Export to camera crashes iMovie 06

We've been running 10.3.9 and iMovie 05 sucessfully for a while now, but after upgrading to 10.4.4, iMovie 06 and Quicktime 7 we started getting numberous problems with iMovie. I'm not sure if this is 100% iMovies fault or some combination of the upgrade. Specifically I'm seeing
1) iMovie crashes every time we try to export to a camera. Silently with no error message -- it just goes away.
2) When we plug new camcorders or A/D converters to the computer, we often have to reboot the whole computer to get iMovie to recognize that a camera is attached.
3) Slick Transitions v2-3 do not work in iMovie (other volumes do)
There are work arounds for #2 and #3, but not being able to export to the camera is a major problem. Has anyone else seen this? Is it definitely iMovie 06 (as opposed to the OS or Quicktime upgrade)?

I had your #1 problem when I was using iMovie 5. I solved it by downloading QuickTime from the Apple website and reinstalling it. Perhps that would work with iMovie 6?

  • Exporting from iMovie to my camera= crash??

    Hi,
I've got an iBook G4. Since i've upgrated it from 10.3.9 to 10.4.8, and bought iLife and upgrated everything, each time i try to export my video from iMovie to my Sony camera mini DV, the application quitt.it never happened before. And even when i just edit with iMovie, it crashes more often than before. What happens?

    thank you for the advice...
I found something very interesting, because apparently this problem exists with iMovie 3 and 4: when Final Cut Pro is installed, iMovie doesn't reconize the camera anymore when trying to export the video on a camera.... For me , Final Cut was arleady installed since a few months, but indeed, i've started to use it recently and it could be since that time that i have this problem...
The article says that the problem doesn't occure anymore with iMovie 5 and more.... Apparently not...
The only thing is, the solution they give to avoid the problem still doesn't work for me.... So, if someone has another suggestion??

  • IMovie exporting to camera

I am trying to export a movie back to my camera, the video exports fine but the audio does not follow. However if I playback the camera through the Imovie the audio is there. I assume there is some encoding that only Imovie can playback, how can I change these settings to have both audio and video play on my camera.

Unfortunately, the deafening silence you hear suggests no one has an easy answer, Larry.
Assuming the iMovie project is set to play its audio, both the audio and video should export to the camera without a problem.
On the other hand, If the audio is turned off in the checkbox at the right end of the Timeline, it won't be exported. But if your audio plays in iMovie that's probably not the problem.
However if I playback the camera through the Imovie the audio is there.
Are you saying that if you play the EXPORTED video back from the camera through iMovie the audio is there? If so, everything on the camera is fine.
I'd check the basics. Make sure the audio isn't muted in whatever method you use to test playback from the camera.
Perhaps the iMovie Preferences > Playback > "Play DV project video through to DV camera" is turned ON? When ON, that mutes iMovie's audio when playing the project. iMovie assumes the camera is connected to a TV providing the audio.
    Welcome to the forum!

  • Can I export a project from iMovie 11 to a camera?

Can I export a movie from imovie 11 to a camera?  If so, how do I do it?  Thank you!!!

iDVD is not avail via the MAS.
only in the boxed version of iLIfe (any version).
consider other tools, as Roxios Toast or the free Burn .
those are less integrated into iLife, less easy modifyable and for sure not as 'good looking' as iDVD.
in case you still own old installer-disks of any old Mac, consider a 'custom install' of iDVD/iLife from those (mostly on Disk #2).

  • New 27 iMAC keeps crashing iMovie and freezing videos on YouTube & Quicktime

We just got a new Sept 2013 iMac three days ago, purchased refurbished from the Apple Store online. The whole point of the purchase was to be able to use iMovie to thoroughly edit videos for our YouTube channel, use garage band, lots of internet surfing and video watching etc. We spent the extra dollars to get what we thought was the most improved version of the iMac with all the souped up specs in order to avoid any hassle and headaches from a lack of performance. Here's what we have:
    3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
27-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit display with IPS technology; 2560-by-1440 resolution
    8GB (two 4GB) of 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM
1TB hard drive (We have only used 80 GBs of it so far, so plenty of space left)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M graphics processor with 2GB of GDDR5 memory
    720p Camera & Mic
    OS X 10.9
We're feeling a bit duped now as this seems to have turned out to just be a big expensive piece of junk. Here are our problems:
    - Firstly, thank goodness that we had our own Logitech HD camera/mic left over from our PC because the "HD camera" built in to the iMac is worse in quality than my old blackberry curve. Grainy, lack luster, mic has sharp and distant sound, really really bad and false advertisement.
    - In the middle of using iMovie (iMac came preinstalled with the newest one, i think its 10?), it will stop responding properly or will crash and close, we wont even have any other programs running.
    - When opening Quicktime to record a new video, in the middle of a recording or while the recording window is idle, it will start glitching - flashing between live footage and a freeze frame repeatedly. The only way to stop it is to quit out Quicktime and open again and try to record quickly, or in some cases we have to completely restart the iMac, which then still randomly in the middle of a recording or idle window it will continue to flash and glitch. (You can view an example here in the last minute of one of our videos, we tried to make it work and kept the take since we were doing our outro music dance, but it totally ***** when this happens randomly during our content portion and we have to redo recording. http://youtu.be/MAJzaEShJGw?t=4m34s )
    - When watching YouTube videos, the computer takes a while to respond to a command, like if we click on a certain part of the video, it will not load it until we press the pause/play button a few times and wait. Also at the beginning of a video it will start glitching and freezing again, similar to how we explained above in the quicktime, but faster.
If you are familiar with what could be the problem or have any advice, PLEASE HELP, we are concerned that after dropping so much money within just 3 days of use, this iMac is not performing flawlessly in the areas that we most needed and want to know if these issues are common and fixable or if its a defect that would require we send this thing back immediately. We did not get apple care and would hate to have wasted money that we really dont have on a glitchy crashing huge piece of junk.
Want to mention a few other pros and cons unrelated to our issues, for those who may be considering buying one too:
    PROS:
    - The Magic mouse is really great, particularly because of the scrolling and zooming gestures. (Though sometimes i accidentaly swipe in a browser and go back to a previous page losing any information that was input on the page i was originally on, for example, i had to retype this whole apple imac inquiry because i swiped backwards by mistake and the whole form cleared! annoying, wish the horizontal swipe navigated between tabs instead of going through the page view history.)
    - When the imovie is not crashing, after watching some tutorials and making a few vids, its a really greatly improved program from the '09 version we used to use. I import and edit videos much faster now, and footage does not freeze or take time to load while im dragging and dropping, it is immediately responsive.
    - Love using the Talk to text function (like Siri) by pressing "fn" twice. Use this to write long emails and papers with ease. Would like to see a "Speak" read back option that allows for text to be selected and read back (like Siri on iPad)
    CONS:
    - The text is SO small everywhere and there is no option to exactly set text size across the whole system, only option given is to set a different resolution which lessens the quality of the screen with pixelation, and some programs give you the option to set custom sized text in their individual preferences.
    - Sometimes in both iMovie & Garageband, simple automated functionality will stop working, for example in iMove, when certain screens or images are dragged and dropped to the work area by the activity bar (i dont know what else to call it, the line that rolls across during playback or stays put when pressing spacebar) usually, that screen or image will click into place to align with the activity bar and will highlight the bar yellow to further communicate that alignment before you drop it, but after extended use in a session, that snapping into alignment when adding items stops working. Or sometimes you can drag and drop the ends of a title screen to adjust/trim the clip, but after extended time that too stops responding and does not let the cursor turn into that arrow that allows you to trim or extend, until after many frustrated clicks or a quit and restart.
    - When sharing/exporting a video from iMovie, i would recommend unchecking the add to theatre option because it significantly extends the amount of time needed to complete the action and i found out the theatre is just like a video stream of your movies to be shared on icloud for easy access from your other devices (similar to the icloud photostream connected to iPhoto). It takes the time to make the video readily availabe in various sizes on the Mac server for easy access, which means it takes forever for your video to be exported to where you actually want it. This is not something we need and is not worth the wait time. (For example, last ime we left the theatre box checked, the progress status of the video was estimated to be completed in 351 minutes, and then 20 minutes later that somehow inclreased to 385 minutes, then duddenly it was done, so i think this add to theatre option also cause the progress status updates to go berzerk.)

Given the maximum RAM that model can use is 32GB, and the earlier release of that 27" mid-2013 iMac is nearly the same in most regards, you may note the listing of this slightly older iMac 27" is here in an Apple support document...
•iMac: How to remove or install memory:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423#1
The images of where the RAM chips are located, behind a metal plate, should be similar in your iMac and the mid-2013 iMac 27" shown in images on that page. Note there are several models discussed.
You could take the computer to a certified Apple service facility (retail store, or specialist reseller) and pay them to do this, and buy the RAM from them, and you will pay for this at a retail level. If they do it, you'd want to be assured the computer did all the things you sought to cure by upgrading RAM, correctly without fault. Like run tests and stuff.... Or there's no reason to not go ahead (after confirming from Apple) that you could buy quality RAM and do this job yourself, citing the Apple page link I'd posted above.
    Contact Apple Support:
    http://www.apple.com/support/contact/
You'd have to obtain the correct RAM (as indicated in my earlier post, citing MacTracker) of suitable quality for use in a Macintosh computer, and the recommendation for a DIY is to get the kit from 'Other World Computing' OWC online at their site. You can talk to knowledgable sales staff at OWC about what you have and what you need, and to help they may ask for the product serial number.
This is OWC and they have the spec RAM required for your iMac 27" model; double-check info:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/2012_27/DDR3L
Since yours is an Apple Refurbished model it will have a different number series. Unlike those in a retail store, because Apple does that to tell what ones they refurbished; refurbs I bought online were like that.
With questions during the first three months, you can get 'support' under the initial 90-day span of ownership of the new (and certified) Apple refurbs bought online; the other part of that is 'service' for 1 year. Call a nearest retail Apple Store, to set a genius appointment; or go online, and start the process of reporting your issue, while you still have some kind of warranty on the device. They can diagnose the issues you cite and tell you if you can upgrade the RAM (as you likely can) then you can buy and install the RAM yourself and probably pay less than 1/2 the retail rate, if you get some from OWC. A diagnosis is free if the Genius looks into it, but you'd need to set an appointment & lug the iMac to their store; protected from weather/shock.
If you want to extend the complementary service to three years (less the included 90-days) and add two years of AppleCare service, that is an affordable option of about $170. For a total of three years coverage.
    {If you had a 21.5-inch iMac the RAM would require a service department visit where they use a different method to install the RAM upgrade. Those are built differently than the 27-inch iMac.}
There is a bit of detailed important information in the Apple link on how to upgrade the iMac RAM. There is a certain amount of RAM installed already and these chips would likely be removed if you get matching sets of new RAM to upgrade the capacity. And no matter what some say, there is a reason why they can be upgraded with more. Even with Mavericks OS X 10.9.x and its 'memory compression' etc, it would gladly accept all the RAM upgrade chips it could swallow. (Behind metal screen, mid-bottom iMac 27")
You may need to consider questions about applications that use system resources separate from those about whatever issues your iMac seems to exhibit. There may be some other cause of the video and iMovie symptoms, but more RAM won't hurt given the beast you bought can use 32GB and it has 8.
And if it seems too much to handle, you have 14 days from date of
purchase to take it back. Contact them ahead of then, if you do.
    Hopefully this helps.
    Good luck & happy computing!

    Hello Tshown,
can you import from camera into iMovie?
    here are some possible solutions
    1. delete preferences (com.apple.iMovie.plist) and empty the trash
    2. repair disc permissions with Disc Utility
    3. use Diskwarrior or MacJanitor for disc clean-up
    4. empty cache (CacheoutX)
    5. disconnect any other firewire devices
    hope this helps

  • Exporting HD video From iMovie to play on PS3

    Hello,
I hope someone out there can help. I've been trying to export an 8 minute iMovie project from my MacBook Pro so that I can stream or play it one my PS3 in HD. I've been trying to find just the right setting so that the video file will not be enormous and more importantly play on my PS3. When converted to avi I found the file size was huge. I also found that my PS3 was not able to play a .mov.
The video was shot using a Sanyo HD2000 which is 1080i. I have the camera settings at 60 frames. Should the video export also be the same? I am trying to avoid compressing the video. The footage imports quick as can be and looks great. Can anyone out there suggest settings that I might be able to use to maintain the HD picture quality?

  • Creating a QuickTime movie with the new Canon T5i  camera in iMovie 9.0.9.

Help needed creating a QuickTime movie with the new Canon T5i  camera in iMovie 9.0.9.  The project is done and looks good...I need help understanding what settings need to be set so I can make a QuickTime movie in the highest quality that would fit the ratio of 16.9 to be sent out to my YouTube page.  I played around with some of the settings and have not come with the right setting for the video.  I want the highest quality with the lowest amount of megabytes…thanks

I would suggest using SHARE/EXPORT MOVIE and choose 1920x1080 (if your source material supports this).
That should work well in YouTube.
If you want to go further with custom QuickTime settings,  here are some that should work, but in my experience, it will be no better than using SHARE/EXPORT MOVIE.
follow the instructions below to create a .mov video that will work on YouTube:
In iMovie, select Share > Export Using QuickTime
Next, you may want to check your Options to verify that the following settings are correct:Video settings
    Compression Type: H.264
    Frame Rate: 30 is preferred. 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97 are also acceptable.
    Data Rate: Automatic
    Key Frames: Automatic
    Frame Reordering: Unchecked
    Audio/Sound settings
    Format: AAC
Click Show advanced settings and choose Constant Bit Rate as encoding strategy

  • Getting audio only when exporting to camera

Hello. I have exported many times before but when I recently tried to export to camera, I get audio only. I tried deleting the iMovie Preference file (which I had to do at times in the past) and then I got some video with audio at the beginning but then the video stalled while the audio continued.
The iMovie material (which I have already exported to DVD) that I am trying to export to tape is from a DVD which I had converted to DV through Toast and edited in iMovie if that makes any difference.
I'm using iMovie 6.04. Any comments will be appreciated.

    Hi, Rich,
I just select QuickTime from the Share option in the menu bar, not Export from the File.
It gives the options of Full Quality, CD-ROM, Web streaming and Email and Expert Settings. I always leave it as Full Quality. I just tried it now and when I select 'Expert Settings,' nothing happens until I click on 'Share,' and then I see the options of how to export and what format to use. Selecting Movie to DV Stream, I then have to change from the 'Most Recent Settings' to get the options of either PAL or NTSC settings for 32, 44.1 or 48 kHz...those are sound settings for audio.
Frankly, I find it much harder to do all these setting changes when Share to QT as Full Quality has always produced a great movie that is equal in quality to the original iMovie.
I have been doing it this way since the first iMove came out. It has always been known as a loss-less method. Frequently, my iMovies are complicated with many video and audio clips. With earlier versions, whenever iMovies became complicated, the playback would skip, stutter or the audio would freeze or become distorted. I learned from experience that the burned disks and disk image files would be fine, but it was hard to finish the edits. I learned to edit the video clips, add the still photos, transitions and titles, add just some audios if I needed a few seconds of sound under the still photos, and then export the movie as the Full quality quick time movie. Then, take that qt movie into a new iMovie and then add the audio. Worked every time. The new qt movie always played fine......unless I got too many more clips, and then I just made a new qt movie at that point. I also always use the qt version for exporting back to miniDV tape because the stuttering version usually would not export, or if it did, the stuttering would persist and ruin it.
    Good luck with your projects!

Plse send off the bug report to Apple.

I have had the same experiences as everyone else on this fourm. Maybe that's why I never see a Apple Rep answer a question. I was working on a project all day and the application would just quit in the middle of me making an edit. I never had a chance to save my work when this happened.
It seems to me that over the past four years, apple has just deployed software without fully testing. I can't understand why they would use their paying customers as beta testers. The quality control aspect of Apple has gone away. You can't use iMovie on an iPod, but that's all they seem worried about these days. I am glad to see Adobe put out some good applications. Take Lightroom for example. This application was created to allow users to run the application on a Power Mac G4. What about that Apple?
I just wish Apple would own up to the problems it's cutomers are reportng and correct them or at least acknowledge them as being investigated. Wit would also seem reasonable for Apple to at least publish known issues.

  • Can't export to camera, yet computer sees camera

On attempting an export to cam, I get a message saying " imovie lost its connection to the video camera. Please check the connections and try again"
Previously I have been able to export my imovie projects to camera no problems.

Disonnected and unplugged power, and firewire cables.
    Tried Panasonic and Canon cams.
    Repaired permissions on HD.
    Tried exporting different project.
I can export just fine when I use my new imac with imovie HD.
But I need to get project out of old computer and it doesn't burn DVDs - size of project is around 1.5G

My saga so far: I bought a brand new Canopus ADVC110 Advanced Digital Video Converter for use with iMovie 3.0.3 on my Macintosh G4. I can't understand hardly A WORD of the instruction manual, but with detailed questions and careful coaching from the members of four different Macintosh forums, over several days of intense effort I managed to create titles in iMovie, import audio, add music to the titles, and get it all to play the way I want.
So far so good. NOW, how do I get it back OUT of iMovie, THROUGH the converter, and IN to my Sony video Hi8 camera, which shoots 8mm tape, not digital (which is one reason why I had to buy the converter)? So far, I've managed to connect the yellow video plug to the yellow video jack on the back of the converter, the black audio plug to the white audio jack on the back of the converter, and that's it. If the manual says a word about sending things back OUT of the converter, I can't find it and probably wouldn't understand it if I could. I don't know what mode to be in, how to know when it's gone from the Mac to the converter, or how to get it from the converter to the camera. ANY HELP is appreciated, thanks!

Here's a whole conversation with a guy on Usenet telling me where-all I went wrong (I haven't repeated his every remark, which were extensive) and what I should have done, with my replies on what I've done or am thinking of doing and why:
Third, you have gotten some pretty hard to follow and conflicting advice here.
To say the least! And you seem to be giving conflicting advice, too, saying I should put my entire four-hour project into iMovie using iDVD to save it, then saying iDVD won't burn more than 90 minutes on one disk anyway! (At least, that's what I think you said.) Also, I've been told that iMovie craps out right about 90 minutes anyway and nobody could possibly do a four-hour project on it, at least, as one project. And I'm a bit hazy as to how to split something into three or four parts and then reassemble it as one, if that's even possible. Luckily, I don't even want to "go there."
The point is moot as putting the whole project into iMovie, either as a whole or in pieces, is the LAST thing I want to do anyway. All I want to do is get the titles and edited pieces--perhaps a 15-minute total--out of iMovie and onto my plain old-fashioned VHS tape (a four-hour total including the fancy techy bits) without having to buy (or steal) a new camera (or a new computer) to do it!
For example, there was no real reason for you to get Toast (I don't think...). iMovie + iDVD is generally sufficient. And the whole thread about media was pretty pointless (particularly the "penny wise, pound foolish" concerns about whether the $10 or whatever you spent on some DVD blanks had been wasted...)
Well, I haven't got Toast...yet. It's just people seemed to feel that iDVD (which I admittedly haven't tried) was more prone to screwups and Toast was a better way to set things up and really see what you were getting before accidentally burning a bunch of "coasters" which I wanted to avoid. As for the blanks, I hate to see anything go to waste, either money or products, and since eventually I'd like to transfer a lot of VHS home movies over to DVD using the Canopus, I wanted advice on where best to obtain high-quality blank DVDs at good cost, which advice I got. Sorry to have to expound over every detail of my thinking process but when you start skipping all over the place people tend not to get what you're saying or why.
If one has 1) a recent Mac with a DVD-R drive and sufficient free disk, and 2) iLife (comes bundled with all new Macs)
How recent? Mine is three to four years old, and I can tell you for sure it has only a Combo drive, not a Superdrive--that's why I bought the DVD burner. Are you saying I should have bought a new Mac rather than add all this equipment to my old one?
Toast is useful for burning DVDs when iDVD won't - such as with unsupported DVD burners, or if you want more than 90 minutes on a DVD. For the price of Toast, you could have probably bought an internal DVD-R drive that is supported directly by iDVD.
Okay, you've COMPLETELY got me there. Where can I get some quotes on how much Toast would cost vs. how much it would cost to have my Combo Drive upgraded to a Superdrive? (At least I think that's what you're suggesting.) Once I learn the best source and cost of the equipment to do this, I'll look into where I can have it done (obviously taking the thing apart with a screwdriver and inserting the new drive myself is not an option.)
After that I'll worry what on earth to do with the DVD burner I bought! It was $129.00 and arrived December 13, and return requests are supposed to be made within 15 days! So obviously I can't return it for money back--at least from the place where I bought it--even though it's brand-new, untouched, never been used as I'm nowhere near the point of burning anything yet! Then returning it in favor of just using the Superdrive on the Mac (assuming I can get one for my Mac) may still be a mistake as how do I know the one I already bought won't do a much better and/or more usable job? I just want something that will work! In this case, one that will make DVDs which will play on my player without having to buy another DVD player (also over $100.00, brand new a year ago.)
Consumer DVD recorders are designed to record "live" direct to DVD from a video source.
DVD-R drives, in conjunction with a computer, aren't.
As far as I can tell, you just answered the question I raised, and in my favor. Or is that wishful thinking on my part and we're really talking about two different things here? I do know it's said a lot of DVDs will play on a computer which won't on a DVD player connected to a TV--which, given the nature of the projects I'd like to do, does me no good--that's why I thought the DVD burner a good idea!
You are assuming that your DVD recorder can record a four hour DVD.
My friend hasn't answered, but I'm pretty sure he said his would, and that people who wanted DVDs were giving him only one blank disk, not two. What mine will do, I have no idea as I've barely looked at it yet. For my own part, whether I end up making my DVDs on my own burner or having my friend make them, I think I will use two disks to get higher quality. I was asking for the benefit of the people who gave him only one blank disk and thought they were going to get the whole thing on that. As for number of copies--last he told me he had 40 blanks given to him by people wanting copies--I think most were VHS tapes but some were DVDs.
Based on what I'd read, I'll guess that:
You don't have all the raw video imported
You don't have enough disk space to do so
The DVD burner you have is not directly supported by iDVD
It isn't clear at all whether the DVD burner that you bought is a DVD-R drive (in an external case?) or a consumer DVD recorder.
Well, you certainly got all those guesses right! That's why I'm putting "the lesser, the better" into iMovie--only the complicated stuff which NEEDS to be done there--the rest of it gets done the straightforward way that I understand!
As for the DVD burner I bought, it is a LaCie DVD +/- RW 16x4x16x Double Layer FireWire device.
The ADVC110 most definitely will export to whatever analog video tape you want. Straight from iMovie. "Export to camera..."
That's what the video & audio out ports on that device are for...
There are one-way devices out there, but the ADVC110 is not one of them. I've never used one myself, but was able to determine this from the very first web page I looked at...
You have mistaken advice that you shouldn't export to cruddy VHS for a reproduction master with advice that you can't do so.
No, I didn't really, although people seemed to think that was what I was saying. Below is my response to a question on another forum explaining what I did, what I want to do, and my rationale for doing things the way I have or plan to based on advice I've gotten. If there is a better way (short of buying all-new everything!) I am open to that advice as well.
(Here follows the entire reply I posted above in response to ThomasG.)
Everybody takes on at least one project where they are completely over their head.
Gee, thanks, now I feel in such good company. So...I'm not an idiot? I have got the project PARTWAY done! Anyway, back in the "old days" of special effects, when the first "Star Wars" movies were done, a whole team of people might take five months to do something that would take five minutes onscreen, while the parts requiring only sets and actors, some of which took more screen time, were accomplished much more quickly, so I am not all that far off!
Asking advice on Usenet for such a project can quite easily cause a whole bunch of wasted time and money, following advice from folks who don't really understand exactly what you are trying to do and what constraints you are under. If you don't have a reasonable understanding of the basics, you will have a very hard time sorting the wheat from the chaff.
It certainly was hard knowing what advice to take. I started out just calling a Sales Rep at the same company from which I purchased my computer and monitor, telling him what I wanted to do, then buying what he said to buy, which I needed EXTENSIVE instructions from various online groups to make work. (The manual on the Canopus was, in particular, next to useless. You could read it all in 15 minutes but you still wouldn't know anything. I hope the instructions on the DVD burner are done by people who understand English.)
Thanks for your lengthy consideration of my problems.
