Export iMovie 10.0.6 on to a DVD or external hard drive?

How do I export an iMovie from the iMovie (Yosemite 10.0.6 ) application onto a DVD or external hard drive?

Thank you so much QuickTimeKirk - there are times when the obvious eludes me!

  • HT202853 iMovie failing to update older projects and events on external hard drive.

I've made sure my iMovie events and iMovie projects files are on the top level of my external hard drive, however iMovie says, "iMovie could not find any events or project files to update" please help.
I only recently updated my computer to OSX 10.10.1 ; before that, I was using OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. Not sure if that has any effect on this topic.
    Here are my specs:
Type: MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011)
Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory: 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    Startup Disk: Macintosh HD
Pretty sure graphics and serial dont matter so I wont put it in.
But yea, I've been trying to figure out what's going on for a few days and have had no result.
This problem's really hindering my progress for a film I'm making and iMovie is getting more and more frustrating to use as it develops.
I hope somebody be able to help me asap.
    Thanks

If you want to try and start over with the iMovie 10 "Update Projects and Events...", remove the "UpdatedToiMovie10" file in both the iMove Events and iMovie Projects folders (the older folders). Then open iMovie 10 and reselect "Update Projects and Events...". My expectation is that you will experience the same missing events problem I have, caused by changing the clip date and time in the previous version of iMovie (9). It's a bug that persists through iMovie 10.0.8 (just released a few days ago). Really really wish Apple could fix this.

Hi, I am trying to move into my new IMac. Everything is good except the old G4 running 10.3.9 with Firefox/2.0.0.20 cannot export bookmarks. I could transfer them via a external hard drive if I could get them to export. The IMac 10.7.2 will not recognize the old Mac.

  • Need help exporting from lightroom 4 on my Macbook Air with an external hard drive.

After importing photos to my new Macbook Air (2014) from external drive, it made me reformat my external drive.  After reformatting, I tried to export edited images back to my external drive and it says "photos missing or offline", even when external drive is connected.  How do I get my edited images back onto my reformatted external drive?

Ok, so at least you haven't lost the images.
The catalog knows "about" the images but not where they currently are. You cannot import them again because they have already been cataloged.
If the images are on the external drive in the location you want, the the procedure to re-connect is as follows.
Select one of the thumbnails. It should have an "!" or "?" on it (upper right). Click whichever it is and you will be asked to Locate the file. Navigate to the file to re locate it and make sure the check box "Find nearby images" is checked.
Lightroom will now relink all the images.
    Note:
I usually just import from my external hard drive and then export them back to the external hard drive when I finish editing them.
this is not a "correct" workflow when working with catalogs. The files remain on the external drive. The act of importing is only necessary once to catalog where the files are and to allow quick access to them via the Library. Editing them either in or outside of Lightroom via Photoshop does not require you to move the file.

  • Exporting "Original" from iPhoto '09 v8.1.2(424) to External Hard Drive

Re: error writing to disk     Feb 6, 2014 8:40 AM    (in response to Terence Devlin)
Terence, not sure of the etiquette here but this is similar to what I am experiencing:
CPE: MacBook Pro 5,5 Core2Duo running OSX 10.5.8 with EHD  Seagate Backup Plus for MAC (1TB) // NOTE: upon reading the posts above I went to the box and noticed that it states for OSX 10.6.8 or higher.
Problem: I have been dragging and dropping files to the new EHD with no problems until I tried to "export" the original format files from iPhoto '09 v8.1.2(424) where there are approx 20,245 items and at 80some GB.  At the point in the transfer of 10,381 and 45.17GB the process fails with an error message to the effect of "Cannot create/Volume/transfer halted" (not exact but essentially what happened).
    Questions:
    1. Is this an issue with the Export routine and the OSX inconsistency?
    2. Can this be resolved with finding the directory the Originals are stored in and simply dragging and dropping like previously?
NOTE: I am much less concerned with organization and such rather simply preserve the original (RAW) files.
Any assistance would be appreciated - Thanks,

The etiquette (and most practical method) is to start new thread or new questions - mixing several different questions in one thread confuses the original poster, you(the new poster) and the volunteers helping here - not to mention that Treadjacking is a violation of the TOU
The can not create volume is usually caused by one of two things - duplicate file names or missing originals
What version of iPhoto do you have and what are you trying to accomplish - note that drage and drop does not give you the RAW photo - it gives you the current priview with limited metadata
If you want you can copy the originals (or Masters in current versions) folder and move it someplace to make a copy of yoru otiginals photos - no matter what their format -however it is not really a good idea to muck around inside teh iPhto library - it is too easy to destroy your library by makeing small mistakes

    1. My apologies - here is the new thread.
    2. Duplicate File Names: Didn't iPhoto name them when importing from the camera media?
    3. Missing Origianls: How would the folder know there is a missing file - wouldn't either be there or not?  Not sure I understand.
    4. The Export Wizard does not provide much detail in what Originals to move it seems it is all or nothing.
    Thanks,

    1. My apologies - here is the new thread.
Good - it will work better (see you already have more help   )
    2. Duplicate File Names: Didn't iPhoto name them when importing from the camera media?
No - when you import iPhoto makes a bit for bit copy of the original using the original file name if possible (and usually it is since iPhoto keeps different importes in diferent folders so duplicate file names are not an issure for iPhto intrnally) - so i you import form different cameras or if your camera rolls over or if yoru camera gets reset and starts its sequence over or if you have yoour camera set t aways start at phtoo1 - or lots of other reasons you can easily have duplicate file names within iPhoto that are no problem until you export a lot of photos - then the finder gets upset because of it
    3. Missing Origianls: How would the folder know there is a missing file - wouldn't either be there or not?  Not sure I understand.
The folder knows nothing - you are exporting and if the export routine can not find the original in iPhoto it can not apply edits and metadata changes and export the photo
    4. The Export Wizard does not provide much detail in what Originals to move it seems it is all or nothing.
When you export you select one or more photos and export exports exaclty what you selected from one photos to all of yoru photos - you choose

  • How to get iMovie '11 to recognize events and projects on external hard-drive?

Hello, my old iMac recently crashed and i bought a new one.  I have restored all of my iMovie files from an online backup service to an external hard-drive.  Now, I would like to add all of these events and projects into my iMovie library on my new computer.
So far, I have tried File->Import->Import Movies and then browsed to the Movies folder on my external hard-drive where all of my iMovie events and projects and videos are stored.  However, iMovie will not recognize that this folder contains any iMovie files.  Only if I browse down to each individual event folder will it then recognize and begin importing the file.  Is there anyway to get iMovie to recognize all the folder, files and events as it was on my old computer and not have to re-import everything event by event?  Thanks for any help you can provide!

    Hi
You must do this the right way.
    • EXTERNAL Hard disk - MUST - be Mac OS Extended formatted
Nothing else will do - for VIDEO !
    • The Moving of Event's and Project's - Must be done within the iMovie Application
Folders named iMovie Event's and iMovie Project's - can not be moved via Desktop/Finder - as links back to iMovie will break and can not be mended.
    My general note on this:
    Moving Event's and Project's
Connection - Either connect one Mac in Target mode to the other via FireWire. Or use an external hard disk !
(Target-Mode - Start one Mac e.g. laptop - BUT keep T-key down during full up-start - Now a FW-symbol is jumping around the screen and it will work as an external hard disk when connected to the other Mac)
    A. The External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work for Video. UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange works for most other things but not for Video whatever program is used (iMovie or FinalCut)
    B. Should be a FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly to me and especially when filling up
    C. Do never Move or Alter any folder named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
on DeskTop/Finder - as this will result in iMovie losing connections to them and repair can be anything from hard to impossibly.
    D. Moving and Copying must be done within iMovie application and Events to Events - and - Project's to Project's.
    E. Moving Project's to Event's - Do not work for me - I have to export project as a QuickTime movie then Import this into Events.
Event's window can show two faces
    Like this
    or like this
from one hard disk Event - You can move it to the other hard disk
You can not (at least not me) move Event to Project or other way around only
Event to Event and Project to Project

  • Save IMovie to external hard drive (LaCie 160GB Mini Hard Drive)

    Hi All,
When I move a movie created in IMovie using "copy" and then pasting it to the external hard drive it will not open completely. I receive an error message telling me that files are not missing. I have run out of space on my mac mini because of the videos so I brought the external drive. Is there a move option instead of "copy" or do I just need to open it and save it directly instead of copy. Some of the movies i move there does work. I have the project in IMovie and then export it to Idvd.
Can someone help me with this problem?

I happened to accidentally format a hard disk thinking I was formatting my
    USB-memory.
    ooch, Bengt!
.. yepp, such a recovery is a costly, time consuming process..
I've once read some stories, including 'burned' (=real life fire) drives, which some specialists are able to recover.. indeed, looked like NASA technology.. ;-))
I needed a recovery years ago, those apps were not as elaborated as nowadays.. I got 800 single files, named just by a number.. and I looked for a specific part of a text.. - hours ... many hours ...
so, I usually like to say: formatting = done. gone. kaputt.

  • I cannot use iMovie Projects / evnets on External Hard Drive

    Hi,
I am a long time iMovie, Finale Cut Pro, X... user.  I have 26 iMovie projects from my mac at school which I copied to an external HD inside of the imovie software.  I've done this in the past to create more space on the mac's hard drive in the past.  Recently, I was told the school district was reimaging all of hte computers so I moved all of the projects (and events) to an external HD (again inside of imovie).   I wanted to edited the movie's on my desktop mac at home but when I attached the external hard drive and open up imovie on my home computer, I can see the external hard drive inside of imovie, but their are no events or projects????).... Yes, everything is uptodate.  I can open the hard drive in a seperate window in the finder (outside of imovie) and see all of the files. I even tried importing and dragging the .rcproject files and double clicking to just open them.  Nothing is happening.    Can anyone help???  Thanks , Joe
    Notes:
    1) Both versions of iMovie are the same on both macs.
    2)  When I open up Final Cut X it also shows the hard drive with the imovie projects / events... but says "no files exist on this disk".... that's crap because I can see them on the hard drive!!!!  What the heck is going on!!!!

Top Level of the Drive!!!!!!! . ...Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.... that solved it.
I had ogranized everything into subfolders, so it makes since... just didn't realize they needed to be at the top level.  Big help and thanks!!
I am marking "This solved my question" because I accidentally marked "This helped" on the reply above.  I don't know how to change it bu Appleman 1958 solved this problem for me.  Thanks Appleman 1958
.... for everyone else with the same problem, please see the reply from Appleman1958 from above.

  • Moving iMovie 09's library to an external hard drive...

    Hi.
I have iMovie 09, but have followed this procedure: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1026 to move my events to and external hard drive. Couldn't find a similar article specific to iMovie 09... I assume they work the same way...
Well, this COPIED the events folder but left a copy still taking up space on my Mac hard drive. Can I just delete the events folder from my Mac safely? If the whole purpose is to save room on my Mac, why does this procedure "copy" instead of "transfer" the files?
I remember a similar procedure for iPhoto libraries, where you'd transfer the library file to an external hard drive then restart iPhoto (now with an empty library) holding Option or CTRL (can't remember) and a hidden menu asking you to point iPhoto to a library file would appear... Is there a way to do this for iMovie 09? even want my Projects to be on the external hard drive... and every time I import clips I want them to default to the external; hard drive iMovie "library"...

Thank you all for the tips.
Workflow that worked for me (might help others):
    1. Make sure the little "hard drive" icon is active within iMovie (listing all hard drives where your events and projects are, on the left hand side). If you never had any events on the external hard drive you will see in the "tree" there but it will be empty.
    2. COMMAND+Drag projects one by one from the upper left panel (where you see their thumbnails and information such as "Broadcasted to Youtube", etc... onto the external hard drive.
2.1 iMovie will ask you if you want to move related EVENTS to the external hard drive too so that the projects don't have missing data. DO THIS or the projects will be broken and you will need to redo them from scratch...
2.2 The step above will move both the projects AND the events they have clips from to the external hard drive to the newly created iMovie Projects and iMovie Events (these are created automatically by iMovie when you drag your events/projects to the external hard drive. You don't need to create those folders in advance. Try it with a small event/project and you will see what I am talking about.
    3. Now that you moved all your projects+related events to the external hard drive you can:
    a. move the remaining events that have no projects related to them to the external hard drive via Command+drag INDIVIDUALLY from the iMovie library itself OR
    b. move all the events at once from Finder > Movies > iMovie Events >>> to the iMovie Events folder on your external hard drive's iMovie Events folder...
I did 3a. just to be safe... but as Sheryl or Appleman said here, it is probable safe to do 3b since there are no projects related to the remaining events that could be broken....
    HTH...

  • I can not get my imovie clips transferred to my external hard drive. I did it before but I don't remember how I did it. I tried dragging it and I tried moving it under the share tab too. Help!

I have a Mac 10.8.2 and iMovie 08. I have uploaded movie's from my video camera onto iMovie, and now I cannot move them to my external hard drive. I was able to do this before, but I don't remember how I did it. I tried to drag it and I tried moving it by using the share tab.
Any information on how I can go about transferring from iMovie to my external hard drive would be helpful.
                                                                     AND
Any information on how I can transfer movies and pictures from my camera directly to my external hard drive would be helpful as well.
    Thank You!

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

  • Is it possible to export my entire library of photos onto an external hard drive?

    Hi everyone,
So, if I'm interested in making a copy of images only (nothing else, no face recognition data or anything like that) onto an external hard drive, would the best way of doing this be to select all the photos, then go to File -> Export and then create a folder in the hard drive and put them in?  Will doing it through File -> Export allow me to put the photos straight into an external hard drive folder, or will I have to do it all on the desk top and then copy from the desk top into the external hard drive?  Also, I assume my photos in iphoto will remain unaffected?
Thanks for your help in advance.

    Correct.

  • How to get iMovie HD 6 to save automatically to external hard drive?

And now: With regard to iMovie:
To get it to save automatically to my external hard drive, do I do it the same way that I would do it for iPhoto, by finding MOVIES in that left-hand vertical panel under "Computer"?
Is it that I take that little icon of the movie board and drag and drop it into my external hard drive? And the same with the Pictures folder? Drag both the icons of Picture and Movies to the External Hard Drive? Or what? I am assuming that I have to take it away from the Internal Hard drive or iPhoto and iMovie will find it there and place files there.
The thing is, can iPhoto and iMovie find the Pictures and the Movies folders in my External Hard Drive without being given a map in the form of a toggled set of instructions, like for iTunes? Are the programs like bloodhounds in that they can just smell where those folders are even if they (the bloodhounds) are blindfolded?
I have ideas for the little videos that I want to shoot, and I need iMovie to automatically put those files in my Big Dog 500 gig external hard drive.
    — Lorna in Southern California

When you first create a new iMovie Project you're
    asked where to save it.
Choose the external drive to store the Project and
all the files will be stored there.
Thank you, QuickTime Kirk. Now I understand why there is no generic "Save Files To" in the Preferences.
This brings up another question now but I have not experimented with it in my iMac: I had old video clips from 2001 in my hard drive and yesterday I moved all my Photo and Audio files from Small Dog Ext. HD to Big Dog 500 gig Ext. HD. Since in 2001 I, of course, must have designated my old INternal hard drive as the place to save my work, does this mean that those clips are now "invisible" unless I manually go into Big Dog Ext. HD to see it?
In other words, by moving those 2001 video clips from my old iMac internal hard drive to my Small Dog 125 gig Ext. HD and now, last night, to my Big Dog 500 gig Ext. HD, is there no pathway from the iMovie application to the clips where they now are stored?
I didn't realize that such questions would ensue if I shift files from the internal hd to one external hd to another ext. hd.
    — Lorna in Southern California
    Edit to say:
Well, now I know the answer. I clicked onto iMovie and clicked onto "Find An Old Project" (or whatever), and rather than finding my old 2001 video clips, I was given a window in which to identify where those clips are now stored. I clicked "Big Dog 500 gig" and was taken there, and from inside there I found my old 2001 clips.
So the answer is: The old clips that were moved from Site A to Site B were invisible at first request, but the option of defining the road map was presented. This presupposes that the person knows where they actually are, and since I do, there is no problem.
But of course in the future when I Save To Big Dog 500 gig, I can immediately access my new clips when clicking "Find Old Project."
