Export part of a clip

Can you export just part of your timeline in FCPX, like in FCS, I can mark and in and out point on my timeline and just export that part.. Can FCPX do that?

PS..  Hey Tom..  I appologize if I am coming across as a jerk.  It's not my intention....  I just use the tools I have to make a living and it's an adjustment period to make big changes..  The more time things take me to do, the less I earn at the end of the day.  I'm an efficiancy freak and I just wish Apple would heve left some of the critical things in place...  I'm still toying with moving back to FCP7, but I know that they will not support it any more..  I'm kind of between a rock and a hard place and am trying to embrace FCPX with everything I have, and that includes the constant bombardment of feedback, suggestions and forum posts...  Thanks for all your suggestions and expertise Tom.....
Cheers..

  • Export part of the project

Anybody found a way to only export a section of a project? IN FCP 7 I would just go in the timeline and press I and O to select the wanted area and that's it. It's a very useful feature if I need to export a clip to do some stuff in AE and then bring it back in FCP.
It was also useful because I could leave some clips in the time line that I could use later but they would not be exported because they were outside the in/out section of the project.
The only work around I found is to select a part of the clip I want (I may have to do a compound clip first), copy it, create a new project, past it and export. It's a long and unefficient workflow.
    Ay idea?

Sorry, you can't. Other people have made threads about it too. Your work-around is the only one available.

  • Exporting partly completed imovie to DV tape to re-import later

Hi. Oh dear, feel a bit amateur asking this, but I guess I am!
I've imported some DV footage and have a partially completed edited movie for a friend. They need to give me some more footage before I can finish it and then send to iDVD to burn. There will be a delay though and I want to crack on with other movies I need to work on in the meantime. I only have 60gb to work with so I want to shift the partly done movie off my hard drive so it clears space for me to work on the next project, but of course I will need to re-import it when I get the extra footage at some point to carry on.
I'm not sure how best to go about this. I've read some disucssions but they don't seem to help me, or at least my low knowledge level - I will pretty much need an idiot's guide version!
I think I can export the part finished movie to DV tape, but is it as simple as then re-importing that content back into a new movie project? (and i've heard of others reporting tape judder etc) and what do i need to delete or keep in terms of project files etc to get this to work?
Apologies in advance if this is all rather lame - but very grateful for any help. The simpler the better!

To clarify what is a complicated situation regarding exporting/re-importing of clips...
When we export an iMovie project to tape, then later re-import the tape back into a new project, some clips return as discrete clips and some do not. What happens depends on the source of the clip and their neighbors on the Timeline.
Clips that had a time code when originally imported — clips shot by most video cameras — retain their "clip-ness" throughout the export/re-import process. The time code is exported with the clip back to the camera, which allows iMovie to recognize them as discrete clips when re-imported. (True most of the time, but not always. I've read that may not be true with some PAL video, if I recall. Sorry, no experience.)
Clips created by iMovie — such as title clips, special effect clips and transition clips — have no time code attached for they weren't shot in a video camera. So they have no flag that allows iMovie to recognize them as discrete clips when re-imported. These types of clips return as discrete clips ONLY if their neighbors have a time code. (Then iMovie can recognize them as different from their neighbors.)
But if two or more clips with NO time code stand shoulder-to-shoulder on the Timeline, they will return as a single clip. That's because there's nothing that distinguishes one from the next.
So the result of your re-import, Peter, depends on what clips you have now and their neighbors in the Timeline. The only way to know for sure is to try it.
Note too that if you have a few clips you want to export in their entirety you can Option-drag them to the end of the Timeline — Option-dragging duplicates them— then select each and tell iMovie to Revert to Original. Then export. When they return, you'll be able to edit these clips just like when you first imported them.

  • How is the best way to export my project with clips and videos?

I would like to save my project and export the project with clips and videos included. What is the best way to do it?

    Can you clarify:
    clips and video
Seems as though you want to retain the original media?
Export as a Master File to get a good quality export file of your Timeline.

  • Made a 2 minute edit on Final Cut Express but at the 30 seconds (after I exported), there's a clip showing up that is not in my project, a clip i don't want in there, a glitch, how can I correct this problem? I don't want to start over again :(

    Basically, I have 2 problems:
    1) When I export it shows this clip that's not in my normal project and it ruins my project by having this clip in there; it's like a glitch. I tried to change the clip, and and still doesn't make the project normal again. Tried a new sequence and dragging the project into HD Mode and to no avail.
    My camera:
    HD: 1080p
    Settings: At Hd
    2)
Also, it's only displaying black bars above my project, even after exporting at 720p. I just don't want this random clip in my project or the black bars. I'm using Final Cut Express. Does anyone have any possible idea what this could be? Any help woud be much appreciated! I'm clueless on this.
IS ANYBODY OUT THERE?  : )

    1) Is it a video clip? Something you recognize?  To be clear, it's displaying at a point in your exported movie but doesn't appear at all in the sequence?
    2) What are your sequence settings?  Right-click your sequence and choose "Item Properties" to verify.

  • Clip Notes streaming export causes Reader media clip error

MacPro HDV captured into PPCS4, export OK to Adobe Clip Notes streaming, uploads .mov file to my FTP site OK. The .mov clip plays fine locally in QT. When I open the clip notes pdf in Acrobat 9 Reader for Mac or Acrobat 8 Pro on Vista, both give the same error on opening: Javascript window - error reading media clip. The clip does not load into the pdf, and I can not get error information to debug.
Answer: I need QT streaming server. The Clip Notes streaming is true streaming, not progressive-download or pseudo-streaming. I did not see this in the Premiere CS4 documentation.

    I'm using Vista 64.
I was having the same problem with the transport controls not showing up.
I set AcroRd32.exe to run in XP mode and that fixed the problem with the embedded movie file.
    Transport controls show up.
    Thanks.
I hoped that would also fix the QT streaming problem.
However, if I select "Streaming" and upload it to my server then when the Clip Notes tries to play the file it says "
This happened also before I set AcroRd32 to XP mode.
No problem with "Clip Notes Windows Media" format.  It uploads and plays fine.
The .mov file is on the server.   I can play it fine in a browser.
Any ideas why Adobe Reader won't play a streaming .mov file in Clip Notes, but will play a streaming .wmv file?
You really need to use QT so you can scrub the timeline.
.wmv files don't let you scrub!
Adobe why haven't you after all these years made Clip Notes use flash?
If you did it would truly be cross-platform.
    Thanks.

  • Fcpx - after selecting part of a clip, marking in and out, pressing the e key does not add it to the timeline.  what do I do?

At the Mac store they showed me how to select part of the clip, Mark in an out, and then use the key board shortcut, the E, to move back down to the end of the timeline. At home it refuses to do that. I can't even drag it down. I am using Snow Leopard, not lion. Can anybody tell me why I can't get the material down to the timeline except as an entire clip?

I was stuck in this exact same position yesterday, and wow was it ever frustrating. I can't remember the exact steps I stumbled upon to figure it out, but basically you need to create a "project" (not a "sequence" like you'd think - there is no "new sequence" command in FCP X) and that "project" will in fact be the sequence you are able to add your selections to.
The same real estate the sequence lives in is also where the "project library" lives, which will overtake your sequence if invoked - look to make sure the film reel icon at the bottom left of the screen is not active (blue). If it is active, click it to make the project libary go away.
I'm still struggling with FCP X as a long time professional FCP 7 user, and from what I've read this isn't uncommon. Best of luck getting past these fisrt few awkward hurdles and onto the actual editing (which, I have to say, so far I am having a hard time being precise or creative with).

  • How can I stretch part of a clip only?

I am trying to replace the originally recorded voice audio with a re-recorded, clean version. I used the Automatic Speecha Alignment tool and it did an OK job, but it's not quite perfect. I now need to adjust some parts of the clip that are not perfectly aligned, while leaving the parts that are already aligned correctly in place.
Is it possible to stretch part of a clip, leaving the rest where it is? I think of this like the After Effects Puppet tool, but for audio.

You might get on better with the original method if you break down the parts that you are having difficulty with matching into smaller sections, and reapplying the Speech Alignment Tool to them like that - which is, in a way, similar to what you'd have to do with the clips; ie, split them up.

  • How can I edit part of a clip

How can I edit part of a clip in iMovie.

First, select the portion of the clip that you would like to edit. Do this by dragging your mouse. A yellow border should be around this portion of the clip.
Next, right-click inside the yellow border and select SPLIT CLIP. Now you have a separate clip that you can apply your edit to.

  • How do I select part of a clip to import in Final Cut Pro 10.0.7?

Greetings. I'm a newby in FCPX.  I've been watching Michael Wohl's tutorial and it looks like I should be able to mark parts of clips stored on my HD to import into the event browser.  But I don't seem to be able to mark the clips with either the "i o " keys or dragging.  Only the full length clip can be selected. Is this feature diabled in 10.0.7  or am I missing something?  I also don't seem to have the film strip/list icons at the bottom of the Media Import window.  thanks!

This capability only exists when importing from a camera card or camera archive.
You can't select part of a clip to import from a hard drive movie file.

  • Export part of a movie

How do you export part of a movie to Quicktime after setting in and out points?
    Thanks for your help

I believe this is correct. Although I haven't had the need for Compressor yet (therefore haven't bought it yet), as far as I can tell and have heard, you export the entire thing into Compressor at which point you can mark in and out points for the compression and export of your final product. It can't be done in FCPX alone, unless you duplicate your project and delete chunks of it to export only the parts you want.

  • Retime part of a clip

    Hey,
I have been playing around with Final Cut X seeing what it CAN do. It has taken some getting used to, but it had some really nice stuff in it for all the things it's missing.
To the point though, I have been playing around with the retiming feature. Any time I try and highlight part of a clip and speed it up the whole clip gets the speed change. The UI green and blue bars correctly appear of each part of the clip, but the part that says it's playing back at normal speed actual plays back at the accelerated speed.
Any one else seeing this and have a work around?
    Thanks!

In this workaround the speed change will not be smooth.
When you select only a part of the clip there is automatically a smooth transition applied to and from the speed change.
I found out the bug will not show whenever you apply the selection to a clip,in between two, or more other clips.
Only applying the change to a clip at the end of the storyline or to a clip which is followed by a "filler gap", ore to a only clip in your storyline will invoke the bug.

  • How to export many single video clips

I have around 25 videos in my project window that I want exported. Originally they were longer and I changed the in and out points. I now want to have these corrected videos saved to a different location on my computer. I still want the long video clips, but want the short or corrected ones too.
From what I understand, I would have to drag them individually to the sequence and render each one individually. I would rather not actually make a sequence with them all in one video but instead have them separate.
Can anyone help me with this? Thanks for you time and effort.

    Here's what I would do....
    1) Drag all 25 clips to one sequence (5-10 seconds)
    2) Right click on each clip, one at a time, and choose Nest (2-3 minutes)
    3) Double-click on the first clip, which will open it's nested sequence on the timeline. Go to File>Export, then choose all your export settings and file-save location. Now click on Queue to start Adobe Media Encoder. After beginnig the export of the first clip, the export settings will remain the same for any clips you export after it, until you change the export settings again.
    4) Repeat Step 3 for each remaining clip, excepting that you will not need to do export settings and file-save location again.
Total time: 15-20 minutes. Rendering time will vary.

  • How do I put a censor bar over a part of a clip and adjust it frame by frame as subject moves?

I need to "censor" some parts of a clip to cover up those private parts exposed in some family videos of my young kids. I tried using a graphic, but every few frames, I had to put another one and this took over an hour, and I got maybe 5 minutes of footage actually "covered", though it looked hideous.  I am surprised that nothing I have found seems to even address anything remotely similar that I can follow for instruction.

Unfortunately, you have posted to the Tips & Tricks sub-forum, which is a repository for articles on how to do things in Premiere.
I will Move your post to the main PrE Forum.
As for your question, I would create a Filled Rectangle in the Titler, sized as necessary, then Keyframe the Fixed Effect>Motion>Position, to follow over the subject's eyes.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Export parts of my library (referenced) to be used on other Mac w/ Aperture

I need to export parts of my library (all items are referenced, none internal) to be used on other Mac with Aperture. So my images, projects and albums shall end up on the other Mac in Aperture. A simple proejct export doe snot do the job as the path to the referenced images are not available on the other Mac. Thus, I need to hand them over within the project, or how?
How can my workflow look like to be able to do this export?

Have you tried exporting the items as a new library?
    1) In Aperture 3 select the projects you want to export (you can command-click to select non-contiguously)
    2) Go to File>Export>Items as New Library…
    3) In the following dialog you'll have the choice of consolidating the files in the new library package: do that.
Once this is done you should have an independent library containing all the needed files. When you've copied this new library to the other computer, you can keep the files managed or simply use Relocate Masters to put them on another referenced drive. It should work.
