Export HD 720p to DVCAM tape (print to tape) 16:9 not letterboxed

hi -
i'm trying to export an HD 720p24.00 project to DVCAM tape for projection at a film festival. i need to make sure the 16:9 aspect ratio is squished, not letterboxed, onto the DVCAM tape. what is the best way to go about doing all this? i am exporting to a DSR-11 DVCAM deck.
thanks in advance.

follow up:
actually, if the DV sequence is 24.00 fps, it won't play in an external monitor through my deck, nor will it print to video.
so now i'm trying to put the HD 720p sequence into a DV 23.98 sequence and render and we'll see if that works better.

I'm having problems printing my project to tape. It jumps to the middle of my project (as if that's the beginning) when exporting to Quicktime or trying to print to tape

Do you have in or out points marked in your Sequence somewhere?

  • Timecode in "Print To Tape" not matching

    Hi,
Due to some specs I have my timeline's timecode set to start at 00:58:20:00 and did this via the user preferences. However when I go to "print to tape" the timecode (on the tape itself) reverts to 00:00:00:00. How can I "print to tape" AND have the timecode of the DVCAM match my timeline's code?
    Thanks!

Yup Jerry, that is how I do it:
    TC to DSR-11
Since FCP 4 we have been unable to stripe a new TC such as 00:58:00:00 or 01:58:00:00 to a DVCAM tape with the DSR-11. NO MORE!! I think I found a solution.
Get SimpleVideoOut from the Apple (its free):
    http://developer.apple.com/samplecode/SimpleVideoOut/SimpleVideoOut.html
Then create a QT Movie in FCP or Xpress Pro from a sequence which has the starting TC you want on the tape. I just tried it with 00:58:00:00. In the timeline, I just put Bars & Tone for 90 seconds and a black slug for 45 (to take me over 01:00:00:00). You could create a sequence with whatever combination you wanted with the TC set to start at whatever timecode you need for your choice. But the Timeline TC MUST be set to your desired starting code. The exported QT file will have this TC in it.
Then load this DV QT movie into SimpleVideoOut (having selecting Firewire / Apple Firewire PAL or NTSC when you open the app).
Now load a fresh DVCAM tape and set your DSR-11 to:
    REC MODE = DVCAM
    DV IN TC = EXTERNAL
(Have the TC display turned on for this first test so you can verify it has worked.)
Then just hold the REC and PLAY buttons together on the DSR-11 and press play in the SimpleVideoOut app and the new TC will be recorded to your DVCAM tape. Hey presto you are now able to stripe a tape with what ever timecode you want using a DSR-11.
Remember to turn 'DV IN TC' back to INTERNAL on the DSR-11 when you come to record your edit to tape.
The problem with the DSR-11 is that it is not the best deck and starting recording at the exact TC, but playing with the pre-rolls should eventually get it spot on. I have had some success with FCP's 'Edit to Tape' and very good results with Avid Xpress Pro after a few tweaks.
Also, if you just had a black QT file, you can change the starting TC to suite the tape; i.e. 00:58:00:00 or 02:58:00:00 etc without going back into FCP or Xpress Pro and rendering out another QT. To do this, just use Sebsky Tools to alter the starting TC of the file.

  • Firewire failure when printing to tape with DSR-11

I have a problem printing to tape with bigger projects. I can't put out to tape more then around 20mins, then the either sound or sound and picture drop.
I have everything rendered and exported to a new, not-selfstanding final cut pro file (Quicktime export) and reimported and put in a new sequence. As I found out, this causes the least problems with complex sequences, sounds etc.
The problem might be related to a occasional image drop out while working on the timeline and watching on the external monitor (through firwire). After a while the connection fails and I have to switch from "all frames" to "none" and back in order to continue watching through the deck.
I checked all settings I know, could it be a hardware problem or a problem with the protocoll of the sony DSR-11 deck (I use DVCAM).
    Thanks for your time !
    klaus

    Hello Klaus,
I also own and operate a Sony DSR-11 which has worked out just fine for me. However, I recently bought a new firewire cable to replace my 4-year old cable and discovered that you get what you pay for when it comes to cables. After a while the new cable would slip out of the back of the DSR-11 and I would lose my connection during editing and playback. As part of the troubleshooting process I replaced the firewire cable with a "better" one and no longer experience this problem. My only critisism of the DSR-11 is the smaller firewire connection instead of the larger one found on external firewire devices. Good luck.

Export > Quicktime Movie (using sequence settings)

  • Exporting from Final Cut Pro back to DV tape

Is it possible to export a project done in Final Cut Pro back to mini DV tape? I need to do it in order to put in on a Windows machine at school. Or, is there a way to export it so I can import it into a Windows machine to use with Final Cut Pro? Thank you.

Is it possible to export a project done in Final Cut Pro back to mini DV tape? I need to do it in order to put in on a Windows machine at school.
    Yes,
    - hook up your camera to the computer via firewire
    - put the camera in VTR mode
    - push RECORD on the camera
    - play the timeline
    - STOP recording when the sequence is complete
    - your material is now on the tape.
Gotchas ...Make sure you have set the display and the audio to be sent out firewire to the external monitor (aka your camera).
For an alternative to the process described above, read the manual section on "Print to Tape".
Once at school, your windows machine needs the ability to capture video material.
Or, is there a way to export it so I can import it into a Windows machine to use with Final Cut Pro?
Final Cut Pro does not run on a Windows machine. I don't understand your question.
    good luck.

  • Print to tape problems-Get the audio but no video

I'm going from a QT file I brought into FCS and rendered, et al to tape. I'm able to get the audio track output but no video!
The QT original of my film was 720x486 NTSC 4:3 H.264 and is a .mov file format. Bringing this into FCS, FCS asks whether I want to automatically convert the thing to fit the specs offered in tape output - which, when I actually look in the dropdown for output settings, don't have a 720x486 but does have the usual 720 x 480. FCS chooses the 720 x 480. Ok, so fine. It converts the clip to 720 x 480 and playing back the rendered clip t 720 x 480 looks fine and saves to a QT file fine but when trying to get onto DV tape, the video won't print. I do know it's possible to get a print to tape of my film since a week or so ago, someone made a digibeta output of my film for me using FCS and it came out just fine (I didn't pay attention to what they were doing exactly and perhaps they did some magic that someone else here might be able to fill me in on...).
Anyway, I'm stuck - canNOT get the video track to output to tape. Any clues appreciated. I've been through the output setting module a million times, tried creating a new QT file original to work from, and have confirmed that the recorder works fine because other QT files we created worked fine - though they were 720x480. But shouldn't the conversion FCS does from 720x486 to 720x480 suffice????
    Help!

H.264 isn't supported as an editing format in FCP... convert the files to a supported format. If it seems to be OK in playback in the Canvas, I'd suggest you export it as a QuickTime Conversion movie and choose DV as the format... reimport that and print to a DV deck/camera.
H.264 is a delivery format, not an editing format... resizing it probably hurt the picture too BTW... If it's really critical, then you should do the above to the source clips and re-edit, but choose ProRes as the codec, and keep it 720X486... no resize that way. Re edit in a ProRes sequence matching the frame rate and size. FCP will set it up for you when you drag to it just as it did before, but it will not resize in that case.

  • Text not viewable in TL playback but in Print to tape on empty TL place

Many thanks for reading my problem.I have finished my film on FCP4.5 on 1 GB RAM, 10.3.5 and QT pro 6.5.2 on 2 GHz PMac. All is well when I view text clips from the TL on a broadcast monitor thru a DSR-45 SONY recorder. However when I have taken a print to tape of the entire sequence and now when I play the tape then at the place where certainly the text clip has gone or faded to black( used the Fade in fade out transition) then I can still see a light impression of the text i.e immediately when the text clip ends with the transition I have used black(slug) for 10 seconds and the text is visible there with a slight impression. I thought that this is a VTR problem changed it but the same problem persists. The irony is that the problem does not shows when I simply view the clip on the TL playback. Have also changed the monitor. What should I do to take a Final print as now the project is finished but I am stuck at this stage. I also did a an export of the entire sequence in DV PAL then reimported it back in another project the problem was again coming up in the print but not in the TL playback.
Please please suggest where I could be wrong at.Is it problem of the Hard Disk as I am using an Internal HDD for media acquisition.
Bye and warm regards to all the members.

Don't use the fade in/fade out transition for this. Just use the cross dissolve and see of that works.
This is the Final Cut Express forum, by the way.

  • When sending sequence to DVD or Print To Tape, resulting video is terrible.  Audio OK.  Canvas playback is fine, but external video bad.  First time this has happened.

I've tried making a DVD via DVD SP, also Print To Tape and the results are inferior video.  Audio is OK.  Everything plays back fine in canvas. But external video results very low quality.  First time I've had this happen and I've looked through all the settings I can find -- no clue as to what may be happening here. Any help greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

I'm working with FCP 7.  The resulting video, exported either to DVD SP or via Print To Tape, is poor.  This is an HD sequence, converted to DV.  I've done this many times before with fine results.  What I'm currently seeing is not from the conversion.  Are there are any settings/prefs that might be at fault?

  • Print to tape OR just play the timeline

IS there any quality difference in just playing a timeline and recording it OR use the :Print to Tape" function. At times when a fully rendered timeline is olayed back it will stuter. Shold I Export the timeline as a QT stand alone and play that back to record to tape?

If the new timeline and QT is just referencing the clips and renders and text stuff how does it playback cleaner (no stuttering) on the new timeline?
The reason they usually do is because when you load a sequence in FCP, your machine stores all the edit information -- cuts, level adjustments, render file connections -- into RAM and, for complex sequences, this is a lot of stuff to store. During playback and Print To Video, your CPU processes that edit information from RAM. Depending on the processor load, you can get some stuttering while all this goes on. With reference movies, storing info into RAM is less stressful for your machine since it has a physical file containing the edit information which your CPU can access directly.
That said, zebulun is right, reference movies don't always playback cleaner (usually because of fragmentation of your media files and/or a render issue). In that case, exporting a self-contained movie is the way to go.
I'm hesitant to recommend this upfront because self-contained movies take so much longer to write and reference movies, in my experience, solve 95% of issues.

  • Shot in 16:9 need to print to tape in 4:3

I shot in 16:9 (with Sony DSR500) and I need to print to tape in 4:3. I cannot find a way without squashing my images. (Re-capturing is not possible). Can I export or print a 16:9 timeline as 4:3?

I gave it a try and it is still squashed. (I opened my new squence setting and double checked, it is 4:3. The window is 4:3 but the image was squashed rather than have the edges cut.

  • Loosing audio when printing to tape.

I used FCE to edit my DV-material. It wasn't ever a problem.
I bought a HD-camera (Sony HDR-HC3) and edited a 40 minutes film from about 4 hours footage with FCE HD-3.0.
Editing is no problem. Making a DVD is O.K. But printing to tape is horrible. I loose parts of the music-tracks. Sometimes dropped frames etc. (And it takes a lot of time: about 4 hours to render!).
Many times I tried to print to tape. The problems exist every time in different places (except one place where the music always disappears).
I don't know how to loose this problem. I always mixdown audio, remove prefs etc. but till now no positiv result.
    What to do?
    G5-2x1.8   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi(Bonjour)!
If there is a song bought on iTune Music Store, you can't use this track.
Did you render an audio mixdown before export ?
Try a test version with just one minute of movie. (set in and out point in timeline and do the print to tape operation).
Try a print to tape from a cold start mac.
Drag your playhead around your sequence before printing (it's seem that this process load the cahe memory, at least in my own experience)
If the problem is still there, you can also do an audio track mix quicktime conversion export (aiff 16 bit) from your sequence, import it into a new sequence, open your previous edited one in editor (option clik), do uncheck audio A1 and A2 target, and drag the video content on V1 in the new sequence. Drag your exported audio on A1 A2.
Do a check for the synch of your movie.
Do not forget to do an audio mixdown before print to tape.
Does your hard drive is fragmented or full at more than 80% level?

  • Timecode problems when Printing to tape HDV sequence

I have a project fully edited in HDV format and I want to make a master on tape to archive. I have done this before with no problems but now I have an odd issue. After FCP has printed to tape and I review the footage on the deck (camera is the recording device). The picture is on tape and looks fine but the timecode is not function properly. Instead of running continuously it freezes and then will skip forward some. Again the picture is there and looks fine. I have switched out the decks and the tapes and tried it 5 times but with the same results. What makes this more odd is the first hour of footage runs properly and then after that the problem starts.
I played back other projects like this that I did the same way and the timecode runs correctly. This is a very odd issue and hoping someone else has seen this before and can help. Thanks!

Try exporting the sequence as a self contained movie, then try recording that. My guts say the HDV you're working with is just not allowing your CPU to keep up with it all, and TC might be where this is showing up. But a single file playing back would make things easier on your system all round, and it's lossless. File/Export/QT movie... then check on make self contained, and leave off recompress all frames. This is lossless quality wise.
Sure it's not just dirty heads or something on your recording devices? LIkely not, but it's a shot in the dark from here.

  • Problems printing to tape - Express HD

    Hi
I am having problems exporting a movie to tape with Express – not on all projects just occasionally (and for no apparent reason I can see) and I’m finding it really puzzling.
I’ve checked easy set up option and its set to Firewire Pal Basic (I’m in the UK), refreshed video. Made sure the playback is set to high quality – and when I go through the print to tape routine the camera (canon 700i) appears to respond by moving from pause to record – but all I get is a black screen on the camera whilst the exporting movie appears on the Mac monitor.
Anybody got any clues – is there something I’m missing?
    Many thanks for your help

I Print to Video using the "easy setup" : Apple Basic Firewire.
I import using "Apple - DV Converter". Seems strange that I have to switch setups depending on Inforamtion direction. {the two setups are adjacent in the easy setup menu, NTSC}.
Works both with tape and with a DVD recorder.
Discovered this by trial and err. Hope you spent less time than I did.

My converter is an old ADVC 100 circa '03.
I was wondering if the ADVC 110 experiences the same "feature" or if there are any converters that don't need this "swap". Will ask as a separate post.

  • Minimum Mac G5 for HDV print to tape

    Hi all,
I've been trying to print to tape my first HDV timeline. The error message reads, "Unable to perform print to video operation for HDV as RT Extreme is not supported. Improved CPU Speed and/or RAM needed to enable RT Extreme and HDV Print to Video".
So my questions are, is there any way to turn off RT Extreme? Is my iMac G5 2.0 ghz, 512mb ram insufficient for this operation? Perhaps boosting the ram could eleviate this issue? Does anyone know the minimum Mac requirement for outputting from FCP5.
On a side note, I was able to export the clip, the reimport it into iMovie HD, but I am having an issue with a black bar on the left of the screen in iMovie which I have also posted on that board looking for answers....

Try turning on Safe in the RT settings in the top left corner of the Timeline Window.
    And render everything.
