Export DV to H.264 via 'Apple TV'

I exported a DV (not HDV) movie from FCP X for use on my iPod. It converted a 720*576 movie to 768*576. Why? We all like slim people, but I'd like my aspect ratio to remain intact. Is there a better way of compressing a DV movie?

FCP X uses Non-square-pixels (DV-PAL 4:3 = 720 x 576)
This translates to Square-pixels (DV-PAL 4:3 = 768 x 576)
Use HD (720 / 1080) for your projects, pixel difference is not applicable...

Need advice about H.264 and Apple ProRes 422.

When exporting a "master file" I can encode the video as H.264 or Apple ProRes 422 (etc). The H.264 is more compressed but still in 1080p? Does this mean that I do not have to compress the file with "Compressor"? What is the advantage of using ProRes and what is the advantage of using H.264? I want of course the files to be as small as possible but still at the best quality. Any advice?

ProRes is an editing format. If you are archiving a finished project, you can create an extremely high quality "print" with H.264. ProRes 422 will use approximately three times as much memory. ProRes 422(HQ) roughly four times and ProRes 4444 up to 10 times (compared to the size of the file FCPX will export as H.264).
FCPX exports (shares) H.264 in highest quality (over 45Mbits/sec [if needed] for 1080p), you have no options to adjust for smaller files (or lesser quality from FCPX.)
To get "as small as possible," you'll need to learn more about compressing video. As a comparison (to FCPX), YouTube limits a maximum bandwidth of 8Mbps (used to be 5Mbps -- I *still* compress to 5Mbps before uploading.) Even compressed this highly, H.264 provides excellent results. [Compressing in ProRes is going from 4444 down to 422 Proxy (not to be confused with proxy media used in FCPX which is 1/4 resolution, i.e. 960x540 for 1080, ProRes 422.) You cannot compress each of the different ProRes flavors individually.]
You'll need other software to compress further than FCPX. I use Quicktime 7 Pro. Compressor is another way to go (Compressor will let you set "compression markers" so you can vary the bitrates through various sections of your work). The way to figure out your compression level is to find a section (less than a minute) with the highest motion high contrast (and/or changing gradients) and export at different bitrates. Watch for "jpeg artifacts" (blocking) and once you've gotten past that, that's the bitrate you should compress to. (I've had some clips that required at least 20Mbps.) It just takes a little practice to get a feel for it.

After editing in FCP X, I am sharing through Master File to an external Hard Drive. It is only for playing in computer or in Sony T.V. I don't need the content back for editing. In settings, should I choose video codec as H.264 or Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) ? Thanks

DVD files in their native format are not supported on the Apple TV. The following formats are.

Now PrP cant export to QT H.264 or QT DNxHD

I spent last week troubleshooting with a talented Adobe team member my systems inability to export from ANY CS6 apps to QT H.264. In all cases the Media Core shut down and it failed. I decided to work around it by starting to use MP4 H.264 as an alternative.
Today I tried to export a project for mastering purposes . PrP will now not export to QT DNxHD either.
Not being able to export from my HP Z820 to DNxHD (which is an industry standard codec required by many vendors) means that I cannot use this system for editing with clients anymore.
As a side bar, another editor who owns an HP Z800 series is also experienceing the inability to export to QT H.264 with all CS6 apps.

Good questions all addressed by my extensive testing with Adobe last week.
- If you select H.264 under Format instead of QuickTime in the Export Settings dialog, can you export to H.264 without issues?
(MP4) H.264 which is what you are referring to exports fine.
- Does it happen with Export *and* Queue or only when using Export or Queue?
It happens with Export and Queue. It affects PrP, AE , AME and MPEG Streamclip
- Can you export to DNxHD from After Effects?
No, same fail happens as in PrP , AME and MPEG Streamclip.
- Can you export to DNxHD from AME if you queue up a file via File > Add Source?
Nope.
- When did this start to happen?
Hard to say since I just made the transition from Mac to Windows with lots of stuff going on. I think maybe after a recent Windows update, but I cant swear to that.
- What version, 6.0.2 or 6.0.3?

- What version of QT is installed on your computer? (I use 7.6.6)
The most recent 7.72 but I uninstalled and tried 7.6 as well.
This problem apears to not be unique to Adobe apps, but systemic since it affects MPEG Streamclip as well.

H.264 for apple devices doesn't allow 48kHz audio!?

I guess the bigger question is: What's the difference between using the *h.264 for apple devices* file format and *Quicktime movie* with compression set to h.264?
Is there an actual difference in the algorithm? The documentation I've read claims that *h.264 for apple devices* is "low-complexity". Is this actually true? Is there any QT h.264 setting I can change to make it low-complexity?
Here's why: I'm trying to make an iPhone/iPod compliant video podcast and using compressor. I'd like the audio to match the original 48kHz audio coming from my movie. If I go the *h.264 for apple* route, the only audio option I have is bit rate.

Also, the *h.264 for apple* file format setting supposedly compresses the audio in the proper AAC-LC format. If I use *Quicktime movie* the only audio compression options that are close are AAC and AAC-LD.

To clarify, that wasn't a series of steps. That was two separate solutions to the problem.

I just went to Export QuickTime and iTunes reported it as Low-Complexity. I guess MPEG Streamclip exports all H.264s as low complexity because I couldn't see a specific option either.
...and I can't seem to find AAC-LC setting in MPEG Streamclip either.
I selected MPEG-4 AAC in the audio options. As I say, this was accepted by iTunes and synced to the device.

Do you get an error message when you try to export your file? Or, are you continually asked to subscribe when you try to convert a link? If it's the latter, it could be that you just haven't signed in to the app yet. Try this:
From the ExportPDF website, click Sign in at the upper-right corner, and log in to the service with your Adobe ID credentials. Now, when you click ExportPDF, you'll be prompted to select PDF files to export, instead of being asked to subscribe.
If you're receiving an error message when you try to log in, let us know what it is, and we can go from there.

FCP HD -- h.264 to Appl Intermediate Codec transcode questions

I'm editing footage shot with the Cannon T2i and using Final Cut HD (4.x).
I use Mpeg Streamclip to export h.264 to Apple Intermediate Codec.
My problem is, there is a noticable luminance drop in the resulting AIC files as compared to the h.264 original. The images seem to be at least a couple of stops darker. Am I doing something wrong?
Also, if I just drop one of the h.264 files directly into an h.264 timeline in FCP HD, I still see the same luminance drop.
Does anyone know why that would be?

I think I need a lesson in color profiles. Here is my current workflow:
1. JVC camera records to ProRes format.
2. I convert ProRes to AIC using MPEG Streamclip. I'd love to have Final Cut Studio, but I only own Final Cut Express. This makes it easier to edit.
3. When I play the AIC file and the ProRes file side by side using QuickTime X, the AIC file appears darker.
4. I import AIC files into FCE. It appears darker still while I'm editing it.
5. When I export from FCE to H.264 using QuickTime conversion, I get a brightness that is closer to the original ProRes file.
The problem with this is that while I'm editing in FCE, I'm not seeing the actual brightness.
So can you explain why I see the differences? I notice that the ProRes file has a Color Profile while the AIC files don't.

Ipad airplay (mirroring) via apple tv on samsung tv does not work at all

I try to mirror my ipad (version 3) with the latest IOS via apple tv (version 2, latest IOS) on to a samsung tv. It doens't work. Although i'm able to select airplay on my ipad it won't show on the samsung tv. Apple TV is working, i can watch movies etc. I tried all the things i found on google, like renaming the HDMI Input to PC etc.

I just rented a movie from my iPad2 and tried to play it through my ATV2 with AirPlay and same problem.... This is absurd guys. Apple I know there are copyright hoops to jump through but come on!! The whole pitch behind AirPlay and AppleTV was to make it easy to watch my purchases on my TV no matter what device they were on. Now I've got to hold my iPad in front of my face to watch a movie for nearly 3 hours!! And when I go to the support site I have no option other than to send an email to billing, screw this. I've not bought a DVD since I purchased my ATV2 over a year ago but if you guys are gonna pull this crap then what incentive do I have to continue the use of something that may or may not work the way it was advertised.
By the way, this is the first time I've had this problem because I normally rent straight off the ATV or my computer, which by the way I was considering replacing my PC with an iPad but looks like you guys aren't ready for me to make that kind of a switch.

Looking at your processor, you haven't got a compatible Mac. AirPlay Mirroring requires a Mid 2011 or newer iMac > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404
To mirror the Mac's display to the Apple TV, use an application like AirParrot or Beamer > http://www.airparrot.com
If you want to use AirPlay to send music or videos to the Apple TV, open iTunes and you should see the AirPlay icon on the iTunes toolbar

As far as I know you can't, which sort of makes sense, it seems logical to pause whatever you are doing while you take a phone call, which after all is the primary function of a phone.
