Export to pdf - won't print

I have created an InDesign document and have exported it to pdf (leaving the defaults). I am able to open it in Adobe reader, but when I go to print, I get the following errors:
The document could not be printed.
There were no pages selected to print.
In the print dialog box all looks normal expect the mini-preview is greyed out. Help!

Then the problem is in reader, not InDesign. I'd say perhaps there was a security setting preventing printing, but if that were the case the print command would be grayed out and you'd be unable to open the dialog.

  • InDesign doc exported to PDF won't print

    I'm experiencing issues with an exported PDF from InDesign. More specifically, when I export the InDesign doc to a PDF and try to print, I don't have any issues, nor does anyone else in my office, however some of the people that I'm sending the document to are experiencing trouble printing it. They get to 44% flattened and then the printing process slows down, and then once it reaches 50% they get a pop-up window saying that the document can't print and the whole thing stops. They can print the first page by just selecting that page, however the second page cannot be printed this way. I have re-exported the PDF several times and these folks having the issues have cleared their browser cache, re-downloaded the document, saved it to their desktop before opening, and tried renaming the document as well.
    What's going on here, and what can I do or tell them to do to fix this?
    Also, updating their Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat does not solve the problem.

    Hi, I was just wondering if you got the problem resolved. I'm asking because we are experiencing kind of the same issue in our office. Our Marketing Manager is using Adobe InDesign and exports her documents to PDF. These PDFs won't print in any of our printers in the office. It spools and then gets stuck and it actually makes our HP Coloured Laser Printer throw an error (error 79) and we'll have to restart the printer due to this error. We can print other documents and other PDFs in the printer so we know it's not a printer driver issue. In fact, we have isolated the problem to only PDFs exported from InDesign. Even if we create a blank document from InDesign and export it to PDF it still won't print. Really odd. We would appreciate if you could share your solution if you were able to fix the issue. Thanks!!

  • How can I export to PDF for Offset printing including color and grayscale photo's?

    After reading dozens of forum, I still don’t found the answer.
    I made a photobook with full-colur and B/W photos for Offset printing. I want the B/W to be in grayscale to avoid color possible color shades. It seems InDesign doesn’t support grayscale, the images become way to dark. Even with exporting without any colour conversion or destination and/or including original colour profiles, the grayscale pictures are being exported to dark to PDF.
    How can I export to PDF for Offset printing including color and grayscale photo’s?

    Yes, the Photoshop & ID CMYK working spaces are the same
    This can get difficult because the 3 programs handle soft proofing differently.
    The working spaces don't matter, it's the document profile(s) that manage the preview. So here is the same grayscale image placed in ID on top and PS on the bottom. I've set my Photoshop info to show the doc profile in the lower left corner. I can see my InDesign's Document CMYK profile in my Proof Setup (the Working CMYK is different and isn't being used). Both profiles are effectively the same Coated FOGRA39 (Black Ink FOGRA in the case of PS).
    But the previews don't match because I have Overprint turned off, so the InDesign preview is Gamma 2.2 or a "screen" media preview.
    If I turn on Overprint preview I get a match because I'm soft proofing for print:

  • PDF won't print properly - some letters squeezed together

    Using a Mac and Reader 9 and two different laser printers (Canon and Brother). PDF won’t print text properly. Some letters are jammed / squeezed together. Last week I used Mac’s Preview Program / App to bypass the PDF print menu to get it to print the PDF properly but no luck today. How to fix?

    Printing as an image fixed the letter-jamming thing, thanks Michael. A new problem though.
    This is a 16 page booklet printed on 8.5x11. Each page is set at 5.5x8.5. I have made two PDF files:
    1) 16 individual pages 5.5x8.5 in portrait mode and
    2) 8 pages 8.5x11 in landscape mode with one page of the booklet on each half of the page (properly formatted to create a 16 page booklet).
    The problem in using either one of these files are these:
    1) When I use the 16 individual page file and make a booklet under the print menu, it shrinks the combined pages to less than 8.5x11.
    2) When I try to print the 8 page file of an already formatted booklet, the image is the right size but the back of each sheet is printed upside-down.
    How do I fix either one of these problems, preferably both? All suggestions welcome.

  • Adobe PDF won't print non-working time colour in MS Project

    Adobe PDF won't print the colour chosen for non-working times in MS Project.  I have tried changing the colour, changing the style, moving non-working time in front of tasks and have fiddled with the printer properties, all to no avail.  It ignores whatever style I have for non-working time and makes a blank space, although it will take gridline changes . . . . please help!

    Thank you for providing the suggestion and the Cleanup tools, however they did not help.
    I ran each version of the cleanup tool, and for each I had it clean up Reader and Acrobat (i.e. 4 separate cleanup operations).  I then rebooted the machine, and installed Reader 11.0.3.
    Still had the same behavior:  Reader will not print.  I tried printing to a second printer (that is attached via USB)...and it did not work either.  I also tried printing to a Cute PDF Writer print driver...and that did not work either.  In each case, no print data made it to the Windows print queue (as demonstrated by watching the queue while printing.)  No error was raised, but no print data was transmitted.
    I then uninstalled Reader 11.0.3, rebooted, and re-installed Reader 9:  printing works fine now.
    There is definitely something in Reader 10 and Reader 11 that breaks printing in some environments.    (As you alluded to...I have seen a number of postings online about printing problems in Reader.)
    More details about my environment:
    Windows 7 Professional N (Version 6.1, Build 7601: Service Pack 1)
    VMWare virtual machine
    Two virtual CPUs (each: Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.67 GHz, 2673 Mhz, 1 core, 1 Logicial Processor)
    Hardware Abstraction Layer:  6.1.7601.17514
    RAM:  3096 (allocated to virtual machine)
    Bridged networking
    VMware host:
    Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit 6.1.7601, Service Pack 1
    18 Gig RAM
    Intel Core i7 CPU 920 @2.67 GHz
    VMWare Workstation 9.0.2 build-1031769
    (but problem existed on older version of VMWare Workstation 7.x as well)

  • PDFs won't print (Lion and HP laserjet 1300)

    I just upgraded to Lion and pdfs won't print. It doesn't appear to be the printer driver, because the printer works with others apps. Any suggestions? It's an HP Laserjet 1300. Yes, it's old, but still works, well, sometimes. just not with pdfs.

    Hi Andreais,
    I found some useful tips on the HP forum as well. Maybe it is helpful in your case as well: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Mac-Printing-and-Scanning/HPDesignjet-130NR-no-long er-prints-PDF-properly/m-p/768507/highlight/true#M18877

  • PDFs won't print on new HP printer

    I recently added a HP CM1415fnw printer in my office and I cannot print any PDF documents. Word and Excel print fine. Why?

    Happily, Windows 7 is in and everything seems to work fine. I have to
    navigate around my desktop a bit differently, but everything seems to be
    compatible. I especially have to work now with printing Word docs to PDF.
    I'll get there...

  • How do I export a PDF without the print bleed extra "stuff" around the edges?

    I know my question wording sucks, but I didn't know how else to put it.
    I created a document in ID for print with a bleed.  When I export to PDF, the image is not cropped to the finished size of the page, but includes the excess background images that I extended beyond the page bounds for a bleed.  I am now trying to export a PDF that can be sent in email and will not be printed, and so I would like to export a PDF file that does not have any of that extra stuff (I have turned off the printer's marks) around the edges.  But my PDF has the excess stuff and a red outline around the actual page dimensions.  How do I export a PDF that is cropped to the correct page size (8.5" x 11")?
    I have attached the PDF I have created with the excess stuff and the red outline around the page size so you can see what I mean.
    Thanks!
    Bryan

    Hello,
    i have a problem exporting as a PDF also, i have done this before successfully and i have unchecked all the boxes to turn off bleeds etc, etc... however the bleed area is still coming through. I have tried saving the file under another name, closing down and reopening - nothing seems to work. I'd be very grateful if someone could offer some advice on this.
    Thanks!

  • [JS CS3 Win] Export to PDF then auto-print PDF from Acrobat

    Hello!
    I am working on the script that is exporting pages to PDF, and would like to automatically send exported PDF to print from Acrobat.
    I get the scripting part for exporting to PDF, and it's working very well, but I have trouble on the part of the script that tells Acrobat to open the PDF and send it to printer. Script is run from InDesign, so I thought this is right forum to ask.
    The following part of the script is working OK on one computer, but on other two computers with similar configuration (CS3. Windows, Acrobat 8) it doesn't work at all and I can't figure out where is the problem:
    var printFile = "/c/temp/test.pdf";
    var remoteScript = "printFile = decodeURI('"+printFile+"');\n";
    remoteScript += "var doc = app.openDoc({cPath: printFile});\n";
    remoteScript += "var pp = doc.getPrintParams();\n";
    remoteScript += "pp.pageHandling = pp.constants.handling.shrink;\n";
    remoteScript += "pp.NumCopies = 2;\n";
    remoteScript += "pp.interactive = pp.constants.interactionLevel.silent;\n";
    remoteScript += "pp.printerName = '\\\\hrhqzgw23prn01\\\hr300019ps';\n";
    remoteScript += "doc.print(pp);\n";
    remoteScript += "doc.closeDoc(true);";
    acrobat.executeScript(remoteScript);
    I would appreciate any help. thank you.

    Hi Mark,
    Here is a sample script. It exports the active InDesign document to pdf file, using its base name, to the root of C drive. Then opens the exported file in Acrobat, prints it to the default printer and silently closes it.
    Tested on InDesign 5.0.3, Acrobat 8.0.0, Windows XP SP3.
    #target indesign
    var myIndesignDoc = app.activeDocument;
    var myBaseName = GetFileNameOnly(myIndesignDoc.name);
    var myFile = new File( "/C/" + myBaseName + ".pdf" );
    myIndesignDoc.exportFile( ExportFormat.pdfType, myFile, false );
    var myScript = 'var myAcrobatDoc = app.openDoc( "/C/' + myBaseName + '.pdf" );\n';
    myScript += 'myAcrobatDoc.print( {bUI: false, bSilent: true} );\n';
    myScript += 'myAcrobatDoc.closeDoc( true );';
    var bt = new BridgeTalk;
    bt.target = "acrobat";
    bt.body = myScript;
    bt.send();
    function GetFileNameOnly(myFileName) {
        var myString = "";
        var myResult = myFileName.lastIndexOf(".");
        if (myResult == -1) {
            myString = myFileName;
        else {
            myString = myFileName.substr(0, myResult);
        return myString;
    Short explanation of the acrobat script:
    1. Open the pdf file, just exported from InDesign
    var myAcrobatDoc = app.openDoc( "/C/' + myBaseName + '.pdf" );
    2. To print the document silently I use the doc object’s print method and set the following parameters:
    bUI -- Determines whether to present a user interface to the user
    bSilent -- Suppresses the Cancel dialog box while the document is printed
    myAcrobatDoc.print( {bUI: false, bSilent: true} );
    3. Close the document without notifying the user:
    myAcrobatDoc.closeDoc( true );

  • Pages: How to export a PDF suitable for print-on-demand

    I need to be able to export a PDF from Pages that will meet the specs for the IngramSpark or Lightning Source Print on Demand programs. They require a PDF that has all fonts fully embedded in one of these two PDF versions:
    PDF/X-1a:2001 or PDF/X-3:2002
    Does Pages export - either through the export function or Print function - to either of those specs and does it embed full font sets?
    Thanks.

    The reason neither Pages, or Swift Publisher nor most of the low cost DTP apps do this on OSX is because they use Apple's muddled print output. It almost but not quite outputs to PDF/X-3:2002, and even there there are caveats.
    Indesign and QuarkXpress use their own print engines and Scribus uses GhostScript.
    GhostScript is available for OSX. I have not tried this so you are in wide open territory, but experiment to see if it fixes Pages' output. My suspicions are that GhostScript may not capture Pages' output before it has already been through Apple's muddled output.
    There are other problems with Apple's approach. No specifiable defined colours in Styles. No spot colours, and no proofing. ColorSync itself is powerful but undocumented and difficult to tailor. You can run the end result through Acrobat Pro's Press Check but it only picks up the errors, you are on your own trying to fix them.
    The only easy to use, low price DTP application that meets your requirements is Serif PagesPlus, which runs only on Wimdows. You can run this in BootCamp or some other virtualiser.
    Adobe lets you effectively hire Indesign CC by the month so may be a cost effective solution in the short term. It is a professional solution but has a professionally difficult interface.

  • Acrobat X PDF Won't Print

    I installed Acrobat X the other day.
    Today, I tried printing a PDF document, but it won't print.
    When I click OK, I get an error message that reads: document cannot print, then another message that reads no pages were selected.
    If I click on printer, and select print from there, nothing happens.

    pleasure: if you open the file in Acrobat Pro and save as, that sometimes does the trick as well. (if it does then its a better solution)

  • PDF won't print beyond a certain page.

    I have sent a 52 page pdf to a client created in Adobe InDesign. They have tried printing it, and it won't print beyond page 23, on multiple printers. I am able to print all pages at home, so I don't know if the problem is somewhere in the pdf's setup, or the clients printers. Has anyone run into this issue before? Thank you for any suggestions.

    '''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
    ''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * Open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
    ''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
    '''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension.

  • PDF won't print out

    I have windows 7 and adobe xi. I can't print out a pdf. It won't go to the printer. I tried downloading it and then opening but still won't print.

    No error messages; just wont go to the printer?
    Try 'Print as Image' (Advanced button on Print panel).

  • PDFs Won't Print

    I can't print PDFs to my Brother printer. I get the error message /usr/libexed/cups/filter/pstoraster failed. Please help! I am running OSX 10.6.8.

    I can print everything but pdf files. I have had this problem with an older Brother printer (model MFC 7840W) but I didn't deal with it because I had an old OKI color printer that I was using as my primary printer and it had no problems. The OKI died last week and we got a new Brother MFC-9970CDW. Now I can't print pdfs to either printer.
    My default for opening PDFs is Acrobat 9 Pro v 9.4.6. I also use this to modify PDF files and to create forms so changing to Preview or another way of opening the files is not a good option.
    I know other people are having this issue but I have not been able to find a good solution in any of the threads I have read online.
    Thanks for your help!
