Export epub

Why when I export epub, another file is created, with the same name but a number like PRE635248052651 in the place of indd and the image in the original file became a gray rectangle? (I work with mac and ID CS6)
Before fhe creation of the epub I had a message that says that is a error - entry in summary 1 ignored (entry oy summary has alignement level incorrect).
Thank you

Anyone.............. reply this.

• Change Formatting of Footnote Indicator when Exporting EPUB, how? CS6

Hi,
Well, it's all quite impressive so far. CS6 ePub capabilities are miles
ahead of CS4, my last version, that's for sure.
One thing I'm stuck on, though, is how to change the formatting of
footnote indicators when exporting an ePub from InDesign.
No matter what I do, when the ePub is viewed in ADE, the footnote
indicator in the text comes out in blue, raised, and underlined. Also,
it screws up the leading of the paragraph line it's on -- because the
digit is raised, there line spacing above that line becomes bigger.
I've tried applying a charater style in InDesign to footnote indicators,
and I've played around with the settings in Document Footnote Option,
but no joy so far. It's always raised, blue, and underlined.
Anyone know how contorl the footnote indicator formatting in an exported
ePub without opening up the ePub in an external editor?
Thanks,
Ariel

Sigil is good to start with. As you grow more confident in editing e-pubs, you might want to ditch it though (it has its own personal set of annoying features).
Superscripts are prone to mess up paragraph spacing in HTML, and with everything said and done, that's just what an e-pub is. Nothing you can do inside InDesign, it takes raw CSS editing to "fix" it (meaning, to make it less conspicuous than the downright stupid default handling!).
But the blue-and-underlining bit is nothing you can fix -- for a real web page you can, but iBooks, for instance, INSISTS on having hyperlinks formatted that way, whether you like it or not.

• I'm finding it difficult creating exporting EPUB from pages. Help please!

Hello,
I'm finding it quite complicating on how to create and export EPUB files from pages so I can use these to send to iBooks on the iBook store.
Can someone please tell me in the simplest term, how to create and export an EPUB file in pages please???
Thank you!

That's fine. If I wrote my book on pages on iPad, could I send via email as pages doc to my mac then open in pages on my mac and then export to EPUB from my mac?
I like writing on the move.
Thanks

• Error in Pages when exporting ePub with image cover: Other images dissapear

That's it, if I insert an image in the first page, and select use first page as cover when exporting ePub, some (not all) other images inside the book will dissappear. I checked everything many times, and all the images are placed ok (not floating)...
Any idea about this issue?
Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the Apple forums
Exporting to ePub is new to Pages 4 with the 9.0.4 updaters. It appears that most Pages users don't have a need to export to ePub, so no replies. Sorry.
For Yvan,
The iPad Pages forum won't help in this situation. The iPad version of Pages can't export to ePub & Pages isn't involved in reading ePub files on the iPad.

• Exporting EPUB from InDesign CC not including line breaks

I am done with a book and have it formatted the way I want. I am exporting it to EPUB through InDesign CC and previewing it in iBooks and also through Kindle previewer. Everything is fine except for one thing... where I have created page breaks, the exported file is not including them.
I tried exporting to HTML just to see what it did and there is no line breaks there. I know its proprietary markup ( in kindle ) but I still would like to include them in a few specific places ( to mark seperations of chapters ).
In kindle this is the tag they say to use: <mbp:pagebreak />
In iBooks, I have not yet figured out how to create them, I am going to work on that today once I sort out the kindle version.
Is there any way to force it to include line breaks on export. Or alternatively, I could export to HTML but I am having trouble figuring out how to go back to the EPUB format from there and also it didn't include the fonts, so there was other issues to consider as I have a custom font I was using for the headers that looks really good and matches the font on the book cover as well... so I really want to keep that consistent if possible.
Are there any tricks or things I can try here to improve on my workflow and do a better job of seperating the chapters ?

Ok, I hadn't tested the advanced options out in the export menu. It works and does so on both the iBooks and Kindle previewer.. which is good news since that is really important to me to try and find a workflow I can update both of these formats from when I continue to work on my book.
The only strange part is that on some chapters its adding an extra blank page between the chapter and the next. What is odd is that it only happens on some of them (in the iBook reader only, the kindle previewer isn't doing this)
I am going to look into this more closely but its not a major deal as I would prefer a little seperation in the chapters anyways, its not really a bad thing. It is just hard to figure out why its doing this.

• "all documents are missing or failed to export" epub CS4

Hello all,
Here again with some problems. I'm exporting my book file to epub and this is the second time I am encountering this issue. The first time solving the issue seemed to happen at random, and so I come here because lightning rarely strikes twice!
First thing is first clearly this issue is generated by using a user generated TOC style as oppose to the default setting in the export dialogue.
Now I could use CS5 and perhaps arrive at a solution. However I want links (I have over 300 images) and I also want to use book file, as some elements require a pagebreak but hardly deserve the status of head 1. The credit page for instance. Nor do I want those elements specifically referred to in the TOC of the epub.
Either way I'd rather get to the meat and bones of this problem, because more than likely it exists in CS5 in some degree and I have yet to discover any other thread/post/blog/message in bottle that has resolved the issue. So if anyone who has experience with this issue, and has solved it or perhaps understands that about the TOC could create this issue with the export dialogue.
I'm beginning to think the issue lies with the hierarchy of the TOC, or atleast some structure that the indesign TOC system supports but the epub one doesnt. In my case I have several elements that exist on the levels.
head1 above
head 1
head2
head2nospace
head3
head3nospace
head1A from the annex
figurehead1
figurehead2
figurehead2several versions of the same style;
However I tried exporting the same book with the following levels:
head1
head2
head3
figurehead1
figurehead2;
and it still doesnt work. so it has nothing to do with the levels.
Alternatively I thought the issue might be cause in with some fonts (in my case the fonts used in my TOC are different than those of the body text, as such certain styles exist in the body that dont exist in the toc. When they are applied with the CharStyle they get applied to the TOC and bam you get the reflow error.) However I corrected this issue and it did nothing for me. Nor does removing the TOC text from the book. I thought this was creating some kind of flow error. It wasn't.
Before the issue is raised, I have syncronized all the styles thoughout the entire publication. The only overrides that exist are where I couldn't fit text into boxes in a single frame, so I just made the text smaller manually. Ive done this before it hasnt created an issue.
Anyone have any other suggestions?
Thanks!
Additionally, I saw that there was an update, and now indesign crashes after export. I also got an error the first time around talking about a pure javascript/function call error. They better release an update soon!

Any takers? Other people have to have encountered this issue before.
Edit:
Sorry everyone, and especially to Jongware, who already solved the problem for me before.
Solution:
Place all styles TOC in the root of the folders.

• Problems previewing InDesign CS5.5 exported EPUBs in Apple iBooks, on an iOS device.

I have EPUB Creation problems when I use my InDesign CS 5.5 document from my first EPUB book, as a template to create my other two EPUB books.
My customer gave me a job that forced me to learn how to do EPUBs – and I'm still learning. I created three books in Design CS 5.5, for fixed page PDF, with interactive table of contents and for exporting to a regular EPUB, with auto-reflow formatting and automated table of contents. These books were not created for print.
After I created the first one and successfully exported to an EPUB, that previewed fine in free Adobe Additions, I used the first InDesign CS 5.5 document as a template to create the other two publications. These books were around a hundred pages, or less, with little or no placed jpeg images except on the three books' covers, so I did not create a Book.indb for each publication. Each book is completed in single InDesign files with their own unique front cover art on their first page.
When my customer previewed the three books on his iPad, in iBooks, all three books show the cover of the first book, when you see them on the iBooks library shelf. Then when you open them, you see the correct cover for that specific book and the correct interior pages.
When I open each InDesign file and open the File Information tabbed dialog, I have a different document title entered for each of the three different books. When I export to EPUB, the EPUB Export Option dialog pops up and I have selected "Include Document Metadata." I entered the Publisher name and a separate Unique Identifier for each book, when I export.
After I emailed the three EPUBs to my iPod Touch, all three showed up in my iBooks library but when you see them on the library shelf they have the first book's cover on all three. So I have a redundant cover preview on the library bookshelf icons, in the iBooks app, running in Apple iOS.
I have two books by Elizabeth Castro about Creating EPUBs with InDesign. I'm going to read them some more, especially the part about preparing your EPUB for Apple iBooks, on iOS. But, I thought I would share my problem here to see if anyone has a solution for me. Thanks.

I often end up answering my own questions but I will do so again, this time, so that others can learn. When you are exporting to EPUB in InDesign CS 5.5, an EPUB Export Options diolog appears. Under "EPUB Cover," select "Use Existing Image file" and choose the actual file that was used on on the first page of the InDesign document, for the new book's cover.
This feature can cause inbedded human error if you use a completed Indesign book as a template to create other books because even though you placed a new cover at the beginning of the book, the Export options still has the cover file selected for the previous book you worked on.
I actually got the answer to my problem with the InDesign Help Menu, when InDesign CS 5.5 is launched.

• I cannot make Robohelp 9 export epubs

I have tried with very little succes all day making Robohelp 9 export to epub.
I am running techcomm 3.5 full version on win 7/64 bit.
I have opend a very small FrameMaker 10 book file with a front page, a toc and a 7 pages content file with some 7 or 8 pictures. I have created a Robohelp project and imported the book and done a toc. But I cannot export to epub. I have tried inserting the new jsx script, updated and tried different versions of 7zip and zip - all to no avail. Robohelp is no help and crashes on trying to create the epub file. It WILL create epub files of the sample content which came along with the install and it WILL work if I delete all pictures in my content - but this is hardly a real life scenario... I am utterly frustrated by this. Does anybody have a clue what is wrong here?
BTW I have read the post right before me with somewhat similar content - but it didn't seem to reach a conclusion

Thanks for the answers. I am beginning to like Robohelp. Still - I cannot figure the isf thing out. When I create a project I import Frame files. I create isf settings for the Frame import and export the isf file. So far so good. But now I want to change for instance the sizing of graphics on import or the mapping of paragraph formats. So I go to File/Project settings - but I can no longer access these settings. I can no longer access the settings for mapping, graphics etc. And I don't get it. Shouldn't I be able to edit the isf file here?
Regards
Bjørn
Short answer is no, that is not how you edit the settings. You need to read through my instructions again for the detail but the short version is this.
Step 1 is to go to Project Settings and select the CSS you want.
Step 2 is to start the import and apply all the settings you want.
Step 3 is before you import, you export all those settings to an ISF file.
Step 4 is next time you want to import you will see Custom in the ISF file. Browse to the ISF file you want and if no changes are required, you should be good to go but check. If changes are required, make them and export again overwriting the first file.
Now for the really unintuitive bit.
Next time you import, you will see Settings.ISF at the start of the process. Not unreasonably you will say to yourself "I updated those so I am good to go". WRONG. You will be working with the settings you saved in Step 3. If you want the updated settings, you have to browse to the updated file.
Don't shoot the messenger. I didn't create that workflow.

• Problem with InDesign CC exported epub for upload to IngramSpark

I am completely frustrated with IngramSpark. I have an epub file exported directly from InDesign and it repeatedly is being rejected by Ingram with the following message:
Adobe Format Rejected - Invalid Metadata or Content File
04/10/2014 12:05:48
Conversion Error: An error has occurred during the packaging process: E_PACK_ERROR http://localhost:8085/packaging/Package File%20already%20encrypted%20or%20unexcpected%20font%20mangling%20algorithm:%20http://www.idpf.org/2008/embedding Request XML was: <package xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/adept"> <location>ftp://LIGHTNINGSOURCE\autoftp:s3tpwd@localhost/GBTargets/9780985849405.enc</location> <src>http://ebook.lightningsource.com/TitleDownload/LSCFD.dll?hdlr=ADEPT&
Ingram claims the E_PACK_ERROR is the problem and that it originates on my end. We (the author and I) have tried numerous times via Verizon and AT&T servers to upload the file. I have vetted the file for anything extraneous, even replacing an ornamental font with just the one font family, Adobe Caslon Pro. I do not encrypt any files on my computer.
I do not know what else I can do to avoid the E_PACK_ERROR. Any suggestions would be of great assistance. This file passes muster with no errors when run through any of several different epub "validators", and the book performs flawlessly on Android phones and tablets, iPhones, and Windows and Mac PCs using several different ebook readers.

If the support staff at Ingram Spark is not helpful, maybe you'll just have to deal with the eBook sellers yourself. If the file passes IDPF validation, and if it view correctly on the eBooks you want it on, then the problem is at their end, not yours.

The issue: If I get this message, it means that I’ve already loaded my ePub into iTunes. iTunes inserts this code automatically into the file. Why? Dunno. Probably something it thinks it needs?
How to solve it:
One way to solve this is to create a fresh ePub version of the file and NOT load that copy into iTunes before running the check. Make a duplicate ePub file of the ebook after it passes the test, and LOAD THE COPY into iTunes, keeping the original file pristine and error-free!’

• Manual Create TOC Anchors in Exported ePub

Does anyone have a good tutorial on how to manually insert invisible TOC Anchors into the ePub xhtml files?
I have just finished laying out a novel in which I'm using images as chapter headings instead of actual text. Because of this, I can't just highlight the chapter name and assign it my TOC Style. I had created a hidden layer with a single text field, which fixed the problem as far as the print output goes, but the ePub export process discards this data and breaks all the TOC anchors. If I knew what lines I had to insert into the XHTML files for each chapter, I could then hack the TOC into working. (I can get at the files, just don't know what to add to each one.) My navigational TOC is working just fine, although it still needed some cleanup as the export process hates spaces apparently.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not sure of a link to a tutorial I could send you. You can just put anchors () after the p and span classes and before the img class with the chapter name and then link the text toc to the anchor you just made.

• Mixed fonts when exporting ePub file from InDesign

I am an ePubs newbie and have been watching some of the training videos on Lynda.com and tried creating my first ePub document today.
I am having problems with mixed fonts when exporting the file and viewing on iBooks on an iPhone.
I have a document with paragraphs of text to be in a regular weight and certain words within the paragraphs are to be picked out in bold. So I've used a Paragraph Style for the main text and then used a Character Style to pick out the bold words. Simple enough!!
On export I am not embedding any fonts as I have unchecked that option on the export dailaogue. I have used the same font family in InDesign, but I cannot work out why I am getting both Serif and Sans Serif fonts displaying when viewing it on the iPhone. The main body appears in the Sans Serif font, but I have the bold character styles, subheads and even the numbers in the numbered lists are all displaying in a Serif Font.
In iBooks I can change the display font (I have the choices: Georgia, Iowan, Palatino, Seravek and Times New Roman) and this affects the fonts which are displaying as Serif, but the main body font remains constant as a Sans Serif (looks like Helvetica).
I would ideally like all the fonts in the document to display as Sans Serif with certain words, plus the headings and subheadings to be in the bold weight version of the same font family.
I've tried this in CS5.5 and CS6 with the same results.
Can anyone offer any suggestions please.

Hi Steve,
Yes, you are correct. It is Anne-Marie Concepcion's videos that I've been watching.
I understand what you are saying about testing in other readers and I will be looking into that further. However our main task is to get some of our client's manuals and documents into a digital version that can be read on Apple devices, as these are what are being used by their sales force.
We have already produced some documents for use on the iPad and have used iBooks Author for that with some success. They have now asked about getting something onto iPhones, so we are now looking into the ePub format to do that. I realise that ePubs can also be used on iPads, but we would still be pushing the iBooks Author files for use on iPads as there is more interactive widgets that can be included. But the main ePub reader that will be used is going to be iBooks, so we are looking to get something to work in that App. Other formats may follow, but we are starting with getting something to work on iBooks first.
I have tried viewing the file in Adobe Digital Editions as you have suggested and have to say that this displays the file in a way that is certainly more appealing, as the fonts are at least consistent. However, I understand from Anne-Marie's videos that ADE is rather basic and is only intended as a rough proofing device. Which is why I transferred my ePub to my iPhone and iPad to view in iBooks.
As I have mentioned, I am a total ePub newbie. I come from a mainly print background and my knowledge of CSS and HTML is very basic. I have an understanding of the concepts, but I would always rely on developers to produce websites that I may have designed.
You seem to be implying that it may be in iBooks where the issues lie and from viewing the file in ADE this would certainly look that way. So I am simply trying to establish what I would need to do to make it work in iBooks in a more satisfactory way.
I have included some screen grabs below to illustrate my problems...
ePub viewing in ADE
If it looked like this on the iPhone I would be relatively happy!!!
ePub on iPhone
The main body copy is displaying in a sans serif font (Helvetica?) yet the heading, subheadings, numbers of the numbered lists, address, URL and legal line are all displaying as a serif font. All the style sheets are assigned to the same font family in InDesign (Helvetica). I have managed to get the bold text to appear in the sans serif font, by mapping the character style to the "strong" tag in the Export Tagging dialogue. All other paragraph styles are left as "Automatic".
I can change the font in iBooks and this affects the displaying of all styles apart from the main body, which stays consistently in the "Helvetica" font.
iPhone Fonts
iPad Fonts
On the iPad I'm also getting some elements coming in justified which looks awfull (see the main heading above). This image also shows how changing to an alternative font changes the heading and subheadings, but does not affect the main body!!!
Any suggestions???
Thanks

• Export ePUB from inDesign CS6 - polish fonts problem

I have to make ePUB with polish fonts.
I create a simple one page document in inDesign CS6 and export it to ePUB. All fonts are embedded.
When I check it in Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) there is problem with polish fonts (ż, ł). ADE doesn't read it correctly. Other readers do it in right way.
Is it a problem with inDesign or ADE?

The ADE provides a preview, and nothing more than that. Actual viewers have other, more, or less capabilities -- some don't support embedded fonts, others do but with limitations, etc.
ComrelPL wrote:
.. that's why bookstores need ePUB to be compatibile with this ADE.
E-Pub is still in its infancy. There is no general "e-pub" standard that *all* viewers are compatible with, other than the very lowest common denominator (which may very well mean "plain text").

I am trying to create an epub document that is 95% images (children's book). The images are placed inline and not dropped in like images would normally be. When I export the document and open it in iBooks I only get 1/2 of the pages exported. Not sure what is going on. get a formatting error when I export the epub, but I can figure out what is causing the error. Any ideas?

donny,
How exactly did you fix this problem? I am having the exact same issue (also trying to put one of my daughter's books into the iPad via Pages), and like you, I don't get all of the pages. I have Pages '09 4.1, and working on a MacBook Pro (2010 vintage). I have spent days trying to get this project sorted. I started with iBook, but the Apple ibook ePub like standard does not support the page turning function. I downloaded Pages last night and have this problem now. BTW, I tried to create a second book with a whole new set of images, and got the same problem (although on a different page number).
Any help would be appreciated, as my daughter is growing up fast.
