to do a contact print or multi images on one sheet of paper.
I know that I could create one Master Catalogue, select the flagged images and then print but I would like to just have a Print Catalogue that I could add images to, from other Catalogues.
Its there a way to do this ?
    Thanks for your help.
    John

In each catalogue, select the images and select File > Export as Catalogue. When you're finished, create a new catalogue, and then use File > Import as Catalog for each of the exported ones.
When you're finished doing all this, do put some time aside to think what else you could have done with all the time you've just used up. With a single master catalogue, you would already have been admiring your prints and having a coffee, with your feet up on the desk too.

  • Exported Library to External HD, error in attempt to link to files on HD

    Hello,
I recently began using lightroom and stored the files on the local drive of my macbook pro (current os) until I ran out of space. Exported the catalogue to an external HD, then deleted the files from the local drive. As I tried to import the .lrcat file associated with the export to the external HD and received this error:
"Can not import from this catalog at this time. The catalog is either in use by another copy of Lightroom or was closed improperly. If it was closed improperly, please consider doing an integrity check when opening."
I am not running LR on any other computers so I figure Lightroom was "closed improperly". However I cannot figure out what to do and tech support will not help me without the serial number which I cannot get as I am travelling. Any advice would be sincerely appreciated.
    Jordan

If you indeed exported the catalogue to the external drive, you don't need to import it. Simply double-click on the copy of the catalogue that's on your external drive.
By the way, your serial number is available in the Help/System info menu item.

  • Cant edit photos after exporting

Hello all. Relatively new to Lightroom here so Im not sure if this is a dumb question or not.
I imported about 220 photos and worked on just about 20 to 25 of them. I then selected those 25 from my collection and exported them to a folder on my PC so I could then import them into Picasa.
After doing that, I returned to Lightroom to edit more from that collection but could no longer do so. I couldnt make any changes to the ones I previously worked on, but more importantly, I couldnt make any changes to any of the ones I hadnt even touched yet. When you export photos from a folder, does Lightroom automatically prohibit you from changing anything else? It seems the only way I can bypass this problem is just to delete the folder and re-import the photos from my camera again, creating a new folder.
Am I missing something? How can I go back and edit photos after exporting? Can it be done?
    Thanks!

    Hi Judy
On the bottom left of the left tool bar there are two buttons. Import and Export. I exported my photos using the Export button. When you do that, the screen that comes up prompts you to set up an export location on your C drive. So I exported the photos to a folder I set up.
I did not set up a catalogue or export any catalogue.
I seriously doubt that Picasa had any effect on the folders in Lightroom. The two software application are totally separate. You dont directly transfer photos from LR to Picasa. You need to export from LR first to a location on your PC then Import from that file on your PC into LR. So I dont see how Picasa could effect the photos that are in LR.
