Export sharpening with JPEG's any different in 1.1?

I'm considering making the jump to Aperture and was wondering if one particular issue has been considered in the 1.1 update - JPEG export over-sharpening. Can anyone shed some light on whether Apple turned down the sharpening or if there is a way to control it on export now?
Thanks.
Anthony

I’m very disappointed to report that I see NO
improvement on JPEG export of RAW files in the1.1
version of Aperture.
I am still getting very pixilated jpeg images after
export from RAW, they are garbage and unusable. I
have changed my export setting presets to use the
highest quality (12) and exported at 100%, and turned
off all sharpening and noise reduction. Still the
exported JPEG’s look terrible. I’m using a Canon 5D
and working with ISO 100 files that are well exposed
and in perfect focus.
These pictures are not even worthy of emailing.
Does anyone have any suggestions or work-arounds they
have found? Is anyone getting good RAW exports to
JPEG?
OK, I think I was totally off base and owe Aperture an apology. I was posting one of the effected images to SmugMug when I noticed the photo looked fine in SmugMug, even at original size. This is the same photo that was very pixilated on my Macs monitor. I then emailed the same picture and looked at it on another computer, and again there was no problem with the photo. After checking a few other things it appears that the application Preview is enlarging my photos beyond actual size when I select actual size from the view options. Since the image is being enlarged by Preview beyond the actual size it is causing the pixilated problem. I’m not sure what’s causing this but every jpeg I open with Preview behaves the same way. I’m using a Quad G5 and a 30 inch Cinema Display.
Has anyone else experienced this issue? I just moved over to the Mac a few months ago so please excuse me if there is something obvious that I’m unaware of with this issue.
I am sorry for the false alarm.

  • How to export rating with jpeg?

    I would like to export my version as jpegs, with EXIF and IPTC data. No problem. I would also like the ratings to be exported with the picture. Maybe it is, but I cannot find it. Any idea if the rating is exported, and if it is, where?
    Thanks,

    Allan, if you are exporting the jpegs using the Mail Export Presets make sure that the preferences are set correctly. Open Aperture's preferences, Command + , (comma) and select Edit Mail Export Presets and check Include Metadata.
    Use the Query HUD to place the metadata you want baked into the image file. Command f
    Click the plus sign at the upper right and choose Rating and set the ratings you want.

    Thanks, Flex harUI, for the direction in regards to isolating build changes. That aside (still working on it), can you offer any direction in regards to my original question on SDK and AIR compatibility? I'm specifically looking for a version compatibility mapping or anything that definitively states, "Flex SDK x.y.z works with the following versions of AIR". This information is crucial for us in order to more specifically plan our own roadmap built upon these two frameworks as we consider both existing installations of our software and future distributions.

  • Is any different between ECC 5.0 and ECC 6.0 for Excel export?

    Dear all,
    As you know, most standard SAP report allow Excel export. I just wonder is any different between ECC 5.0 and ECC 6.0 for excel report in standard SAP reports?
    In ECC 5.0, Reports in profit center accounting, LIS, or PA, etc. has their own different way to export to excel and is any improvement in ECC 6.0? I Thanks.

    In ECC 5.0, a lot of reports don't have Excel export function instead user has to go to system -> List -> Save -> Local file -> spreadsheet.
    I just wonder is any improvement in ECC 6.0? just like LIS report, user can select export -> Transfer XXL to either pivot table or just plain excel but the function only exist in certain reports in some modules and not all.
    Thanks again.

  • Sharpening upon jpeg export

    I'm surprised that Aperture does not allow sharpening of jpeg output. Sharpening the master before reduction is not the same. All experienced image makers know that sharpening needs to be applied after resizing. I don't want to sharpen my master. I always sharpen for output (I've always used photoshop). How could Apple leave this feature out?

    My understanding was that nothing actually happened to the files ("nondestructive") until they were exported...at which time the adjustments were applied. You were simply seeing a preview of the adjustments.
    I'm not a programmer so I could be completely wrong and if so, I completely agree that the sharpening should be applied as the final step.

  • When I export a PNG file on illustrator, I get random empty space along with my exported object. Is there any way I can make just my object export and nothing more?

    This is an example of my problem. This icon is the sole object in this document, and is the only thing being exported here. Yet when I do export it, a random bar of white space is exported along with it. I am currently using Illustrator to design the art for a video game, meaning that this empty space plays havoc with my end product, and I have to meticulously crop anything I export. Since I do have to make hundreds of individual sprites for this, I would love to learn how to fix this problem and save myself a lot of time. So, what exactly am I doing wrong here, and how can I fix it?

    quicklite,
    I believe the resulting/final size may extend just a tiny bit above a whole point/pixel (value) on the pixel grid.
    You may see by Edit>Preferences>General>Use Preview Bounds (if needed), then select one of the top Reference Points in the Transform palette and look at the Y value measured in points/pixels.
    If that is the case, the solution would be to get rid of that tiny bit.

  • Demosaicing intro'd w/ LR3.2 Sharpening with 7D. Help requested.

    All,
    I hate pixel  peeping, but none the less it appears that there is demosaicing being  introduced in the new sharpening methods that I am not seeing in Canon  DPP or for that matter CS3 USM, or Smart Sharpen.  Images follow, and I  can supply the original RAW file if required.  If I am doing this  comparison incorrectly, I'm open to any comments and corrections.  All  images are 100% center crop of a 7D image.  No adjustments to exposure,  clarity, etc. ISO 200 image, Canon 7D, Canon 70-200 2.8 IS
    Image  One: No image sharpening applied out of LR - Note the area of the two  thin white sleeve stripes on player's left arm below patch - Smooth  going around front toward back
    Image Two: Above image but overcooked with USM - Same are still smooth
    Image Three: Original RAW file processed with Canon DPP and Sharpening pushed to almost max. - Still Smooth
    Image  Four:  RAW image processed in LR with Amt 40, Radius 0.8, Detail 25,  Masking 20 - Note the demosaicing (stairsteppng) in that area.  Also  appears in the folds about the patch
    Image Five: The above JPEG brought into CS3 with minimum Smart Sharpening applied - worsens condition (as expected)
    Image Six:  Image #4 brought into CS3 and minimal USM applied - worsens condition (as expected)
    As  I'm adding the images, I'm not sure the difference between the first  three images and the last three are as stark as they are on my 24" Dell  Ultrasharp, but I assure you they are there.  I've tried lower amounts  of sharpening out of LR, but the demosaicing is still created.
    Any thoughts, different ways to approach, etc., are appreciated.

    Could possibly be.  I'm going to have to go back and figure out why I can't quite get it represented here and repost.
    The usual trick is a 200% zoom - or more - crop, followed by a thorough lambasting for extreme, "what does that have to do with the Real World?" pixel-peeping!
    Keith, Dorin, (and all),
    Hopefully this shows what I was trying to illustrate.  200% on three images that are 100% crop of original.  I did a screen grab of my 24" 1920x1200 Dell Ultrasharp.  The lower right is converted JPEG from original RAW file in LR with no sharpening at all.  Top right is DPP pushed all the way to the right on sharpening, upper left is LR sharpening with the setting listed above the image.  Look at the area on the Jeter's left arm with the two white stripes under the patch, and the folds in the sleeve above the patch.
    The point I was trying to make is that LR sharpening is introducing the stair step pattern you see.  It isn't there with DPP (or very minimal) nor with the JPEG image not sharpened coming out of LR.

  • Anyone else having trouble opening CMYK PDFs from Photoshop CC with JPEG 'high' compression?

    (Cross-post from the Photoshop forum, where I was asked to post in the Acrobat forum: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5553829 )
    When I save a PDF file in Photoshop CC in CMYK color with JPEG compression (quality = high), it will save without any errors. However, when I open the file in Acrobat (11.0.3), I get an "Out of Memory" pop up error. I press Ok, and the document is just displayed as a blank white image.
    I'm using Win7 64-bit, Photoshop CC 64-bit. Plenty of memory (24GB) and allocated RAM in preferences, and I've done some troubleshooting that leads me to believe the error is not due to system memory, but rather a specific bug in the software. I have Photoshop CS6 on the same machine, and if I open the PSD, save as PDF with the above settings, everything is fine when I open it using Acrobat. This seems to just be for Photoshop CC, not CS6.
    Here is the troubleshooting I've done so far:
    PDF format, RGB color, any other settings --> Acrobat can open the file.
    PDF format, CMYK, no compression --> Acrobat can open the file.
    PDF format, CMYK, JPEG compression [medium] --> Acrobat can open the file.
    PDF format, CMYK, JPEG compression [high] --> Acrobat can NOT open the file because it encounters the "out of memory" error.
    PDF format, CMYK, JPEG compression [maximum] --> Acrobat can open the file.
    This is silly. I don't get it. Can anyone else confirm this problem for me?
    Updated:
    Like you said, there isn't enough information to rule out an issue with Photoshop CC, as the same action using Photoshop CS6 results in a usable file.
    New information (while making files for uploading):
    The error only occurs with CMYK files of larger dimensions. On a 500x500px image, Acrobat throws out "A drawing error has occured". a 2500x2500px image runs into the "Out of memory" error. In either case, Acrobat cannot successfully open the file generated by Photoshop CC, while it can if it was made using Photoshop CS6.

    The major changes for the others within the JPegs was the number of pixels (133X133) and the size (1.4inX1.4in). There is also a reduction in the number of colors.
    Just for information, I opened the big JPeg in Acrobat (9.5.5) and it opened fine. However, it looks like the color space was changed as shown below:
    Even if I change the input to use CMYK and not RGB, it looks like it gets converted to RGB. I haven't spent time to figure out the preflight analysis properly, but at least this may give you some info back.

  • Error "Failed to Export PDF" with big image on CS6 (32) and CC (64)

    Hi everyone,
    I'm on indesign CS6 (v8.0.2) and when I try to export pdf with a very big image ( *.tiff, 25000*35000 pixels, ) , the action failed with this message :" Failed to export a PDF".
    To be sure that there is no any corrupted elements, I made a very simple layout (one page , and just one element for my image,I turnoff prefilgth and all  ressource intensive options, and export with no downsampling or resampling) and try to export with different size image:with 20000*30000 -or smaller -image the export works, always failed with image .The export failed to in scripting mode.
    If I diveded my image in four , the export works but this solution is not convenient (I actually made tests for a fully automatised process, and we want to be sure that the indesign  component is  enough "safe")
    I try the same action with an evaluation version of indesign CC 64 bits (v9.2) and have the same behavior.
    I can imagine that there is a memory issue there, but my config seems to be strong ( windows server 64 with  16GB ram, DD with more than 100GB free). I don't undersant why-in a "full" 64 bit environnement- it is not possible to manipulate and export very large image ?
    I'm wonder If the background task is a part of the problem, and if it 's possible to disable it in CS6 or CC as in cs5 ( creates an  “DisableAsyncExports.txt” file in  Adobe InDesign executable directoty don't seems to disable it  in CC or CS6).
    Thank you for your help and good ideas..

    Rud.

    thanks for you through out help.
    I use the folowing code which executing properly,but there is no effect on JPEG whether the value of jpegparam.s.jpeg.embedICCProfile is 0 or 1.
    /////Start
    ASOptimizationSettings jpegparam;
    jpegparam.fileFormat = asffJPEG;
    jpegparam.s.jpeg.embedICCProfile = isICCProfileEmbeded;
    ASInt32 optID;
    optID = sAIOptSet->GetUniqueOptimizationSettingsID();
    error = sAIOptSet->SetOptimizationSettings(optID, &jpegparam); // after executing this line error = 0
    /////End
    I guess it would  work when we export document as jpeg through AIActionManagerSuite
    not with  rasterizing the layer's art and then exporting them as JPEG  using AsJPEG().
    thanks

  • A way to force XMP sidecar file use with JPEG files?

    I have a nice camera but it only saves in JPEG format. Once I rename the files and put my basic copyright info into the metadata, I like to mark them as read-only for safety. However, I want to be able to save the metadata that I enter in Lightroom 1.1 out to disk along with the files so that other programs can read it. I see that Lightroom will save in a separate XMP sidecar file if the photo is in one of those snobby RAW formats but not if it is in one of the low-life formats like JPEG. ;^)
    Is there any way at all to get Lightroom to use a sidecar file with JPEGs or do I have to just risk it and let it edit my JPEG files every time I do anything? I'm sorry, but my lowly JPEG files are just as important to me as a RAW file is to someone else. They are my photographs and I want to protect them.

    I'm not a pro so my backup routine is a little slip-shod. Sometimes I just grab a few files off the card, process them, and send the processed version out to whichever friend or relative is waiting impatiently for them.
    I guess, I am most concerned about:
    A) LR corrupting the working file and losing all the virtual edits. It is not easy for me to re-figure out what I did in the first place. Knowing about the safe-write technique helps.
    B) Backing up just the edits. If the virtual/non-destructive edits were stored in separate .XMP files then I could back up those files to the same media as the original files and have them both together for future recovery operations. As it is, I now have to back up the entire working copy of the file in order to back up the edits. This creates two different versions of the file on my backup media, which will be harder to keep track of. Besides, .XMP files are small enough, and I would only be creating them for my better photos, so I could squeeze them onto the original backup media if I saved a bit of room. If I have to back up the entire modified file then it is less convenient.
    C) When I write the metadata to the JPEG file, does it change the Windows modified date or creation date?

    FCPX XML not exporting audio with any project.
    I have tried with several different projects to no avail.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?
    Thanks

    I used no special setting. I even tried to just export audio. Still no audio. I checked the file with GSpot, it shows that it has audio.
    Then I though I just went ahead an encode this and output to DVD as a test. It is indeed still no audio when playback on home dvd player.
