How to install Oracle software remotely?
Remote Software Installation Steps: (For Solaris only)
If you want to install Oracle Software remotely, you should perform the following steps. These steps are applicable only if your source and target machine are running Unix.
For example, you can install Oracle Software from your home from Washington, DC to a target source in California.
    1. Pick your source server or machine for remote installation.
    2. Check that your CD is in your source CD-ROM drive.
    3. On the target machine, find your target machine name with the output of the /usr/bin/hostname
    4. On the source machine, login as a user.
    5. On the source machine, enable client access: % /usr/openwin/bin/xhost + target-machine-name
    6. Become root user by typing: su (don’t use -)
    7. Check that Volume Manger is running. # ps –ef |grep vold (if you see an entry that contains /usr/sbin/vold, Volume Manager is running. Then skip to Step 10.
    8. If not then do the following: # mkdir –p /cdrom/your-cd-file-name
    9. # mount –F hsfs –r cdrom-device /cdrom/your-cd-file-name
    10. Add the following line to your /etc/dfs/dfstab file: # share –F nfs –o ro /cdrom/your-cd-file-name
    11. Verify whether your source machine is an NFS server: # ps –ef | grep nfsd
    12. If you see an entry that contains /use/lib/nfs/nfsd –a 16, then nfsd is running and skip to Step 16.
    13. If nfsd is running, then type: # /usr/sbin/shareall
    14. If nfsd is not running, then start nfsd by typing: # /etc/init.d/nfs.server start
    15. Verify whether your source machine is an NFS server again by typing: # ps –ef | grep nfsd
    16. Make sure your source machine is exporting your product directory by typing: # /usr/sbin/dfshares
    17. Now, log in to the target machine by type: # rlogin target-machine-name –l user (not root)
    18. Then log in as the root user by typing: # su
    19. Go to the source machine by typing: # cd /net/source-machine/cdrom/your-cd-file-name ,then Skip to 24.
    20. If you cannot change to that directory in Step 19 and you do not have an auto-mounter on your network, then create amount point by typing the following commands.
    21. # mkdir /remote_products
    22. # /usr/sbin/mount –F nfs –r source-machine:/cdrom/your-cd-file-name /remote_products
    23. # cd /remote_products
    24. Redirect the target machine display to source machine by typing: # DISPLAY=source-machine:0; export DISPLAY (if you use a Bourne or Korn shell).
    25. Start the Web Start Installer by typing: # ./installer (or whatever the installer name program is).

  • Installation error message for Oracle Database software for version 10g

Would someone be able to advise why I keep getting the following error message whilst installing Oracle trial Database software for version 10g Release 2 Standard Edition, Standard Edition One, and Enterprise Edition? Link listed below : -
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/oracle10g/index.html
    Error message "Cannot create directory"C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_7\cfgtoollogs\dbca\projemp"
Below is the 12 steps that I go through, please advise what I'm doing wrong : -
    1. (Operations) default is Create a database
    2. (Database templetes) default is general purpose
    3. (Database Identification) projemp.local for Global database name & projemp for SID
    4. (Management options) default is "Configure the database with Enterprise manager, also the options button has been clicked for "Use database control for database management"
    5. (Database Credentials) the options button has been clicked for "Use the same password for all accounts" so I've set up a new password, was that correct?
    6. (Storage options) the options button is clicked for "File System - use the file system for database storage.
    7. (Database file locations) the options button is clicked for "Use database file locations for template" Is this option correct? Other options are Use common location for all database files or use Oracle-managed files?
    8. (Recovery configuration) the options button is clicked for "Specify flash recovery area
    9. (Database content) nothing has been selected, the only option is "Sample schemas" should that be clicked?
    10. (Initialization parameters) the options button is clicked for "Typical- allocate memory as a % of the total physical memory
    11. (Database storage) no options available
    12. (Creation options) the options button has been selected for "Create Database"
    Click finish
I then get a screen stating General purpose, click OK then I get the following error message as stated at the start of this e-mail ""Cannot create directory"C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_7\cfgtoollogs\dbca\projemp".

    >
I've gone through my courses instructions as listed above (1-12) and end up with the following error message"C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_7\cfgtoollogs\dbca\projemp".What course?
    >
I've removed the software from my computer using control panel, programs & features then uninstall once but the other five times the software hasn't been listed. Whilst the Oracle was on my task bar I was able to install using Start > Programs > Oracle - HOME-NAME > Database Administration > Database Configuration Assistant. No you didn't. Database Configuration Assistant does not remove software. It can remove a database. As I mentioned before, there is a difference between the software and the objects that software manages. Deleting an Excel spreadsheet is not the same as deleting Microsoft Office. Deleting an Oracle database with Database configuration assistant is not the same as removing the Oracle software.
    >
Now that oracle is not on my task bar I've unzipped the link below, clicked on db, Disk1, setup, changed the Database password (is that correct?) install and I get the following error message "Check complete. The overall result of this check is: Failed<<<<<
Problem: The install has detected that the primary IP address of the system is DHCP-assigned.
    Recommendation: Oracle supports installations on systems with DHCP-assigned IP addresses;
However, before you can do this, you must configure the Microsoft LoopBack Adaptor to be the primary network adapter on the system. See the installation Guide for more details on installing the software on systems configured with DHCP."
So what did you do with the above error message? Did you follow up on what it said? Did you read the very fine Installation Guide that comes with the software? Did you read the section on networking considerations where it discussed DHCP assigned addresses and installing the loopback adapter?
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/oracle10g/index.html
Ok, that link takes us to the download page, which does not shed any light at all on your problems
I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium, 32 bit operating system, and my computer is saying I have 142 GB free space.
If you read the installation manual that came with the downloaded software, you'd have seen in the prerequisites that Home editions of Windows are NOT listed as supported platforms, whereas Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions specifically ARE listed as supportd.
    Hope this is some help.And
I'm not to clever on computers so would you be able to advise how I get to the command window to issue the SET command please?
Also I've no idea what OS user I am, I'm taking an on-line Oracle course and been advised to install "Oracle Database software for version 10g Release 2 Standard Edition, Standard Edition One, and Enterprise Edition"
How do I find out if I'm part of an Administrator, ORA_DBA group ?
Can you walk me through how to create the directory from command line please?Ok, given the above statements from you, I'm not even sure where to begin. I don't want to be cruel, but this self-admitted lack of even the most rudimentary knowledge by someone attempting to learn about Oracle is truly astounding. What course are you taking? Why are you taking this course?

The complete installation installation guide is included with the installation software. It is also part of the exhaustively complete documentation set for every oracle product found at tahiti.oracle.com. Go there, select your product and version. When you arrive at the page for your specific product version, somewhere on that page (location varies between versions) you will find a link to the installation guide.
Also please note that there are several versions of Vista, and the Oracle db is not certified for all of them, but only for specific versions.

  • Chosing processors for Oracle database 10g 64 bits

    Hi,
I have a customer that is planning to buy Oracle 10g 64 bits on a server Windows 2003.
My customer is interested in a processor that handles a lot of data in and out in a very effective way and the processor should be able to perform a great number of calculations in the database.
Are there some processors that are better than others for Oracle 10g 64 bits?
For example: Is Itanium better than Xenon? Or is Xenon better that AMD?
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    It's a very long article!
I'm not sure of its relevance, I'm afraid... not enough time to read it!
Kevin Closson's blog has a lot of good stuff about NUMA. Software can be optimised to run on NUMA processors. Oracle is. The parameter means you switch off those optimisations. It means Oracle works fine, but less well than it is theoretically capable of, because you are making it believe it's running on a non-NUMA processor.
From memory, the specific NUMA optimisation that caused the issue is that the buffer cache is divided up internally so that each processor can handle different bits of it, distributing cache management chores amongst all the available cores. Excellent in theory. Unfortunately, the bug meant that a query that runs on one processor core got its data cached in that processor's "bit" of the buffer cache... and if you re-ran the query and happened to end up on a different core, the new core behaved as though no data had been cached, and fetched it all again from hard disk. Performance WITH the NUMA "optimisation" was accordingly abysmal because you effectively had little or no buffer cache. The workaround is to disable the NUMA optimisation and pretend you've only got one core: Oracle then has a monolithic buffer cache -which introduces performance issues of its own, of course, but at least your data gets cached properly!
The bug is allegedly fixed in 10.2.0.3, but we spent over a 16 months getting it sorted, and by that time, we'd given up and gotten the Intel boxes, so I've no idea whether it was really fixed or not... and, of course, you might not be able to patch to that level anyway for internal politics or other reasons.

  • Web Server Options for APEX Installation on Oracle Database 10g

Hi. We are installation a APEX on a test server that is running Oracle Database 10g 10.2.0.4.0. As I understand it there are two Web Server Options:
    1) Oracle HTTP Server (Apache)
    2) Oracle Application Express Listener
Do both of these work for Oracle Database 10g 10.2.0.4.0? I thought I remember reading somewhere that only the Oracle Application Express Listener would only work with database version 11 or higher.

Do both of these work for Oracle Database 10g 10.2.0.4.0?Yes.
