Export/Convert to h.264 results in jerky video in WMP

System: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 EN
In Premiere Pro CS4 and Adobe Media Encoder CS4 I have problems exporting video to h.264.
Please download the sample file here:
http://www.tsxn.com/storage/transfer/premiere_h264.zip
Source:
  H.264 HDTV Testvideo (e.g. "01-TestVideo_Original_h264.MOV")
Profile: 1920x1080 fps 30, square pixel, progressive
Destination:
For Testing purpose, just converting the original within the Adobe Media Encoder
  Profile: same as Source
1) The original source file plays fine using any player, so the hardware of my test systems (3 computers) is ok
2) When exporting the Video to H.264 (e.g. "02-TestVideo_Convert_h264.mp4") the resulting video is jerky in Windows Media Player and Quicktime
3) Strange: When converting the jerky result video again (e.g. "03-TestVideo_ConvertAgain_wmv.wmv") , but now into WMV, it plays fine again
Can anyone confirm this problem on his system?
It seems to me that Windows Media Player and Quicktime enforce their own h.264 decoder which has problems playing Premiere Exports. VLC Media Player and the Adobe media player for example seems to have no problem at all.
Any help is highly appreciated!
Thank you
Chris

Jim, thanks for testing.
My concerns are about a)distribution and general b)compatibility.
a) When videos are distributed most of the users will probably try to open the files with Windows Media Player. So it is not a good start to have fresh exported h.264 videos which won't run fine with the 'main' player on windows
b) I am wondering if the Problems with Windows Media Player may also be a sign of a general compatibility issue of the h.264 video itself
At least in case b) Adobe would have to look into this.
Here is another test video:

Thank you

These Players seem to play the file properly:
    - VLC Media Player
    - Media Player Classic Home Cinema
    - Adobe media player
So how can one be sure that the Premiere h.264 exports are just fine and the only problem is on decoder side? However, I feel very uncomfortable not being able to play the h.264 files within Windows Media Player 12, which has uses the built-ind Windows 7 h.264 decoder.

    Hello Harm,
let me add my comment of another discussion:

And in general there maybe a bug in the MS h.264 decoder.

  • DV clips look bad, good when converted to H.264 in QuickTime and reimported

    Still a problem after 7.0.1:
DV camera -> iMovie 08 -> looks bad when playing and exporting/sharing
DV camera -> iMovie 08 -> "reveal in finder" -> clip opened in QuickTime -> looks good -> export as H.264 -> re-import to iMovie 08 -> looks good when playing and exporting/sharing.
In plain words: Importing DV clips from my DV camera into iMovie gives bad results when playing and exporting/sharing. Have tried everything, but the clips look blurry and not sharp at all. The actual DV clip in the events folder looks sharp and clear.
If I take the very same DV clip from the events folder ("reveal in finder"), open it in QuickTime, export it as H.264 and then re-import to iMovie 08, it looks brilliant, retaining the quality the DV clip in the events folder has.
Why can't the DV clips look good in the first place? What is it that iMovie 08 does to these poor clips? Some have suggested re-encoding, re-rendering and so on, but if I do just that in QuickTime and re-import it to iMovie 08, it still looks razor sharp and crystal clear. No reason that iMovie 08 shouldn't handle the DV file in the same manner.
Some have suggested that this is because iMovie 08 internally re-encodes to AIM or H.264, enabling edits with different kinds of formats, but if I do this myself in QuickTime before importing to iMovie 08, the problem isn't there!
If this is difficult to achieve, why not add the option of importing from a DV camera as H.264 and not DV? That would make my day!
(I have posted this to Apple using the feedback menu item in iMovie 08.)
    (Background here in these threads:)

Sample clips in Apple TV format here:

iMovie '08 stores rendered projects in H.264 form. This happens when you render to the Media Browser. The rendered file(s) (you can have several different sizes) are in the iMovie '08 project package. The original flies in your Events folders stay in whatever format they were in.
Yes, the movies exported to the Media Browser use the H.264 format, the same as iMovie HD 5/6 did when we exported using the presets Email, Web, Web Streaming and CD-ROM. They were all H.264 too. Apple is obviously putting the (powerful) H.264 to good use to prepare movies for Web pages and other purposes.
As you know, the Full Quality export in 5/6 was to the project's native format, which varied according to the type of project. For DV projects, that was DV video. Everything was converted to DV when imported into the project, and to preserve the original quality we could export to a Full Quality DV movie.
There is nothing like that in iMovie 7, at least that I've seen. As you said, nothing is converted to a "native format" when imported to the project. (Still images are added to the project's single Apple Photo - JPEG "Still Images" movie, which is a nice twist.)
So I think of iMovie 7 as having no "native" format, but a nicely-designed path for using H.264 as the delivery format. The Media Browser — a virtual library of movies with no shared place — is a nice invention.
When I export slideshow movies in DV format out of FotoMagico I always select 'Best' and it DOES make a difference in iDVD.
I think of iMovie 7's problem with DV as more profoundly flawed. Exporting ANY DV video that's in the project to DV or ANY OTHER format is messed up. It's the handling of the DV inside iMovie that's messed up, not just the export to DV.
My guess is — and it's only a guess — that FotoMagico's Best setting adjusts the content of the image delivered for iDVD. Put another way, it prepares an image that works best with iDVD's own encoding algorithms.
One long-standing diappointment I've had with iLife is that Apple has never coordinated the image it prepares for iDVD with what(ever) iDVD does best. It's as if the programmers never talk to each other. iMovie engineers have never asked the iDVD engineers how best to deliver the image to deliver the best quality on the DVD.
Given Apple's emphasis on H.264, one would think that iDVD would be written to embrace any H.264 video and deliver great quality on the DVD. It doesn't. And with iLife '08 it doesn't even embrace iMovie's own DV exports!
I suppose Blu-Ray will change all that, but for now we're stuck with a version of iLife that can't deliver a quality DVD of our home movies.

  • Can the author please send me an exported version using H.264 video codec

Seems as thou I am having similar problems as other clients are having with movies. My computer guy asked me to ask you this question in the subject line. I have no idea what this means. I sent him a video, he has sound but no video, and he has tried multiple applications, but the results are the same. No video. So, I am suppose to ask the author to send you an exported version using H.264 video codec???? Please help get this resolved!

So, you need to re-export it, this time choosing H.264. What software are you using?

These "Share" files are accessed and used by the Create Disc app.
Create Disc is buried in the FCP X package.
    Applications>FCP X>Show Package Contents>Contents>Plugins>Compressor>Compressor Kit.bundle>Show Package Contents>Embedded Apps>Create Disc
I'm wondering if having the Compressor Application on a Mac makes a difference to having just FCP X on a Mac and the use of the Sharing feature.
I have Compressor loaded and find that DVD and Bluray burns from Share without any glitches as some are experiencing.

    Hello,
I'm trying to convert an Ultra Search result into a ColdFusion query.
There's a java class for CF which turns a java result into a CF query, coldfusion.sql.QueryTable(java.sql.ResultSet), but is there anything which will convert an Ultra Search result to a java result or a CF query?

You can't cast from a character to a String. That doesn't work.
However, in a fit of being helpful.
Look at the constructors for the String object in the API

  • Now PrP cant export to QT H.264 or QT DNxHD

I spent last week troubleshooting with a talented Adobe team member my systems inability to export from ANY CS6 apps to QT H.264. In all cases the Media Core shut down and it  failed. I decided to work around it by starting to use MP4 H.264 as an alternative.
Today I tried to export a project for mastering purposes . PrP will now not export to QT DNxHD either.
Not being able to export from my HP Z820 to DNxHD (which is an industry standard codec required by many vendors) means that I cannot use this system for editing with clients anymore.
As a side bar, another editor who owns an HP Z800 series is also experienceing the inability to export to QT H.264 with all CS6 apps.

Good questions all addressed by my extensive testing with Adobe last week.
    - If you select H.264 under Format instead of QuickTime in the Export Settings dialog, can you export to H.264 without issues?
(MP4)  H.264 which is what you are referring to exports fine.
    - Does it happen with Export *and* Queue or only when using Export or Queue?
It happens with Export and Queue. It affects PrP, AE , AME and MPEG Streamclip
    - Can you export to DNxHD from After Effects?
No, same fail happens as in PrP , AME and MPEG Streamclip.
    - Can you export to DNxHD from AME if you queue up a file via File > Add Source?
    Nope.
    - When did this start to happen?
Hard to say since I just made the transition from Mac to Windows with lots of stuff going on. I think maybe after a recent Windows update, but I cant swear to that.
    - What version, 6.0.2 or 6.0.3?
    6.03
    - What version of QT is installed on your computer? (I use 7.6.6)
The most recent 7.72 but I uninstalled and tried 7.6 as well.
This problem apears to not be unique to Adobe apps, but systemic since it affects MPEG Streamclip as well.

  • Exporting SlideShows in H.264 Format?

    Hi,
I was just trying to export an iPhoto Slideshow to Quicktime H.264. Currently i see only Export -> Large (720 x 480). Is any way to export it has a HD Quality Quicktime film?

    Hi Alex,
I am not sure if you can export a slideshow to H.264 within iPhoto. I do know that you can open the exported slideshow with Quicktime Pro and export it is H.264. By the way, it does a fantastic reduction of file size and the quality is great.

You could try Handbrake, it works quite well.

Unless you held down the Command key when dragging the iPhoto Library package to the flash drive you only copied the library.  How is the flash drive formatted?  If it was not OS X Extended (journaled) the integrity of the library's internal structure was probably compromised.
If you don't have a current backup of your library do the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.
    2 - run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

  • Creating a cropped h.264 - 640x240 iPod compatable video from NTSC DV

Question: Does anyone know how to crop a 720x480 DV, 23.98fps video from Final Cut, to a 640x240, h.264 QuickTime file that is compatible with the iPod and TV?
I've been at this for two weeks, combing the forums for an answer to this problem, and have found nothing.
I have a weekly podcast that features 4 hosts. The standard 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratios on my camera are not wide enough, so I have been masking the video in quicktime to 2.35:1 and using the "export for iPod" option under Export->QuickTime Conversion ending up with a masked 640x480. With the release of the TV I have been trying to create a 640x240 QuickTime video so it will fill the entire width of a TV as well as the iPod.
The show is shot with a DVX100A in 24PA, captured into FCP at 23.98 advanced pull-down, and edited all with the the 23.98 advanced pull-down easy setup.
Everything works fine until I try to crop the video and save it as a h.264, 640x240, iPod/TV compatible video. The big problem is finding the h.264 base profile and the AAC-LC (Low-Complexity setting), except the export MPEG-4 option in QuickTime Pro. Also, all the 3rd party apps I have tried do not crop the video and instead squish it vertically.
Does anyone know how to crop a 720x480 DV, 23.98fps video to 640x240 h.264 that is compatible with the iPod and TV?
Here is everything I have tried:
    1. Export->Quicktime Conversion->QuickTime Movie
Problem: Does not work with iPod
    2.Export->Quicktime Conversion->MPEG-4
Problem: Cropping does not work, video comes out squished
    3.Export->Compressor
Problem: Any cropping of the video results in horrible video quality
4.Dropping sequence into a 640x240 sequence before export
Problem: Same as 3, poor video quality
I also tried all of the following 3rd party apps with a self contained QT file:
    iSquint/Visual Hub
    Problem: Cannot crop without squishing
    ffmpegx
Crop and Auto Crop do not crop, squish video
    MPEG Stream Clip
Cannot choose baseline h.264 or AAC-LC
All of these programs can export a 640x240 video, but iSquint/Visual Hub/ffmpegx all produced vertically squished video instead of cropping. MPEG streamClip was able to do everything correctly, just unable to select baseline and low-complexity profiles for h.264 and AAC respectively.
    PowerMac Dual G5 2.3   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   FCP 5.1 Studio

    3.Export->Compressor
Problem: Any cropping of the video results in horrible video quality
Can you detail what exacts steps you're taking here? I export anamorphic 720x480 files (usually matted to 2.35:1) using the iPod setting all the time and, provided I specify the crop amounts, correct the frame size (ie. make it 640x272) and, most importantly, turn Frame Controls on, I get excellent quality.
Of course, having said that, you're trying to output a 640x240 file, so I'm guessing you're using a different setting in Compressor? Not the iPod preset?

Hi, recently I got Canon 70D mostly to use it to make videos.
When I watched the videos they were choppy/jerky. I opened it in Windows Media Player, than i downloaded QuickTime and the same problem. I tried open it in Adobe Premiere and exported for YouTube H.264 avi (I always used this for my videos), and It didnt help. Video was still choppy/jerky.

    PNY NVIDIA QUADRO 2000 1GB
I use Windows 7 Proffesional, I tryied QuickTime7 (the newest one on apple website), Adobe Premiere Pro CS 6
    Please help
PS. I hope my English is good enough to describe my problem

So, i bought a new SD card 95MB/s sandisc, and the same effect.
I started playing with the camera and with FPS.
I found that the problem is in FPS.
    @ 1920 x 1080: 30 fps, 25 fps, 24 fps
    @ 1280 x 720: 60 fps, 50 fps
    @ 640 x 480: 30 fps, 25 fps
When i record a video in 1280x720 60fps its nice and smooth, any other option is choppy. So now im confuse how people record Full HD 1920x1080 30fps (or less) and its smooth? Why any other camera can record in les then 30fps and its smooth?
For example why this video is smooth and was recorden in 24fps?
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJel8dJuPH8
I know they used 5D mkiii and some other cameras but still 24fps, action movie plaing nice. My 30fps can record simply card moving on a street.
Do you guys have an idea what is wrong?
