Export for non-expert print-shop?

My campus print shop has a color laser printer. The color quality is far from ideal, but for off-screen sorting-and-selecting work, the price is magnificent: 45 cents for 11x17 prints. The catch is that they don't know a lot about what they're doing; neither do I; so I'm coming here for advice.
I gave them a CD of JPG files I had exported from Aperture with the "JPEG- Original Size" preset (DPI at 72; sRGB profile, which is probably right). The images were a mix of portrait and landscape, and a mix of images that were originally JPG at 2816x2112 and images that were originally .CR2 at 3504x2332.
The prints came back with two kinds of errors. Some landscape shots (not all!) were rotated 90 degrees so the image was small and the top and bottom margins were enormous; this one doesn't worry me so much for sorting work. But many were severely cropped: the 11x17 sheet is filled, but filled with only about a third of the image. Typically, if not always, the image is landscape and the print is a portrait-oriented slice out of the center.
Both kinds of errors on both kinds of originals, JPG and CR2.
When we discovered the errors I stood there and watched the guy send some through. His software interface (some Windows "print wizard") allows for very, very little choice. I think we figured out how to solve the smaller problem, landscapes printed small as portraits with big top & bottom margins. And we solved the other, bigger problem of drastic cropping, on one test image, by opening it in Photoshop, setting the smaller-side size to 11 inches and the DPI to 300 and resampling and printing from there.
So I'm pretty sure I could solve it by going into Photoshop and using Image Size to specify the inch-dimensions and do any resampling required, saving the result as a JPG. But I also know this would take me a full day with a couple of hundred images.
Can anybody suggest how I might export directly from Aperture in some way that will be more nearly foolproof? (I don't mean they're fools; image manipulation isn't their job, just something their printer happens to do moderately well very cheaply.)

It may be the case that the printer software is
making best fit or best quality decisions prior to
printing. I would attempt to eliminate those
decisions.
Yes, my conclusion exactly. That's what I'm trying to figure out how to do -- without specifying everything (print size in inches and dpi, which would require me to open each image in Photoshop).
If the printer handles paper in the portrait format
the first thing I would try would be would match that
and orientate my images all as portrait prior to
exporting.
Well, it will do both -- just not always properly. Anyway, I can't turn an image that's portrait into landscape or vice versa without either getting quite a small image (which is one thing that sometimes happens now) or changing the image drastically (which would make the whole exercise pointless).
Also I would attempt to export the images by setting
pixel sizes that match as close as possible their
paper dimensions and printer resolution.
That makes sense -- except that the only way I can see to do that is through Photoshop or something like it. One way to put it is that Aperture will do pixels but not inches. Quite properly; but a problem in this case. And whether specifying DPI in Aperture's export would do anything at all for the printer is anybody's guess.

  • Exporting for non-widescreen TVs

I exported a video to MPEG2-DVD then burned it onto a DVD. It plays perfectly on my TV. The problem is, my in-laws have an old, non-widescreen TV and the video is cut off around the edges. Is there any way to export specifically for non-widescreen TVs or to play the DVD I already made on their TV without it getting cut off?

I have CS5 (and I'm not there at the moment) but memory tells me there are two MPEG2-DVD settings... Widescreen and regular... I always use widescreen because my video is HiDef widescreen... I will **guess** that if you select the regular export setting your video will be formatted for a 4:3 TV

  • Two-page spread for non-Apple printed book

This is probably going to sound complicated:
I'm in a small program, and we want to create a yearbook, which we decided to do ourselves since there's so few of us. The book will have pages of events and groups, of course, but also "profile pages" where photos focused on a single person are included.
Two of the people in the program are married to each other. Naturally, I want their pages to be side-by-side. More than that, though, I want to have a picture right in the middle of their two pages that I got from their wedding. In the picture, they have their arms linked, so the idea is that the gutter of the book will separate the photo with the man on the left (and his "profile page" will then go on the left), and the woman on the right (with her profile page).
I hope that makes sense so far.
The question is, how do I ensure I lose as little as possible in the gutter if I'm printing with a service other than Apple? Apple's just a bit too expensive for over a dozen books, so I'm looking at mostly Inkubook or Viovio. I've already set up a custom book in Aperture with the page sizes set to 8.7" x 11.2" (to account for 0.1" trim) and an inside margin of 0.25" (for the gutter).
Viovio has a suggestion on their website that images overlapping two pages should have a portion duplicated on either page, with the size of that duplication being equal to the size of the gutter (so the right image duplicates 0.25" of the photo on the left and the left duplicates 0.25" of the photo on the right).
Does that sound like it will work? And then, should I have the same photo on both pages with a duplicated area of 0.5" (the two gutters) or 0.7" (gutters plus trims)? To that end, how do you even measure distances in Aperture - I don't seem to be able to find a ruler of any kind, which makes putting equal spaces between photos and borders on pages very hard as well.
If that doesn't make sense, which I know it may not, let me know and I'll try to clear it up...

Two page spreads are tricky and will depend on how the binding is done by the third party printer. If you look closely at the PDF file created by Aperture for books, you'll notice that the individual pages of a two page spread do not absolutely bisect the image you've aligned across the two pages. Rather, the inside binding-side edges will give you a little extra bleed, so that in binding with the book pages spread open, you'll see one continuous image without white space.
I can't say for certain because I've not used a printer other than Apple, but I would imagine that there is variance from printer to printer w/respect to this center margin.
Of course, I could be entirely wrong.

  • ARE documents for non exciseable goods

    Dear Experts,
If the finished goods is not exciseable then whether the followings documents are required in export sale and deemed export sale.
1.In  export sale- ARE 1 document
2 In deemed Export - ARE 3 document
    In general
    1. Is bond mandatory if we ship the goods to foreign customer.
    2. Is license mandatory in deemed export( For non exciseable product)
    Please clarify my doubts.
    Regards
    JP

    Hai,
Any material manufactured or taken out of the manufacturing unit/ Plant - you are suppose to charge the excise duty according to law.
So all the scenarios you asked will be excisable. If the plant is not a manufacturing unit and Trading unit, then i think the material can be exported with out excise duty.

  • What's the best way to export for print?

I usually upload images to my local photoprinting shop. What's the best way to do that with Lightroom? Since lightroom does the final sharpening in the print module, how do I get that into the exported file since there is no export function in the print module? Also, how do I get the proper dpi and sizing info into the photo for the print shop? Thanks.

There is no good way to prepare images for printing from a file from a commercial printer by using Lightroom alone. You need to do an export of the image without any resizing or color space conversion, and then use some other program of your choice to 'finish' the file.
It's just plain missing functionality... Lightroom assumes that you will be printing photos yourself and it is missing a whole lot of stuff in order to support external printing, including:
    a) Resize to exact pixel dimensions. Many labs require an exact pixel count for a given print size, so for example for an 8x10 they need a 2400 x 3000 pixel image. Can't be done in Lightroom.
    b) Trim adjustment. If you are doing full bleed photos (no margin), you might need to provide about 0.05 inch of 'trim space' to compensate for image loss during printing. Can't be done in Lightroom.
    c) Exporting to a specific printer profile. Can't be done.
    d) Adding margins, text, etc. Many times my clients want a 1/4 inch margin in their photos to facilitate framing, or I put a dim watermark type text in the bottom corner. Can't be done.
My solution. Do most processing in Lightroom, do an export, and then do a second export via qImage on a PC. It does all of the above plus much more. It's just a matter of using the right tool for the job, and LIghtroom has no facilities at all for printing to a file.
I have been asking for "Print to File" ever since I was under NDA during the betas.

  • How do I get images from Aperture into print shop for mac?

    Friends,
I have Print Shop for Mac and Aperture. How do I get images from Aperture into Print Shop? I'musing managed images with previews. Is there any option besides exporting to the desktop and importing?
    Thanks!
    Steve

if you have previews turned on in Aperture and they're all genereated, you can simply drag-n-drop them into any application (just about). drag-n-drop is essentially the same as copy/paste as long as the application is setup to accept "drops" onto its windows.
otherwise, if you're running Leopard (10.5) as your version of Mac OS X, when you import (or whatever it is in PrintShop), you should get a file selection dialog. from here, scroll down the left-hand side bar set of icons. near the bottom is a group called "Media". click on the triangle to open the group, choose Photos, and from here you should see an Aperture icon. click this and you'll see your whole library (or at least the portion of it that you have previews generated for. select the photo you want and viola!

Printopia is another option but be aware that since these solutions effectively act as a print server and AirPrint receiver, they require a computer to be running on the same WiFi network.
Canon also has a couple of apps in the App Store that might facilitate this on non-AirPrint printers. Check out...

  • MIGO Print label WEE1 for non stock items from GR for PO

    Hi,
I added logic to print new label into printing program MZ07DETI which is printing labels for stock items. My label is for non stock items. The problem is that for non stock items printing process is not triggered. I created PO with Account Assign. Category F, P or K no material number and no storage location. For this type of PO no print possible during GR posting. Is any set up available in IMG to make it work. I appreciate any response.

    Hi,
Please check up if there is any default value at the plant level;in case of such default, the system will post to the GL Account defaulted, not with standing the "standard item category".Better checkup if any cost center /order has been assigned.
The GL item is defaulted thro'the item category. If both the goods and services have been defaulted to the same GL  Account, then not with standing the type [ie] whether goods or services, the system will post tot he same GL Acct.
    Hope this helps.

  • Labels created in appleworks need to be converted for printing shop

I have about 100 labels to send to a printer but I am told that a graphic artist must redo these as they cannot be converted as quality would be mediocre if saved from Appleworks to pdf or Jpeg.  Does anyone know how the quality of each label can be good without going through the whole proces and cost of having each label redone?
    Thanks for your help.

From the print dialog choose 'PDF' then 'Save as PDF' and see whether the resultant quality is good enough - its probably as good as you will ever get but a professional print shop may still turn their noses up at it.

  • Do I need to export multiple sizes for all standard print sizes? i.e.Say I crop the image in LR to 6'5" x 9' to fit within an 11" x 14" (overall) mat of a framed print.. Now let's say I want to reprint that same image in a 12" x 16" size ... to fit within

Do I need to export multiple sizes for all standard print sizes? i.e.Say I crop the image in LR to 6'5" x 9' to fit within an 11" x 14" (overall) mat of a framed print.. Now let's say I want to reprint that same image in a 12" x 16" size ... to fit within a mat of with overall size of 20" x 24"? Or will the 1st export be "locked" at 6.5" X 9" (proportionately)?

So, for the first one Export it cropped to 6.5 x 9 - and in the Export Dialog box there is a capability to rename the file for exported output - which would allow you to add something like the crop or intention to the base name of the file.  e.g. for _IMG0846.nef - setup the output filename to _IMG0846-65x9 for 11x14.jpg and output it at, say 300 or 360 dpi.  So, it has a unique name and purpose in your output folder.
For best results, now, re-crop the picture in LR - just open the crop [R] dialog again, reframe the image to the new ratio, 12x16 and Export again - with an adjustment to the filename. e.g. _IMG0846-12x16 for 20x24.jpg
So, now you have two clearly identified image files in your output area and you can provide those to whomever is printing for you, etc.  Discard them when you're done since you always have the original to return to to re-frame again as necessary.
This way you get output sharpening and resolution (in pixels) optimized for your output print size.  Maybe not super important for smallish prints-but more important for larger ones.   Output at 100 quality.

  • Setting print size to A3 or bigger using Lightroom 5 for printing at a print shop

Hi everyone. I have just bought and installed Lightroom 5 and need to set my print size to A3 and in the future even bigger. I do not have the facility at home and need to have them sized correctly for the print shop so they do not have to waste time resizing them. I am at a loss how to do this. I cant find any settings for this size print. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers Carmella. A3 is roughly 42 x 29.7 cm.

You can usually set custom paper sizes in the print driver but simplest is just to let Lightroom do it. Go to the print panel and in Print Job select JPEG file. Set your file resolution to (typically) 300 ppi, quality, anything above 90 is good (100 is overkill). Then turn on custom file dimensions and set the size to whatever you want. Make sure you set the output sharpening to the correct medium type and level and that you select the correct color profile for your printshop. This will give you very high quality prints.

  • Printing Shop Papers for Completed Notifications

    Hello,
This issue has been brought up on this forum before, but I have not managed to find an actual solution that was implemented by an organization.
We are basically trying to print Shop Papers for completed (NOCO) Notifications that have Orders assigned but that have been completed and TECOu2019d. The thread Need to REPRINT the Service Notification explains that it is not possible to print such shop papers. Is there some way to create a work around using user exits or a custom program to enable such shop papers to be printed? I've already checked with SAP and was told that no SAP note fulfills this requirement on ECC 6.0. I would much appreciate any insight on a solution you may have implemented.
    Thanks in advance,
    Tarun

PeteA is right you will need to have some custom code to by-pass the status checks that SAP has implemented.
Prometheus Group has a program called the Work Order Print Manager that can do this for work orders.  I am a developer for this solution.
The program gathers all document related to the work order (services for objects, DMS, sapscripts/smartforms, equipment doc, functional location docs, material docs, etc) and puts them into a nice GUI for printing.
Specifically for work order you cannot print them from standard SAP if the order is in created status because the menu is greyed out).  However we can put a button in a user exit to call the program.  The sapscripts appear along with the other documents and can be printed.
Additionally we can add watermarks and/or to the document to let the users know they are trying to print a work order in the incorrect status.  We/ I can demonstrate the work order solution to you and prototype a IW52 solution after a short discussion to help us understand your issue in particular.
    http://prometheusgroup.us/wopm.php
if you are interested in a demo email them to set up a demonstration with me.
