Export mp4 files from iMovie to quicktime has no video

I have an mp4 video and import into iMovie 08. I did all the cutting and share it to the media brower (or export using quicktime). However, the video has sound but no video. Any things I need to download to fix it? I realized if I import another format video files other than mp4, everything works.

(DivX for some reason causes handbrake to crash so I didn't use that).
DivX, 3ivX, and Microsoft MPEG-4 are all proprietary compression formats. Suggest you try the TV preset for at least a "test" cut sometime. It is basically an H.264/AAC file (uses the X.264 encoder) at 2.5 Mbps. To test it just export a single chapter and see if/how it looks in iMovie '08 (or iDVD if you're not editing.) I personally prefer MPEG Streamclip w/QT MPRG component as I normally use AIC/AIFF or DV/32-bit 48.0 KHz in 16-bit (Big Endian) compression for iMovie '08/FCE/FCP source file editing.

Software Update may have cancelled out your QuickTime PRO license. Did you notice any QuickTime updates when you did the update?
For instance, I have a PRO key for QuickTime 6.5 that was not valid for QuickTime 7 so I had to buy a new one. My first option was to de-install version 7 and go back to 6.5 for the PRO functionality. But later on, that was no longer a viable option since version 7 was the standard for some things, so I just went and paid the $29.99 for the new PRO key.
That could be your problem. Since without a PRO key, you don't have those options available under "expert settings."
I think... (and I've been working heavily with iMovie for years-- never made the jump to Final Cut yet, though have used Motion 2 in addition to iMovie. Works for me. I did get the Studio upgrade, but am waiting to buy a MacBook Pro to use it).

  • How can I export a compressed mp4 file from iMovie (mavericks)?

    Hello everyone,
I had just downloaded the new version of iMovie.
I'm very amazed to see that the funcion "Export movie with QuickTime" is not available.
    I used this funcion to customize parameters of exported videos;
How can now customize parameters? I have to use another external software to produce mp4 files???
    Thankyou for answers.
    Gianmarco

If you use "Share" and choose 540P, 720P or 1080P it will be mp4, withH264 codec.  You just have to once figure out what spefic settings (for example bitrates) are used with the defaults from iMovie 13 (look-up the exported files with info in Quicktime), and wether they are ok with you.
In the former version I already used automator to achieve some specfic settings for my web-video's, now I think I don't need that anymore.
The only way around as far as I know is the usage of QTPro7 or compressor. Export as 1080P and open the file with one of those apps.

  • How do I export a file from iMovie that is larger than 15min?

I currently made a video on iMovie that I would like to export. However everything I have tried ends with a message coming from iMovie saying the file is too long. I've heard of exporting to quicktime but in the share option i don't see quicktime. I haven't tried just putting a usb in and seeing if i can come how paste it in but i don't think that will work.
Need this for Valentines Day any suggestions would be great!

So early i tried to convert it into a file first and at first it said it didn't work. Then the file popped up, but i couldn't open it and this message popped up "To see if additional software is available that will enable QuickTime Player to open the movie, click Tell Me More.". Which was not useful at all. But after a while i guess it completed exporting and i can now access it as a file. Thought I'd share my experience.

  • Exporting MP4 file to iPod Hangs QuickTime Pro

I'm trying to export an MP4 video file to ipod .m4v using Export option in QuickTime - and it just hangs and the status bar stops moving about 1/8th of the way through.
Any idea why? How can I export this file successfully? What options do I have?

The movie is an unusual dimension. Normally video is 4:3 which would be 640X480. I don't see it as an issue (yet).
A 45 minute file is going to take a long time to export. Nothing about the codecs should prevent export.
Could you try with a one minute "cut" and see if it hangs?
Select a minute and "copy". Open a new player and "paste" and use this new file for your export test.
If it "hangs" use the movie properties window to change the video track dimensions to 640X480 and try again.

  • Best compression for exporting large files from iMovie for use in iDVD?

I have a doco that I've made as separate projects too slow to make it all in one project - which I then exported as Quicktime .mov files. When I assembled the .mov files in iDVD I ended up with 4.7GB of material which iDVD flipped out on and crashed.
What would be the best compression to apply to the large .mov files but reduce the overall file sizes by say 10%
Its sometimes taking up to 6 hours to render each project average total screentime per project is about 70 minutes and each project file size ranges from 1 to 6GB...
I feel like I'm a little out of my depth on this one!
    Any suggestions for this dilemma?
    Thanks
    Tony

When I assembled the .mov files in iDVD I ended up with 4.7GB of material which iDVD flipped out on and crashed... Any suggestions for this dilemma?
Not sure if your 4.7GB reference is for the source files or the resulting "muxed" MPEG2/PCM encoded content. In any case a single layer DVD is limited to 4.7 GBs of total content. To be safe, this usually means you are limited to 4.2 to 4.3 GB of encoded movie and/or slideshow content depending on how many and what type of menus you are creating created. Thus, if you are encoding for a single-layer DVD and your project encoded content exceeds the capacity of your DVD, then this would likely explain your problem.
If your project size reference is for the source content being added to your iDVD project, then it is totally irrelevant and you need to concentrate on the total duration of your iDVD and the method of encoding instead of file size. Basically, for a single-layer DVD, only about 60 minutes content can be encoded using the "Best Performance" encode option, 90 minutes using the "High Quality" setting, or 2 hours in the "Professional Quality" encode mode. Thus, if your content duration exceeds the capacity of your encoding mode here, it would likely explain your problem.
In either case, the solution would be to either burn to higher capacity optical media/higher capacity encoding mode or burn your content to multiple DVDs as individual projects at the current media capacity/encoding mode.

  • After exporting a video from imovie, to quicktime, the audio has been duplicated. How can I fix this?

after exporting a video from imovie, to quicktime, the audio has been duplicated. How can I fix this?

iMovie works best with uncompressed audio. If your track is MP3 or AAC, you may get better results by converting your track to the AIFF format and then using that in iMovie.
You can do this in iTunes. Go to iTunes/Preferences and click the General button. On the General page, click the Import Settings button. Choose IMPORT USING: AIFF ENCODER.
(note: remember what you changed it from so you can change it back later, before you import another CD)
Now, in iTunes, select your track. Then click FILE/CREATE NEW VERSION/AIFF VERSION.

Exported a 3 minute video from iMovie into Quicktime, saved to desktop.  System started saving INDIVIDUAL frames instead and entire system froze.  Powered off and on twice - screensaver appears, but that's it - nothing else is accessible

Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
You may now be able to log in and move the files off the Desktop. Then reboot as usual.

  • Exporting DV/HD files from iMovie to FCE-different sizes in canvas?

    Hi!
Desperately need your help. I have a problem with moving my files from iMovie to FCE to edit. Pre cut in iMovie from both DV and HD files (canon 5D) and moving the project to FCE through XML. When in FCE the files line up with different sizes, the old DV files small, 1/3 of the canvas, the HD files perfect.
Are there any settings which can be changed to fix this?
Another problem I have is when exporting to QT the quality simply is not the same as when I export from iMovie and play on 50" plasma. Why? I have tried all options available.
Hope someone out there has some experience and advise.
    Kind regards
    Olafur

I assume your Sequence settings are for HD which would be why the SD files are so small in comparison.

  • Will imovie 11 (version 9.0.8) be able to import the MP4 files from the Canon Vixia HF R 400?

I realize the camcorder is just available now but I assume the MP4 files are the same as in the R300 from last year. I just want to be sure that imovie 11 will be able to import andedit the MP4 files from the canon Vixia before I purchase the camera.I understand that imovie has trouble with some MP4 files and works fine with other ones. I don't want to transcode into another format and generate gigantic files of data. I also understand that the videos with AVCHD has better video but I prefer a easier workflow. I imagine one day Apple in it's infinate wisdom will eventually support AVCHD.

    two options:
    • not exhausting - go to
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html
these devices are tested by Apple 'bout functioning with iM
    choose one = works. guaranteed.
    • exhausting - learn about codecs, containers, bitrates .....
in short: AVCHD is a standard, details e.g. here at wiki
standard means: some settings are conform, some not. example: no 120fps in AVCHD.
    note: there's vers1 and there's a new vers.2 .......
    mp4 - just a container, or 'wrapper'.
means: like a box of chocolate, you could never know what's inside. example: 120fps in mp4.
    but ........
    AVCHD nor mp4 are 'codecs'.
    here comes h.264 - could be in a AVCHD/mts, could be in a mp4.
    iMovie: respects standards.
    does NOT import non-standards-conform files/videos/datas.
encode a 1080video as 30p/h264 = would 'fit' into AVCHD
    encode a 1080video as 60p/h264 = would 'fit' into AVCHD2 (=not supported by iM11), would 'fit' into mp4 (= iM11 supported) ...
mp4 is more ... 'open minded', more general; lacks therefor stuff like gps location data and other meta-tags.
the next iM13 should support AVCHD2, it's bigger brother FCPX does .....
    last word:
iMovie is NO general 'cuts all movin' pictures'-app!
it is meant for consumer convenience with consumer devices.
=> supports the most 'popular' standards. not anything.

  • Exporting from imovie to quicktime movie

I have a 1080i HD movie in imovie I want to export to a quicktime file. In imovie the file is 50 gigabites. When I export at full quality it turns it from 16:9 to 4:3. When I go to expert settings and render it to a quicktime movie only the sound comes through...no video. This only happens with this particular movie. Other short movies I have are compressed to quicktime in HD just fine. I need suggestions how to render this from imovie to quicktime so I can keep the video in HD.

I tried that and it makes a file without
    video...sound only.
Itsounds like you didn't have the Sound box checked.

It's really annoying for Quicktime player to auto-lauch!

It may not be that simple David. They're using a "server" and some of the Apache software may want to launch QuickTime at boot.

I fixed the problem.. but it was very, very strange. I had a very long section for credits and set the line spacing to 1.0.. for some reason this caused it. I removed it, and it worked fine. I put it back, and I couldn't preview or play the video.
I don't know why that could cause that big of a problem, but it did..

  • Why does my exported mp4 file look so bad when it is viewed in adobe acrobat pdf file?

I have embedded an mp4 (exported from premier pro cs6) video file into adobe acrobat and its not sharp viewing of my video anymore. It was a sharp video when viewed in both premier and the exported mp4 files, but once embedded in acrobat it looses sharpness, anyone know what the problem might be? Could my settings  in adobe acrobat be wrong? I would think the problem is in adobe acrobat since the exported mp4 video views crisp and clear before its embedded, any ideas to assure sharpness with my video after its embedded into the adobe acrobat pdf?
Hoping someone has an answer to this, I think my problem might lie within the adobe acrobat settings????
or maybe there is no way around and I need to expect this video not to look as crisp and clear after I embed it into acrobat.... as it is when viewing in premier pro, mp4, etc.????
Any helpful information would be greatly appreciated.
Someone Im sure is taking theri exported premier files and embedding them to create pdf files? Would love to hear if anyone has encountered this issue.
Thanks so much in advance for any help offered.

    Hi Dave,
I just completed a test and comparison between the two PDF's,
compared the file as you suggested with the floating option and changing setting to actual size of the original premier pro / mp4 file size and
the old pdf that did not utilize the floating and file size option.
I do notice a slight difference. The PDF with the floating window with the match of the media clips original dimensions appears to be crisper.
I will be having the final pdf document set utilizing this method for the embeded mp4 movie and hope that the department doing this (next stage of this job) will agree that this is better to use your steps to embed all the video files into a pdf.
Thanks so much for your time.
Hope you had a happy holiday, and hope you have a very happy and healthy new year.
    Thanks, Amy
