Export iMovie for use on Windows CD?

I have just finished a movie in iMovie 6 which I need to make available on CD to Windows users. I've tried Flip4Mac which converts mov to wmv format, but the results are worse than useless. My lovingly crafted movie has become hideously pixellated, while the colours have become grossly oversaturated. Can anyone suggest an alternative route? I have to get the CDs out in the next twenty-four hours, so the clock is ticking.
Many thanks.

Export as an AVI movie, with lower quality settings. It's found in the Expert Settings. AVI files are both read nativly by Mac OS X and Windows. MPEG-4 could also work.
If size is a concern, export the AVI file with lower quality settings. AVI files are large in file size.
You could always export the movie as a full quality movie and then export again in QuickTime as a "watered down" or less quality movie, if iMovie doesn't offer you the correct settings to make the file size smaller.

  • Export options for use with Windows Media Player

In Captivate 5, what formats can be exported to (now that AVI is no longer a choice) that will work with Windows Media Player? Unfortunately a Flash based file is not an option in this instance.

    Hi there
You could publish from Captivate as FLV or F4V, then use a conversion utility to convert to AVI if you want.

  • Creative Zen Micro Photo not tested for use with Windows so cant install it! Please help

Heya! Basically when installing the software for Microphoto it stops saying that as my device hasn't been tested for use with windows it cant install for fear of corrupting my laptop! Can anyone help me overcome this because i installed it aagges ago and it let me have the option of continuing the installating, but i had 2 uninstall it and upon reinstalling it it does not give me the option to continue. It just cancels the installation. Can someone please help me as this is driving me nuts!! Y is it that technology is continuosly mucking up grrrrr!

Are you runnning Win XP SP2? If so, this is a standard warning about unsigned drivers, but it should still give you the option to "continue anyway" to complete the installation.
Also, make sure you have Windows Media Player 0, as this is needed for Windows XP (drivers) to recognize your MicroPhoto.

  • Exporting videos for use in PowerPoint

I have a seven minute video I am trying to export for use in a PowerPoint presentation. Everything plays fine - the video is more grainy that I would have liked - but the titles just show up as black screens. I can still hear the audio but it will just flash the words for a split second and then turn to a black screen.
Do you have any idea why this may be happening? Is there a different format I should be using or is it simply a PowerPoint problem?

I don't know what "Optimize Stills" means. When I say I'm very new at video editing, I mean brand new. I was able to put together a 45 second news-clip-style video of our latest staff function but this is pushing eight minutes and is an integral part of our organization's upcoming forums next Tuesday.
Do you think I should be contacting Microsoft about what the issue might be with PowerPoint, instead of worrying about my file?
The weird thing is, when I just Export-Movie, it comes out fine in Windows Media Player but wonky in PP. When I Export-Adobe Encode-WMV, it won't even open on my computer or play in Windows Media Player. Any suggestions on compressing the file further without any problems?

  • Exporting JPG for use as as Splash Screen or Thumbnail

I need to produce jpg files at 262x193 and 320x240 for use as thumbnails on a web page, but don't see a way to so this with Compressor.
Currently I have to use Cleaner to produce these images seeing as there seem to be a scriptable means to:
    1. Export first frame of target .mov
    2. Resize to 262x193 and Export as .jpg at Quality 100
    3. Resize to 320x240 and Export as .jpg at Quality 40

So you are looking to PRODUCE jpg images from video, it isn't that you have the jpg's already and want to compress them.
If so, the process you have with cleaner sounds like the only way to go about it - but it is a process you could do in Compressor as well. Just bring the movie into compressor and export the movie twice into the two different sizes you want, and then export your stills from each.
Though if you have Photoshop, you could export all the files just at one size and create a Batch for Photoshop to do all the reszing to the second size while you sit back and watch.

I am looking for a quick anawer.  What is the best format and size setting to use to export a video for use on a web page (I am using DreamWeaver to develop my web site and FCX to creat the movie).  I like the size and quality of the opening video on the Apple home page if anyone knows what that is.

Use the  http streamimg preset so the movie will be compatible with a range of different devices.

I cannot set , in options, use my window and tabs from yesterday, because it is dimmed! I haven't been able to find why it would be dimmed.
I keep 5 tabs open all the time & it is becoming a pain to have to reset them all from bookmarks every time firefox is closed & reopened. just because I cannot set it to do that in options, because the selection is dimmed in options

Because you probably are using private navigation, go to Tool >>Privacy >>in the option Firefox will: change to Remember History, now you can change that option "When Firefox Start" to "Show my windows and tabs from last time"

I made an iMovie, 6.0.3 using music from iTunes and photos from the Internet. It looked fine on iMovie, but when I uploaded it to youtube, some of the photo near the beginning were corrupted on youtube. I tried a different photo, and the corruption took place at the same moment of the video. How do I prepare the video for export to get it ready for youtube? I wasn't sure whether to clik web or web streaming. Am I supposed to clik Quick Time after I clik Share?

I unfortunately cannot remember where I got the 'trrndlines' plugin... I assume that it must have been from CFX (as it is located under /Users/Dom/Library/iMovie/Plug-ins/cfx/XXXtrrndlines.bundle).
As for what it does, I also do not know, as I do not think I ever used it in my previous video projects.
At this stage, I think I just need to uninstall it so that iMovie doesnt try to use it.
Do you know how to uninstall a CFX plugin in iMovie?
NOTE: I have re-installed iMovie 6.0.4 (instead of iMovie 6.0.3), but still encounter the same issue.

  • Exporting for use in Windows

I shot some footage that an associate would like on a DVD that he can copy into Vegas, a Windows program. Am I correct that all I need to do is copy the .dv files out the Media folder and burn onto a data DVD?
A much smaller set of files, called Resources, can be exported from within the iDVD project, but it contains separate audio and MPEG files. I'm not entirely sure what these files are for, since the MPEGs aren't recognized by iMovie or QuickTime.

I don't understand what exactly I should do. I also need to export my imovie project with all the effects, texts, transitions that i've worked on for the Vegas 7. My clips are .mov format with HD signal. What should I do exactly to transfer it to the Vegas project which already contains other of my clips extracted directly from the camera?
What I did in the imovie is the opening credits that I need to join to the movie project already existing on Vegas 7 now.
Please mention some details, I'm still new with iMovie extractions. Thanks

  • Exporting movie for use on Powerpoint - Windows

Does anybody know what settings I should use if I want to use a movie footage on Windows Powerpoint (it is for a friends presentation tomorrow). It is a 8min film. Tried Mpeg 4 - After 30mins it was estimating 500 mins!!! Would another (quicker) encoding format work? Thanks

    Hi Gwyn,
to my knowledge you HAVE to choose the avi container in the QT expert settings... ppt is a bit sensitive with "alien" imports.......
additionally, I would ask your friend, what size/resolution is needed... that makes the files smaller..., don't choose a too high framerate, probably 15fps is enough... ppt needs all resources of the PC, no air left for a smooth video...
500min for a mpeg4 is way too long... you're sure, you didn't incidently choose h264...? that needs indeed DAYS for encoding... , and doesn't work on most PCs......

  • How to Export Aperture Library for Use by Windows PC

Hello and thanks in advance for your help. I have recently returned to using a Mac after years of PC use. I'm using Parallels for some apps that are PC only, an astronomy program, TheSky6, for example. One of the first things I did was purchase Aperture and move my 40GB photo library into it. "Move" is the operative word; I didn't want to use up too much disk space so my photo library now exists only in Aperture. What I didn't realize, at the time I was happily deleting my Photoshop Album library, was that Aperture creates its own universe, and the actual photo files are no longer easily accessible, buried as they are, so to speak, within Aperture folders containing proprietary tags, etc.
Is there an easy way to recreate the folders with just the jpegs, tiffs, raws photo files and nothing else? I realize of course that I could do this photo-by-photo, but it would take an awfully long time. I have tried exporting the projects, but they just export as aperture projects, so that didn't work. I also tried using Photoshop Album (on the pc side), hoping that it would just import the photo files and ignore all the aperture stuff--that didn't work either. A wonderful Apple Script program called "Aperture iPhoto Sync" did work somewhat, but it kept giving me errors before it was finished, and I couldn't keep track of what had copied and what had not.
Learning from my mistake (the story of my life!), I have realized that I would like to keep the photo files accessible to a PC as well. I keep thinking I am missing something really simple here. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

May I humbly and quietly suggest to read the manual before doing anything drastic.
It would have been better to import all your images as referenced masters. Images would have stayed in the location they were in and the Aperture library would only have contained links or references to them. This would not have used up extra hard drive space.
A good site for Aperture is the Bagelturf site.
Have a look at this article in which Bagelturf explains "relocate and consolidate" of images.
    http://homepage.mac.com/bagelturf/aparticles/ref/refrecon/refrecon.html
Considering your objectives, using referenced masters is the best option for you.

  • Best compression for exporting large files from iMovie for use in iDVD?

I have a doco that I've made as separate projects too slow to make it all in one project - which I then exported as Quicktime .mov files. When I assembled the .mov files in iDVD I ended up with 4.7GB of material which iDVD flipped out on and crashed.
What would be the best compression to apply to the large .mov files but reduce the overall file sizes by say 10%
Its sometimes taking up to 6 hours to render each project average total screentime per project is about 70 minutes and each project file size ranges from 1 to 6GB...
I feel like I'm a little out of my depth on this one!
    Any suggestions for this dilemma?
    Thanks
    Tony

When I assembled the .mov files in iDVD I ended up with 4.7GB of material which iDVD flipped out on and crashed... Any suggestions for this dilemma?
Not sure if your 4.7GB reference is for the source files or the resulting "muxed" MPEG2/PCM encoded content. In any case a single layer DVD is limited to 4.7 GBs of total content. To be safe, this usually means you are limited to 4.2 to 4.3 GB of encoded movie and/or slideshow content depending on how many and what type of menus you are creating created. Thus, if you are encoding for a single-layer DVD and your project encoded content exceeds the capacity of your DVD, then this would likely explain your problem.
If your project size reference is for the source content being added to your iDVD project, then it is totally irrelevant and you need to concentrate on the total duration of your iDVD and the method of encoding instead of file size. Basically, for a single-layer DVD, only about 60 minutes content can be encoded using the "Best Performance" encode option, 90 minutes using the "High Quality" setting, or 2 hours in the "Professional Quality" encode mode. Thus, if your content duration exceeds the capacity of your encoding mode here, it would likely explain your problem.
In either case, the solution would be to either burn to higher capacity optical media/higher capacity encoding mode or burn your content to multiple DVDs as individual projects at the current media capacity/encoding mode.

  • Exporting iMovie Project using Compressor.

I've just finished a 4-hour concert video in iMovie HD 6. I wonder if I could use compressor to encode file without exporting full quality movie at first. I have not enough HDD space left. I also tried to import iMovie project file to FCP but the timeline didn't work very well.
    Thx

    Sorry for the delay..
In FCP, use File and Open, then navigate to an iMovie project and select it - which should work even though "Standard Files" is shown as the format at the bottom of the "Choose a File" window. Then FCP will say "Reading Project", and then will ask where to store this new FCP project, and it would normally go in your "Final Cut Pro Documents" folder.
You may then get a "Media Performance Warning", which may say that the media files are not optimised for Final Cut Pro. But just click on OK, and they should load and play perfectly ..at least, mine do.
You say that you get the following error:
"File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown."
That might be some kind of permissions error ..but you don't say what happens next: if it's "0 access denied", that suggests that FCP does have access to the file and should open it ..but maybe it stumbles over that "1 unknown".
So tell us; what happens after you get that error message? ..Does the file open or not ..and what happens instead of it opening? And why d'you get only "..1 file(s) recognized.." if you're opening an entire project which would normally consist of several files?
You say "..when I try to import my imovie file.." ..but why are you IMPORTING rather than simply OPENING the iMovie project in FCP? FCP can read iMovie projects, so it should simply be a matter of opening the project, not exporting it from iMovie and then importing it into FCP.
Look: here's a project in iMovie..
..and here's the same project opened (with File and Open) in FCP:
All the source files are there (..in that little list at top-left..) so that the whole project plays in FCP just as it does in iMovie HD 6.
[..For a bigger, easier to see, view of these pics, click on 'Start Slideshow' on this page..]
As for "..How can I get a copy of QT6 and keep it seperate?.." erm, if you were still on OS X 10.3.9 you could 'downgrade' from QT 7 to QT 6, but I don't know how to obtain - apart from your asking someone who has it - a copy of QT 6 now that only QT 7 is downloadable ..or search amongst your original installation discs.
Maybe somebody else here knows where to find and download QT 6; but I can't think where ..sorry! (..I don't know if this old version will work for you or not, or if it would interfere with QT 7..)
NOTE: That REMOVING QT 7 may interfere with running FCP!
NOTE: That if you have QT Pro 7, then going back to QT 6 may mean that your 'Pro' key will no longer work with QT 6, and you may be left with just the QT 6 player.
..That's why I advised keeping separate versions of 7 and 6, so that FCP isn't affected by the 6 downgrade. To keep them separate, you'd leave QT 7 in your Applications folder, and put QT 6 in, say, your 'Movies' folder. I do NOT know, though, if they use the same - or different - 'preference' files (..normally stored in "com. apple.quicktime.(etcetera)" in <your User name>Library/Preferences and in other Libraries).
I suggest NOT rummaging around and changing/moving/exchanging those preference files unless you KNOW what you are doing, or are advised by a specialist like Karl.
