Export general error poser

Now here's a poser - well for me anyway.
I've been trying to export a 96 min movie via Quicktime to iDVD but kept getting a "general error" message after about 82%. By trial and error I managed to identify a 5 min clip that was causing the problem but I have no idea why. Any suggestions ??
Ewart

Thanks VJK. Actually the faulty clip and the one following both had the same subject material and the whole project is 16 bit.
I discovered that the fault was right at the end of the clip so it was simply a matter of snipping off a couple of seconds to rectify the problem. But I would still like to know what it actually was that stopped the 90 min vid exporting via QT.
Cheers

  • FCE 4 doesn' export - General Error

Hi, I've got a problem with FCE 4; I can't get it to export.
I've been working on a project for over three months and now that it's over, I can't export it. I've also moved the whole project from my Macbook, in which I created it, to my iMac 2.4, but nothing, and the end of the "Export in Quick Time Format" it always reads "General Error" and, of course, the video has not been created.
What does that "General Error" mean? Waht can I do in order to solve this issue?
    Thanks in advance,
    Fabrizio

I'm glad you solved your problem.
Be careful anyway about importing .psd with transparency into PAL projects. In the past (FCE 3.x) I lost some projects because of that. Now I don't dare doing it again, also because I had inconsistent behaviours with a few tests in FCE4. To be safe I import .tif or .png instead.
    About the keyboard.
Leopard has a bug that prevents FCE (and FCP) shortcuts to work correctly with non-US keyboards. 10.5.3 update did not fix it yet.
    There is a workaround.
    - Open the International panel of System Preferences
    - click the Language tab
    - drag "English" to the top of the list (on top of Italian)
    - drag back Italian to the top of the list
    - close System Preferences
    - (close if necessary and) open FCE or FCP: shortcuts should be fixed.
This seems to work till the next system startup; then you have to repeat this procedure...

  • Time Line Wont Export, general error

I have a time line in FCP that is set for DV-NTSC that is about 5 hrs long with markers. I am exporting it Dv-NTSC, but it gives me a general error instead of finishing. I have no idea how long it takes to get to that point because I leave it over night. I set the computer to not go to sleep or power down during the process.

Yeah, this problem is a bear to deal with.
Last few times it happened to me, I managed to trace it to a single bad frame in one of my clips.
    Is your timeline rendered?
If not, you should start there before trying to export.
Narrow it down by rendering your timeline in chunks.
If it's already rendered, and you get the error on export, try exporting chunks that you can stitch together later.
Once you find the offending clip, opening it in Quicktime, re-exporting it and bringing in the new file usually fixes the problem.
It's tedious and has the chance of eating up a lot of your day, but it's all I got.

  • Final Cut 7 Exporting - GENERAL ERROR Message

Been working on this for days now and it's driving me nuts. I'm trying to export a 22-minute long sequence. These are my export settings:
    FCP 7
File -> Export -> Quicktime Conversion
    Format: MPEG-4
    Options:
    File Format: MP4
    Video:
    Video Format: H264
Data Rate: 25,000 (approximately - it might be a little more or less to get it to 2GB)
    Image Size: 1280X720
    Frame Rate: 29.97
    Key Frame: Every
    Frames: 3
    Video Options:
    Restrict Profiles to: Main
Encoding Mode: Faster (unless you want to spend a couple of days rendering)
    Audio:
    Format: AAC-LC
    Data Rate: 320
    Channels: Stereo
    Output Rate: 48.000 kHz
    Encoding Quality: Best
I keep getting a General Error message. I've tried everything. Settings are kosher, I've rendered every single clip, full timeline renders perfectly well, I export just small segments and that works, don't know what to do.
    Suggestions?

Yeah, it has to be a settings issue. Just won't let me export something that large. I threw in the quicktime file of the last portion into the timeline with the rest. General error once again at 80%. So I know it's not something in the actual sequence.
If it exports as a quicktime, and then it exports in three broken up segments without a hitch, there must be something that's not allowing me to export a file that large.
    Any clues?

  • "General Error" when exporting unrendered clip?

I have .mov clips in my project that already have an alpha channel in them (format is Animation millions of colors +).
They're on the timeline in a sequence, with a single transition between them.
I want to export back to Animation Millions of Colors + in order to keep the alpha channel (this is for Flash video conversion).
The composite mode for the clips are set to normal, with straight alpha. I can see that the alpha is intact on the clips in the timline by temporarily placing an image on a layer under them.
I understand that you have to export without rendering in order to preserve the alpha channel.
However, when I try to export to ANY codec without rendering, I get a dialog that says only "General Error." Rendering will allow export, but of course the alpha channel is gone now.
I'm running System 10.4.10 with the QuickTime 7.3 upgrade installed, FCE 3.5.1. Did QT 7.3 break something?
    Thanks in advance,
    Steve

    Tom,
Thanks for your reply. The problem isn't that I didn't use the right codec (I did, as I said in my original post). The problem is that I am not able to export an undrendered clip using any codec. All I get is the "General Error" message.
Thus no transparency in the exported file.
Also to clarify, I am not keying the source files to create transparency in FCE. The source files already have an alpha channel in them.
I have downgraded to QuickTime 7.2, so 7.3 was not the culprit. I have also run the usual system cleanup utilities like AppleJack, etc.
    Thanks,
    Steve

  • General Error while exporting QT

The last couple of projects I've done have been online conforms to HD 10bit uncompressed.
After finishing all of my tweeks, I wish to output a master Quicktime. As usual I place my in and out markers at the beginning and end of my timeline, and select Export to QuickTime Movie. I select current settings and make self contained. I target my XRAID with better than 1.5 TB available.
I've had both of these project fail well into the output process. All FCP says is "General Error". After a little research I discover that I'm not the only one with this problem. I tried trashing all of my FCP prefs and trashing my render files and re-building them.
If I Export to Compressor, the entire timeline will output without failing.
So, why is this happening? and... If I have a 1920x1080 23.98p 422 10bit uncompressed timeline and I export thru Compressor set to transcode to the very same settings. Is my video compromised in any way?
My latest piece is about 60 minutes, it appears to fail while halfway done. The previous one was 20 minutes and failed earlier.
    Intel 8 core 3.0Ghz, 6 Gig of RAM, OSX 10.5.5, QT 7.5.5, FCP 6.0.5, Kona3 (v6 software)

I eventually found a couple of clips 3/4s into my timeline that were fixes from Color. They were rendered out in an AJA YUV codec instead of the normal Uncompressed 10bit 422 codec. Although they looked fine, they were the fly in the ointment. When I ran the two offending clips out thru Compressor and replaced them in the timeline, the entire project exported in one go.
I wish FCP would do a better job of informing what and where the problem is, instead of the "General Error" message.

  • General Error (34) Message Immediately After Exporting

    Hello,
I'm currently running Final Cut Pro on an external hard drive, and immediately AFTER I export a video, I receive a General Error (34) message but, funnily enough, the exported video seems to be turning out okay.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be? I would hate to loose all the data, and I'm concerned that may be the case...
    Message was edited by: lmg-94

My memory is shot!!! I just remember that I had this problem about 6-months ago. At that time I copied the entire project...then opened a completely new project and pasted it in. I just did the same thing and it nows exports as it should.
However, there's still something wrong because I shouldn't have to do this. Tom, I believe you told me something about trashing my preferences. Does that sound like my problem? How to I find out how to do that? Thanks.

  • While exporting i get "general error"

I was doing a project that was had about 12 different sections so I just edited them all in different sequences. Well when I was done I just took all of the sequences from the browser and dropped them on the time line and rendered it. I then exported it as QuickTime conversion as an uncompressed file. It would get to about 40% and it would just stop and a window would come up and all it would say is general error. What is wrong, thankyou Joe.

It could be many things. Whatever it is its about 40% of the way in your timeline.
It could be a corrupt clip or graphic. More likely to be a graphic so if there any graphics around there make sure they are RGB and not CMYK.
It could be a corrupt render. Select a chunk in the vicinity and Control Click>Choose Remove Attributes> Make sure NOTHING is selected and choose OK. The render it again.
FWIW I had this issue a LOT with a project I worked on recently. I think I had a cranky drive. It kept corrupting my audio render files. So every time it would happen I would just do the remove attributes trick with the audio and that would fix it most of the time.
Post back and let us know if any of that helped or not.

  • General error in FCP re: rendering and export  after Quicktime 7.5.5 update

    Hi
My FCP 6.0.4 rendering and export to Compressor no longer works after an update to Quicktime 7.5.5.
Rendering fails after a few seconds "General Error!" pops up. Exporting to Compressor, after setting it compressing, Compressor after a few seconds fails. (audio is processed) My current work around is exporting a sequence using Quicktime conversion (time consuming) and then opening in Compressor.
I've done the usual, deleting prefs, new sequences and projects, even saving movs in different codecs.
    (been using H.264)
My sequences are all custom sizes but tests using presets also fail.
    Any ideas anyone?
And I was so happy the Quicktime upgrade could play sequence movs recorded months earlier that until now I couldn't play properly due to previous Quicktime upgrades!
Apple gives with one hand and takes with the other....

    Hi There,
Thanks for your reply on this.
Well basically since I'm using content already in the H.254 codec (eg: a trailer off the internet, or the downsizing of HD footage) i'm just exporting to a codec that didn't have to be rendered and gave quality results. I used motion jpeg B as an export codec because it was quick (although HD space hungry) with no drop in quality. The resulting exports could be imported into a custom sequence (720 x 405) as square pixel aspect ratio files. Overlapping the canvas with other windows (eg: viewer) meant I could play a clip (with dropped frames) but not have to render it. I selected the H.264 codec as the sequence codec because I've found other codecs introduce darkening or lightening or blurring or other undesirable artefacts when exported to Compressor. H.264 used in the sequence settings exported through Compressor would give resulting m2v's as sharp and contrast accurate as the source file.
That was until the recent 7.5.5 Quicktime update where attempts to do the same things I did before result in "General Error!" coming up after a few seconds of play or rendering.
Traditional DV codecs are "blurry" in my opinion, especially when coping with web content or conversion of HD downloads.
If you can suggest an editing codec that works best with FCP that is quick, doesn't introduce blurring or general degrading of the image I'd be happy to try it out. I typically downsize HD content from the web for DVD playback, so it's usually in a H.264 codec already. So i would need a codec for export from Quicktime that would work best with a codec in FCP. That doesn't alter picture quality when compressed to m2v in Compressor.
    Thanks!

  • General Error when Doing Export

I'm getting a "General Error" when exporting a sequence, both as a reference QuickTime and as a self-contained QuickTime file. The process goes along until a certain percentage (73%), and then it bails, and gives this not-very-specific "General Error" message.
I've gone into the timeline and figured what I think is 73% of the timeline, and taken a look at the media at that point, which happens to be a Motion project brought into FCP as a .mov. I've pulled out the Motion project files, re-exported it out of Motion, and put the project back in.
I've also repaired permissions, run Disk Warrior, gone from 10.4.9 > 10.4.10, and up'd my QuickTime version to 7.2.0 (Pro).
    I'm using FCP 5.1.4, with Motion 2.1.2
I'm not sure what else to try, or what else to consider.

    Hi,
I am also having the same "General Error" message when i am trying to export a sequence that have the setting of HDV720p30 to a QT movie using export to Quicktime Movie>using the Current Settings on the Export tab.
This project is a concert i shot with 4 cameras. I have 4 sequences for the different camera angles and since there are three tapes, i had to line them together on each of their sequence and export them to be a self contained QT movie. I am using the export to Quicktime after right clicking on the sequence.
After that i was going to import them onto FCP Project and then multiclip edit the concert. I just love Multiclip editing.
I am able to export 1 of the 4 angles have and ran into this General Errorr Message.
I have tried making a new sequence, i have also tried using compressor but did not have the patience of waiting 10 hours to export the movie and also i didn't want to see the general error message at the end of the export so i came to ask any FCP Guru out there that can guide me. thanks.

  • Export To Quicktime Movie (Reference or Self Contained) - GENERAL ERROR

    Hi -
I recently had to re-install FCS2 due to problems with OSX.
Now, for some reason, when I want to export from FCP to get a QT reference movie, I get a general error message. All other options from FCP export seem to work, but NOT export to Quicktime Movie.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

  • FCP HD 4 and "General Error" while exporting

Hello, first of all: happy Christmas to all.
    I have a problem with final cut pro (OSX 10.3.9 - dual G5 2 GHz PCI-X):
I worked on a sequence (a video DV imported from the camcorder via firewire); I exported it i the "Quick Time compression" format. And it worked.
Than I worked again with the sequence.
Now I'm trying to finally export it (always Quick Time Compression, non compressed 10 bit), but it give me this error:
    "General error".
    Does anyone know what's happened?
    Thank you very much.

Sorry not to be able to give you a simple answer, just too many possibilities. The topic "general error" comes up at least weekly around here so please search the forum for that term. This will give you several pages of reading but only you can see if there are any connections between what you're experiencing and what others have conquered.
Some other folks will chime in as traffic picks up after the holidays.

  • General Error; failed to render the timeline and failed to export HD mpg2

I have searched for the posts if there is same issue I'm having on the forum, and it seems it's similar yet not really...
So I decided to post one.
I have 2100 sequential frames in jpgs. (each jpg size is 1280x720)
I open "image sequence" in QT 7.04 with 29.97 fps, then save it as MOV in external HD with firewire.
Then I import it into FCP 5.04 on Timeline.
    Timeline setting is
    Frame Size : 1280x720 HDTV 720P (16:9)
Pixel Aspect Ratio : Square uncheck Anamorphic 16:9
    Filed Dominance : None
    Editing Timebase : 29.97
Quick time Vieo Setting : Compressor -DVCPRO HD 720P60 Quality 100%
After I place the mov file on the timeline, the Red Bar shows up.
I tried to render the timeline, it will only try to render to 3% and stop, and "general error" pops up.
I tried to use Compressor 2.01 with HD mpg2 preset to export out as HD mpg2 format, and it will fail to export.
After I read several posts on here, I was wondering I might have corrupted mov...
I re-create MOV file from QT and import in FCP5 and do the same... but I still get the same error...
I tried to re-start computer and tried, no luck..
Then I was wondering maybe some of the jpgs is corrupted...
I'm not sure how to check which jpg file is corrputed since there is 2100 frames in directory.
It is able to show all jpgs as thumbnail images..
    So my questions here.. are...
If I do anything wrong during the step?
If not... what's wrong? why i can't render the timeline, and why i can't export to HD?
Or if there is a "way" to figure out what file is corrupted..?
This is not first time I have the same problem, I even tried to test out with 10,000 jpgs frames and create mov ... and import in FCP5..etc...
I had no problem with render and export... so I don't think it's the "HD length" issue...
If anyone have the same issue or know what's wrong... please help!!!
    Thank you,

I downloaded iview Media pro free trial version to catalog the image to see if there is any corrupted jpgs.
Unfortunately, it didn't find any corrupted jpgs.
I also tried to change the sequence setting, under "QuickTime Video Setting" from "DVCPRO HD 720p60" to "HDV 720p30" (since I found out the frame size for DVCPRO HD 720p60 is 960x720 with 59.99 fps).
The result I get after I placed mov on timeline, it used to give red bar, it gave me orange bar... which made me be able to render the timeline without problem.
However, Compressor still is not able to export HD mpg2.
Then I changed QuickTime Video Setting from HDV 720p30 to "photo-jpg", the bar is now grey, but still not able to export to HD mpg2.
    now I don't really don't know what's going on.
anyone can suggest me what else I can try and see...??

  • General error when trying to export as a QT movie

Everytime I try to export as a .mov from the timeline (FCP 4.1) I get a general error code. I can export as an .avi file, open in QT Pro and then to a .mov file.
I am having the same issue on two different machines, one is a Quicksilver and the other is a Gigabit Ethernet, same OS and version of Final Cut Pro.
Is there any preference I forgot to change, or got changed without my knowledge.
I need a little coaching here I am still new to the complexities of the programs.

I am exporting to my media drive which is the fourth partition of the master HD and is formated OS Extended (journaled).
By master HD do you mean the system drive? The one with your OS and all applications? And I assume that when you say media drive that you also capture to that partition?
Might not be the cause of your problem but that's about the worst setup you can have for capturing and playing media with FCP. The system drive has to run the OS, run the programs, capture and playback footage! That's a lot of work. And partitioning does not help in that respect... still just one physical drive, and some would say that partitioning slows thing down even more since the heads have to jump from partition to partition to perform various tasks.
If I've misread your post I apologize for going on, but if not, you should really consider adding another drive for capture.

  • "General error" while trying to export my movie.

Hi all, I saw a few threads with this topic but no one seems to have a solution so I thought I would post a new one hoping for a miracle
I have a small movie that I made that I want to export with "using quicktime conversion" option. As soon as I rename the title and choose a destination, I get the "General Error" message that pops up with no number or error code attached to it. I tried saving the file to different hard drives with a lot of space to spare and still won't work. I also did the "render all" option before trying to export my movie. BTW, I'm only at around 11 minutes of movie and my whole project should be about 2 hours...
Also, I chose the correct AVCHD 1920 X 1080 codec since my original data comes from my Canon HF200.
When i was only a few minutes into my project, I did a test film and I managed to export it but had no sound when playing the test movie on my WDTV (that's another problem though) but now it won't even export at all... Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Rob

    A couple things to try:
    1. Decrease the amount of RAM allowed to the application and see if it was a problem with the OS not having enough to function.
    2. Basic troubleshooting procedure, trashing preferences and repairing permissions:
