Export photos to iMovie

Procedure to export photos (and video) to iMovie.

Yes I agree with Barbara, although if you export originals to the desktop and drop them into a new project, you can get good results. By default iMovie automatically adds Ken Burns style to stills, so you get instant pan and zoom. This can be adjusted on individual slides or removed completely. The other thing is that when you save a project in iMovie you automatically get four copies, including two highly compressed copies. It’s hard to find them unless you open package contents. Then you will see:
720p.mov; 1080p.mov large.m4v and medium.m4v
The 720p and 1080p files can be used on sites such as YouTube or Vimeo.
It’s really no different to making a wmv file on Windows, which has similar drawbacks. Personally I would use iPhoto for stills. Simply right-clicking an event and choosing play slideshow (for displaying on my Macbook Pro) and I would only use iMovie to mix video and stills in the absence of Premiere Elements.

  • Exporting photos into iMovie

I import photos from my camera into iphoto as raw.
When I want to import photos into imovie they come in as raw, how can I change the format into jpeg, and still keep the raw file in iphoto?
    Thank you

    Merelyn:
Upon import into iPhoto, RAW files get a jpg version generated by iPhoto for use and editing. No editor will or can modify the original RAW file. The edits are always saved to some other format, jpg, tiff, etc. Those jpgs should be the ones that are exported/imported into iMovie for use via the Media Browser. iMovie will copy them in and resize to the size it uses. So there should not be a problem with the large RAW files.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Issue with photos in iMovie - looks normal in timeline but won't play

I'm having an issue with importing photos into iMovie. I've done it many a time without trouble but suddenly, when I really need it...ahh!
The problem is with a video I've already exported once—I'm not sure if that's related. I created a slide in Powerpoint, made it into a jpg, then dragged it into my timeline (also something I've done before without issue). It looks totally normal in the timeline, but when I play the video it shows a still from the previous clip instead of my photo. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!

Gah. This is where I'm at...I'm using the code from above and
my mp3 sound file is ID'd in the linkage properties as monkey7.mp3
    and it's still not working.
What buttons should be checked in the Linkage properties? If
my id is monkey7.mp3 and I check the Export for ActionScript
button, my sound file plays multiple times and it still won't stop.
If I do the same thing but ID it as "monkey7.mp3", it plays
    correctly but won't stop.
I don't know if this matters but my mc where my sound file is
located is one frame. Is that correct?
I'm sure the code is correct but I'm missing something and I
    can't figure it out!

  • How can I make a still photo from imovie

How can I make a still photo from imovie?

Let's assume you have iMovie 11 (Version 9). (If you have a different version, let me know. The instructions will be different.)
First, get an app called MPEG Streamclip, which is free. (google MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5)
    Open MPEG Streamclip.
In iMovie, select the clip you need. Then, right-click/Reveal in Finder.
Drag this clip into MPEG Streamclip
In MPEG Streamclip, move the playhead to the frame you want.
In MPEG Streamclip, click FILE/EXPORT FRAME.
Choose JPEG, TIFF, or PNG and give it a name.
You can then drag this photo into iPhoto.
I have created a short video Tutorial on how to do this. There is one error in the Tutorial, where it says that Command-click is the same as right-click. I should have said Control-click instead.

  • Photos into iMovie: yes, it's been addressed, but...

... I can't find exactly my issue, at least not recently.
Many of the posts on this topic seem to be about exporting to iDVD, but that's not my problem. It starts earlier. My photos get compressed and look terrible as soon as they're imported into iMovie. I have '09, but the local Apple Store didn't think upgrading to '11 would help, because -- such as I understand -- a single large photo is much bigger than a frame of video or something more or less like that.
Now, I pretty much just want to do slideshows, high-quality slideshows, and I don't even care about Ken Burns effects. But before you say: DON'T do this in iMovie! That's not what it's for! Do it in something else! Consider:
-People I know who use Final Cut Pro (which is more than I want to invest, anyway) say that it, too, has problems importing and manipulating photos. No one I know has Final Cut Express to play around with, and there's no Free Demo, obviously.
-I've now dabbled in both FotoMagico and Photo to Movie, and they seem to have some things going for them, but I can't seem to control audio in them as well as in iMovie, and that's a huge problem. I need to control fades precisely, and I need multiple audio tracks to layer and cross-fade.
-Other programs I've dabbled with, such as Aperture 3 and Sounds Slides, also have limited ability to manipulate sound and/or adjust the length of individual slides.
-One responder in a forum last year named Klaus  suggested an elegant work-around: create the slideshow in Photo to Movie (which he uses) or FotoMagico (which he guessed would work ok), and then bring it back into iMovie as a .dv video clip for sound editing and finishing. I tried this, but P2M compressed the images when I saved as a .dv (back to square one), and I couldn't figure out a way to export in FM that iMovie would recognize.
    So . . .
Is there a better way to import photos into iMovie to preserve integrity? (I don't think so)
Is there a better way to export video out of FotoMagico or P2M into iMovie?
Is there something I'm missing about their sound editing capabilities?
Can Final Cut Express do what I want without much more excess capacity than I need and a huge learning curve?
    Are there any other programs?
Klaus, Bengt, others -- please weigh in!!!
    Thanks, Danke, Merci . . .
    Fred

Understanding your data use is important, Rustyhinges! There are many things that can factor into a sudden increase in data. Thank you for ensuring Facebook Video is off. You can also view which applications are using the most data by going to Settings, Data Usage and scrolling to the bottom. As Android_Optimizer mentioned, making sure the device is not syncing to cloud services and restricting background data are great steps to keeping the phone data use, controlled. Please let us know if you have further concerns on this. Thank you.

  • Corrupt photo in iMovie

Was importing a photo into iMovie 8.0.6 and it crashed. Was never able to get it running so upgraded to 9.0.2. Now the 1st photo in my show has another photo overlaying it. If I delete it, the phantom photo moves over to the next area and still plays. It seems to be imbedded in the timeline somehow.
    Any ideas????

I have a similar problem - IMovie 9.0.3. Worked on a 33 minute video for weeks. Now a photo from about 23 minutes into the video pops up during the first transition of the video ... not a very clean beginning to the movie. Must be a bug in the software. If I remove the cross dissolve transition at the beginning then it may go away ... a compromise on quality. Or when the video is complete maybe export as a movie then bring in as a full movie clip ... cut out phantom photo and put the transition in at the beginning ... will the overall quality be as good? Frustrating. I just hope that the movie doesn't get any more corrupted ... like it did a couple of times with iMovie 09.

  • Best, export slideshow in iMovie, for online viewing

I tried exporting my 5min slideshow in iMovie using this setting:
    go to>share
    export using quicktime
    export as: mpeg4 settings>
    file format: mp4
    video format: h.264
    data rate: 1500 kbits/sec optimized: cd/dvd
    image size: 1280x720
    key frame: 12
    frame rate: 12
    video options>
    restrict profile to: main
    encoding mode: best
    ~
So far, this is good file size for online uploading, and good quality. Good enough. But there are still color issues, like some color blotching, and color transitioning, and the quality of the photos in the imovie when exported is not as good as when I view the slideshow in imovie. It's very important that the quality of the photos remain top quality as this for fine art photography promotion.
If you have any ideas how to export slideshows from imovie, in top quality, please reply. This is for online viewing, to be uploaded in free-hosted sites like youtube, facebook, multiply, etc. I am aware that youtube and facebook have HD options for video viewing. I need someone's help. Thanks.

Yes, I did. Not so good. The settings I mentioned above is actually the best I've tried so far.

  • What are highest quality export settings from iMovie to FCE 4.0?

I am using iMovie '08 to create Ken Burns effect movies from iPhoto photos to import into FCE. I want the least amount of loss from iMovie to FCE.
What are the highest quality settings for exporting from iMovie to FCE.
I do not care about size of file etc. Highest quality is all that matters to me.
    Cheers,
    Chuck

    Well here are the facts.
My original question rephrased: "I want to know what are the settings to export Ken Burns created movies (therefore using photos) from iMovie (in this case iMovie '08) with the least loss and regardless of file size for importation into Final Cut Express".
I went to the local Apple store and some of the users (employees) of Final Cut Pro mentioned appropriately they thought .DV would be the best. However when we played some created videos they looked horrible when compared to .MOV with H.264. This just did not make sense, but we went by what we were seeing. Not being able to think with this I did more research and found this article which explained why .DV lookes like pooh pooh compared to H.264 video.
The article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93002 explains a setting in Quicktime preferences that if not selected some videos appear pixelated.
So, when this preference in Quicktime is selected (never thought to try playing on VLC) the .DV movies look better than those using H.264. So with this resolved then my trial and error testing was realistic. That is I could try different export settings and see which ones looked better to determine the best export setting.
I tried what I thought was everything as far as "Export using Quicktime..." settings. Then I read in "iMovie '08 & iDVD: The Missing Manuals" under "The Video Codecs: A Catalog" an explanation of every type of compression when using the settings under "Movie to QuickTime Movie". Finally someone wrote more data on the codecs. I never found such explanation on the apple website (discussions etc). I really got tired of reading how H.264 is the better than sliced bread "greatest quality for the file size" which I think is true but did nothing to answer my original question. The book then mentioned the option "none". I was like I don't remember this option for "Compression Type". (BTW this all applies to iPhoto '08, Final Cut Express 4, and QuickTime Pro). So I tried "None".
Wow! Zero pixelation! Vivid colors! So I created three videos. One using H.264, DV/DVCPRO - NTSC and None (I had already tried many others but for this last experiment just these three). I also maxed out the Quality for each compressor. Results:
    - H.264 colors looked a little faded from the original photos and minor minor fuzziness, file size about 6 MB
    - DV/DVCPRO - NTSC colors a little more vivid and less fuzziness, file size about 60 MB
    - None...Bam! absolutely photo quality resolution and color, file size about 600 MB. I didn't care about the size.
So, bingo "None" as as the compressor settings in Quicktime to export iMovie '08 Ken Burns effect slide shows for importation into Final Cut Express (FCE) with minimal loss and who cares about the file size. Yeah, this is mammoth file but this allows me to make snappy Extremely High Quality Ken Burns effect videos in iMovie for FCE. Then when I export from FCE I don't make a copy of a copy but make my first compression of the video.
    That is my answer!
I consider this thread closed and will only open if I find any of this is incorrect. BTW I already imported the iMovie '08 video with compression "None" into FCE and after rendering it looks awesome and plays well.
    Cheers,
    Chuck

  • How do you import photos into imovie?

How do you import photos into imovie?

If you can open a Finder Window to your photos, you can drag them in to an iMovie project from the Finder.
Some third party apps might support drag and drop, but I haven't got Lightroom to test it. If drag and drop from LightRoom does not work, try exporting from LightRoom into a Finder folder and drag them in from there.

  • How can I export photos from my iPad or iPod to my main computer or hard drive. My old computer died and I want to get my photos onto my new computer. Thanks in advance.

HOw can I export photos from my iPad or iPod to my main computer? My old computer died with my photos on it but I want to move my photo library from my iPad or iPod to the computer I just bought. Thanks for any help you can give.

Sorry but your iPhoto library is not on an iPad or iPod - you may have photos there (most likely low resolution copies) but not an iPhoto library - dying computers (along with software and human errors) are why you always must have a backup - now is the time to load it

  • How do I export photo's from one user acct. to another user acct

Trying to export photo's from one user acct. to another user acct. on same computer into second users Iphoto app.

File -> Export to the destop. Drag to Users/Shared Folder and then import from other account.
    Or use iPhoto Sharing:
For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
