  • LCD display colors all washed out

    Hi,
I bought my MacBook pro about a week ago and I've noticed that the display colors are all washed out. I have to tilt the display down in order to see the some colors.
    Has anyone else experienced this?

I am not sure that 10.6.2 solved this issue.
I just transferred all the users from my PowerBook G4 to a new iMac with 10.6.2. On one of the users on the PBG4, the icons (and other images [like photos in iPhoto]) were "washed out" or "over saturated" [I am not sure how best to describe it...] The colours for all the other users on the PBG4 are fine. I tried recalibrating on the PBG4, but this made no difference. I thought this could be explained by the fact the PBG4 was getting a bit old, but the situation is the same on the new iMac as well; the same user account has these washed out/over saturated colours. Re-calibration on the iMac made no difference either.
When this account (with odd colours) first starts up, the desktop image loads and for a few (milli-) seconds the colours are OK. Then suddenly they change, as if some kind a file had been read which changes the colour balance. Does anyone know what that file could be or how to identify it? I am thinking that if it could be delete, a new default would be created and all would be well.

  • Export Problem with Color Image Washing Out

I did an export of an image from DNG to JPG in LR4. Funny thing is, the JPG suddenly appears with a washed out look. It looks the same in Develop and Print modules also.
It gets even funnier, because when I use Finder to check the photo, the preview of the image is fine. I also opened the image from Finder in Photoshop CS5 and it is fine there. I also opened the image in PSCS5 from LR4 with "Edit In" and again the image in Photoshop is fine. So this appears to be a view issue in LR4. I did not print out the washed out photo but I suspect it would print out as it appears in LR4.
I've done some other image exports from DNG to JPG with other images and they do not have this problem but those were black&white converted images. However, I did check doing an export of another color image with the same result as the problem image. Here are screen captures of the DNG and the exported JPG (I was going to upload the exported JPG, but like I said it appears fine in Finder):

My monitor calibration is just fine. I was saying that because similar
problems are almost always due to bad monitor profiles. If you calibrate
regularly using hardware calibration then you're probably fine. Many people
use canned profiles from monitor manufacturers however and lightroom is
highly sensitive to those and shows messed up color depending on the
source. In this case however, since the restart fixed it it was likely a
bad preview image. I have seen before that LR sometimes is lazy in
refreshing those and can show you strange results that only get cleared up
    by forcing a preview refresh.
Last your top screenshot DOES show that you are pushing the red in that
dress out of the monitor gamut. You can check this in the soft proof in LR
4 by turning on the monitor gamut warning. If you blow the color out of the
monitor gamut the preview is no going to be accurate no matter how good
your calibration. Just a cautionary warning.

  • Why does my Pages Brochure print all washed out?

When I print my Pages Photo Brochure the colors are all washed out. I edit my photos in Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 and they print out with good color and resolution from PE10. Is there a color manager for Pages? I'm exporting my document as a PDF but even if I just drop a photo on a Pages blank page and print, its still washed out. The screen view looks great but print quality is bad. Adobe says its not their problem. I'm most appreciative of any help from the forum. I'm a new MAC user. Thanks in advance :-)Judy

Not sure I understand the question, "what is your screen"?
I have always "saved for the web" since I'm a Real Estate Photographer and MLS Web Viewing is important. I save at 300dpi. It worked ok for print when I was using MS Publisher to create my documents. My print colors were vibrant with good resolution.
When I print aphoto dierectly from PE10, it looks great, but the same Photo printed from Pages is faded and washed out.
In PE10 I have my color profile set to Adobe RGB. In one forum I read that Elements should be set to determine color instead of the Printer. It seems as though the PE10 color profile isn't available to Pages.
Perhaps PE10 doesn't save the color profile in the photograph?
How should the Photoshop Elements Profile be set up to work best with Pages so that my photos will be optimized when I print from Pages?
I continue to use PE10 because I shoot with a wide angle lens and need to be able to correct vertical distortions.
    thanks for your help! Judy

  • How come Colors are Washed Out, FCE QT Conversion H.264

I have searched this forum on this problem, but nothing I found directly addresses this.
I have transcoded 1080p h.264 video to AIC, editing in FCE4 works beautifully. If I export to QT movie only converting to h264 original size, a 3 minute video becomes 3 GB but the playback in QT matches the colors I see in FCE. If I use FCE to QT conversion to a smaller size, 640x360 h.264, the colors get washed out. I tried MPEG Streamclip to convert the 3GB version, and the colors are beautiful, but even at 100% quality, the video looks slightly pixelated.
Still on MAC OS X 10.5.8 with QT7. Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Nelson

it's an old bug, and one I hoped had been fixed with the release of QT7.
there is supposedly a field in the mov file which indicates the Gamma of the mov. from memory, QT is either not writing the value, or it's ignoring the value when the mov is played back. the bug is also evident in Safari. it only affects movies exported as H.264 (which is laughable since Apple has been heavily promoting H.264 for quite some time)
I have an urgent project for friends overseas. this is not a welcome predicament.
search the net for "quicktime gamma fix" and you'll find a raft of web pages regarding the problem. for example, Luxology Quicktime Gamma Fix.

  • I had a cracked screen and I got a replacement Iphone 4 yesterday.  The colors appear washed out and muddy looking.

I took my Iphone 4 to an Apple retail store.  It had a cracked screen and I got and out warrantee replacement for $149.  Everthing works but the display is subpar.  The wallpaper and images appear muddy yellow and the colors appear washed out.
Can I exchange it for another one?

  • Colors faded, washed out in PDF display

Hi all, odd problem... found a few like it in the forums, no solutions though.
When I export a PDF from InDesign CS3 to Acrobat 8, the PDF opens with a dull "wash" over the entire pages.
When I scroll or move thru the document in Acrobat, I briefly see the pages properly (vivid color, rich blacks) for a split-second, then this grayish "wash" appears over everything. This even happens in the Print preview dialog.
It seems to print OK, but executives will be opening & viewing this file and not always printing. I'm getting comments like "can you fix the color?"
My color settings are synchronized thru Bridge.
    Any insight is much appreciated!!

I am having a similar but different problem.
My documents print from InDesign CS3 just fine. The printed output matches my on screen colors just fine. When I create a PDF from InDesign, the onscreen PDF looks just fine... BUT (here's the problem) the printed output from the PDF is washed out.
The reason this is important is because I have to send a PDF file to the printer to have it printed. The printer only accepts PDF files.
The color space is CMYK in all cases (US Web Coated SWOP v2)
I have tried a TON of different options, from "Preserve Color Space" to not preseving, convert, etc. etc.
Does anyone have any ideas why printing from InDesign looks good but printing from the PDF file is always washed out?
    Thanks,

  • Has anyone else noticed that colors are washed out on screen on the white iPhone?

Comparing the white and black iPhone 4 side by side, I noticed that colors on the screen are washed out on the white iPhone. This is clearly noticable when clicking on messages and looking at the top where the word messages appears in blue/gray color. When looking at this on the white iPhone, its more white than blue/gray.

It could be just the contrast in color with your eyes looking at the white iphone vs the black one. Your eyes can sometimes play tricks on you. But in all seriousness, iPhone screens vary in color temperatures. I have seen two black iphones 4s that looked like they had different displays in them.

  • Export Quicktime movie in FCP comes out as a Final Cut Pro Movie File

Does anyone know why when I Export Quicktime movie in FCP it comes out as a Final Cut Pro Movie File? I can still play it in Quicktime and it's possible to set the Quicktime Player as the default software, but it still says in my finder window that it is a Final Cut Pro Movie File.
Does anyone know if there are any settings for the clip to come out as a Quicktime Movie instead? Thank you!

+"The studio apps "brand" their exports. Actually kind of useful...+
In the words of the venerable Forest Gump, "Useful is as useful does" ... or something like that.
I actually use similar "icon" techniques in other areas of my workflow. But most of the time I just modify the file title for quick ID - I also use dashes & underscores to get things to stand out and stay at the top of lists etc.
But QT is my Go-To App for quick media reference and I have it set up to play almost all types off media when double clicked. I started doing it years ago when iTunes opened up every time I wanted to check a few seconds of an mp3 file.
I guess the best solution would have been for Apple to leave the "export FinalCut movie" option intact and simply add in an "export Quicktime movie" option as well. Or maybe add another drop down option for the tagging (branding).
At least we would have been able to make the workflow choices in-the-box rather than doing it with the OS.
    Andy Neil,
I think using the OS is the better option rather than re-compressing your movie just so you can double click into QT.

  • Quicktime h.264 still all washed out...

I know there are countless threads about gamma / unsaturated color issues when exporting to using h.264... in fact I think I have read all of them, which are all at least a year + old... this is still a problem: (Obviously top is good)
So does anyone have a REAL answer for this bug. Someone did post a supposed workaround, dealing with color profile... but this does not work.
BTW... it plays fine embedded in Firefox.
    24" iMac Mac OS X (10.4.9) Core 2 duo - 2.33 - 2gb ram

I too have been plagued by this H264 problem for the past 2 years it seems.
I have a suspicion that if we polled the users experiencing this effect that
it would result they all use custom or modified Display Profiles in the Display System Preferences.
My temporary (and somewhat silly workaround) has been to change my display profile to the
standard "Cinema HD Display" instead of my user-created "Cinema HD Display Calibrated" profile.
It does alter the gamma of my display to a unpleasing value, but after changing it, the H264 export
works beautifully. No gamma shift at all.
I have read all the suggestions on trying the quicktime "filter then colorsync" export and always got unsatisfactory results. My silly workaround always produces the best results. I just have to change the dang setting back after I export so my eye dont burn out of my skull.

  • I have a new MBP with high-res display, and the color seems washed out compared to my old MBP.  Is this normal?

Putting the two laptops side by side, blacks on my old machine look dark grey on the new one.  I also have 24" and 27" cinema displays, and the new high res laptop display looks washed out in comparison.
I have tried to recalibrate the screen color settings, but this doesn't seem to make much difference.
Any help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    David.

Yes, the gamma settings are the same on all 4 displays (my two laptops and the two displays).
After a little experimentation, I think that it's down to the brightness of the high resolution display.  It would seem that it is slightly dimmer than the low-res one on my other 15" MBP, so I think that Apple have set the default colour profile to be slightly washed out to compensate.  If I use the same profile on the high-res MBP screen as on the low-res MBP screen, then the colour is much better.
The cinema displays are a lot better than the laptop displays, but I was expecting the new high-res display to be as good as the old low-res one - especially as I paid a lot more money for it!
Ah well!  I think I might take it into the store and just check that it is the norm for this...
    Thanks for your help.

  • Color Problems in Lion (Colors Missing / Washed Out / Invisible)

    Hello,
I recently purchased a new macbook air, and I'm loving it. I don't know if the problem im experiencing is an issue with Lion, or with the display hardware of this macbook- but colors on this display (either due to the hardware or the Lion OS) are getting really washed out. Sites that would previously look fine, now appear to be missing a lot of the colors that I know they are supposed to have.
What's even stranger, is that if I have an OSX window open above the browser/website I can actually see the correct colors by moving the top window across the screen and looking at the colors in the window just below it within the dropshadow area. Somehow the dropshadow of the upper window causes some kinda  color transform magic that shows the colors as they should be, but the correct colors only appear in the "dropshadow" area. This tells me that the correct colors are there, but somehow the display or software is not displaying them correctly.
I wish I could post images to show the problem, but I know if I post any, they will just look correct on whatever display user's are viewing them through, as this problem seems to be specific to this LED display / Lion.
Look at http://snipt.org. The "New Snipt" box should appear as a light gray box with a darker 4 pixel border and a blue header. The entire box should have a dropshadow. On every other display I have used this is how it appears, and it is correct. When I view it on my MBA/Lion, all the grays and dropshadows are gone, Its basically a white page, with a blue header and some dropdown boxes. If I open an OSX window above it, the dropshadow of that window does something to the colors which reveals the grays and dropshadows on snipt.org but they are only shown in the are covered by the dropshadow of the topmost OSX window.
Has anyone else experienced this? As a web developer this makes things extremely difficult, the colors I see on this machine are inconsistent with ANY other display. Is there a way to fix this?
I can try and take a video with my iPhone to convey the issue if this description doesn't make sense. Please help me out!
    Thanks
    Dan

Aha! After posting this in "related posts" section on the right, I found this answer:
"Open the Universal Access pane of System Preferences, click on the Seeing tab, turn off White on Black, and drag the Contrast slider all the way to the left."
That fixed it! The colors appear correctly again! Websites actually look good instead of being entirely white!
Apple should really change this to be the default setting, rather than shipping with colors being oversaturated.
    Hope this helps someone too!

  • Just upgraded to FCP7, colors look washed out, more saturated than in FCP6

We just upgraded the office to FCP7. Users are now complaining that colors look much more over exposed, washed out, different than they were displaying in FCP6.
Also, a bug shows when you play a clip, it looks lighter. Hit pause, and it displays darker.
What's going on? We're all on apple cinema displays calibrated to 2.2 television gamma.

I've FCP7 (Snow Leopard) and 6 (Leopard) running side by side and I don't get this problem.
I'm assuming you did a fresh install of both OSX and FCP7 when you moved from one to the other ? I find this is really the only way to guarantee stability.
Sorry if I'm stating the obvious (you don't give many details) but you might also try trashing the prefs and doing any available updates.

  • How come start up screen colors look washed out.

    Hi,
I tried to change the background for the login startup screen on my iMac.  I noticed that the colors from my image appears faded.
When I look at the image in other origram(ie. preview) the colors are what they should be.
So what is OS X(Lion) doing to cause the colrs to look this  way?  And is there a way to fix it?
Thanks and I look forward to your reply.
    ...Bruce

I had this problem with my R705 too.  It has to do with one of the bloatware that is already installed from the factory.  The reason that I say this is because after I put in a ssd and did a clean install without any of the bloatware, I don't get the washed out screen effect anymore.  Now which one of the bloatware is responsible for this, i couldn't tell you.

  • Color is washed out and the type is fuzzy

The color on my HP Pavillion 15 Notebook PC appears washed out. In addition, despite trying several settings on the "clear type", my type seems to be fuzzy nd difficult to read. I've already tried adjusting the color on the advanced settings to no avail. As an example, if there is a box surrounding this post area, I cannot see it. I'm really frustrated and ready to return this after fighting with it for over a month.
