Export greyscale
Hi
I'm having problems when I take greyscale images to the printers as my files are still in sRGB. I am converting to greyscale in develop, and the exported jpgs are greyscale but still in sRGB. How do I export in greyscale please? There is no option for this in the drop-down for export colour space.
I am just using Lightroom, but I do have the LR2Mogrify plug-in.
sRGB it just uses the three channels to hold the information. LR doesn't export to greyscale. If you have a particular printer profile that uses a greyscale space then use the print module and attach the profile there..

Even though I have have converted a color image to greyscale with great ease and control in Lightroom (that's why I chose LR over Aperture) I cant find a way to EXPORT the image as a greyscale image!
It is really annoying to have to run another programme to be able to make it a greyscale imagefile.
It should be a "Greyscale" choice in the exports menu for color space. Am I missing something or why is this not possible with Lightroom???
Please tell me how I can do it - and if it is not possible - get it into Lightroom 2, please!!!
FinnKLike printing services and such. Basically every commercial lab will have an issue with greyscale jpegs as the machines cannot read them. Photoshop of course reads them fine and if they go to professionals that do their own CMYK separations or other color management, there is no issue. On the other hand, if you would put them on the web, many web browsers (except safari and firefox 3 with color management turned on) usually get them wrong. I think it would be good to have the option to write greyscale files, but the default should be RGB jpegs even for black and white conversions. In jpeg, you should not get any size advantage, but you will certainly get it in tiff. If you go tiff, then all this about web and labs does not apply anyway.

Why can't Lightroom export greyscale images as greyscale?
When I need a greyscale imagefile I have to use another application to do this. I find this very unpractical - and a bit odd for a professional application like Lightroom not to have this option.
This should be a simple thing to put into Lightroom2. (?)
Will you do it? - Please!I entered this the "wishform"/ feature request form:
*******Enhancement / FMR*********
Brief title for your desired feature:
Export image as greyscale file.
How would you like the feature to work?
There should be a choice for "Greyscale" in the Export/File Settings/Color Space Selection field. (Same selection field where you select "sRGB", "AdobeRGB" or "ProFoto RGB" .
Why is this feature important to you?
I need the option to export my black&white images as greyscale files. This is practical when I need to work with the image as .tiff or .psd file in photoshop. The filesize gets smaller and is faster to work with. Last I need the option when I submit my finished images to magazines.
Is this OK, do you think? -
Help asap - LR tiff export 3X larger than Photoshop tiff export
I need to send 15 tiff files through an FTP site for an upcoming exhibit, and having exported files to the required specs find that they are huge, compared to exports straight from Photoshot set to exactly the same parameters - almost 3X larger to be exact. These are 16-bit grayscale scans of 4X5 negs.
I could export each one directly from Photoshop of course, but I like the look of the files, which I have altered slightly using the develop settings in Lightroom 2.
What to do? There are tight deadlines, of course. I should get these out tomorrow if possible.Jan,
Lightroom can only export greyscale images as RGB (3 channels), hence the file being 3 times larger than Photoshop. However, you can use the Edit in Photoshop command (Ctrl/Cmd+E) to send the Lr edited greyscale file to Photoshop, convert it back to greyscale (single channel) then save it from there. -
How to export a CMYK document to a black/white or greyscale pdf for print?
Hello, I have some knowledge in graphics design, but very little about color management.
Currently I need to convert an instruction manual I made to black and white output only. We'd prefer to keep the indesign (.indd) and it's source images in their respective colors, but when exporting the document to a pdf my printer can use, we'd like to make that document a black and white pdf, as it's a black/white manual anyway. A little color conversion isn't to bad, as long as it's reasonable. all images that might give trouble are in greyscale anyway.
So how do I export a full color indesign document to a black&white/greyscale pdf?
ps:
very newb question, but if you don't ask, you never learn:
When do you use the colours "registration", and when do you use "paper"?I am also trying desperately to convert my CMYK colors into a grayscale so that when I print the document the printer only uses K (and C=0 M=0 Y=0)
And I saw this bit of info you wrote a few months ago. I am working working with photoshop CS4. I tried to follow it but I found the following difficulties. Hope you don't mind me writing over your text.
RGB image --> Grayscale
New doc --> CMYK image, same size, empty
Copy Grayscale and paste into the K-channel of the CMYK image. - (It only allows me to copy onto the CMYK layer but not onto the Black so I had to Drag layer onto channel delete the black layer and rename my new layer as black but then the document changes from CMYK to Multichannel and I have to re-change the mode again to CMYK but this already prints CMYK...)
Place image in InDesign doc.
Everything else (vector, text) by K-only.
(...then when I placet that CMYK file into InDesign, and PDF it, on the output preview still separates the grayscale image into CMYK and when I print, the printer still prints CMYK instead of only K)
So then I say OK so.. let's use the Multichannel document instead, which it actually seems to print on K only (while CMY=0), it only allows me to save as PSD. and when I try to place it on Indesign... I have a message saying that this file is using an unsupported colour space, only RGB,CMYK, lab, indexed, and bitmap are supported by the photoshop filter
On top of that I have been asked for a Jpeg image in black and white which prints only K (while CMY=0). I have tried with channel mixed presets and even though the info on screen is now C=0, M=0, Y=0 and K= various values, when I send it to print. The printer still prints with all the CMYK colours
Any advice would be so much appreciated!
Thank you -
IPTC information - export in greyscale
The photo information isn’t shown anymore in the exported JPGs in the IPTC since LR4, but it still functions in the TIFF format. Is there a possibility to fix this error?
I work with Mac OS X Version 10.7.5 - Lion - LR 5
Is there a possibility to export LR5 photos into greyscale?
Thank you for your answer.I cannot duplicate your IPTC in jpg probelem with the same system. Are you exporting a jpg from another file or exporting the original jpg?
Exporting the original (jpg) without saving metadata to it will not embed th enew metadata.
Files cannot be exported as grayscale (single channel) -
I am trying to save my pages document into a pdf format (which I can do no problem). However, I imported some graphics from the internet and they are in color. I need these to be in greyscale for my pdf export. How can I accomplish this?
Apply the Grayscale Quartz Filter to it. You can do this through Automator, Preview, or maybe the Colorsync Utility; I do not remember exactly for 10.5

LR 4 H.264 Greyscale export
Hello,
I converted my files to B&W and viewing them in LR4 they look great.
I exported them to H.264 files and in viewing them in Quicktime, the files are doing wierd digitizing and flashing between positive and negative.
Can anyone help me straighten this out?
Thank you!
ChristopherQuickTime can't extract audio from muxed file formats so you would have had a silent movie.
Try MPEG Streamclip (free) to convert your MPEG-1 file to QuickTime formats. -
Animated GIF not exporting content as pure white?
When exporting an animated GIF from C6 the whites go from 255 to 251? Anyone have any suggestions to how I can solve this? I don't have problems with this when exporting it as another file type.
If you go to File>Image Preview, there's a drop down menu called "palette". This is probably set to black and white or greyscale. Change it to exact or adaptive.

Working with greyscale images in InDesign
I am designing a photobook in InDesign with several B&W images in it. InDesign in currently in PhoPhoto RGB working space. I am having the book printed by LuLu, and they require that any monochrome images in the PDF be in greyscale with a gamma between 2.2 and 2.4.
So I opened all the image files in Photoshop and converted them to "grey gamma 2.2", and then saved as JPGs and made sure to check the "embed grey gamma 2.2 profile" box.
However, when I place those images in InDesign, they look completely different! I went to "Color Settings" and then saw that InDesign doesn't have a greyscale working space. Now I understand why they look so different, but my question is - when I export the PDF from InDesign, will the images look like they did in Photoshop or will they have the "washed out" appearance they have in InDesign?
What's the best way to do this?>I just want to make sure I'm getting all of this. I did also notice that LuLu recommends not converting from RGB to CMYK or vice versa. Since I shoot all of my images RAW and import them into Lightroom, which is in ProPhoto RGB, then I guess that means all of my color images should be exported from Photoshop in ProPhoto RGB and my working profile in ID should also be ProPhoto RGB. Since the working space and profiles are the same in each application, the images should look the same in both. Correct?
That's right, but again if you want to see the a preview of ProPhotoRGB converted to CMYK, you'll need to set your Proof Setup to a CMYK space. In Photoshop I edit color in RGB with Proof Colors turned on and the Proof Setup set to the destination CMYK space.
>You were suggesting converting them to CMYK in Photoshop
No! I was suggesting that you use a CMYK profile as your grayscale profile, which Photoshop allows. So, instead of Edit>Convert to Profile>Greyscale Gamma 2.2; you could set your Gray Working space to US Sheetfed via Color Settings>More Options>Gray>Load..., and then simply convert the RGB image to Grayscale via Mode>Grayscale. In this case your grayscale is profiled as if it were on the black plate of a CMYK file, so if you also use US Sheetfed in ID you'll get a similar preview.
Using a CMYK profile for grayscale in PS is a nice trick, but it isn't going to make or break the jobthere will always be variation depending on how much ink density the press operator is running. If this is the first job you are sending Lulu I would follow their instructions and use 2.2 as the grayscale space, then if there's an issue you can honestly say you followed their instructions. -
Reports - Image resolution : How to minimize file size of exported report?
Our reports are currently using high quality images which makes the file size bigger. Is there any way to reduce the exported report's file size?
Please provide us the way to use lower quality images in reports to minimize the file size.
NOTE: In these reports we are embedding the images (with ".jpg" format) programatically at runtime. Also we are using Crystal Reports XI (Product Version 11.5.0.313) with .Net 1.1 framework.Using an image program like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro you need to reduce the number of colors and DPI while maintaining as much of the clarity as possible.
Here's what steps will help.
Open the image you want to change.
Check the 'Count of Colors used' in the tool you're using. If more than 256 (8 bit) you'll not be able to do much to reduce colors, but most likely the image has a palette of 17.6 million colors (24 bit)
If a color image, try reducing to 8bit, 10bit or 12bit. If a b&w change it to grey scale and reduce. Some forms can be reduced to 16 (4 bit).
Next, check the DPI, usually in the 'image information' tool. If it's more than 200 try reducing to 200.
Save the image in BMP format with RLE compress if possible. Look at it in the image tool to see if it has held up.
We recently pulled 11 pages from a PDF to PNG, changed them to greyscale BMP at 4bit 200DPI and it reduced the RPT file size from 317000k to 2000k. -
Export to PDF ignores document size settings?
I have several documents in InDesign CS4 and when I export them to PDF the document size changes.
I have set all the following options to A4 (210x297mm):
In Indesign: File->Document Settings
In Windows->Printer settings->Adobe PDF->Paper Size
After exporting and opening in Reader 9 the document size has changed to 210 x 303.3mm
This then requires a tweak before the first print run.
I should be able to just export to production and they can print from the PDF without checking the settings!
What have I missed?I am using the export option not printing to PDF.

My file is just text, and it looks beautiful when I print directly from InDesign. However, when I export to PDF, the text has noticeably jagged edges.
I've tried all the included export settings. I've tried printing to a PDF directly. These all look fine in Acrobat, but lead to the same disappointing results when printed.
PDF files that I didn't produce, print perfectly from Acrobat.
What am I doing wrong?Michaela
"I changed the color from "leave unchanged" to "RGB" and the file printed pefectly."
When you "leave color unchanged" you are effectively telling InDesign that the printer will interpret the color values in the document. When you change it to something else (ie: RGB or CMYK or greyscale) you are letting indesign decide what color values to send so that the printer will print closer to what you see. The caveat is that your monitor must be calibrated so that you are seeing color values consistently. And as far as your monitor is concerned black is a color (RGB 0 0 0).

Converting cmyk PDF to greyscale. Lines are being altered!!
I have a big catalog, done in InDesign as a CMYK doc...exported to a Press Quality PDF. Printing it in black only, so I need to convert the doc to greyscale. I've googled for days, tried everything. It converts the doc to greyscale, but it's screwing around with the line weights of any lines I have on the page. I have a 10 point horizontal line at the top and bottom, and the converted greyscale now has a 1 point line! Or I have an Illustrator logo with a 10 point white line around the logo, and the converted document has it down to a .5pt line! It's insane. Everything else seems to be okay. Some of the logos, which are actually already greyscale/black logos, disappear mostly, leaving just a few elements on the page. It's nuts. Last year, I did this exact same thing to the exact same files, and it worked 100% fine. Now, with new versions of ID, Acrobat, it's completely broken.
I'm at wits end. It's 508 pages, and I can not fathom how long it will take me to manually convert the thousands of photos in this thing to greyscale manually. It has to go to press.
I tried converting the master PDF using the Mac Preview app, via the Export > Quartz Filter > Greyscale. It worked correctly, except the prepress guy says all the black text is now 4-C text, so it's useless.
I've tried using Convert Colors under Tools, I tried going through Prepress tools and doing it there, and it's always the same.
Any thoughts here?I exported as a gamma 2.0 directly out of InDesign, and the lines stayed intact. I didn't know you could export as a gs, I was told that you had to export a color pdf, then use PDF tools to convert the colors...but if you mess with the Output settings in Indesign PDF export dialog box, you can get to the gamma 1.8, 2.2, or dotgain greyscale presets, and the PDF came out perfect.
