Export Quicktime from Final Cut but that Quicktime file won't play on my PC

So, I filmed a video in HD with my Sony camera at school, edited it using their Final Cut software, and exported it to the default Quicktime file (same one that can be imported into iDVD). I burned that Quicktime file to a data dvd (not DVD-video) and brought it home to my PC. I expected Quicktime to be able to play the file no problem because I have played many QT HD files before, but it will not work.
I downloaded the EVO QuickTime Component and DirectShow Plugin for Windows because I read that was a crucial codec, but that did not change anything.
Please help! I am running Windows XP Pro with all the latest updates, and the latest version of Quicktime. Thanks.

The default format that FCP uses is DV, which many PCs have trouble with. Try exporting with the "Using Quicktime Conversion" button, and select "Quicktime Movie". Or, if all you need to do is watch it (because the quality of AVIs is not great), export to AVI.
I won't say "what are you doing with a PC?!", becuase that would be a silly question (I assume you have a reason).

  • How to up the DPI on exported images from Final Cut

Is there a way to export stills from Final Cut that are 300 DPI, I think they are exporting at 72 DPI?
    Catherine

DPI is a measure of density of pixels. It tells us nothing about the printed size of the image (width in inches x height in inches)
    A 1200 x 900 image @ 300 dpi yields a 4" x 3" image when printed.
That same size (in pixels) image printed at 100 dpi will yield a 12" x 9" print.
The number of picture elements (pixels) is exactly the same between the two prints but the one in 100dpi image are 3x larger - which will yield a softer image when viewed from the same distance as the 4"x3" 300dpi image.
However, if you view the 300dpi 4"x3" print from 2' away and view the 100dpi 12"x9" print from 6' away - they will appear the same.
Discussions of finding meaning in DPI is difficult without knowing how the final will be viewed.
fwiw - I've made poster size prints at 75 dpi that looked just fine when viewed from 10-12'.

  • How to export videos from Final cut?

I woud'l like to know what is the best way to export a video of 34min from Final Cut? after I'm gonna burn at Toast! and in Toast should I chose "dvd" or "video_TS"?
I tryed already export with "sequence quicktime" and DV PAL 48 kHz and burn with "DVD", but didn't work.
And export with "via le compression quicktime" in sequence quicktime, burn with "DVD and DivX" and didn't work too!
    Can somebody help me?
    thanks a lot

my sequence is in Final Cut yet. The problem is, is an art work and every time I have to show somewhere, is diferents DVD players, so I tryed to play the one (exported by quicktime) in a dvd player quite old and actually worked but very bad, with errors! So, I trying to find a way more universal!! that I can play anywhere! Should I export by "compresseur" and Mpeg2 something like this, or "compresseur quitktime" and .avi??

  • 16:9 Export trick from Final Cut Pro to iDVD

If this is posted, I have not seen it. I have spent years trying to get a decent photo quality video on my widescreen tv without peoples faces looking like 4 pixel blocks. I think I have found a pretty decent result.
This is for Photo Slide shows only. (If you are going to mix widescreen video with photos, you must have the video in the timeline before you change the sequence to Anamorphic.)
Create my widescreen project in Final Cut Pro
(Photos have already been custom cropped (16x9) and reduced to 960 px in height before importing. iPhoto does this easily)
Sequence settings in FCP: Use the default settings just check anamorphic. Also, best compressor for photos seems to be DVCPRO.
When project is ready to export, Export to Quicktime Movie
Setting: Custom (the Sequence Editor pops up)
In the Aspect Ratio drop menu select "HDTV 720p (16:9) This will change the aspect ratio to 1280x720. All other settings should match your sequence settings.
    Export
Open the movie in QT Pro. Select the Video Track in the Movie Properties
    Check Preserve Aspect Ratio
Change the Height to 480 (the width should automatically change to 853)
Close the movie and save changes.
(This step really does make photos clearer)
iDVD will read this as widescreen and create descent non pixelated SD quality on your Widescreen TV.
If you have a better way to do this, or can get better quality than this achieves, I would be interested to know.

    Hey Mish.
I use 960 px because it is double the minimum 480. That allows me to use zoom animation or crop further without losing quality. I guess I would not have to go as high as 960 but its a number easy to remember.
As for your questions about my methods. I am one of those Final Cut Users that really does not understand how things work. I am just good at using it to create my movies. So what you say is Greek to me. Also, for some reason, I do not have Compressor application that so many people talk about in the forums. I just got so fed up with the crappy result I got with just exporting with the same settings as the sequence. The result was pitiful. If you think of a better result using different sequence or export settings, I'll try it.
I do a Highlights DVD project once a year. It's about 2 hours long (photos and video) and this method has given me the best ever result. It's my last year doing it so I don't want to invest in any software. My buddy would also tell me to use DVDSP and I've used it a couple of times but there is so much to it that I always forget what to do. So I have to "play nice" with iDVD

  • Exporting video from Final Cut Express to be put on the internet

Is there a way to export a flash file from Final Cut Express? I have a short video I am trying to put on my web site and I am finding that every format I try people who are using PC's are having trouble opening it. It all links back to Quicktime. Is there a way to not use Quicktime?

It doesn't come with FCE. You need a Flash encoder. There are different ones of varying quality. Flash of course comes with one. Episode has Flash as an add-on. Do a google search for Flash encoders. Many encoders, after they're installed, will work directly from within FCE using the QuickTime Conversion function. There'll be a format option for Flash.

  • Exporting movie from final cut express4 direct to apple tv

How can I export my completed movie from final cut express 4 to apple tv? This will be my first attempt. I have looked at the forum but cannot find a solution. I am fairly new to computing, (oap)!

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
The easiest method would be to export using Quicktime conversion and select the 'movie to Apple tv' option from the resultant dialogue box.

  • Exporting HDV from Final Cut Express

I'm trying to export a video as an mpeg-2 from Final Cut Express and burn it onto a CD-ROM for use on a PC with Adobe Premier. Could anyone help on the best way to do so?

There is no MPEG-2 export from FCE unless you have a third party encoder. You might try googling it. There are some expensive ones. Why does it have to be MPEG-2 BTW? Wouldn't QuickTime be better? It's fully support by Premiere on both platforms.

  • What file type to export vid from final cut to studio pro

Beginner here, the question I have is what is the best file format to export from final cut to studio pro so that I will play in a decent to good quality on a DVD that I make in studio pro. Thanks.

For my FCS projects, I export DV_NTSC "anamorphic" (I use 16:9 format) to a "reference" movie: that is quite fast after all rendering is completed and the resulting file is pretty small. The only disadvantage to "reference" I've found is that you must keep all those FCS file around since those are what is referenced by the export.
I export like that instead of exporting to compressor because for me, exporting directly to compressor is very slow; on my G5 Quad, my compression step is about 1:1 with real time.
You can take those .mov files into DVDSP and let it do the compression using your defaults. I prefer to use Compressor directly so I can set the compression, Dolby, etc. parameters. Compress to mpeg2 and AC3 (Dolby Digital) and if you are just in stereo, just keep it in stereo, check the "no surround encoding" and make sure the highest audio level in either channel is -3db (or the compressor setting let you reduce the level by 3db). That prevents a downmix to mono (like on a cheap TV) from clipping (-3db + -3db = 0db. (zero plus zero = +3db and is clipping).

  • I try to burn a dvd directly from final cut but it keeps failing.  Do I need a specific program?

I am new to Final Cut pro X.  I used to burn dvd's from dvd studio pro however it's not looking like that is a option.  Everytime I try to burn it directily from final cut it gives me a "failed" message.  Is there a dvd burning prgram I should be using?
    Thank you

I've had some issues with burning, too.  It could be an issue with the brand of disc you are trying to burn.  I was trying to burn DVD+R DL discs from Microboards, but they failed every time.  Once I tried the TDK brand, it worked just fine.  This could be an issue with any disc format, not just DVD+R DL.  Most people seem to have the best luck with Verbatim (which is what I usually use).
I would troubleshoot in this order:
Trash your preferences, empty trash and retry (Digital Rebellion's program is very straightforward for this)
    Run Disk Utility and retry
Shut Down for 10-15 minutes to allow the internal components to reset themselves, reboot and retry
Try with different brand of media
Uninstall the program and reinstall a fresh version
Most problems get resolved by step 3 or 4.
    Good luck!
