Export quality (THE most popular newbie issue in this forum?)

Here it is (again)
1.) I'm starting with the "DV NTSC 48kHz" Sequence Preset
2.) Importing a clip: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC 720x480
3.) Exporting: Quick Time Movie, Self-Contained, Current Settings.
4.) Resulting QT movie looks softer than original footage
-Why? Is footage getting re-compressed or something?
-Should I always export using Uncompressed 10-bit?
-I am only using a computer monitor. Would the quality loss be visible on an NTSC monitor as well?
What's the definitive answer?
thanks.
G5 2.0Ghz dual   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

4.) Resulting QT movie looks softer than original footage.<<</div>
Probably because you're viewing it on a computer monitor and the default QT quality setting for the file hasn't been reset to "High." With the file open in QT, hit 'command j' to bring up the movie's properties. Choose Video Track and then Quality to reset it. There's a drag-n-drop freeware script to perform this for you: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14255
-Why? Is footage getting re-compressed or something?-<<</div>
Not unless you checked the box to re-compressed all frames when you exported.
-I am only using a computer monitor. Would the quality loss be visible on an NTSC monitor as well?<<</div>
No.

  • How many Mac Mini's sold? and what has been the most popular Mac?

How many Mac Mini's sold? and what has been the most popular Mac? Curious, Bill

If you visit Apple's PR Library, you can find the quarterly sales results posted. Each one has a PDF you can download that includes a summary of Macs sold. The most recent one, from April 19, 2006, includes a PDF ("Data Summary" at the top of the press release) that only breaks down the Macs sold into "desktop" and "portable" computers. There's no way to distinguish between iMacs, G5 towers, Xserves and Mac minis in the desktop category. Older press releases like that (for example, the April, 2005 release) break down the desktops into iMacs and PowerMacs, but the iMac group includes the Mac minis and eMacs so it's still not possible to figure out exactly how many Mac minis were sold.
So, unless Apple releases the numbers separately, I'm not sure it's possible to answer your question.

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

  • Some of the most annoying SJC issues:

As I promised I will post some bugs I found. Will start from the most annoying for me:
    1. Visual designer does not show JSPF fragment components inside GridPanel or GroupPanel. This is just a terrible issue.
    2. CSS cannot be be assigned to JSPF during design time. I understand that JSPFs use CSS of the container page in run time but how am I going to design JSPF without CSS? Do I have to always go to the container page and preview how JSPF really looks? Sometimes when I get back from the container to JSPF it retains the styling but after refresh it gets absolutely styless again.
    3. If I am binding the "Rendered" property of a component (such as grid panel), it disappears from the visual designer (after you click refresh) and will never reappear until you unbind it.

    (1) VIsual designer does not show JSPF fragment inside GridPanel or GroupPanel: The reason this happens is that GridPanel and GroupPanel are JSF components which encode their own children; you can't put plan markup as direct children of these components (you can't do that for data table either). And a page fragment is going to be an HTML fragment; usually a <div> (look at the JSP source of your fragment). We should try to handle this better; at a minimum preventing the drop (since it doesn't work) but better yet try to fix it if we can. An< f:verbatim> here isn't what you want (this is how you can usually embed html in encoding-children components) because you don't want the JSF children of your html tag inserted verbatim. Somebody in support, can you file an issue to track this one please?
    (2) CSS in fragments: That's a reasonable request. The reason it's not shown there is as you suspected; fragments don't have their own stylesheets (stylesheets can only be added to html documents in the <head> section, and fragments are portions of <body>.)
Also, in addition to not knowing which stylesheets are in pages that might include the fragments, we also don't know the context; when you see a fragment included in another page it doesn't just pick up styles from the stylesheets but from the context too (for example, a font-size: 48pt setting on a containing element will inherit right into the fragment). Thus, the fragment needs to know the exact element context it should use too.
If there are multiple pages including the fragment, they might use the same stylesheet if we're lucky, but the fragments will almost certainly have different style element contexts.
As you've noticed, the fragments already show the styling of the last page they were rendered as part of. This is a side effect of model sharing, and it's a bug I didn't think important to fix since it's sometimes nice ;-)
However, I can see the argument that in some cases, especially if a fragment is included by only pages with the same stylesheet, it would be nice to apply those styles in the fragments too, even if it won't correctly include other style contexts from the pages. That's a reasonable request.
    (3) Rendered value binding: I agree, we should special case this to make sure rendered is considered true at designtime. I've gotta investigate how that works with some layout components though (like card layout) which I think relies on this (hiding all but one at design time)).

  • This is my first post. I would like to thank you all for all of the information you have posted on this forum. It has been most helpful to a Newbee. I have a MBP17 w/trackpad and click bar from '08. I need a bigger HD, how big can I go? THX

This is my first post, but I have been following this forum for a while and you have all been very helpful in my MacEducation. I have a MBP17 10.6.8 w/6GB ram from '08. I need to upgrade my HD from 200GB. I would like to go as big as I can and would appreciate any experiance you've had. Could I go 750GB or 500 GB @ 7200 rpm.  Should I upgrade to Lion before I swap the drive out?  Thanks, Johnny

    Hi Johnny,
Yes you can do the 750 or 500, 5400 or 7200. Just make sure it is 2.5" SATA and 12.5mm high or less (there is at least one HD out there that is 15mm high and will not work).
Lion: I don't know that it matters much either way, just don't do them at the same time. That way, if there are issues, you have a much better chance of troubleshooting one major change instead of two.

  • The ever popular newbie EQ issue

Hi all... as an experienced musician who's been dabbling in the DAW world for about a year I thought I'd share my EQ learning experience with my fellow newbies (pros, feel free to laugh! I can take it.)
Anyway, I spent many months rendering my brilliant noodlings into absolute mud through complete lack of knowledge of what all them knobs and waves meant But now I;m now getting tracks that to my ears (and people other than my mom) sounds pretty good -- sounds the way I want it -- and getting mixes that sound fairly clear, at least not totally chaotic and muddy.
As Bee Jay pointed out earlier, there is no "right" set of EQ settings that will work for every song (unless you can afford the Awesomizer!). But there's general frequency bands in which instruments (and I'm thinking of basic rock and roll instrumentation, eg Zeppelin, Sabbath, loud English-American blues) live the best, those are the bands where to begin EQing the signal.
"The Mixing Engineer's Handbook" breaks out this info pretty well, I think. It also includes helpful interviews with a lot of well-known pros, and describes how they build their mixes. The book also describes places to cut and boost for each instrument that tend to have worked in the past -- and explains why those tried and true methods work. it helps one understand why the Logic presets are the way they are. I'll use those bands as a starting point, then tweak from there, depending on the composition.
As for doing the actual EQing, I can't praise PSP Audio's MasterQ highly enough. It's a parametric EQ with a great interface (knobs for freg/Q/gain) and a nice big graphical display. What I will do, when EQing kick/snare/bass is have each channel's MasterQ instance simultaneously on my screen to ensure they're not crowding each other out. (Also highly recommend PSP's MixPressor and Vintage Warmer, and their Neon Linear Phase EQ!)
So it's not totally mysterious... you just have to arm yourself with a bit of theory and get a EQ that functions and communicates in a way that's good for you. And futzing around, a lot.

I find the best tool in this respect is the analyser, plus your ears of course.

  • Why are the most popular online games still written in Flash?

    Hi all,
I am not a Java expert, but I notice that at http://www.miniclip.com and similar sites, most of the popular games are written in Flash. Why is this? Is it because of Flash's IDE? Or is there some other reason?
If it is an IDE issue: Is there any Java IDE that makes basic Java game development as easy as basic Flash game development (drag-and-drop simple)?
    Regards,
    Jason

popular doesnt mean quality. flash games generally suck IMO
not to mention flash is easy as hell. any 14 year old with Limewire can manage to make half-decent flash movies with very basic ActionScript.
even a few pro-made Flash games suck.. you can only do so much with vector-based graphics >_> (and let's not forget how SLOOOW the Flash interpreter is..)
java requires actual programming knowledge - far beyond ActionScript's syntax. thus there are less people willing to put forth the effort really.

  • What is the most popular Video format for pc's and Mac's to just play

I made a video that had some shots in HD using my Canon HG10 and some shot were regular NTSC. I made a final quicktime output, and gave it to my client. It plays the sound but not the video. So I condensed the video to a smaller format NTSC w/ 16:9 aspect ratio, and no she says the quality is almost not playable. Everything plays and works fine, even the same files that I give to her. She also wants to be able to play the video in loops. What is the best program for a PC to do that?
    Thank you

Try exporting in Uncompressed 8 bit or Animation. Also save the file in the Quicktime Player to play in High Quality. If you export in NTSC/DV, quicktime will play a low quality version by default. Go to Window > Show Movie Properties > Video Track > Visual Settings, and check the High Quality checkbox and save the file.
I wouldn't recommend H.264. It's a lossy codec for mobile devices and the web.

  • I just loaded a new FF version. I lost all my customization. It used to open with the most popular 9 sites visited in the middle of the screen. How to get back?

Everytime this happens, I loose all my customization and spend HOURS trying to get it back.
Most important is the 9 most active pages showing on the screen. I've just spent two hours looking for how to get that back and can't find it.

YOur data maybe gone, unless you did a backup of your phone, which doesn't sound like you did.

  • What is the most popular reason for importing XML?

    Hi
New to this feature, so I would like to know what people are using it for. Presumably the XML is exported from another application. I need to get some idea of which applications people are generally exporting from, and why. Brief examples of workflows would be appreciated.
    Many Thanks
    Jason

All databases support today export to XML.
For InDesign the items have to be transformed in a special order.
Upon import InDesign can attach a XML element to a specific style or element in the document.
This helps to import a huge amount of informative content in formatted styles. Such methods are used for example for exhibition guides where information comes often very late, but the structure is foreknown or for special medicine the package will be produced automatically upon the content.
XML makes sense when the structure is given but the content may vary. Think about it with catalogues, receipts, phone and address books or similar. Less for literature.
Other methods to get the same result might be InDesign tagged text, which could also be exported from data bases.
Or if someone is exporting IDML it is a package of XML files bundled together, zip compressed with the extension IDML. Here you can research a little bit how XML works with InDesign.
