Export from iPhoto to folder, then copy to CF card, not enough space error.

Here is an interesting problem, I'm trying to get 126 photos from iPhoto to a 64MB compact flash card.
I used the export in iPhoto and scaled to 800/1200 and saved them to folder on my desktop. When I get info on folder, it says size of files is 42.2MB. I drag the 126 photos from that folder to the Compact Flash card I have mounted using a SanDisk card reader. When it gets to the 85 photo, it says "unable to copy, insufficient disc space" and doesn't copy any of the pics to the CF card. If I copy the first 84 pics to the CF card, then they will copy to the card and then when I get info on the card it states 31 MB available and 30 MB used. When I try to copy any of the remaining photos, it states not enough space. What gives?
The very interesting thing is if I export the same photos and scale to 400/600, the get info on the folder states the size of the files is now 15.4MB. But when I try to copy to the CF card, still only 84 will go on the card.
Finally, I changed the name from "use album name" to "use title" and exported scaled 800/1200 and was able to get 114 of the 126 pics on the card, but it still says free space remaining. I can't figure this out!
(I need to transfer the photo's to the compact flash card because my wife got one of those digital picture fames for her Birthday, but the thing is not compatible with Mac! So have to transfer pics to card, then plug the card in the frame and it will show the pictures. Unable to hood up the frame to the Mac using USB. It does not recognize the frame.)
Anyone want to take a crack and solving this issue?
Thanks for your response in advance.

HI ksduckfan,
I am not sure if this is your problem, but you must drag the photos into a certain folder in the compact flash card. When you take photos and then mount the card (with the reader) did you notice what folder in the card had the photos in it. To find out, double click the mounted card on the desktop and look inside to find the folder with the photos. This is the folder you must copy the photos back into when you do the transfer.
There is a third party application that will make the process easier for you.

I do backup with iCloud.  I can't wait until the new iMac is available so that I can once again have my files in more than 1 location without needing to rely solely on the cloud.
I also rely on iTunes and my MacBook and Time Machine as well as backing up to iCloud. I know many users know have gone totally PC free, but I chose to use iCloud merely as my third backup.
I assume that the restore would result in my ability to open Pages and Numbers and fix the problem with deleting apps, but this would also mean that if my Numbers documents still exist solely within the app and are just not on iCloud for some reason that they would be gone forever.  Is that right?
In a word, yes. In a little more detail.... When you restore from an iCloud backup, you must erase the device and start all over again. There is no other way to access the backup in iCloud without erasing the device. Consequently, you are starting all over again. Therefore, it would also be my assumption that Pages and Numbers will work again and that the deleting apps issues would be fixed as well.
If the documents are not in the backup, and you do not have a backup elsewhere, the documents could be gone forever.

  • Why does simply copying a DVD report "not enough space"?

This is a mystery - it should be so simple but it's not... anyone know what's wrong...?
I have a DVD which I burned myself - a simple data DVD. I wanted to make a copy of it so, in Disk Utiity, I did the following:
    - Insert the source DVD in the drive
    - Click "New Image", thus creating a .dmg file on the desktop
    - Select this new .dmg image in the panel on the left
    - Select "burn" and insert blank DVD when prompted.
Result: "Destination disk has insufficient space".
Exactly the same DVD media, exactly the same DVD drive. I have tried it multiple times and as an experiment I also tried it with a different source disk - a CD in that case, copying to blank CD media. Same problem. What can possibly be wrong?
    Thanks!

Well for example the .dmg file for the CD is 549,812,289 bytes (549.8 MB on disk)

  • Connecting to Samba server "cannot be copied ...there is not enough space"

I have a user running OS X 10.4.11 who suddenly can no longer connect to our departmental Samba server. To be more specific, he connects just fine - but when he connects, it tells him "zero KB available" and if he tries to copy a file (a very small file) to the server, it gives him the error message:
+the item cannot be copied because there is not enough space+
I know for a fact that the problem is NOT a problem with the server nor userid because:
    * the server has 7.5 TB of space available
    * I can connect to the server from another Mac (running OS X 10.5) and can write/copy all the files my little heart desires.
    Suggestions?

    Couple of ideas...
In Finder, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes".
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
    Trash this file & reboot...

  • Getting "not enough space on iphone" error when trying to restore iPhone from latest backup in iTunes.

Recently updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 6.1.3 and lost all of my contacts after doing so.  Tried to restore phone to latest backup performed in iTunes but I get an error message that tells me there's not enough space on my iPhone to perform the restoration.  The ultimate problem I'm trying to solve is the loss of my contacts so if there's another way to solve that please let me know. If restoring my phone is a proper solution please help me do so.
    1.  How do I get my contacts back?
    2.  How do I restore my iPhone from latest backup when getting "not enough space" error?
    Please help!

Contacts are not part of the backup. They are seperate and either you need to sync them with an email program such as outlook or use icloud mail, contacts, and calendars on the phone. Unless you did that then the contacts are gone.

  • Unable to export from iPhoto

I have tried to export individual photos and an album as a file(s) to my desktop and to smugmug via the iPhoto plugin without success. I have also put a new folder in Pictures and have tried to export the photos to it without success.
When exporting to desktop, the message comes up "Exporting...Unable to create /users/name/desktop."
When using the smugmug plugin, iPhoto "unexpectedly" shuts down!
I have tried to drag and drop photos from iPhoto without success of course.
I will appreciate your help and suggestions. This is the first time that I've had problems exporting from iPhoto.
    Vernon

Well the reason you can’t export is because iPhoto can’t find the pictures.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Export from iPhoto while keeping original photo information?? NEED HELP!!!

I'm trying to set up a pc for my grandmother so I can take over her old computer (macbook air). However she has 11000 photos on iPhoto and I need to move then all onto a storage device (about 30GB) but when I export them the computer doesn't copy all the information such as the date the photo was taken etc. Talking to a guy in the apple store he said i couldn't do it, but he was being pretty unhelpful so I was wondering if anyone here could give me an answer. How do you export from iPhoto while keeping all the information?

    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
    As to dates specifically:
There are two kinds of metadata involved when you consider jpeg or other image file.
One is the file data. This is what the Finder shows. This tells you nothing about the contents of the file, just the File itself.
The problem with File metadata is that it can easily change as the file is moved from place to place or exported, e-mailed, uploaded etc.
Photographs have also got both Exif and IPTC metadata. The date and time that your camera snapped the Photograph is recorded in the Exif metadata. Regardless if what the file date says, this is the actual time recorded by the camera.
Photo applications like iPhoto, Aperture, Lightroom, Picasa, Photoshop etc get their date and time from the Exif metadata.
When you export from iPhoto to the Finder new file is created containing your Photo (and its Exif). The File date is - quite accurately - reported as the date of Export.
However, the Photo Date doesn't change.
The problem is that the Finder doesn't work with Exif.
So, your photo has the correct date, and so does the file, but they are different things. To sort on the Photo date you'll need to use a photo app.

  • Export from iPhoto to Cpmpact Flash Card

I am so frustrated. We got one of those new [icture frames that you can put a flash card in. When I select the photoes from iphoto and export them to the card I get an error early into the transfer
Unable to create/Volumes/ after a few pics, never the same pic. I think all my pics are good jpgs, What is wrong, I have tried different memorry cards, all the same.

This could be a file permissions issue: Download BatchMod from
    http://macchampion.com/arbysoft/
And apply it to the iPhoto Library Folder using the settings found here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/toad.hall/.Pictures/Forum/BatChmod.png
(Credit to Old Toad for this one).
Another possibility is that iPhoto is having trouble with the Format of the card, so try exporting to the desktop and then dragging to the card.

  • Exporting from iPhoto - 8 x 10 prints - image inconsistencies

My other half and I are relatively new to digital photography - but we're in something of a bind.
We looking for several dozen 8 x 10 prints (for an exhibition) from images stored in our iPhoto library. We'll be supplying them on disc to a photography bureau for printing. We did some sample 8 x 10s on our own printer, and were dismayed by how the image resolution varies from image to image; some look more pixellated than others. I'm wondering whether this is because of something we've done in iPhoto, since (as I understand it) JPEG resolution diminishes if photos are edited in any way. To my knowledge, we haven't edited the images; they've just sat in the library - although we've copied and exported many of them.
It's making me wonder whether iPhoto is the most suitable application for this kind of work, since it holds everything in the space-friendly JPEG format rather than their original chunky size.
I'd be really grateful for answers to any or all of the following:
    1. What activities in iPhoto might have caused the quality of our original JPEGs to have deteriorated, and is there any way of checking this? And can the photos in question be "retouched" in any way? I have access to Photoshop 7, if that's of any help.
    2. What format would be the best for exporting the images for the photography bureau (TIFF, presumably?) and are there any tricks or traps to be aware of? I've exported from iPhoto dozens of times, but never in such quantity.
    3. In the future, if we want to make larger prints from our digital images, should we be looking to download in RAW format rather than JPEG (the only two formats our camera, a Canon EOS10D, seems to support) - and use an application other than iPhoto? Or would upgrading to iPhoto 6 help us in any way.
    Many thanks.

    Hi, David.
    1. What activities in iPhoto might have caused the quality of our original JPEGs to have deteriorated, and is there any way of checking this? And can the photos in question be "retouched" in any way? I have access to Photoshop 7, if that's of any help.
Cropping, perhaps more than anything else, because it reduces the actual number of pixels in the image. Any sort of editing or manipulation followed by saving, when the file is in JPEG format. Every time you save any new change to a JPEG image, the image is re-compressed and further degraded.
If you have your camera save your images as JPEGs, re-save them as uncompressed TIFFS or PSDs as soon as you get them onto your Mac. Do all your editing and manipulating in TIFF, PSD, or some other uncompressed format. You will still have the original JPEG compression artifacts in them, but at least you won't be adding a new layer of artifacts and blurring with every change you save. For best results, shoot all your important images in RAW format instead of JPEG, so they are never compressed at all.
    2. What format would be the best for exporting the images for the photography bureau...?
Ask the bureau what format they recommend or prefer. If they can handle .psd files, that format would maximize your own control.
If you have Photoshop 7, there may be no good reason for you to use iPhoto at all.

  • Exporting from iPhoto 09 to Windows 7

I wish to transfer some photos from my MacBook Pro to my daughter. She uses a Windows 7 PC and she shares our network at home.
I have exported a few photos which have captions and Keywords.
When she views the photos using Windows Live Photo Gallery she can see the photos and the captions but not the keywords.
When exporting from iPhoto I have used File>Export, have chosen JPEG, Maximum Size and have ticked the box to include Title and Keywords.
    My questionsa are:
    1) Why are the Keywords not showing in Windows Live Gallery? They are not shown in 'People Tag' or Descriptive Tag' (I have exported them to a folder on my Mac and can see the Keywords when I check Properties.) And is there anything I can do to make them viewable in Windows Live Gallery?
    2) When I view Properties on my daughter's PC it shows under 'Origin' Quick Time 7.7.1 along with the date and time the photos were taken. Why would it show 'Quick Time'?
    Many thanks,
    Peter

The reason is that whatever software your daughter is using is not supporting Exif and IPTC standards. Get your daughter to use an app that does.
The QuickTime part is a never-no-mind. It just means that there were exported on a Mac. QuickTime is multi-media substructure on the Mac.

  • Export from iPhoto with limited ppi.

I need to submit a photo that is 1000 ppi in its longest dimension. When exporting from iPhoto, you can select small, medium, large and original. Or go the custom route, in which case the dimension is listed as "px." How do I convert to ppi? Thank  you.

you can not - PPI is Pixels per inch - digital photos have no inches so you can not have PPI
in the export dialogue you can select the number of pixels for the largest dimension - see the user tip on exporting for export options

  • Exporting from iPhoto 11 to External Hard Drive

I am trying to export some of my pictures in iPhoto to me external hard drive.  I am able to do it, but when I open the pictures that have been exported, they have lost their info, for example the date the picture was taken.  What appears in the info is the date that I exported them.  Is there a way to export but retain the date?

You need to check both the Include boxes.
No, you do need an application that's aware of Exif - and that includes simple photo viewers. It does not include the Finder.
    In more detail:
There are two kinds of metadata involved when you consider  jpeg or other image file.
One is the file data. This is what the Finder shows. This tells you nothing about the contents of the file, just the File itself.

  • How to Export from iPhoto in time-taken order.

In the archived discussion "http://discussions.apple.com/message/11510994#11510994" entitled "Exporting from iPhoto Library to hard disk for archiving", LarryHN said to "...use the export option to name files sequentially...".  If you're wondering what option that is, I believe it is File -> Export... -> File Export -> Use album name.  That causes your iPhoto Library to be output in the order you see them within iPhoto because iPhoto creates the files with sequentially numbered file names prefixed by the album name, such as "Library - 01.jpg", etc.  Thanks Larry

It's not marked as a question, it was my mistake... I responded to the How to... as a question and not as an instruction...

I just downloaded Yosemite and all my iPhotos have disappeared! I tried importing them from the photo library but it said there wasn't enough space on my hard drive which is rubbish, because they were there before. How do I get them back to iPhoto?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.
