Export quality lacks lightroom edits

Images I make adjustments to look great in lightroom and open up fine in photoshop, but whether exporting from lightroom or photoshop they seem to display without any of the edits save cropping.
In windows (XP) picture & fax viewer, ms office picture manager, IE, even a snagit screen capture (!?), none of what I did shows up, whether exporting as tiff or jpg, at 8 or 16 bit depth, at 96 or 300dpi, as RGB or sRGB.

As the others said. Of all the apps you mentioned, none are color managed. This means that they will not correct the color information in the files for the response of your monitor before displaying. This usually results in flat desaturated pictures. You can only see correct color in color managed apps such as Lightroom, Photoshop, Safari, and lots of other apps and then only if you calibrate your monitor's response somehow (preferably hardware-based). Unfortunately, hardly any Microsoft app in Windows XP is color managed. They fixed a little of this shortcoming in Vista though, but Internet explorer is still not managed.

  • Editing and image quality in Lightroom

    Hello all,
I am a new Lightroom user (Lightroom 5) and I've watched several tutorial videos and I've had a lot of fun playing around with the program.  I've noticed that Lightroom is said to be "non-destructive" when it comes to editing.  Apparently, you can do all the editing you want to an image (i.e. adjusting exposure, cropping, etc.) and there is no loss of image quality as you edit.  Is this correct?
I would hate to think that my tinkering around with the editing tools results in loss of image quality each time I change something.  ("Hmm, I like that exposure.  Now let me adjust shadows.  No....that doesn't look right when I do that.  I'll just change the exposure a bit more...."!  I intend to put photos onto an image hosting site and present them, so I want the quality to be the best it can be!
I appreciate any help anyone can offer.
    Cheers,
    Tom

I know of no image editing software that causes loss of image quality when you make an edit. Editing steps simply cause a change to the image based on the edit you perform, not a loss of quality. This is true of Lightroom and every other image editor that I know of.
If you choose to save (or in Lightroom do an export) as a JPG, then there is a loss of image quality each time you perform a save as a JPG. If you need to have a JPG of your edited photo for some reason, then this loss of image quality is unavoidable, but in most cases you won't even notice. Thus, in Lightroom, creating a JPG from the edited photo is the LAST step in the process, thereby minimizing the image quality loss.

Same here. I've never had trouble with this function before.
It opens the Photoshop application with all the menus/windows, but it never opens the actual image I chose to work on.

  • Lightroom 1.1 = horrible export quality

Lately I've been noticing pics I've taken that are saved on my computer don't look so well... After some trial and error I figured out when I export pictures form Lightroom ii .jpeg files at 100% quality into folders on my computer there is a HUGE lose of quality. The pictures look grainy, the color is off, the bright colors are dully to a muddy neutral colors. Perfect example... click the link

Don't mind that it says posted on the net, that was my original problem, low quality pictures when putting them on the internet, that was before I realized the problem with the exporting pics from lightroom. But either way you can see a big difference is color and quality.
Last night I took some pictures right as the sun over the horizon with the sky showing up a brillant blue color, after exporting them form Lightroom the blue was now a pixelated looking dark purple, I was not happy.
After some thinking I realized this was never a problem before and they only thing that has changed is going to Lightroom 1.1. So I uninstalled Lightroom, and reinstalled version 1.0, took the same pic imported it, exported it and it came out perfect. The picture looks exactly how its surpossed to look. Just to verify that 1.1 was the problem I reinstalled the update and tried again. And once again with 1.1 the image quality is garbage.
Whats the problem? Should I say screw it and just wait for 1.2 to eventually come out?

No, I really meant to say that Photoshop is not easier to work with if you're not (consciously) using color management. Photoshop is *always* using color management, even if you select 'don't color manage' upon opening files. In that case, it simply assumes the image is in your standard color space. That will often be sRGB or Adobe RGB, but the user can make it anything he/she likes (and in doing so, can easily make matters worse).
The closest thing to 'no color management' in Photoshop is when you select your monitor color space as RGB working space and open all files 'without color management'. Then, the numbers will be sent straight to your video card. However, this brings you back to square one, with color unreliable as ever - but it *is* consistent with unmanaged browsers.
I think it is impossible to get both 'good' and reliable color without some color management effort from either the user, or the hardware and software developers. The only way to get an unmanaged browser/system to show images similar to PS/Lightroom (and not botch up color management in the process), is by exporting images to the target monitor's profile. Unfortunately, monitor responses are all over the place, so sRGB is your best bet. It then all depends on how closely your particular monitor resembles the sRGB model.

  • Export a lightroom-edited foto as original to Photoshop

    Hello,
normally when i edited a foto (CR2) in lightroom and i wanted to do some more complicated retouching work in photoshop i got an extra window where i was able to check if i wanted to export it as a copy with Lightroom-edits, a copy or the original.
(i use the CC version not CS5 as in the picture)
Currently i cant do that anymore. the foto just opend in Photoshop without asking me. It only works with jpeg, tiff and psd.
I was doing it for months and it worked well.
Has anyone an explanation to it?

You don't get tis dialog for a raw file. Only for jpegs, tiffs, and psds. With a raw file, if you want to edit the version as it was after import, create a virtual copy and reset the develop settings on it. Then hit edit from that.

  • Exporting photos from Lightroom that are good enough quality for a photography website.

I am doing a website for a photographer client that need to showcase their images in a rotating gallery that will be about 1/2 the page so pretty big. She gave me all the photos in FULL size which meant that they were excellent quality and looked amazing on my computer at home as I have fast internet and they all loaded up in seconds. Only problem, when I tried it on a different internet source that wasn’t as speedy, they took so long to load that the next one would start, hence no images ever being visible. This is not good as not everyone will have as fast internet as me and it’s pointless if no one can see her work.
She then exported them for web, using the normal settings that she usually would, leaving them around 200-600KB which loads up nice and quickly, but the quality just don’t do the photo’s justice AT ALL!
I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions of the setting to use to export them from lightroom so that the quality is still next to perfect, but they are small enough so that they load up in a reasonable time on the web.
Each photo displays for 5 full seconds before alternating.
Thank you in advance and if you have any further suggestions, I would love to hear them.

You need to use export settings similar to this:
Quality setting should be at least 60, but you can sometimes get away with less. (smaller file size)
But if you need to export a lot of images, do them all at 60, and re-export as necessary. If you for instance see blockiness in a clear blue sky, increase quality until it goes away.
Color space must be set to sRGB.
Set the required size in pixels, using Long edge is quite convenient. Whatever you enter in the resolution box doesn't matter - web browser ignore ppi.
Experiment with Screen sharpening to find the setting that works best. Standard usually works OK, but it depends on the sharpness of the original.
Set Metadata to Copyright Only, this keeps file size down.

  • Why are my photos desaturated when I export out of Lightroom 5 and editing with VSCO Film filters?

I have been excited working with VSCO Film presets, however when I apply them and go to export out of Lightroom 5 on my Windows 8 computer, my images are previewing very desaturated and muted in color. Some images are below. I thought it was a Color SPace issue, but when exported as sRGB as well as in its original space of Adobe RGB1998 it is still desaturated. Any help?? In Lightroom the colors are right, but my preview application is different.
    Thank you!

    Hi ssprengel,
    Here's some clarification:
Here's a screenshot of my raw image in lightroom without any presets:
Here is a screenshot of my raw image with the presets (the way I want it to look upon export):
Here is a of the jpeg exported out of LR:
(on my screen the jpg looks like what it should when I attach it, but I know once I post this it will not look like it. That's something I noticed when I posted my question previously)
I took you suggestion and re-imported the sRGB exported JPEG and it looks like how it is supposed to be with the correct saturation. Here's a screenshot of the jpeg reimported.
Here is a screenshot comparing the LR5 preview to the Photos preview on Windows 8. The LR5 (left) is more saturated, the correct way I want it:
I cannot use Windows Photo Viewer because this is how my photos look like in it:
Hope this all makes sense! Thank you so much in advance!

  • Exporting Jpegs from Lightroom - DPI question

When I export Jpegs from Lightroom, I set the dpi to 300 pixels per inch. I do not specify a max width or height. When I view these files in Adobe Bridge (CS2 or CS3) the file info says 300dpi. However, when I open the files in Photoshop and select image size, It says 72dpi and has the document size set to very large. I realize that I can enter 300 dpi and uncheck the resample box, I am just confused as to why this is happening.
My concern is, that I upload my images directly to my lab after exporting from Lightroom. Will this cause problems?
    Thanks in advance!
    David

the image resolution is a combination of the two parameters you mention: size and dpi. a very large size at 72 dpi is equivalent to a small size (like 3x5) at very high dpi. for printing you want at least 240 dpi at the largest size that allows you to keep that resolution. for screen presentations or your web site you want jut 72 dpi. 72 dpi and 2x3 inches will require a very small file size.
I suggest you to export images at TIFF and not JPEG as that will allow you to preserve the image quality when doing editing in PS.
In my case I export TIFF for PS (when I need PS editing) and 72 dpi JPEG for my web site (that way if somebody downloads my image illegally thy get a poor resolution copy). But since LR works very well for me 90% of the images re just kept in raw mode and I print from LR.

    Hi Ashley Clavette,
The Initial view setting works perfectly when the file is opened in Acrobat after setting the desired Initial View.
When you upload the file onto Wordpress, and view it on that website in the browser...it might be using a different pdf handler program which might be causing this issue ( it would be helpful, if you could provide the screenshot) , however when you download the pdf again from wordpress server...and open in Acrobat/Reader...then what  exactly happens ?  Does the pdf opens in the desired Initial View setting?

  • Export from Aperture to edit in Windows Live Photo Gallery

    Hi.
I'm hoping to work collaboratively with a colleague, in a scenario where I take & edit photos, then pass them over for a possible final touch up before being forwarded to clients.
I use Mac OSX 10.6 and Aperture. He uses Windows Vista and Windows Live Photo Gallery.
The problem we've come up against is this: he is unable to edit the image I've exported from Aperture. I'm exporting as .JPG, and he's able to read them ok - i.e. load it into Windows Live Photo Gallery, but not alter the image.
Does anyone have a similar workflow, exporting from Aperture, then editing in Windows Live Photo Gallery?
    Thanks in advance,
    PB

    Hi Frank.
    Thanks for the response.
Agreed, the pertinent question is why can't my colleague edit the JPG exported by Aperture. It's probably also worth pointing out, the same problem occurs with JPGs exported from iPhoto.
The Windows software usually plays nicely with JPGs by all acounts, just not the ones I send - which I do via eMail or my public space on Mobile Me incidently.
So, another key question is: all settings being equal (color profile, quality, etc.) are the JPGs as produced by iPhoto and Aperture indistinguishable from those produced by other apps on other platforms - i.e. does the use of JPG enforce a common standard?
If that is the case, I suspect ours might be a permissions issue.
According to the Microsoft support page on editing in Windows Live Photo Gallery, the inability to edit a picture is commonly caused by unsupported file type, or read-only attribute set on the file.
Unfortunately, he and I are not in the same place, and he's not particularly au-fait with this type of problem solving. Hence, before involving him, I'd like to know:
    1. it's possible (i.e. someone else does it), and,
    2. what's involved (at my end and/or his).
    Thanks again,
    PB

  • When exporting out of lightroom the color of my picture channges significantly

I use windows 8 and tried exporting out of lightroom through firefox and this did not help either

Hi Shmuglak.  Thank you for the information.  I tried those things but did not work.    I just got windows 8 and just downloaded photoshop CC and Lightroom from the cloud.   My settings in Lightroom under preferences are :   Under jpeg preview it is checked on fast load data.   Under external editing the color space is prophoto.   Under additional external editor it is set to preset (Custom).  Under Default Develop Settings the only thing checked is apply auto mix when first converting to BW.   Under export module:   Location:   set to same as original folder and no check mark on add to catalog.   Under Post Processing I have tried do nothing and tried firefox.
It is funny that when I export a picture from lightroom using firefox that picture  pops for preview and the picture looks fine but then when I go to my email and try to email that same picture and use send with a file attachment the picture looks aweful on my desktop but when looking at it on the ipad or iphone the picture looks fine.
Any other suggestions would be great
    thank you

I don't know if this is your case but I have a similar problem (and has been helped out by some kind soul on this forum). The change of color may happen if you are re-importing the exported pictures into the Lightroom catalog. If this is what you are doing, some import presets may be applied and this may cause the color change. I'm talking about this setting, sheck if it is enabled. If it is, disable it and see if it helps.

  • So what's the export quality like???

Hi, after the 'pain' of i-movie 8, what's the view on the export quality in 9?
Does it export high enough quality to look good when burnt to dvd and played back on tv?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It looks the same as iMovie 08.
I did a compare one day using the same clip burned to DVD from iMovie 06 and from iMovie '08.
The iMovie 06 clip looked like it came from the DV camera directly and the iMovie 08 clip looked much worse. The difference is the single field processing used by iMovie 08/09 and the fact that it throws out every other horizontal line.
Because the two softwares handle the imported video differently - single field processing is how iMovie 08 / 09 handles the video, meaning that one of every two lines of the image is ignored. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.
If your primary workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie '06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and original quality. If you share your movie from iMovie '08 / 09, it gets re-rendered at 640x480 or less, and then iDVD upscales it back to 720x480. The end result is obviously not as good.

  • Poor export quality Aperture 3

I've been searching all over the internet and can't seem to find any answers in regards to export quality in Aperture 3. When I finish editing an image and I export it in either TIFF, JPEG or PNG all of them look the same regardless of if I change DPI, File size etc and none of them look even close to as detailed as the original. I'm exporting "version" and changing the options in presets with no luck.
Can someone help me? I can't accept the poor quality of the exported images as they make my portraits look fuzzy and not sharp (when they're very sharp and vivid in Aperture!). Is it possible to get the same quality in an exported image as I see in Aperture. It seems like it should be a no brainer!
    Thank you!

I had the same problem. While in a One-to One the Creative told me to do this. What ever you are planning to export the file/files to have pluged in (flash drive, hard drive) or loaded (DVD/CD) before you start the process.
Chose the file or files by highlighting them then choose File - Export - Version. In the center of the window that will pop up there is a "Export Preset"" tab. He told me to choose TIFF- Original Size (8-bit). He did say that any higher than 8 bit is pointless. I did this and it worked great. I had a large beautiful file that I was blowing up to 30 by 20 and it looked so bad printed before I learned this trick. I printed it again after exporting the new way and it really looked great!
I hope this solves your problem, it was VERY frustrating for me also.

  • Exporting photos from Lightroom in their original format

    Hi all,
My Lightroom library contains photos from multiple photographers. What I'd like to do is select all of a particular photographer's photos by choosing 'Creator' from the metadata browser and export the selection to a single folder. However, Lightroom's export options force me to chose from JPEG, DNG, TIFF or PSD formats. Most of them are JPEGs already; I don't want to recompress them again (or save them in an uncompressed format, which would be pointless). I just want to make a copy of the files as they exist in the library, without modifying them. Does anyone know if this can be done, and if so, how?
    Cheers,
    Nick

So far as dragging the file "out of" the Lightroom content area I think you'll find that it works the same way as Bridge (i.e. the sidecar does not travel with the original file). In the Bridge you need to use the Move To or Copy feature if you want the XMP sidecar to travel.
So... In Lightroom, how is it properly done then?
I shoot RAW only, and I have found occasion where I would like to collect a copy of the RAW files to give to someone else for editing. While I might be able to use the Windows Explorer, what am I supposed to do if the images reside in different directories? I can't export them because Lightroom doesn't let me export a RAW copy (in other words, I can't export a CR2 file and end up with a CR2 file outside of Lightroom), and I can't drag and drop them because 1: this doesn't work on Windows, and 2: the sidecars don't copy with the RAW files.
Thanks for the tips and info.

  • Export quality in After Effects

I'm using After Effects CS4 and have exported as an MPEG-4.  The quality of the final movie is very poor.  It looks like a low quality JPEG.  In After Effects preview, it looks fine.
I'm familiar with exporting quality videos out of Premiere.  Is the usual workflow to open AE projects in Premiere and use the options there to export?  Or am I missing something in AE?

That may be, but I'm just not a fan.  I did some tests a few years ago and decided that Animation
wasn't worth it and that it was in fact creating artifacts in my renders.
Just to show my work, I am pulling some info from wikipedia as a reference:
"For complex 3D rendered scenes or digitized film of real-world footage, it barely compresses at all and also can add visible noise."
Now I know, wikipedia isn't highly reliable, anyone can edit it, blah blah blah, but this statement runs congruent to my own findings.  Add to that the weighty file size, and then the fact that this codec is officially my ENEMY because my students, who are instructed to use Sorenson 3, often forget to change the codec for their .mov renders, and so sometimes I get these bloated files that I have to trash and they have to re-render, and I just don't really care for this codec at all.
I just don't render video any more.  Haven't for a long time now.  So many advantages to using img sequences, I haven't looked back to big bloated video files.
