Export to Apple TV problem

I've searched for several days on these forums, but i am unable to come up with a good solution to this?
I have a Nikon d300s that I record video with (mjpeg at 720p 24fps) and I convert the files to AIC with Mpeg Streamclip then import them into FCE (ver 4.0.1). I want to make a few simple edits and then export the video to be played on my Apple TV. I would like the highest resolution possible with no loss of quality. When I use Export>Quicktime Conversion>AppleTV I get a movie that is 960 × 540 instead of the original 720p...A TV is supposed to support 720p at 24fps? If I try any custom settings, I always get an error when syncing with ATV (video not supported). This is driving me nuts...any thoughts?
Also curious..would FCP give me any better results (I don't see me spending that kind of money), but just wondering.

Have you tried using Handbrake to convert to AppleTV format? Take a look at this:

  • Exporting to Apple TV

I have imported my personal movie from my Sony MiniDV camcorder to iMoveHD. The total length of the movie is just 7:45 minutes. There is a new option in iMovieHD called Export to Apple TV. When I use the export option I have two issues:
First being, the export takes about 5 hours to complete on my iBook. This does seem very weird. It takes about the same time if I try to export using H.264 codec, terrible slow. If I use the DV codec it takes about 20 minutes.
Second issue, is after the export, when I play the movie in iTunes, the video does not maintain the aspect ratio. All people look fatter and shorter than the original movie. The height seems to have shrunk.
Can anyone let me know what I am doing wrong ?

Exporting from iMovie to a movie with the H.264 codec tends to be slow. Very slow. The time required depends on your processor. What you describe is probably normal. If your export succeeds, and it sounds like yours did, everything is okay. It's just going to take a while. (Apple TV is going to sell a lot of Macs, I suspect, for this and other reasons. But that would be speculating.)
Regarding the dimensions of the exported movie: yours is 720x480, I suspect. You probably exported from a "normal" iMovie DV project. That's the dimensions I get here from a DV project. (To learn more about the exported movie, drop it on the QuickTime Player icon in the Dock and open the Movie Info window.)
My guess is — and it's just a guess — Apple TV will handle what appear to be aspect ratio problems when the image appears on the TV. The "Apple TV" export format defaults to one of several dimensions, depending on the source material. (It's different for HDV iMovie projects and DV Wide projects than for DV.) It will work with your TV to make it look right.
Like the generic iPod export setting, the Apple TV setting offers only the "Default" setting. That's a clue, suggesting QuickTime knows what it has to do and it takes care of doing it. When the movie is intended for Apple TV, Apple probably doesn't want you messing with it.
The quality of the Apple TV imovie is so good it hurts, doesn't it?
Tip: If you don't want the Apple TV movie to open in iTunes, change the suffix of the exported movie from ".m4v" to "mov". (Either when you export it or later, in the Finder.) Now when you double-click on it, it opens in QuickTime Player.

  • Exporting iPhoto Slideshow Colour problems

When using the slideshow function in iPhoto 09 using the snapshot theme, it is causing issues with the colours on the Photos when exported.
On the exported slideshow, when a new photo appears on a snapshot it looks fine, then just before the next snapshot arrives on the screen the photo flickers, it is particularly bad if the colour red is present on the photo.
I may add that displaying the slideshow in iPhoto it is perfect with no flicker of colours, it's only when it is exported. Also it is being exported as the biggest size. I have tried many of the export function with iPhoto but to no avail, the flicker is there with all the export types.
Any help on this matter would be appreciated.
    K

I have the same problem, only with the Snapshot theme, as far as I can tell. Basically it's like it jumps the gun a bit and desaturates the photo too early for the duration of one frame, then goes back to full color, then completes the dissolve to black and white. The single frame "flicker" is from that one desaturated frame. I got the same results whether exporting to Apple Prores or H.264 at 1280x720. Like already noted, it plays just fine in iPhoto itself and only presents the problem once a movie is exported. I actually didn't initially notice the problem because it flickered in time with the music for the first couple of photos and I thought it was a feature!

  • FCE and Export for Apple TV

I want to be able to use FCE to edit my HD footage from my Sony HD7 camcorder then display results through Apple TV. I know I will lose resolution, but am having one particular problem. After importing clips to FCE I exported to Quicktime movie, then opened the file in Quicktime and exported to Apple TV. The resulting video seems "jerky" at least to my eyes. Almost like every other frame was cut out. Do I need to export from FCE at a different resolution or frame rate to get the export to Apple TV looking better?
    Thanks all for the help.

Thanks Tom. Could be just my eyes seeing the difference in the results, but here are the details.
    Original File from Sony HDR-HC7
    Video Tracks:
    Apple Intermediate Codec, 1440 x 1080, 29.97 fps, 98.77 Mbps
    Audio Tracks:
16-bit Big Endian stereo, 48 kHz, 1.54 Mbps
Export direct as QuickTime movie and conversion to Apple TV seems to show some jagged sharp motion to my eyes, so I tried the steps below and got a more fluid result.
The exported from FCE to 1280 x 720 with these settings:
    Compression: H.264
    Quality: High
    Key Frame Rate: 24
    Frame Rendering: Yes
    Encoding Mode” multi-pass
    Dimensions: 1280 x 720
Results of export from Final Cut
    H.264, 1280 x 720, 29.97 fps, 17.48 Mbps
16-bit Big Endian stereo, 48 kHz, 1.54 Mbps
Then converting that to Apple TV file (opened in QuickTime and used export for Apple TV):
    Video Tracks:
    H.264, 960 x 540, 29.97 fps, 3.81 Mbps
Could be that Export to QuickTime Movie makes an Apple Intermediate Codec file and the export using QT conversion made an H264 codec. Perhaps there is a difference in the way the QT function "export to Apple TV" handles those two codecs???

I'm trying to find out how to export my apple contacts to the Salesforce software and they need to be in a csv format and I don't know if this is possible and how to do it if it is?

I think there are third-party programs which will do that, but you can also do it with Automator:
See the links in my post, here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/22390873#22390873
The file or clipboard contents will be in Tab Separated vars, so you'll have to open with a spreadsheet program and save as Comma Separated Vars format.

You will have to do the update manually for the app store version. Instructions are here:

(that's for 6.6 but the steps/file paths are the same for 6.7)

  • How to report Apple a problem in software by e-mail?

How to report Apple a problem in software by e-mail?  For example I got a problem: new version of iTunes 11.1.1 is not running at all! (uninstalled old one first) When I try to launch itunes from my laptop desktop I get this box Win7 64. I don't want to open any system files, just wish that Apple will make a program which work. Apple please!
"The file itunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes" and it not run at all!!

    Hi Nick.
If you open a free Apple Developer account you can use the bug reporter tool. However if you want to file a bug report you need to tightly identify a reproducible fault, detail the conditions in which it arises and ideally supply any workaround you have discovered.
In other circumstances iTunes Feedback is probably the appropriate channel. Common problems should gain attention.
Apple don't provide free technical support for iTunes. The inital point of entry for online assistance is iTunes Support. If none of the online resources help then depending on the nature of the problem, or whether you qualify through a recent purchase, or you are prepared to pay, you may be able to make use of the Contact iTunes Support service. Failing that Apple Support Communities (here) is where users share solutions with each other.

This is a user-to-user support site not a place to reach techs. You can make a Genius Bar appointment at your nearest Apple Store and see if you can do an out-of-warranty replacement or you can use a 3rd party repair site.

  • Why "Export Error Codec Initialization Problem!" when I export using Adobe Media Encorder for FLV?

I get "Export Error - Codec Initialization Problem!" when I try to export a project using Adobe Media Encoder as a Macromeida Flash Video.  Premiere Pro 2.0 goes through the rendering process but no file is created; just the Export Error message.  What does this mean, and what do I need to do to export a project as a FLV file?
    Thanks.

Sounds weird...  You could try the standard fix for general unexplained behaviour in a document; export it to idml, open that, save as an Indesign file and try exporting again.  If that doesn't work try a few different presets, like smallest file size.  If that doesn't work try opening your image in Photoshop, resaving as a psd, placing that (delete your old one) and see if that helps.  Obviously do this on a copy....

I've tried and tried several times to Connect my device to my PC and follow the onscreen instructions in iTunes to download the update from Apple. Thank you, Ripley

I haven't updated yet. Apple's download servers have been too busy. Did you know you can update via wifi instead of connection to your computer?
Here's a description of the update. Not a lot of changes for iPad 1/2.

  • Virgin email via Apple Mail problem

Hi - The search facility is temporarily down on this site, so I thought I'd post this to see if others have the same problem or there's a solution.
I'm in the UK and Virgin Media are my provider. I have a primary POP email account with them and a number of aliases within that account. But just recently two of my accounts have 'gone down', i.e. they are greyed out on the left menu.
I can still send from the accounts, but cannot receive. I can also log onto web mail without any issues, but mail is simply not downloading to Mail on my desktop. If I delete an account and set it up from scratch, it's fine again... but the problem re-occurs after a week or so.
I have spoken to Virgin support a couple of times and on the last occasion they have said there is nothing obviously wrong at their server end and it must be an Apple Mail problem... most frustrating!
    Any clues anyone?

After a recommendation from support at Virgin, I had to close down the accounts and set them up again. Unfortunately they didn't warn me that I would lose all of my email!!!

  • Export for Apple TV with Date?

I have over 70 home movies dating back to 1952 in the latest version of Final Cut Studio that I want to export to Apple TV and I need the title and date (year) to be displayed. I cannot get the date to show up in Apple TV reliably.
I export from Final Cut Studio using Share and then Send to Compressor where I use a custom Apple TV setting which just exports in SD without any audio. The resulting m4v file is imported into iTunes and viewable with Apple TV. On Apple TV the title shows up for each movie but no date (release date?) is listed. Since these movies date back to 1952 I want to have the date displayed (I don't want to include it in the title text).
I have set the year in iTunes, can't find out how to set the date in Compressor, set the date with MetaX, Lostify, etc., but the date never shows up on Apple TV.
I have searched these forums and the internet but have not found a solution that works. Can anybody offer any suggestion on how to reliably set the date?

Hey Jeff, I realized that you've marked this thread Answered but, in case it matters, the issue with retagging files already imported into iTunes is a known issue (For whatever reason, the iTunes Library Database file doesn't update the metadata when a file is retagged externally.)
What many of us (iTunes nerds) do is delete the file from our iTunes library, retag externally, then Add to Library in iTunes.
That's the most foolproof way, though sometimes after retagging externally (and not having removed beforehand) a simple Get Info in iTunes does the trick. But that fails a lot for me personally.

  • Export to Apple TV straight from Final Cut (QTP/Compressor)

In preperation for my Apple TV, I needed to know how I can "export to apple TV" from Final Cut Pro. I can import my 1080i HDV footage (from a Sony HC7) into iMovie, go to share, Quicktime, Expert Setting and simply click "Export to Apple TV" (which is obviously built into Quicktime now. But when I have the same footage in FCP and go to "Export"...I can't find "to Apple Tv" ANYWHERE! Not in "quicktime movie", "quicktime conversion" or "using compressor". Am I missing something? We can we not export to Apple TV with in FCP?
I've posted this in the Quicktime, FCP & Compressor boards incase it's another issue.
    Thanks!

    yes....absoultely.
here is my response from my same QT thread:
i know. i have that (QT 7.1.5)...and QTP. in my original post...i said i can do this in iMovie very easily (i explained the process)...but when i try to export from FCP..."export to Apple TV" is not an option.
if you have FCP...you might want to try. i know in theory you think you would...but unless you have FCP...you won't know. can someone post a confirmation that has FCP so people on here don't think i'm loony.
and if you have FCP and can do this...please explain how.
    thanks!
